3 4-H Dog Poster This project is to promote educational, creative, dog related 4-H exhibits. An educational exhibit should be designed to teach those who view it, about the selected topic. Choose topics of interest to the 4-H er, then apply your imagination. 4-H ers are encouraged to seek assistance from their 4-H Dog program leaders, the county Extension Office staff and resources, the Internet, the Public Library and from other dog resources. Categories: Level 1 grades 3, 4, & 5 (as of January 1 of current year) Level 2 grades 6, 7, & 8 (as of January 1 of current year) Level 3 grades 9. 10, 11, & 12 (as of January 1 of current year) Exhibit Requirements: 1. Exhibit a poster (22 X 28 ) with stiff backing and a clear protective covering. Posters must be displayed horizontally and include exhibit label in lower right hand corner. 2. Poster topics can be anything relating to dogs. Suggestions of exhibit topics are listed below. Relate the title to your poster topic instead of using Dog Poster as the title. 3. Turn in a completed record sheet with your project. Exhibit Topics: The following suggestions are ideas for development of educational dog exhibits. 4-H ers need not be limited to just these topics. Level 1: Dog care, dog breeds, me and my dog, helping the handicapped. Level 2: Purposes of dogs, responsible dog ownership, uses of dogs, disease/parasite prevention, careers with dogs. Level 3: Learning life skills with the dog project, your dog and the law, food, a dog s sense of smell, dog over-population problems, animal health, animal welfare.

4 Additional Ideas and Topics: Use your dog s breed or the most prevalent breed showing in your mixed-breed dog. Place a picture of you and your dog on the poster. You may use a brief history of the breed, the characteristics, the accepted standard, etc., which most pertains to your pet. First aid kit for a dog. What is involved, why and how each item is used. The diet and nutrition of raising a healthy dog from puppyhood to adult. Dogs belong to groups. What are the groups, breed members of the groups, and the different uses of the groups? General history of the dog family, canis lupis. How it began to the present day animal. A disease of dogs: its discovery, effects, treatments, etc. A vocation involving dogs. Type of work and preparation for the vocation. Some phase of dog training: novice, open, utility, tracking, guard, narcotic, blind people s guide dogs, herding. Whatever you choose, give a little history, theory, value, pertinence today. A parasite of dogs: its discovery, treatment, effects, etc. Draw a diagram of a dog and label parts of the body and explain the function of each. Kennel clubs, obedience clubs, breed clubs, local, nutrition, etc. Explain difference and functions of different types. Explain breed standards, their purpose and how set up. Junior handling What it is and what purpose it serves. Write an essay of between 200 to 300 words on your chosen topic. Exhibit your essay with the poster using the poster to decorate and explain your topic.
