This Thursday will be our first Membership Meeting of the new year and "Baby, it's cold outside"! So with that in mind...feel free to come gather with your favorite casserole or anything in a crockpot! Bring your favorite casserole or that new recipe you've been meaning to try, we won't judge you! The Club will provide a salad, so we are relying on the members to fill in here! Gathering begins at 6:30 and the meeting's at 7:00. Please Margie at mcwunderle@yahoo.com with what you'll be bringing and invite someone you've not seen in a bit. 2 From the President Happy New Year! I m one those people who likes to take a moment this time of year to reflect on the past 12 months the good and the not so good. When I think of CABTC during the past year, there s a lot that we accomplished and much to be grateful for. Some of us have brought puppies into our homes and a few have added newborns to their clan. We ve achieved new titles, tried a new dog sport, volunteered, recruited, trained, and trained, and trained. We ve built up our Rally program, introduced Scent Work, conducted several top-notch seminars, added creative new classes, moved our agility venue (twice), scouted possible new club venues, and made the building a comfortable, four-season training facility. Sadly, we have suffered serious illnesses and loss within our CABTC family. For the members and friends who have passed, let s keep our memories alive. Let s also show support and encouragement to those who are battling or recovering from an illness. I wish you a safe and heathy year with many happy moments with your fellow club members and furry friends. Brad Smedley Come join our NEW CABTC Agility Facebook Group! We talk about all things agility - including recent challenges at trials that had you proud of getting through them, what car to get for all those Shelties, what snacks to bring, where to meet up for a beer after a trial, your dog's favorite obstacle and more. Read the rules (which basically say to be nice and don't try to sell anything), then answer ALL 3 questions and ask to join - we do have to approve you. It's okay if you aren't a member, if you live in Europe or if you don't show in AKC. We just want to share our love for the sport and help support one another. 3 Bragging Rights Congratulations to our members and their dogs on these recent accomplishments! Cheryl Sacerich writes: After the thanksgiving holiday, we had a fun weekend herding at Keepstone Farm VA. Guess what we herded - TURKEYS!! Claire Apple raised turkeys to use at the AHBA trials during the year. It was an interesting experience, because we have been working only call ducks for a while - which are shorter, much slower, and need constant pressure to keep going in the right direction. The turkeys were much faster and they can get slightly airborne can you guess how we know? Mora, my experienced dog, was a little excited and she thought they needed to fly! MiniMo (the youngster) did a much nicer job because I could walk the course with them, and she was able to pen them and also hold them still in the center of the arena. Mora also competed in ranch and arena sheep, and got placements in both earning her the final points to finish her AHBA Herding Trial Champion. She joins just a handful of shelties that have completed the triple championship in herding from the 3 venues of AKC, AHBA and ASCA. Her sister and her father are also in that elite group and it looks like she has passed on those genes to her daughter Minimo. 7 ATTENTION ALL CABTC MEMBERS PLEASE SUPPORT THE CABTC 2019 JUNE STAND ALONE RALLY TRIALS The members and friends sponsored prizes donated for our Fall Obedience and Rally Trials have been a great success. THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR GENEROUS DONORS!! Usually the Obedience and Rally Trial Committee only asks CABTC members and friends to sponsor prizes once a year for our Fall Trials. This year we want to make our inaugural June Stand Alone Rally Trials a huge success. We would like to sell out these trials and hope that the chance to win a cash award will increase our entries. For that reason we are asking CABTC members and friends to consider making a donation for the June 2019 Rally trials. The minimum donation is only $ The goal is to have lots of awards at $10.00 so that many Rally teams can go home with an award. We ask that CABTC members support their breed by offering a $10.00 prize for their breed in any of the Rally Classes. Attached to this month s Loose Leads is a form that should be completed and returned to Betsy Kapp along with your check. Her address is on the form. If we have multiple donors for the same award, the prizes will be combined. All donations become the property of Cleveland All-Breed Training Club. Only cash will be awarded. Each trial will have a Rally High Triple Combined Award for handlers competing in the Rally Master, Rally Excellent B and Rally Advanced B classes and a High Combined Award for handlers competing in both the Rally Advanced B and Rally Excellent B classes. These awards have been well received award at our Rally Trials the past few years. It s possible a handler will complete their RACH at this trial as well which would be exciting. Thank you again to our members who have so generously funded these awards. It is a great tradition and your support is much appreciated. The goal remains to make our June Rally Trials enjoyable for all of our exhibitors and that might include you!!!

10 Delegate s Corner Submitted by our very own AKC delegate, Maureen Setter What drives up AKC entries? The answer is Titles, Awards & Recognition. Rally entries are on the increase because of new Rally titles and the RACH program. As of Jan 1 of this year, a club may be approved to hold an unlimited number of rally events in a calendar year. Changes to the RACH title were approved and will be backdated to Nov 1, 2017 which was the beginning of the Master level class & RACH title. Five Tracking Recommendations were submitted to the Board & will again be discussed at the Feb Board meeting. If approved will become effective April 1, They are: 1) Allowing a Tracking Test Secretary to enter their test; 2) Tracking Certification valid from 12 months to 24 months; 3) A person that has put a TDX or VST title on a dog within the past five (5) years to perform Tracking Certifications; 4) Allow dogs with physical challenges (including amputees) to participate; 5) Clarifying combined test limitations The OTCH title was established in July The AKC Companion events staff has presented to the AKC Board 3 incentives to retain teams competing at the OTCH level: 1) Adjust the Open B Point schedule for the number of dogs competing (schedule last adjusted in 2000). 2) earn one point for a score of 195 or better when they do not earn points from the top 4 placements in Open B or Utility B; 3) OTCH#, that is recognizing the number of times a dog has achieved the OTCH title. Changes have been made in to Obedience Open Class Stay Get Your Leash Exercise. Instead of a 2-part exercise, it is now a 1-part. AKC 2019 Agility Advisory Committee met in November to discuss some 3,000 recommendations and comments. Final recommendations should go to the Board in April. Implementation could be broken up into several parts depending of timing for implementation (IT time) and needs of the sport. Over 30,000 Achiever Dog Certificates have been issued. Is your dog one of them? AKC Board is reviewing offering a Temperament Test which will be open to all breeds including mixed breeds. The AKC says while the CGC test assesses trained behaviors related to the dog s manners, the AKC Temperament Test will access the dog s reactions to stimuli in the world. These stimuli will be in the following 5 categories: social, auditory, visual, touch & motion. It will be a pass/fail test given by a CGC evaluator. To earn the ATT title, a dog must pass the test twice and be at least 1 year of age. To be further discussed at the Feb Board meeting. The AKC Family Dog department encourages clubs to become an AKC FIT DOG Club. The requirements for becoming a AKC FIT DOG CLUB are: 1) conduct at least 4 walks a year; 2) regularly schedule canine fitness programs/conditioning classes; 3) submit a fitness plan to the AKC. Dog owners that meet their specific fitness requirements for their dog can get a free car magnet and the club can receive a free AKC FIT DOG banner. BTW, AKC is offering this program to independent dog training schools too (such as Petsmart). Reminds me of years ago when club members would get together for walks in the Metroparks and today s Meet-Ups. For our Dock Diving dogs, the AKC is very pleased with their NADD/AKC relationship and see it continuing long into the future saw NADD offered by 46 different clusters.

11 After years of planning, the AKC Museum of the Dog returns to NYC. Grand opening will be on Feb 8 th, just steps away from Grand Central Station. The Museum was founded in NYC in In 1987 the Museum moved to St Louis. Now, 32 years later, the Museum is back in NYC at 101 Park Ave. PLUS, The AKC is looking into forming a relationship with the UPDOG folks like they have with NADD, Barn Hunt, etc. UPDOG is getting to be a very popular activity. In closing, don t forget to check out AKC.TV and be sure to let our new students know about it. 1.3 million have watched AKC.TV. As of May 1, over Maureen Setter, Delegate of the American Kennel Club OBEDIENCE RUN-THRUs Obedience Run-Thrus are the 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of the month. Sign up starts at 6 pm & ends at 7 pm, except Beg. Novice sign up, which ends at 6:30 pm. There are 3 rings (Novice, Open, Utility) with Beginner Novice running from 6:30 to 7 pm in the Novice ring. If there are no Beginner Novice dogs signed up by 6:30 pm then Novice will start at 6:30 pm. Novice sits and downs are at approximately 7:15 pm. If weather is bad, call the building by 5:30pm (216) to make sure that classes are being held.
