PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I just wanted to take a minute to update everyone on the Indoor specialty. We are working on a new site at the Westchester Hilton in Rye Brook, NY. It s just on the other side of the Tappan Zee Bridge off Route 287. Anne Marie and I went to see the facility a few weeks ago and had a very positive meeting with the hotel and members of the new cluster. The cluster will be called the Winter Garden Specialties. It will be three days of specialties for Irish Setters with Long Island again having theirs on Friday and Saturday. We will maintain our date of Sunday, February 9, Other breed clubs joining will include Gordon & English Setters, Dachshunds, Saluki s, GSPs, & Vizslas. To help defray the costs of the facility we will have obedience sponsored by EISA on Friday in the main ballroom after breed and the Gordon s will have obedience in a lower ballroom all day Saturday. It should be a very impressive obedience event. All the revenues from obedience will go back to the cluster. Each club is responsible for supplying stewards for the event so if you can please help with obedience let us know. You don t have to have experience! I think everyone will be pleased with the facilities and it is in keeping with our tradition of offering a first class show. A few changes from previous years will include premium crating space. This is to help offset the cost of the facility. There will be free space available as well, but you might have to walk a little further. There will also be premium grooming rooms to rent that are a good size. The electric charge is basically un- changed in cost. Dogs will be allowed to remain in the main ballroom overnight and 2 dogs are allowed per room. We are getting a special room rate of $149 per night including 2 breakfasts per room. Another bonus is that unloading will not require going up an icy ramp! There will be an indoor potty area similar to what was available in Secaucus. We are hoping that we can make this work for years to come, so please help by being considerate of the hotel/grounds and making sure others are as well. Hope to see everyone at the Holiday party this year! - Lynn 3

EISA Field Trial The trial grounds began filling Friday afternoon. Sandy Jones, the field trial secretary, a member of Potomac Irish Setter Club, set up the judge s books and posted the running order. AKC paperwork is never ending. After tying out his horses and dogs, Kevin Culver organized the barn, set up the wrangler s space, and readied the quail and bird bags. Then it was time for Jean and Kevin Culver to go out and mark the courses and check the grounds. It takes a lot of work to put on a Field Trial! By Friday night things were almost ready. A quick meal and then it was time to fall into bed. 5 AM comes quickly! The predicted weather was perfect, sunny and cool with a nice breeze. 6AM Saturday morning found Lynne Godshall unloading the food and cooking implements Mariette O Malley had purchased and packed. It was time to begin setting up the kitchen and making breakfast. The role of field trial chef is hard work when hungry handlers are waiting for their grub. Lynne rose to the task and with the help of Sue Kwiatkowski appetites were satiated. Of course, once breakfast was served it was time for lunch to begin. First brace was on the starting line at 6:45. Jerry Threadgill, (another Potomac Irish Setter member), served as lineman as yours truly acted as chairperson and drove the dog wagon. Sandy Fisher was the tireless bird planter. Horses were rented so visitors could ride in the gallery and enjoy the synchronicity of judges, handlers, horses and dogs in action. Everyone involved in the trial worked a hard, dirty, 12-hour day. Finally, exhausted dogs were fed, horses tied out for the night and everyone adjourned to ROMA s Italian Restaurant for the Judge s Dinner. The banquet room was filled. Judges were thanked and Kevin Culver presented the day s awards. Too soon it was time to go back to the Best Western, walk dogs and fall into bed. Alarm clocks were set for 4:30 or 5AM. Day Two mimicked Day One. On the starting line at 6:45AM and the last brace returned early at 6:00PM. Then there was clean up. The Culvers and helpers worked endlessly to make sure the barn, the grounds and the clubhouse were left in pristine condition so that EISA would have their deposit returned. All in all it was a lot of hard work, but far outweighed by the fun, friendship, kindnesses and pure joy of watching Irish Setters and other hunting dogs do what they were born to do. This is an event that truly illustrates the Beauty, Brains and Bird Sense that is the essence of our breed. 4

Setter Tails My Merlin, a true tail It seems like everyone has had an Irish Setter named Merlin at one time or another. My Merlin was my first setter that wasn t a family dog; he was all mine. I had just finished reading The Crystal Cave and so, of course, I named him Bryn Myrddin after King Arthur s famous magician s hill and cave. His call name was Merlin. He was my friend, my sidekick, my nemesis and he saved my life, twice. Now I would never say he was a perfect dog. Once I left him in my little Datsun pickup truck to run into K Mart for just five minutes. When I returned I couldn t see my dog. The entire cab was full of little pieces of yellow foam. He d made great use of my five-minute absence and from the smile on his face he d had a great time. The truck s seats were no more. He was adept at chewing down the carcasses of deer during hunting season. He would find where some poor hunter had hung their deer, chew it off the ropes and drag it home, a whole deer! We ate a lot of venison. Yes, when he was bad he was very, very bad, but as you will see, when he was good he was very, very good. He heeled to my horse s front left hoof, never left my side, comforted me when I was sad and made me laugh in so many ways. I have wonderful memories of my Merlin. I was attending Johns Hopkins University in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. Baltimore was a dangerous place in my college days. Students were frequently attacked on campus and the surrounding areas. As a result, the university encouraged students to bring well- trained dogs to class so they could safely get to their cars in the late afternoon and evening. Well, Merl the Pearl wasn t too obedient but it seemed that statistics put both of us in a coma and he was happy to snooze through class with me. One hot evening in September we were driving home from class. It was getting dark and the windows were halfway down to let in a little breeze. Merlin was curled up sleeping on the passenger seat. Heading down Howard Street we stopped for a red light. Suddenly, a filthy arm reached in the passenger window trying to open the door. The man that belonged to the arm hadn t seen Merlin when he reached in and tried to open the lock but boy did he know he was there when my big red dog buried his teeth in that guy s arm. The assailant dropped his knife and began to scream. The louder he screamed the more Merl shook that bloody arm. The crook couldn t get his arm out of my dog s mouth or out of the window. Then, the traffic light changed to green. Frantically, I looked for a cop or some kind of help-no dice. The cars behind me began to honk their horns to let me know the light was green-just in case I hadn t noticed. The man was screaming bloody murder, flecks of blood were messing up my truck and my dog 11

was biting and growling at the same time. My cassette player started playing Queen, Another One Bites the Dust. What else could I do, I started driving. The thief was running as fast as he could alongside my truck bawling and Merlin still wouldn t let go. I knew something would soon change cause the speed limit was 30 mph and, well, who could keep up that pace with one arm stuck inside a window in a dog s mouth? Finally, Merlin released the shredded arm and I left the guy in the dust. I had to clean my car a couple of times, what a mess. Ripped cloth, blood, skin and drool were everywhere. Thankfully, the seats were plastic. I have to admit I was worried that my red guy would get sick from biting that grimy arm, but he was fine. I m quite sure my dog saved my life that night. He ate steak for a week. From then on I kept my windows up no matter how hot it was. Two years later he saved my life again. But, that was My Merlin. DO YOU HAVE A TALE TO TELL ABOUT ONE OF YOUR SETTERS? SEND IT TO THE EDITOR FOR PUBLICATION! Report from the New Jersey Dog Federation The NJ Dog Federation sees a strong need for establishing Responsible Pet Ownership committees in towns throughout the state. These committees are a, "go to source," for educating legislators on various canine issues. Many communities already have exorbitant fees for registering dogs that are labeled potentially dangerous. NJ State law allows fees to be set from $ to $ per year The Pure Breed Referral & Rescue Service has no Irish Setter listing. The listing application is on NJDF's website, (federationofdogclubs.org). It was good to see the AKC letter criticizing PETA's practice of euthanizing 99% of dogs in its shelters being published in NJDF's Newsletter. There was also an article reminding breeders to keep an eye and ear opened for canine issues in the community in which they live in order to protest bad canine legislative proposals. Don't wait until a law is passed. Respectfully submitted Susan Kwiatkowski 12

WHY OBEDIENCE Susan Kwiatkowski As I was driving to an obedience session, I started to reflect on the last Touch of Blarney s obedience article and it started me thinking about the beginnings of teaching the recall. I was talking with one breeder about the dogs that escape and don t have a recall. She said she uses an imprinting technique with a litter. Puppies love the crinkly sound that an empty water bottle makes and the pups will follow her wherever she goes. Another breeder uses her whistle to call the litter. I used a field whistle before any puppies climbed out of the whelping box. They all came running and looked up and of course I gave them lots of praise and attention. The bitch I kept came happily every time she heard that sound and I was able to redirect her in the field when she turned to look at me in response to the whistle. I m sure others have their unique way of gathering a litter they are raising too. Now what happens when the puppies leave the nest for their forever home? They are usually between 8 to 16 weeks old. First, they have to acclimate to their new surroundings and a new pack leader. Then, they get used to their new toys. The new pack leader can teach the puppy to retrieve the toys by tossing them and always encouraging the puppy to come back, making a big fuss when they do return with the toy. This is just play and it sets the tone for more serious training when the pups are older. Once the puppy is play retrieving, I like to escalate the game to Hide & Seek. I toss a toy and the puppy runs to get it. While the pup is running to the toy, I hide and when the puppy turns to come back, they start trying to find me. At first I step out from the hiding place quickly and they come running. As they get used to this game, I throw the toy farther and let then seek and search for me for longer periods. To avoid frustrating them I decide to give them a hint and call out if it is taking them too long to find me. I eventually wait long enough so that the dog begins to use its scenting ability. This is just about play but it all has benefits for formal training at a later stage. All this happens in the home environment and builds confidence and security in the dog. It is the beginning of bonding. It doesn t take hours and it s fun for both the dog and handler. It is rudimentary obedience and the games are the building blocks that can be used around the breed ring, in the obedience ring and certainly in the field. We owe our dogs the time and effort to build a lasting relationship considering all the joy they so often bring into our lives. 14

Ready, Steady, Go/OK. Agility: Part Two By Lynne Godshall Every race I was ever entered in or watched has had a built in 3 beat count. Take Your Mark. This is the physical stepping to the line to begin an athletic event. In agility it means sitting behind the first agility obstacle. This is the Start Line. Get Set signals the preparation of the mind and muscles for an explosion, a Break A Way. Muscles contract and tighten. Go or OK is the explosion. This 3 beat sequence is the 1st thing I teach after Name Game and Place. Ready: Lady looks at me. Steady: I look at the first obstacle and go out to where I want to start. I set. Go/ok : She takes off and we run our course. Lady has never broken a Start Line; if she has it was my mistake. The reason she hasn t broken the start line is because I reward the Release. Did you hear what I just said? I reward the Release, Not the Stay. If you reward the release you are not making corrections for a bad stay, thereby not harping on it. The dog learns to wait for the Golden Word- it comes from you, The Team Leader; let the Games begin. This can be analogized to a teachable moment in school or at home.. When a child answers a question incorrectly a good teacher says good try They don t embarrass or yell at the student for an incorrect answer. However when that child answers correctly the teacher throws a party. The child strives to be correct without fear of failure. The Release behavior is also used at the Contacts like the A Frame or Dog Walk and Table. Lady must wait for the Release. Getting control at the contacts gives me the time to reposition, breath and reorganize. I can reset the line, change sides, collect and go. On contacts the dog s job is to run to the end and stop. This is taught as a back chain, so we teach the stop first. This is the obedience component of agility. The Release comes and she is rewarded with food, a target or a game of tug, something coming from me, that won t inducing her prey drive. However, there are times in agility where we want the dog to go fast, without needing a release. Unlike contacts, the weaves, jumps and tunnels are where I reward drive by throwing the toy or target a distance away from me. This encourages speed and independence. Now that's a story worth waiting for! 15

Soon board members were gathered around the pups chatting and updating one another on their summer adventures. At 9:30 the day s schedule began with an EISA Board Meeting. As the board meeting came to a close other EISA members trickled in to begin the FUN part of the day. Luncheon was to die for. Fried Chicken, Maryland Crab cakes, salad, cake and fruit were just a few of the delicacies served. After lunch Patty Elliott conducted Canine Good Citizen tests. All three of the dogs tested passed. Amazing, since they had to take the test while EISA members celebrated Lady and Lynne Godshall s attainment of the prized MACH I with lots of cake. Dogs and their trainers practiced agility and UDX skills in the air-conditioned building while other club members braved the heat and admired their dog s birdiness as they found quail in spite of the heat and lack of a breeze All in all a FUN DAY was had by all.
