WHY GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY? WHY NOW? o Focus of the School Working Group Action Plan for 2008 o o o an advocacy project uniting all members of global Public- Private Partnership for Handwashing short and long term International Year of Sanitation Millennium Development Goals
VISION sf4 to support and foster a global/local culture of hand washing with soap
Slide 3 sf4 I find this picture scary - it doesn;t say "HWS" to me sarah fry, 5/28/2008
LONG TERM OBJECTIVES 1. Raise awareness of HWWS and in particular: a) benefits of HWWS b) state of HWWS at each country level 2. Drive and create advocacy with key stakeholders and policymakers 3. Generate commitment from stakeholders to promote an enabling environment for handwashing behaviour change
SHORT TERM OBJECTIVES to create a platform for the GHD coalition to collaboratively lead an annual GHD 2. to raise awareness of HWWS at both a global and local level 3. to inspire commitment for HWWS amongst countries
Slide 5 sf5 I moved text down so you can see the girl's face sarah fry, 5/28/2008
5. promoting handwashing with soap requires social marketing approaches that centre on the potential handwasher and his/her specific motivations OUR FUNDAMENTAL FIVE 1. washing hands with water alone is not enough 2. handwashing with soap can prevent diseases that kill millions of children every year 3. critical moments for handwashing are after using the toilet and before handling food 4. handwashing with soap is the single most costeffective health intervention
Slide 6 sf6 I added numbers sarah fry, 5/28/2008
