1 The Barker NEWSLETTER OF THE SOUTHERN COLORADO KENNEL CLUB March, 2013 Editor Kat Walden March 19- Membership Meeting April 2-Board Meeting April 16- Membership Meeting President: Will Hughes Vice President: Renee Wolfe E. Hwy 50 East 3104 Morris Ave Pueblo, CO Pueblo, CO Secretary: Milli Goodman Treasurer: Flo Andrews Chantala Ave Hwy 96 E. Pueblo, CO Avondale, CO Board Members: Allen Campbell Lisa Golob Pat Hill Connie Smalley Show Chairman: 2012 Renee Wolfe Obedience: Pat Hill Rally: Flo Andrews AKC Delegate: Lee Arnold Trophy Committee People are needed to serve on the Trophy Committee for our November show. I will need people who can approach business owners and get sponsorships for the classes, groups and miscellaneous awards. People are needed in the following areas: Pueblo East, Pueblo South, Pueblo North, Pueblo West, Canon City, Arkansas Valley towns, Pueblo Mesa Dee Dunlap/Jennifer Sams, South 1-25 towns (including Rye, Colorado City, Trinidad and Walsenburg) This year we are trying to reach towns that people would be driving through to reach the show site, and will encourage exhibitors to visit these businesses on their way through. I will have specific lists for you to go by because I do know there are businesses in Pueblo who will not allow solicitations. The lists will include all the potential breeds, and a listing of possible awards to be given. We are taking donations for Conformation, Junior Handlers, Obedience and Rally classes. As our numbers (and those of neighboring shows) have been down for the past couple years, it is very important to get as many sponsorships as possible to help defray costs. The breed awards this year will again be slip leads. I have heard many positive comments about these prizes. If you wish to donate something different for your breed, I must have these prizes in my possession by June 1, or it will be removed from the Premium List. Unfortunately we had awards listed last year that were not delivered to the show, and had no back-up plan for these, so this will have to be the policy.
2 As always, club members will have first pick of awards/breed sponsorships. There are envelopes at the Training Center that you will need to fill out and include a check or money order to reserve your breed/award. These are on a first come- first served basis. I will not hold breeds without the form and payment. We will only be soliciting sponsorships for our two days of the show. The other club(s) will be in charge of their own awards. If you are able to help with this please me at donna.darnell@ymail.com or call Finally a special thanks to DeeAnn Ying and Connie Smalley for all their help at last years show! You ladies are rally great to work with! Donna Darnell Trophy Chair BARN HUNT Barn Hunt titles will now be recognized by the AKC. Barn Hunts and Barn Hunt clinics are being held in Colorado and they are open to all breeds. The following is from the Barn Hunt Association website: The purpose of barn hunt is to demonstrate a dog s ability to finding and marking in a barn like setting using straw/hay bales to introduce climbing and tunneling obstacles in the dog s path. Barn hunt is based on the skills historically used be itinerant rat catchers in traveling the countryside, ridding farms of vermin, thus helping conserve good grains and cutting down on disease. While rat catchers often used breeds such as Jack/Parson Russell Terriers, they also used other non-go- to- ground breeds such as Manchester Terriers, Rat Terriers, and a variety of non-spannable breeds (breeds whose chests cannot be spanned by two hands, a mark of many go-to-ground breeds) of small to medium size. These breeds have never had an officially licensed test which truly emulates their traditional working task. Barn hunt will fill that role. Barn hunt is also for any breed or mix of dog who loves to hunt and can it through an 18 wide gap between two hay bales. It will test agility, speed and surefootedness. While not specifically targeted at larger dogs or dogs without a vermin hunting history, Barn Hunt is inclusive and fun for any dog and human who wished to play the game. Barn Hunt is a sporting event, and as such there will be levels of difficulty, titles and championships to be obtained. While it can be used as an instinct test, there is also a handler component in that the handler must signal when the dog has reached the desired target PVC rat tube; thus, the handler must know and have a partnership with their dog. Teamwork will win the game. Barn Hunt can be held indoors or outdoors in a barn-like setting or on any piece of level ground approximately 20x30 feet that can be closed securely with gating/fencing. At all times, the safety of the dogs, handlers and rats is to be of paramount importance. Rats will be humanely handled and safely confined in aerated PVC tubes. Barn Hunt is not intended to harm or kill rats. March Book Review By Diana Werner Kathy Rimmer, editor, Two Plus Four Equals One: Celebrating the Partnership of People with Disabilities and Their Assistance Dogs. Indianapolis, Dog Ear Publishing, Available at Pueblo public library. As in so many of the books I've reviewed, the title says it all. All of us, I think, admire working dogs. Not necessarily the official Working Breeds of the AKC, but dogs who work: search-and-rescue dogs, police dogs, assistance dogs. This book has a very simple premise: people with assistance dogs write a few paragraphs, or a few pages, or maybe a poem, about their dog and the difference their assistance dog has made in their lives. Corny? Sure. Or maybe a better metaphor would be an apple--golden and delicious. Brags!!! Brags From the Denver Shows: 2

Several club members attended the art show reception and spoke directly to Dr Anselm. Pueblo Animal Services sent us a request to write Pueblo County Commissioners in support of continuing PAS. This prompted a discussion. A motion carried instructing our Board of Directors to research details and bring a proposal to the membership so that we can make a recommendation to the County Commissioners as a club. Committees: Our legislative liaison, E. Wertenberger, reported on the Colorado Federation of Dog Clubs annual meeting held last weekend in Denver. There will be Dog Day at the State Capital on March 6 th, 11AM-1PM. The event will serve to educate the state legislature of all the benefits that dogs and dog owners bring to the state, and promote positive public relation. Training Center. Any member interesting in serving on the BOD should contact one of these people. New Business: A local hospice organization is rehoming dogs for their clients and has requested that we consider offering discounted training sessions for a person willing to take on a new dog. After discussion, a motion carried that we will offer a free series of classes for this situation. Anyone interested in pursuing these options is asked to follow up with the BOD. Membership: Second reading for Earline Upton. She was voted in. Adjourned at 8:30 PM. Respectfully submitted by Milli Goodman, Secretary SCKC March 5, 2013 Board Meeting Called to order at 6:35 PM Present: Will Hughes, Connie Smalley, Allen Campbell, Renee Wolfe, Milli Goodman, Lisa Golob, Pat Hill, Flo Andrews Treasurer s Report: reviewed and accepted. Nomination Committee: Nominations are due and will be offered at the April General meeting. 4
5 AKC Delegate meeting: to be held March 12. We will instruct our delegate to vote as following: 1. for Board seat, Lee Arnold (our club delegate), 2. On proposed amendments, yes on all three presented. (Add an object which the AKC has in effect for decades with support of canine health research areas; Expand eligibility requirements for AKC membership to permit licensed agility clubs that meet criteria to apply to become AKC member clubs; Reduce the number of yearly Delegate meetings from four to three and suggests that two meetings be expanded from 2 days to 3 days in order to enable increased attendance at various Delegate Committee meetings.) Old Business: Will is working with Royal Canin to present some sort of educational seminar. Will has contacted the Latino Chamber of Commerce and Renee the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce. We could join either or both at a non-profit dues rate and it could bring great benefits to our club. A representative from the Latino group will be invited to our next board meeting for further discussion. New Business: One of our club members has made a request that we consider purchasing a service dog for her. The request was discussed and declined, as it is not in our primary mission. We have been contacted by a group called Pet Peace of Mind that rehomes or provides foster homes for pets of current hospice patients. They request that we consider offering discount training sessions as needed. Lisa agreed to gather more information from them before we discuss further. We did discuss and agreed that we will offer incentives to our puppy class graduates to go on to the next level of training class at a $10 discount. We discussed the Dog Days at the State Capital scheduled for March 6. Unfortunately no one from the BOD will be able to attend. We discussed our current Web site and how to keep it current. Will agreed to follow up. Adjourned at 7:50 PM. respectively submitted, Milli Goodman SCKC Secretary Individual Evolution of Showing By Kat Walden The conformation ring at a dog show is a unique place where you will observe professionals, people with years of experience, weekend enthusiast, beginners, juniors and even too young to be a junior all competing against each other for the win. I can t think of any other event I have participated in where that can be said. As you look at the rings some breeds will have more professionals than armatures and others will be just the reverse. So how do you win? For the sake of this writing we are going to take politics out of play and assume the playing field is level as each individual enters the ring with their dog. Each person entering the ring is the handler for the dog they have at the end of the leash. So here are some thoughts I have on this topic. It is the handler s job to know the strengths and weaknesses of their dog. If you believe your dog has no faults or you don t know what they are you need to learn. It is the handler s job to know how to present the strengths and not draw attention to the weaknesses. So, each dog you show won t be shown the same. I can t begin to tell you how many times we ve been told by one of our mentors when being frustrated about something that happened in the ring that it s your fault, you have to figure out how to fix it. It is the handler s job to show good sportsmanship win or lose. I recently stood ringside and heard someone who had just won say very loudly, and they said we couldn t beat these over angled dogs. Have you ever seen someone in the ring that didn t place throw theirs hands up in the air and make a sarcastic remark about not winning? Or seen the person who wasn t in the ribbons not finish the final go around and just walk out of the ring? I ve actually seen someone win after the judge told them to come back to the lineup after walking away in frustration because they thought they lost. Our body language says a lot and sometimes it may not be what we what people to hear. Each time we enter the ring or watch a dog show is a learning opportunity. Try to emulate what you see someone do that catches your eye and note the things you don t like and don t do them. I don t think a single one of us enters the ring with a dog thinking the dog isn t good enough to win. How fortunate for us as I m sure there a dogs that professionals show that they know isn t the best dog out there and yet they still show it like it is. The evolution piece of this comes when you see what you see as success changes. Three years ago we were happy just to be in the ribbons. This weekend we were frustrated with our third major reserve and fifth overall on the same dog that isn t even two yet. As our level of skill and success changes so do our expectations. We now look at each loss as what we could have done better instead of chalking it up to another political judge putting up handlers. Pat Trotter writes of Woebegone where it s a perfect world. Well with enough pieces of the puzzle in place we can create our own Woebegone some of the time. 5
