1 THE BARKER Southern Colorado Kennel Club Newsletter January 2018 President s Message Greetings Everyone: I find it amazing how fast time seems to fly. Hard to believe we are starting another new year. Please take a few minutes to visit the website ( to view the training class schedule. There are several classes which have just begun and many drop-in classes on the schedule. I am sure you will find something for you and your dog to participate in during the coming year. If you are not finding what you want, contact Pat Lester (patlester@hughes.net), the class could be in the works or you can give her a new idea for a class. Happy training. We will be continuing to have presentations at the beginning of our monthly meetings. Kathy Gallina has offered to organize these and ended 2017 with a very interesting presenter. If you have any suggestions, let her know (kgallina@ .com). In this edition of the Barker, you will find a copy of the 2017 Report from the Colorado Federation of Dog Clubs and Owners. It summarizes the legislative activity for 2017 and shows what is coming up in We are members of this club and I believe Gary & Donna Owens are our representatives. Lots of interesting information in this report. It was a very successful show and we have so many club members to thank for making it happen. Just a quick reminder your eligibility for free classes is based on 2017 information. The slate is cleared in January 2018 ad we all begin earning the steps toward eligibility. The requirements include attending at least 4 membership meetings and offering at least 8 hours of help supporting club activities (dog show, instructing training classes, cleaning the training center, etc.) If you have any questions regarding this see an officer or any of the board members. 3 COLORADO FEDERATTION OF DOG CLUBS AND OWNERS 2017 End of Year Update from the Board 2017 was a year of the unexpected. But we met every challenge and stood firm for the dog community in Colorado. This was all made possible by your support as kennel clubs and individuals. The Federation does not depend on one person for its success or existence, but upon volunteers and supporters in our show community such as you. Without you, each and every one of you, the Federation could not exist or accomplish its promise to defend the rights of all dog owners in our state. In the spring 2017 state legislative session we saw a bill ( ) that was one of the most convoluted bills we have ever seen. It was presented as to regulate home boarding facilities under the PACFA laws in Colorado, but then morphed into a bill to exempt them. We had been tracking this bill and finally stepped in to try to either kill it or make it a bill we could live with. Everyone had given up on being able to kill or change the bill since the supporting side (Rover.com) had brought in some big lobbyists to stop any opposition. We were told that there was nothing we could do to change it. The type of challenge we ve been known to take on in the past when told that same statement! We asked you to step in quickly to call/ your legislators, and you did! Legislators were asking us to stop the flow of opposition calls and s that flowed in the next day. We met with the sponsor of the bill and explained to him our opposition to the bill as written and he agreed to our changes to the law. It was passed with those changes made which made the bill an acceptable one. For the upcoming 2018 legislative session we know at least one bill is going to be introduced that will as currently written affect the dog show community and breeders. That proposed bill is being called the Pet Animal Purchase Protection Act. It puts requirements on those selling any dog that are unacceptable and unworkable, as well as defining anyone who sells even one dog as a pet animal dealer. A dog or cat with any deformity or disease would be defined as Unfit for sale and you would not be able to sell them or adopt them out. You could only give them away for free. So, with that definition in place a puppy with a bad bite or leg deformity could not be sold, even if it would still make a good pet. If that puppy or dog dies within 14 days of purchase or adoption it is presumed under this law to have been unfit for sale and you would have to refund the purchase price and possibly vet bills. So as written if it runs out the door and gets hit by a car, you as the pet dealer are responsible. There is even more to dislike about this bill but that gives you an idea of what is included that is of concern to us. We will be attending what is called a Stake Holders meeting on 12/20/17 at the capitol and will let the Federation members know what more we find out. We are working closely with the AKC Legislative Department and National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) to insure that this bill either dies or is significantly amended. Colorado already has a basic Lemon Law that covers all defective purchases, so this bill is not really needed to protect consumers. We also are lending a helping hand to our neighboring state of Wyoming and the Cheyenne Kennel Club. The AKC Legislative Department called and asked if we could help, so of course we said yes. A law proposal in Cheyenne was of concern for dog breeders on lost dogs that required mandatory spay/neuter. We met with a committee made up of a Cheyenne City Councilperson, City Attorney, Cheyenne Shelter Manager, Cheyenne KC president and two Continued on Page 4...

4 COLORADO FEDERATION OF DOG CLUBS AND OWNERS Continued... concerned citizens to discuss options. The Federation and CKC are putting together a proposal that would help resolve the problems that Cheyenne is experiencing with loose dogs and dog bites in a positive way. CKC and NAIA are assisting in those efforts as requested. A follow up meeting is scheduled for January. On basic business issues, we will have a brief delegates meeting Sunday February 18th at the CKC dog show. If attending delegates approve, we will move the Annual meeting to April at the Terry-All shows which seems to improve attendance. We will also be having a membership drive this year for clubs as well as individual members who would like to support the good works being done to protect our rights as dog owners, breeders and fanciers. If you think you would like to get more involved in our work, please let us know! Thank you again for your continued support and involvement. 5 Learn the Breeds: Alaskan Malamute The Alaskan Malamute is a large breed of domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) originally bred for hauling heavy freight because of their strength and endurance, and later a sled dog. They are similar to other arctic breeds, such as the Greenland Dog, Canadian Eskimo Dog, the Siberian Husky, and the Samoyed. The first dogs arrived in the Americas 12,000 years ago; however, people and their dogs did not settle in the Arctic until the Paleo-Eskimo people 4,500 years ago and then the Thule people 1,000 years ago, both originating from Siberia. Origin: United States (Alaska) Weight: Male: 85 lb, Female: 75 lb Height: Male: 25 inches, Female: 23 inches Group: Working More Information about the Alaskan Malamute - wiki/alaskan_malamute Alaskan Malamute DATES TO REMEMBER Next Club Meeting: Tuesday January 16, 2018 Time: 7 PM Location: SCKC Training Center Next Board Meeting: Tuesday February 6th, 2018 Time: 6:30 PM Dog Shows Upcoming Dog Shows Around Us (January/ February): Rosenberg, TX January 20, 2018 to January 21, 2018 Phoenix, AZ February 1, 2018 t0 February 5, 2018 Hobbs, NM February 3, 2018 to February 4, 2018 St. Joseph, MO February 10, 2018 to February 11, 2018 Midland, TX February 15, 2018 to February 18, 2018 Aurora, CO February 15, 2018 Denver, CO February 15, 2018 Aurora, CO February 16, 2018 to February 17, 2018 Denver, CO February 17, 2018 to February 19, 2018 Wichita Falls, TX February 16, 2018 to February 18, 2018
