13 RESCUE FAMILY OF THE YEAR AWARD The following award is presented to the person, or family that exhibits extraordinary care, dedication and personal sacrifice in their rescue efforts This year, we are awarding our Rescue Award to two special families. Both families have played a vital role in the Rags to Riches story and without both of them, there would never have been the happy ending that you are about to hear. Belle, a recently discarded breeder dog, came into their life at a time when Belle needed them as much as they needed her. Jim and Cathy Shirak had just lost their beloved young Wheaten in a tragic accident. Belle came into Rescue in deplorable condition from years of neglect in the mill. It was a perfect match to start the healing process for all, including their Wheaten, Bridey. Thanks to Cathy s research on the care and diet for an extremely neglected dog, Belle slowly showed a will to live, with each few ounces gained, Cathy celebrated their success. A dog like Belle would not be flourishing if not for these extraordinary people. They have generously paid for much of her care that was above and beyond the usual, as it included a majority of her teeth being extracted, special diet, and conditioning for severe skin and coat issues. Jim s partners in his company voted to make a donation to Wheaten Rescue after hearing about Belle and her long journey back to health and human trust. When the time came for Belle to meet her new family, her foster mom Cathy, and Mary Yourich traveled to the Illinois border to introduce her to her new family. Ruth and Al Wolf graciously opened their home, not only to Belle, but to Cathy and Mary as well, and they were invited to spend the night too. This is where the riches came in. Belle is living the dream. She now lives in a beautiful home with new parents who adore her. They are diligently working with her to overcome her fears, and she is doing amazingly well in her new, loving home. Now enter Chicken aka Chickie into this Rags to Riches story Rescue was contacted by a lady in Alabama, who wanted to place her 12 year old Wheaten, so she could have a kitten. After accepting the reason, but not understanding or agreeing with it, two of our members from that area worked together to help Chickie. Many thanks to Alison Bradley for fostering her until the best home could be acquired. Al and Ruth learned of her needing a forever home and decided to open their home to her as usual. They knew that another Wheaten would be a positive addition to Belle s recovery. Through some amazing coincidences, Chickie was able to hitch a free ride to her final destination, many thanks to Mary Yourich s Cousin Margaret! This is such a happy ending for two discarded Wheatens who are now living the last of their years in a well- deserved, loving home. It is SCWTCA s pleasure to offer our Rescue Family Of The Year Award to: Cindy & Jim Shirak ~And~ Al & Ruth Wolf
14 WHEATEN AMBASSADOR AWARD The following award is presented to the SCWT that has made a difference in the community First, let me say that I am embarrassed and honored that Marshall is being considered for this award. Believe me when I tell you that we certainly do not do therapy work for the recognition. The effect that Marshall has on children who are suffering and stressed is more than enough reward for what we do. Marshall is certified by the Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He has undergone several evaluations prior to certification as a therapy dog. Locally, he is affiliated with Roxy Readers, a therapy dog group who has the charter to support one of our school districts, the courthouse, the hospital, and several other entities. Marshall has been active in rescue for over a year now. Marshall goes weekly to an emotional support class at a local grade school. He spends approximately two hours having the children read to him and interacting with them on a one to one basis. Marshall also supports the high school at bereavement counseling groups. These students have lost a family member and meet to help each other through the grief. Marshall also goes to the courthouse to support children in dependency court. These children are having their futures adjudicated and they and there parents are stressed to the max. Marshall provides a calming presence for them. Marshall is one of our rescue dogs. He has severe health issues (high White Blood Count and sputum slinging) that were too costly for his family to afford so they turned Marshall in to our rescue. I was his foster dad and rather than spend a lot of rescue funds on Marshall, I adopted him. We have done over $5000 in testing to try to find the root cause of Marshall s issues, but so far have only been assure that the condition should not shorten his life and that he is physically able to withstand the rigors of agility training and therapy work. ~ Bob Peck It is SCWTCA s pleasure to offer our Wheaten Ambassador Award to: Bob Peck & Marshall
15 AKC OUTSTANDING SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD The AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award program was established in 2006 to provide each member club with an AKC Medallion to award to one of its own on a yearly basis.
