1 THE BARKER Southern Colorado Kennel Club Newsletter June 2017 President s Message Hope everyone is finding a way to stay cool during our recent 90 degree or better weather. Make sure your pups also have a cool spot and plenty of water. I know this doesn t need saying, but just a reminder, cars heat up quickly, so please do not leave your dogs in the cars while it is this warm. The nose work ORT (Odor Recognition Test) held in May was very successful. There were over 90 tests completed on May 13 th not all dogs passed, but there were many happy owners at the end of the day. I would like to extend a special thank you to Diana Behling, Pat Hill, Pat Lester and Renee Wolfe for the time and effort they put forth cleaning and organizing the Training Center at the end of May. It is amazing how by rearranging equipment, we seem to have more available space. Hope you all see it at our June meeting. Elections for two (2) Board of Director positions will be held during our June meeting. You should find their resumes in this newsletter. This is your opportunity to have a voice as to who serves of the Board of Directors. These are two year positions. Once again I encourage everyone to check the website for classes and start dates. There are several new classes being offered. In addition we are making some changes to some of our classes, particularly the puppy class. Please note that puppies will now need to be at least 16 weeks old and have had THREE (3) sets of shots. Since club members often tell their friends and neighbors about the classes, this is important information to know. If other changes occur we will continue to keep you all informed. 2 President s Message Cont... It is that time of year again to renew your membership in the club. Diana Behling, SCKC Secretary is accepting your dues. Save yourself the postage and catch her at the meeting. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting. It will be held at the Training Center on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at 7:00 PM. Committees: Building: The air cooler should be running next week. The window by the door should be opened when the swamper is running and people are in the building. Training Center: The team that cleaned the center prior to the ORT did an amazing job! Classes are going wonderfully. New classes starting all the time. Puppy class starts Monday, and another one later in the week. Next Tue, beginner class. Some people are repeating the classes with their dogs. Intermediate class starting next week. A novice rally class is a possibility. Let Becca or Pat L. know if you are interested. A tricks class is also possible. Pat appreciates all the help she is getting. Our training classes provide the income that pays for the center. Everyone is encouraged to be teachers and trainers to our customers, and not act as a judge of customers, their dogs, or skills. Show: Renee is working on the premium list. If you are working on something that needs to be included, please get the information to Renee. List is due in June so it will be published before the end of August and available to people in a timely manner. Obedience & rally judges are approved. Donations for trophies are going well. Please check with your vet to see if they would like to donate. Pam can provide a form for them to fill out. Dr. Seal has contributed. Mesa Vet will contribute next year. We need a grounds person for the show. This would require attendance all 3 days (Wed, Thur, Fri). Please see Renee if you are interested. If you have a recommendation for a conformation judge for 2018, please contact Renee with suggestions. One criteria is that the judge has not judged in a show in this area for a year prior to the show.

3 May Membership Meeting Minutes Cont... Events: Summer outing. Dee will be sending out a blast . The picnic will be Sunday, August 6th with time to be determined. If you would like to recommend a BBQ for take out, please let Dee know. There is a dog park in the area if you want to bring your dog. President s Report: Old Business: Fire department rescue masks: Renee was able to find a supplier that provided free replacement parts. We have 10 or 12 pieces, and the fire department needs eight. They need 2 new masks, and for about $50 we could provide those to them. It is moved and seconded that we spend the $50 to purchase 2 medium sized masks. It is noted that this is part of our public service. The motion passes. Sheriff s department vests: They do not need vests, but they do need three first aid kits for the dogs that are used in the field. Kits run from $100 to $120. It is moved and seconded that we purchase 3 of the more expensive kits. Motion passes. It is moved and seconded that we use the emergency fund money to pay for these kits. If there is not enough in the fund, we will fill the difference from the general fund. Motion passes. Board elections. The ballot includes 2 board positions: Milli Goodman and Dee Dunlap. We will take nominations from the floor: Pam Houston is nominated/seconded. Odor Recognition Test was successful. We had 100 entries, and 94 actual participants. There were many positive comments about the facility. We made money. Junior Showmanship seminar was successful. Twenty-four participants and one audit. The trainers did not charge, so we provided gift cards to them. Costs were minimal. Many of the participants were 4-H. New Business: None Membership: Trudy Gagas. Accepted Adjourned at 8:10. 4 Milli Goodman, Nominee For Position on Board of Directors, SCKC June 2017 I joined SCKC somewhere around 2003 when I had a young dog, was pretty clueless about dog training, and had never seen a dog show. I have learned so much from this club and want to give back some of my time and energy. I love that our club supports both performance and conformation events and provides excellent training to our members and the public. My personal achievements include 2 Titles in Rally Novice, one in Beginners Novice Obedience, one Odor Recognition Test, and a Grand Championship in Conformation which included an invitation to Westminster in At the AKC National Finals that year along with my dogs co-owner, our dogs won Best of Breed, Best of Opposite, Best Bred By Exhibitor, and Best Owner Handled Kuvasz. In 2015, my dog was named Top Kuvasz Sire by Dogs In Review magazine. I was a member of my national breed club, Kuvasz Club of America, but dropped my membership when I observed underhanded and unethical practices including judging manipulation. Differences in opinion were not handled in an open and respectful manner and I could not support how the club was managed. I served as SCKC Secretary from and am currently Publicity Chairman for this year s dog show. I have served on the Board of Directors since July 2016 and would be pleased to continue in this capacity for another term. My goals for the future of SCKC are to continue the growth of our membership and to help educate the public in the value of pure bred dogs and responsible dog ownership to support all of our 4 legged friends. Thank you for your consideration. Dee Dunlap, Nominee For Position on Board of Directors, SCKC June 2017 I would like to continue to serve my club on the SCKC Board of Directors. I have served for two terms and have enjoyed supporting my club and watching it grow. I also enjoy being a voice for the Rally and Obedience members and working as a steward every year that I have been a member. I became a member in 2006 and have learned so much about training and showing my dogs thanks to the many wonderful trainers we have. They have enabled me to put an RAE title on my Golden Retriever and were there to offer advice and support throughout the process. I have been active as a co-trainer in Rally and Agility (as needed) off and on for several years. It is gratifying to watch others learn and grow in their dog handling skills. I have repaired the agility table and acquired the "Move-it" for the club's A-frame. I also assisted in building new ring gates for the training center. This year I am responsible for securing a location for the summer outing and, hopefully, making it an enjoyable event for all. I am the chairperson for the silent auction which was started 3 years ago to help pay for repairs and upgrades in the training center. We have been successful, through the generosity of our members, to raise $600 +/- each year. Our members and trainers have always stepped up to the plate to support our club. It has been a pleasure for me to give back to the club that has given me so much.

5 Pam Houston, Nominee For Position on Board of Directors, SCKC June 2017 Objective: I would like to become a SCKC Board member to assist with the club s growth and direction. I believe my education, business and dog experiences, leadership skills, energy, and my devotion to dogs can benefit this organization. I will demonstrate a responsible, mature and ethical approach in all matters. I will strive to promote and exercise good communication skills at all times. Club History: I have been a return member since Assisting with cleaning the training facility numerous times, helped at the fun match 2010, represented at Mesa Vet Community Day 2013, served on the trophy committee in 2013 and currently the 2017 trophy chairman. I have been happy to assist in other areas as needed. Other Dog Membership: Rocky Mountain Yorkshire Terrier Club Currently serving as Vice President. Dog Experience: Began my dog experience at age 9 when I joined a 4-H dog club. Dog project member 10 years. Followed by serving as a dog project leader 12 years. I have judged 4-H dog project record books, obedience and showmanship. Employed as a groomer, kennel assistant, and animal control officer. Assisted my two sons as they raised, socialized and trained a total of 5 puppies for Eyes for the Blind. This was a 3 year experience with new challenges. I was active with community education of the rights of these dogs in business, school, church, etc I began showing AKC obedience in 1970 and confirmation in Took 30 years off to raise and support a family and returned to my registered dogs in Currently raise Yorkshire Terriers and show confirmation. I am working with my retired champions for a return to the obedience and rally rings. Summary: I have the desire and time to devote to this club which benefits so many. Each club member belongs for a different reason. I believe I can represent all with the same honest and dedicated desire to continue improving this valuable club and it s activities. 6 June Board Meeting Minutes June 6, 2017 Called to Order: 7:00 pm Members present: Helen O Conner, Renee Wolfe, Diana Behling, Flo Andrews, Gary Owens, Barb Curtis, Milli Goodman, Dee Dunlap Treasurer s Report: Approved as written Correspondence: None Training Center: We did deep cleaning in June and organized chairs and agility equipment. (Renee, Diana, Pat Hill, Pat Lester). There is a set of weave poles and some other articles that we do not use. Helen will send out an to auction these off. (New business). Can we purchase a rack of folding chairs to replace the older, damaged chairs? The cooler is up and running. Remember not to block the door out to the street. This is required egress Our new arrangement uses all the gates, so we will need to build a few extra gates. There will be a meeting scheduled for trainers this month. Show: Prelim premium list due tomorrow. We picked up two more specialties: Visula and Bouvier des Flandres. We will have a heart doc and eye clinic and we will be doing AKC microchipping. All the judges have been approved. We have been able to cut costs on prizes. We still need a grounds person. Canine influenza has been an issue at some shows. The actual risk is low and we don't need to panic. Old Business: Summer outing. RSVP to Dee. So far there are about 10 attending. She will send out another to the membership. Elections in June. We need a board member and 2 club members to tally the votes. Candidates need to send resumes to Will to publish in the Barker. The masks and fittings came in and first aid kits are ordered. The Objectives of the Southern Colorado Kennel Club are: To further the advancement of all breeds of purebred dogs; To conduct dog shows and/or obedience trials, field trials, and sanctioned matches under the rules of the American Kennel Club; To foster an appreciation of the purebred dog as a worker, protector, companion, or pet; To support community projects concerning purebred dogs.
