11 Poultry To Do List BEFORE Fair 1. Poultry Barn Set-Up- It is the responsibility of every 4-Her to help move pens, fencing, boards and saw horses from the bunkers and set them up in the barn. Decorations and fans also need to be hung. We appreciate any parent volunteers willing to help! Set up is Saturday at 8am. 2. Clean birds - Make sure your birds are washed and are free of lice/mites and scaly leg mites. Also make sure they are not showing any signs of illness. 3. NPIP papers- If your birds came from a hatchery or an NPIP certified farm, find your paper or receipt and bring them with you to Poultry Registration. 4. Leg Bands- Make sure each of your birds has a leg band that corresponds to the Animal ID Form that you filled out by May Testing - If your birds do not have NPIP papers, you will need to have them blood tested the week before Fair or at Poultry Registration. 6. Supplies - Your birds will need containers for food and water (for each of your pens) and plenty of food for the week. These containers need to be large enough that your bird s head (including comb) can fit all the way to the bottom. (Waters with a jar on top are not recommended.) Many people also bring a water jug to make refilling easier. You may also want to bring items for use on judging day to help your bird look its best. 7. Animal Affidavits- These forms must be filled out, notarized and turned in by noon at Poultry Registration Sunday or Monday of Fair week. 8. Open Class- If you would like to enter your birds in Open Class you will need these items: A. $1 per open class entry - Every 4Her showing poultry may show 1 open class entry FREE. However, if you want to show more than that you will need $1 per each additional open class entry. It s a nominal fee, but every place you win in open class earns money! B. Open Class Fair Book - These can be picked up at the fair office as well. Find the Poultry page for the Open Class categories. (Or we will have one available at registration.)

12 Registration Day 1. Have Birds Checked - Bring your clean birds in cages and leave outside of the barn until a superintendent has checked them for lice/mites. 2. Register - After your birds are checked by a superintendent, bring your NPIP or testing papers and animal affidavit to the check-in table and register. Make sure your chickens also have the proper leg bands that match the papers and your online registration. 2a. Fill out your Open Class Poultry Tag- If you are entering more than one bird in Open Class, be sure to bring money ($1 for each additional entry). Use the Open Show Categories in the Vanderburgh Fair Open Class book to help decide what class your bird should be entered. You can also look online or in poultry catalogues to see where your bird belongs. (Pic of sample Open Class tag is shown below.) POULTRY Class- American Breed - Barred Plymouth Rock Type - Pullet Name - Joe Smith Address - Evansville 3. Cooping in- Once your birds have been registered, the entry tags will have a number on them. Find the corresponding pen and coop-in your birds. Make sure they have large enough containers for food and water. Tape your entry tag(s) to your pen.

13 Poultry Requirements DURING the Fair 1. Food and Water - You are responsible for feeding and watering your birds every day of the fair. If you are unable to be at the fair, you must make arrangements for someone else to feed your birds for you. It is not the responsibility of the superintendent to do this. 2. Clean Pen - You are responsible for cleaning your birds pen(s) every day of the fair. Again, if you are unable to do this yourself, you must find someone you trust to do it for you. Failure of keeping your pens clean or fed/watered will result in a warning by the superintendent. If the animal(s) are found a second time with a lack of proper care, you may be asked to remove your animal(s). If the animal is removed from the fair, it will not be able to participate in the auction and will forfeit any ribbons and premiums. 3. Clean Aisles - It is the responsibility of every 4-Her who shows poultry to help keep the aisles clean. We have a lot of visitors coming through the barn and it looks much nicer, and helps prevent the spread of disease, if the aisles are kept free from wood chips that get scratched out by the chickens. Your help on this is greatly appreciated. 4. Judging Day - It s strongly suggested that you are present during judging. Be prompt and courteous to the judge and your fellow 4-Hers.

14 Check-Out and Clean Up 1. Pick Up Birds - Make sure you pick up your birds at the designated Check Out Time listed in the 4-H manual. 2. Clean Pens - Clean out your pens completely, disposing all wood chips. 3. Check - After your pens are clean, have a superintendent check them. 4. Ribbons/Trophies/Money - Once your pen has been cleaned and checked, you may pick up your ribbons, trophies and/or money. 5. Tear Down - It is the responsibility of every 4-Her to help tear down pens, saw horses, fencing, decorations and fans. Help is needed to load these items and take them to the bunkers at the designated time listed in the 4-H handbook. Parent volunteers are also needed and greatly appreciated. Many hands make light work!
