2 The Great Dane Club of Central North Carolina, Inc. was formed in March We are AKC accredited and GDCA affiliated. We are certified to hold our very own specialty show. This club was founded to provide a place where all Dane owners can come together to share their knowledge and experiences. 3 Aaliyah s Best Jr. Handler Awards On The Road to Westminster Junior Handlers will be invited to enter if they have been placed Best Junior Handler (with competition for Best Junior) at SEVEN or more AKC Licensed or Member shows held between November 1, 2012 and October 31, 2013 (inclusive), and who were at least 9 years old and under 18 years old at the time of each qualifying win. Great Dane Friends Great Dane Rescue Triple J Great Dane Rescue The Great Dane Rescue Alliance AKC News: As reported in the Nov/Dec 2013 issue of The AKC Family Dog Magazine, the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) is now an official AKC title. In addition, an advanced title, the CGCA (Community Canine), has been introduced by AKC. The AKC Canine Health Foundation is excited to bring you breaking news of 17 new research projects funded for The total research investment is nearly $1.5 million and the topics include top priorities in canine health: kidney disease, chronic pain, hip dysplasia, osteochondral defects, brain tumors, Cushing's disease, high blood pressure, heart disease and eye disease. These grants are in addition to nearly $1.5 million awarded for cancer research earlier this year. We are notifying researchers of the awards now, and the announcement of the projects to all our supporters will follow shortly. Also forthcoming are short videos by research area describing the grants and how they work in the context of our full research portfolio. AKC Canine Health Foundation Takes Significant First Step in Preventing Bloat in Dogs - 10/07/2013 The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) has taken a significant step toward the eventual prevention of the devastating condition commonly known as bloat. CHF is pleased to announce the approval of two research grants which will work to establish the causes and pre-dispositions for gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), or bloat. These studies will provide the insight necessary to one day prevent the condition. The two grants will provide $485,000 in bloat research. The first study, headed by principal investigator Dr. Claire Rebecca Sharp, BVMS of Tufts University will evaluate the complex genetic basis of bloat. Importantly, Dr. Sharp s grant will support the beginning of a biobank of samples that will facilitate the study of bloat by other investigators in the future. The second study, headed by principal investigator Dr. Laura L. Nelson, DVM of Michigan State University seeks to determine the abnormalities in the stomach s ability to contract and how this might predispose large-breed dogs to bloat. According to Dr. Shila Nordone, CHF Chief Scientific Officer, Bloat is a major health concern for many dog owners and through our Bloat Initiative we aim to better understand this condition and ultimately equip veterinarians and dog owners with tools that will protect dogs from this devastating illness. Gastric dilatation volvulus, or bloat, can develop in any dog, although it is particularly common in large-breed and deep-chested dogs. Bloat develops when the stomach fills with

7 air and then twists on itself, preventing air and liquid from leaving the stomach. Over time, the stomach gets larger and larger. This cuts off circulation and prevents blood from getting back to the heart from the rest of the abdomen and the rear legs. The stomach wall itself can also be severely damaged from loss of blood flow as can the spleen. Bloat requires immediate stabilization and prompt surgical correction, and may still be fatal in some severely affected dogs. As part of the Bloat Initiative, CHF has released a free webinar which features Dr. Elizabeth Rozanski, a key opinion leader in the study of GDV. In this webinar Dr. Rozanski present the signs and treatment options for bloat along with current options for prevention. Although the world knew him as Giant George, to his owners, Dave and Christine Nasser of Tuscon, Ariz., he was just plain old George, their beloved family pet. Read more at: 8C Health & Welfare: Chronic Pain in Dogs With Bone Cancer Relieved With New Treatment Oct. 23, 2013 A single injection eased severe, chronic pain caused by late-stage bone cancer in dogs, according to a study in the November issue of Anesthesiology. Dogs with bone cancer that received a neurotoxin injection had significantly more pain relief than those that got standard care without the injection.

8 "Dogs are part of the family and we do everything we can to relieve them of pain and discomfort when they are sick," said Dorothy Cimino Brown, D.V.M., School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. "In addition to sharing emotional attachments with our dogs, humans share many of the same ailments our pets suffer when fighting cancer. By studying the positive pain relief this treatment afforded dogs, we are hopeful it may also be effective for humans." The evolution of bone cancer pain in dogs parallels what occurs in humans, with the frequency and intensity of pain increasing over weeks and months. As the cancer advances, both canine and human patients experience life-altering pain, which greatly affects their daily activities and quality of life. The standard treatment for dogs with late-stage bone cancer can include opioids, steroids, and palliative radiation. All of these treatments can have negative side effects. Read the full article at Dog-killing illness in Ohio remains mystery; theory points to new circovirus by Kathy Antoniotti Dog-killing illness in Ohio remains mystery; theory points to new circovirus AKRON, Ohio The Ohio Department of Agriculture said it has received calls from veterinarians and anxious dog owners throughout the state who are concerned their animals might have contracted a new virus that can kill in as little as 48 hours from the onset of symptoms, said Erica Pitchford Hawkins, communications director for the department. We have had numerous calls from all across the state. We haven t been tracking them on a map, but they have been from more areas than the two, she said, referring to Cincinnati and Akron-Canton. Three dogs in the Cincinnati area died and a dozen more were sickened last month with the illness. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea and vomiting, extreme lethargy, neurological problems, a lack of appetite and other maladies. This illness has apparently also shown up in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa and Alabama. Dogs cannot "catch" this virus from pigs, He said the best thing that dog-owners can do is to behave as people do in a flu epidemic. Dog parks, especially, should be avoided. As for dog shows, he says that it is up to individuals to determine their own comfort level regarding risk. Clearly, do not allow your dogs to be near the poop of other dogs.
