Combine all your ingredients into a food processor and pulse for 20 seconds, scrape down the sides and pulse again until everything is mixed. Then, using a spoon, just spoon out the dough onto cookie sheets. These are like drop cookies. You can make them larger or smaller as you like. If you have a big dog, make them bigger, maybe even using two spoonfuls per dog treat. If you have a small dog, use less dough to make smaller dog treats you're in control of the size :) Bake for 20 minutes. You can store these at room temperature for 2-3 weeks or in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. You can also make extra and freeze them!

PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The ISCA National in Virginia was a great success. The grounds were beautiful and for the most part the weather cooperated. It was exciting driving on to the grounds Monday to see the agility run-throughs already in progress. The Hyatt was filling up with old friends and EISA members. The party had started! The week went by in a flash as we made new friends, enjoyed old friends, learned about our breed and watched a never-ending stream of beautiful dogs proving that our Irish are beautiful, athletic and intelligent. We had a great turn out at the Bucks picnic in May. There was a lot of tasty food and we couldn't have asked for better weather. It was nice to have so many annual awards to hand out this year. Congratulations to everyone who got one and thanks to Lydia for once again coordinating them and the picnic. Thanks to Fran and Charlie for bringing their litter of 11 pups to the picnic. Not only was it fun playing with the pups, but it was fun grading the litter too. Anne Marie Kubacz and Mary Merlo were both there and shared how much and why they liked each pup. It's always a good thing to learn about structure. I'll be interested in seeing how they grow up. As someone who does agility, obedience, and field work, it's very important to me to have a well-balanced dog that is structurally sound. If my dog can't hold up over time, all the training I put in will be wasted. Knowing how to choose the right dog is really important. Anne Marie also let us know about a new test done by Dr. Ronald Schultz that can determine exactly when puppies should be vaccinated based on a titer test done on the bitch. If anyone is planning a litter it would be worth investigating. Our next chance to get together will be July 21st at noon for the Fun Day. There is more information in the newsletter so check it out. I hope to see everyone there. Lynn 3

EISA at the National By Debra Hamilton, Assistant-Chair 2013 ISCA National Dog Show Members of Eastern Irish Setter Association seemed to be everywhere at the 2013 ISCA National Dog Show. You might have seen members working at the reception table, setting up the show site, helping with clean-up, making announcements, hawking for vendors and helping with judge s education. Ann Marie Kubacz, fundraiser extraordinaire, took charge of tent placement, worked with Vendor Chair Beth Ritchie, for vendor placement, created parking on a jigsaw puzzle of land and did anything that needed doing to keep the wheels on the National bus. Mariette O Malley organized the wonderful Region I hospitality along with Lynne Godchall, Maureen Day ISCLI, Denise Dolence, Denise Hall and Randy Kubacz. Karolynne McAteer pitched in as Ring Steward in both Performance and Conformation, another Jack of All Trades EISA member. In her spare time she assisted with Trophies and Grounds. Sandy Jones and Kaolynne McAteer were Songbirds two of the three mornings. Susan Sullivan, Denise Dolence and Susan Kwiatkowski helped at the Welcome/ Registration table on site and several times at the hotel. 6

Brad Porterfield spent many hours traveling with, hawking and picking up Leapin Leprechauns for the months preceding the April show. He is an amazing salesman, seeing they were thrown at alternate show sites from Peter and Ann Marie Kubacz to raise money for the National. Grooming with the Stars was a huge success and fundraiser. Organized by AMK and Pete Kubacz, we were fortunate to have all their grooming friends present sharing their personal trimming secrets while raising funds for the host club. Fran Sloughfy was our hands-on Trophy chair as well as annual awards mistress of ceremony with her EISA Helpers Lynn Kwiatkowski and Lynne Godshall. She was on the grounds each day helping set up and direct traffic. Susan Sullivan frantically took pictures for the memo collage. Everywhere I looked EISA members were working hard while enjoying the National. Hopefully I didn t leave anyone out, but if I did I am truly sorry. 7

AGILITY: What Makes Pursuit of the Clean Run so Enticing? Lynne Godshall Is it the satisfaction that comes when you are at one with another of God s creatures, working in rhythm to the beat of each other s ebb and flow? Could it be the pride that comes from years of step-by-step problem solving exercises to learn each other s Language? It starts the day you bring the puppy home or actually when you choose it from its litter mates. You try and maximize the chances of getting that dog that will be fearless, move like a million bucks, have the rollicking personality to slough off mistakes and try again. You hope they will have that inherent ability of self control, the desire to wait for instructions and the ability to curl up at the end of the job and relax. The Beginning, the Pick Will that 7-week-old puppy pick up the piece of crumbled paper and bring it back, will it come over to a complete stranger when it is all by itself in a strange place? Will it follow that person; does it relax when lifted gently off the ground? Sometimes these simple little tests can give you insight as to how the puppy sees the world. But there is still another test to see if it may shine in the breed world and be worthy of reproducing. Little Green Girl passed all these tests and became Lady. She arrived into a world Of Mother May I, Premack Theory. Nothing in Life is Free or as I call it the Grandmother Clause. Eat your String Beans and you can have Ice Cream. Sit and you can get out of the ex-pen, sit and the door opens, sit and the world comes to you. This is the beginning of Impulse Control work that as Bird Dogs they need in order to hold point and wait for further info before they are allowed to retrieve. This behavior turns into my agility start line, contact and table performances. And, it also gives the dog its on and off behavior that allows her to relax when the job is done and not waste energy. (To be continued in our next issue) 12

WHY OBEDIENCE? -Susan Kwiatkowski OBEDIENCE, the very word in the dog world conjures up thoughts of rote actions and unanimated dogs sitting by the owner s side. Well, Webster defines it in terms of executing an order or following guidance and BEING UNDER CONTROL. When a pup enters our hearts and our homes we start teaching the pup what it can do, where it can go, in another word obedience. We acclimate the dog to its new environment. Unfortunately, we often forget to take the dog and its newly learned skills to places outside its immediate environment and test the pup with a RECALL command. At the Cluster in Connecticut last October and again at the National in Virginia, I witnessed two incidents of dogs that got loose in unexpected situations, a bolt from an ex pen and an upturned grooming table. No matter the cause, there was a frightened, frantic dog on the loose. I noted that well intentioned people on the grounds immediately attempted to catch the escapee. The correct techniques were not used. People started running which escalated the dog s fear and the dogs started running faster and farther in an attempt to escape. So I present a few suggestions on what to do and what not to do when offering assistance to capture the ESCAPEE. Form a large circle around the dog. WALK in a direction at an angle to the dog giving the impression that you are not after the dog. Don t run. Running is high energy and dogs feed off our energy. STAY CALM. If possible stop when the dog looks in your direction. Keep the dog in your peripheral vision, walking to keep the dog from a dangerous location. All folks in the circle should be moving with the same intent so the circle moves in the same direction. NEVER walk directly toward a dog. That will encourage the dog to run the opposite way. Don t make direct eye contact with the dog. That is read as a threat. Never grab at a loose dog. Try and coax the dog to come to you. Talk in a soothing voice if you are in earshot of a dog that has stopped running. Bend to the ground as if you are looking for something which might interest the dog which has stopped running. So WHY OBEDIENCE? It can save the life of a dog in so many situations because they are taught to listen and respond correctly. 13

PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND And WORK our 2013 EASTERN IRISH SETTER ASSOCIATION FIELD TRIAL! Eastern Irish Setter Association will hold its annual Field Trial on September 14th and 15th. Susan Sullivan is the chairman. Sandy Jones is the Field Trial secretary. Stakes for this year are Open Puppy, Open All Age, Open Gun Dog, Open Derby, Amateur Gun Dog, Open Limited Gun Dog, Amateur Walking Hunting Dog (non-reg), which is scheduled for Sunday during AGD. EVERYONE can enter his or her dog(s) in Amateur Walking Hunting Dog. It is a non-regular stake that allows the dogs to look for and find birds and have a fun hunting experience. FOOD MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE DAY and we hope there will be volunteers to work in the kitchen. The Field Trial will be held at the Ralph Kellam C&R CENTER in Petersburg, Delaware. The grounds are lovely and there is a clubhouse where attendees sit and chat with friends and enjoy breakfast and lunch. It is a wonderful experience, a chance to meet other Irish Setter owners and learn more about this performance event. There is an opportunity to find out if your puppy is birdy, or ride a horse in the gallery and watch the dogs hunt. There is even a special non- regular walking stake where newcomers can take their dogs out and see them hunt birds in the field. I am hopeful that club members will mark this event on their 2013 calendar. It is a fun filled, relaxed, weekend full of red dogs and lots of blarney. This is an event that truly illustrates the Beauty, Brains and Bird Sense that is the essence of our breed. Please contact susansullivan@mac.com if you plan to attend. 14

SLAG -Suz Slag, those gelatinous, slimy, elastic-like, tendrils of spit that emanate from the soft red jowls of our Irish best friends are a plague on the owners of this wonderful breed. One shake of a red head and these glutinous threads attach themselves to walls, doors, floors, furniture, TV s and, alas, our clothes and faces. YUCK, how could such sweet fuzzy lips wreak such havoc? Glue-like in nature, once attached they are difficult to remove. Fresh slag can be picked up at one end and sometimes winged off a finger. Dried slag is a nightmare. I have to admit that I have attempted to find a positive use for this viscous substance. I once used it to seal an envelope that had lost its adhesive. Worked like a charm once it dried and I figured the electric company wouldn t care. Other uses have escaped me. I can t help but think that if we could collect enough frothy slag 3M might have a new product for hanging pictures or stickum for post-its. In the meantime, what do we do? Well, Mr. Clean must have had Irish Setters! Totally by accident, I found that his extra strong, magic eraser removes slag from my walls, floors and any hard surface with warm water and very little effort. A miracle! REPORT FROM THE NEW JERSEY DOG FEDERATION MEETING Susan Kwiatkowski 4/1/2013: The meeting began with the educational program. Dr. Warren Briggs. a specialist in Laparoscopic Surgery, was introduced. He is a partner at the Ocean County Veterinary Hospital, 838 River Ave ( Rte ), Lakewood, NJ The thrust of the presentation was on Laparoscopic Ovariectomy (spaying). Dr. Briggs presented a video showing ovariectomy using the standard operation and a comparison with the laparoscopic technique. The amount of tissue disruption and bleeding is drastically reduced with the laparoscopic technique. The advantages of Laparoscopic Surgery include reduced time for the surgery, reduced amounts of anesthesia, reduced internal tissue damage and reduced healing time. The audience quickly turned the conversation to the use of laparoscopic surgery in cases of Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), also known as BLOAT. The surgery is referred to as Gastropexy the permanent attachment of the stomach to the abdominal wall. Dr. Briggs suggested that such gastropexy could be performed prophalactically if there is a canine family history of bloat. After the program, the official meeting began. The President, Jeffrey Ball, informed the delegates that he had funds collected for damage caused by Hurricane Sandy released to shelters with some difficulty. The web site is also being updated and there is a facebook page. The membership list is also being updated with the correct information for each member club. EISA information is up to date and accurate. Jeff informed us that he worked with a local community Animal Control officer where there was an issue with a resident and her dog. He hopes to make the NJDog Federation a go to resource for communities throughout the state to avoid making canine issues intractable. He hopes to offer them guidance on how to handle canine issues which appear to be in conflict with local laws. 17

What happens when Mother Nature separates us from our canine best friends? Read how the AKC helped pets and their owners in Tornado ravaged Oklahoma: Dear Delegate, DID YOU KNOW? by Karolynne McAteer The following is an update of the actions that the AKC staff has taken in reaction to the tragic events that took place in Oklahoma this week. The AKC and AKC CAR are working around the clock to provide assistance, supplies and financial aid to those affected by the devastating tornados. We felt it important to keep you up-to-date with the specific actions that have been taken so that you can communicate these actions with any outside parties who may ask you about our efforts. Supplies -AKC CAR has been able to personally deliver two rounds of supplies to the Animal Resource Center in Moore, OK. These included bowls, crates, leashes and other necessities. Along with the AKC, Mid-Del-Tinker KC, Oklahoma City KC and Lawton DFA members have been on site helping people at the shelter and our people stayed through the night Tuesday. Supplies have also been delivered to the Home Depot Emergency Shelter. These have included 200 micro-chips and 6 scanners as well as regular supplies. Donations AKC CAR donated $10,000 to Oklahoma State University (OSU) Animal Relief Fund, which is helping the OSU Center for Veterinary Sciences to provide free veterinary medical care to animals injured during Oklahoma's recent tornadoes. OSU has been able to put this donation to good work and is also managing to house many of the displaced animals. Communications The AKC team has provided real-time updates to our constituents via social media. These updates have included places to find missing pets, images of pets that have been found, a list of pet friendly shelters, how to help the people involved and also how to donate to AKC CAR to help aid the effort. To date we have raised over $48,000 to help assist the people and dogs of Oklahoma. A major positive for us is that both our AKC Dog Lovers Blog and the AKC Facebook page have become major destinations for people looking to get information on the situation. This is showcased in the 1.2M people that have visited these pages in the last 72 hours. Our images of owners being reunited with their pets have been particularly well received. 18

Con t We have seen major pick-up on our efforts all across the country, with a few examples shown here: Oklahoman 5/23/13: Healthday on Philly.com: _Simple_Steps_Can_Protect_Pets_in_Weather_Disasters.html Oklahoman 5/22/13: Pet Age: TMCnet: In addition to these efforts, a full press release will go to regional and national media this afternoon showing all our efforts and works by our people. We are hoping major media will pick-up on the good work we have done in OK this week. We will also be speaking on KTOA Radio - Oklahoma's largest talk radio station. On Tuesday, as a follow-up, we will also circulate to all media outlets a press release regarding AKC CAR SAR Grants, which again highlights the good works of AKC CAR. One other success we have had is the communication between the AKC and other major charitable organizations with our team having reached out to the following national organizations to offer our assistance in their efforts: Red Cross, Salvation Army, Americares, Samaritan's Purse, Team Rubicon Additionally, we are also on stand-by and have offered direct assistance to the following local clubs: Mel-Del-Tinker KC, Northeast OK KC, Oklahoma City KC, Town & Country KC, Central OK Toy Dog Club, Oklahoma City OTC, Boomer Boxer Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Central OK.
