The Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians will be hosting their Twenty-seventh Annual Conference September 7-11, 2007 at the Honolulu Zoo, Honolulu, HI. If you would like more information please visit or contact Lynne Nakamitsu at lnakamitsu@honolulu.gov A Box Turtle Conservation Workshop will be held November 9-10, 2007 at Patuxent Research Refuge s National Wildlife Visitor Center in Laurel, Maryland. This is the third in a series of workshops aimed at bringing together individuals actively engaged in box turtle research and conservation to assess the status of these species, the challenges they face, and to devise strategies to help secure their futures. The workshop will be sponsored by Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, The Humane S ociety o f the U nited S tates, and the N orth C arolina Zoological Park. This workshop will focus exclusively on research on box turtle ecology, life history, and, most importantly, population status. It is widely believed that box turtle populations are declining throughout their range, yet relatively few efforts have been made to assess current population status in the interest o f developing long-term conservation strategies. Principal goals of this workshop will be to provide current information, where it exists, on population size assessment throughout the species range, and to develop strategies to initiate population studies, where needed, in as many range states as possible. The organizers hope that the results of this workshop will be available by a 2009 workshop to assist with the development o f long-term conservation efforts. The local racer is the aptly n a m e d B la c k m a s k R a c e r, Coluber constrictor latrunculus. We always try to appreciate the local herpetofauna at any ARAV conference. One of the most common snakes in Louisiana is the venomous cottonmouth. Fortunately for me this is a harmless Yellowbelly Water Snake, Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster. We found this three-legged Cooter, Pseudemys sp., crossing a busy road and helped it to a pond on the other side. She made a splash as she made good her escape. April Gintz, Scott Stahl, Ericka Hughes, and Steve Hernandez-D ivers demonstrate the proper technique for sucking the contents of crawfish heads after eating the tails during the ARAV Crawfish Boil ( Sounds Like Something You Should Lance ) at the Audubon Zoo. Eric Marquette of the Louisiana Gulf Coast Herp Society took us to his secret spot to find the prettiest snake in the state, the Louisiana Milk Snake, Lampropeltis triangulum amaura. 4 Kevin Wright did a fantastic job of filling the absent Mark Mitchell s shoes as the Auctioneer. He vetoed the use of any photos because none were embarrassing enough, but here the crowd responds to Kevin s hys terical banter. It looks like Tom Boyer has heard this joke before. Scott Stahl is one talented guy. While assisting the display of auction items, here he simulta neously twirls a feather boa over his head and digitally palpates the cloaca o f a New Orleans musical gator. D ana Varble bid on an item and I missed the shot. I asked her to ra ise her hand again for the photo and as a result she ended up bidding against herself and raising the price of her item. It is fitting that the two ARAV Lifetime Achievement Award recipients account ed for the two highest priced items in the ARAV fund raising auction. Fred Frye s stylish white shoes with gold buckles, mounted on a commemorative plaque, are auctioned off every year to raise money for research; the successful bid der returns them to the auction the following year. Those shoes have raised thousands o f dollars over the last few years and performed well again this year. This year Elliott Jacobson donated an advance copy o f his new epic text, Infectious Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles. Scott Stahl was the winning bidder and paid extra for an extra ser vice, a kiss from Elliott. 66 Journal of Herpetological Medicine and Surgery Steve H ernandez-d ivers was the other auction assistant. Few could resist his powers of persuasion; here he coaxes Tom Boyer to bid on a bot tle of wine. L eigh C layton falls for the same trick as John Rober looks on. Elliott made good on the kiss, but practiced good quarantine methods by first placing a sterile plastic gro cery bag over Scott s head. What most attendees failed to notice is that Elliott took the opportunity to cop a feel. Volume 17, No. 2,2007

5 One o f the most enjoyable aspects o f the ARAV Conference is that it attracts a large number of veterinarians from outside the United States, allowing for international networking.
