1 Cass County 4-H Poultry Project Record Book Level 2 (Grades 6 8) For each year in the project (in this same level), each member will complete 2 activities, for a total number of 6 activities if three years in this level. For example, if an 8 th grader loses his/her record sheet and acquires a new one at the office, they need to complete 6 total activities before turning the record sheet in not just two (if they have been in the project multiple years). 3 General Guidelines: For each year you are enrolled in the Poultry project, complete two (2) of the activities included in this record book. You may NOT repeat activities. All activities are described in your 4-H Poultry manual. In addition, for each year you are enrolled in the Poultry project, complete the financial report included in this record book. ACTIVITY 1 CARE AND MAINTENANCE 1. Name one health problem chickens can have and what would you do for it? 2. Why should you keep your litter fresh and clean? 3. What are the most common internal parasites of poultry? _ When will these parasites be a problem? How can they be treated? How often should you check for these parasites? 3
4 ACTIVITY 2 HISTORY 1. Where were chickens first kept for eggs and meat? 2. As early as when were chickens being exported from India? 3. What country were chickens brought from to Europe? 4. Where is it believed that today s American breeds came from? ACTIVITY 3 HOUSING 1. Why should you keep your chicken coop out of direct sunlight and drafts? 2. Why is it important for your bird to have good housing? 3. What size of a pen do you need for: Largest, large fowl? _ Small bantams? 4
5 ACTIVITY 4 BREEDS 1. What books give the class and describes the characteristics of each breed? 2. Today, breeds of large fowl poultry are grouped according to what? What are these groups? 3. Ducks in the American Poultry Association system are grouped into what classes? Geese ACTIVITY 5 BREED SELECTION Match the traits to the breeds as a guide to which breed is best for you. 1. Cochins A. Tend to become brassy colored if kept in direct sunlight. 2. Feather-legged Breeds B. Need plenty of exercise to develop the desired hard feathering & muscle tone. 3. All White Varieties C. Should not be allowed to run in wet or tall grass or in extremely muddy 4. Games and Cornish areas. D. Should not be allowed to get their heads 5. Crested Breeds wet in cool or cold weather. E. Stand extreme confinement very well. 5
