November meeting, (+Board) refreshments by Mary November 13 December meeting, CHRISTMAS PARTY, refreshments tba December 11 New York is 3 hours ahead of California, but that doesn t make California slow. Someone became a CEO at 25, and died at 50. Another someone became a CEO at 50, and lived to 90. Someone is still single, while someone else got married. Obama retired at 55, and Trump started at 70. Everyone in this world works based on his time zone. People around you might seem to be ahead of you, and some might seem behind. Everyone is running his own race, in his own time. Do not envy, nor should you mock. Life is about waiting for the right moment to act. So, relax. You re not late. You re not early. You re very much on time

CLEVELAND SHETLAND SHEEPDOG CLUB GENERAL MEETING Notes from the meeting which took place October 9, 2018 President s Report President Barb called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. Members present besides Barb were Sue Moreland, Betty Hitzler, John Bush, Kristie Mariner, Steve Mariner, Suzanne Stachurski, Mary Thrall, Chris Cammarn, Rhadine Zabrecky and Laura Chegan. Judy Keller and Pixel were our guests. Barb expressed a grateful THANK YOU to all members who worked, showed and supported our first independent specialty. It was well done and we had lots of favorable comments. Tonight we ll re-cap before we forget. THANK YOU and on to 2019, which will feature the addition of Rally and 4 6 month puppy class! Recording Secretary s Report John moved and Kristie seconded that the minutes of the last meeting be approved as they were published in the September edition of the Spotlight. Motion carried. Report of the Board N/A Corresponding Secretary s Report N/A Report of the Treasurer As always, a complete financial report will be made available to any member upon request. Reports of the Committees Nominating -- Since nominations were amended and closed at the last meeting, Secretary Sue cast a unanimous ballot in favor of the slate of officers put forth by the Nominating Committee: Barb Kaplan, President, Laura Chegan, Vice-President, Kristie Mariner, Recording Secretary, Sue Moreland, Corresponding Secretary and Rhadine Zabrecky, Treasurer, are thus duly elected on this date 10/09/2018 and will serve until the election in October of Congratulations and thank you for your service. Specialty see next page Unfinished Business Barb called an emergency board meeting for immediately following tonight s general meeting. The topic of a Cheryl Anderson seminar is tabled for now, but may be revisited in the future. New Business N/A BRAGS Suzi bragged: I SURVIVED!!!! Mary s dog Tobey was Best Opposite Sat. a.m., Select Dog Sat. p.m. and Select Dog on Sunday! Kim s dog Iconic was WD twice on Saturday! Cheryl s girl Minimo was WB on Saturday afternoon! There being no further business, Steve moved and Kristie seconded that the meeting be adjourned at 8:06 p.m. Special Board Meeting: Due to the extra-busy time this year in getting ready for our specialties, the board voted unanimously to skip the audit this year. Next year s audit will be for a two-year period

SPECIALTY RE-CAP REPORT 2018 Suzi began the discussion/report of our first independent specialties by commenting that it was the most STRESSFUL thing she s ever put herself through! Nevertheless, she certainly did a FANTASTIC job and it was a weekend to be proud of. Next year (2019) Suzi is going to step down from being Show Secretary because she wants to show her own dogs, and Barb K will take over the Secretary job. There are a couple of things that we will want to change next year in order to continue to improve and increase our entries: SOFTWARE Barb mentioned that we will need the Program for Dog Shows software registered to us. Sue moved that we purchase this software; John seconded. Barb will do the research on what exactly is needed and will report back to us at the November meeting. There is also a webinar (AKC?) for clubs on the topic of How to Put on a Dog Show. Steve will preview it for us and report back in November. PREMIUM LIST It was agreed that we need hard copies of the premium list sent out and that it should be sooner. Sue will create a mailing list; Kim may know where we can purchase such a list. Kim is going to find out why Infodog messed up concerning getting our specialties onto their website. Steve will set up a PayPal account on our website if we wish. RALLY In 2019, we will also offer Rally. Sue will get the ball rolling with the applications for next year, making sure that Rally is included in the filing. Suzi is already working on the letter to Fulton County Kennel Club asking for permission again to hold our specialties the same weekend as their all-breed shows. We also would like to add 4 6 month puppy classes. MATS AND TARPS Worked out really well. As we grow, we will need another tarp to protect the floors. Suzi would like to add runners on top of the tarps to absorb those chalky little pawprints! Hopefully we can keep the puppy room for lunch tables, etc. It was nice to be able to sit down and have lunch all together! This year we filled 3 tables for lunch (full); if our entry increases the number of tables will have to increase as well. SIGNAGE OUTSIDE Some exhibitors had a tough time finding the site. Suzi and Ray are going to revamp the CABTC sign and add a big DOG SHOW sign. Ideally, dog show signs could be used at all the turns leading down to the site. TIMELINE We need a timeline of deadlines presented in checklist form. These deadlines include Application to hold Specialties, Premium List, Judging Program and Catalog. We also need incident report forms for insurance purposes. Sue will work on this checklist. JUDGES It was decided that we will re-invite our two sweepstakes judges since there was only one entry. The judge selection committee is going to ask John Buddie, Jennie Tomlin- Hynes and Debbie Wyman if they would judge next year s specialties. CLEAN-UP John Bush, we owe you BIG TIME and you say you ll do it again????? Hugs! We must remind exhibitors NOT to potty their dogs on the neighbors grass areas

NEVER FEED THESE FOODS TO YOUR DOG AT THANKSGIVING! The good food and good company that come along with Thanksgiving are nearly upon us, and the four-legged members of your family are looking forward to it, too. But some of the holiday treats you look forward to eating on Turkey Day can be awful for your dog and in some cases, they re dangerous. Here are 10 foods you shouldn t share with your dog on Thanksgiving or any other day, for that matter according to the Prince William County, Va. Animal Shelter: 1. BONES It might seem counterintuitive, but bones are bad for your dog. Carmela Stamper, DVM, of the FDA s Center for Veterinary Medicine says giving your dog a bone, no matter what the size, can mean a trip to the vet, and even possible surgery or death. She recommends making sure you throw out bones from your own meals so your dog can t get to them. 2. RAW OR UNCOOKED TURKEY This is an obvious one. The threat of salmonella in uncooked turkey is terrible for your dog s stomach (and yours, of course). 3. TURKEY SKIN You may love the turkey skin and gravy but fatty foods like those are tough for your dog to digest. In fact, your dog s pancreas can become inflamed, resulting in pancreatitis. 4. DOUGH OR CAKE BATTER Raw dough plus your dog s body heat can actually make the dough rise in its stomach. That can cause your dog to vomit, while at the same time suffering abdominal pain and bloating. Plus, the batter you use for those cakes and cookies contains raw eggs, which could contain salmonella bacteria. Make sure to clean up any scraps or droppings that hit the floor right away. 5. BEER Keep the cold ones to yourself. Some dogs might love beer, but it can really mess with their stomach. And if the dog has too much, it can cause a fever, rapid heartbeat, seizures, liver damage, or even death. 6. MACADAMIA NUTS They re very bad for dogs, and can cause a reaction called macadamia nut toxicosis. Symptoms can range from lethargy to vomiting to your dog being unable to stand up. 7. MUSHROOMS Fungi are good for you, but very bad for your dog. If your dog eats mushrooms, the dog may experience vomiting, seizures, or even coma and possibly death. 8. ONIONS AND GARLIC Your dog can get very sick from eating onions or garlic, because they contain sulfides which are toxic to dogs and can cause destruction of red blood cells, leading to anemia

9. SAGE Sage is in countless Thanksgiving Day recipes, but it shouldn t be in your dog s bowl. Sage contains oils and resins that can upset your four-legged friend s stomach and do a number on its central nervous system. 10. NUTMEG Pumpkin and sweet potatoes are good for your dog but make sure they don t contain nutmeg. It has mild hallucinogenic properties that, when ingested by your dog, can cause seizures, tremors and central nervous system problems. BONUS NO-NO: CHOCOLATE. Most dog owners know this golden rule. Never, ever feed your dog chocolate. It s toxic for them. Make sure to have plenty of dog food and treats available to offer your dog as an alternative to the things they shouldn t be eating. And if you re hosting dinner, tell your guests not to feed your dog any table food (because they might not know otherwise). And when you go out for that postturkey feast walk, take your dog with you! - 8 -
