CNC is incorporated as a Maryland company Need to have someone to volunteer to be the Principal Office. Jim Wasson, Don Sharkey and Kathy Paxton have volunteered. JW will be the principal office for CNC. JW will do the paperwork. JW reported that the cost of liability policy for CNR is increasing. That may be the same for CNC. JW is working with our agent to look for other options, and will report back. DS reported that 98% of the cost of the trophies are covered. The bill from Prairie Dog Pottery will be $ if we pay in 30 days; or $1850 if we pay at delivery. DS asked for approval to pre-pay for the trophies. RM made a motion to pre-pay the bill for the trophies for the Regional Specialty and Supported Entries. KH seconded the motion. No objections; motion passed. Old Business: Still working on Summary Page for 2016 Annual Treasurer s report. Working on some undocumented items. New Business: Dissolve Nominating Committee (Ad Hoc) PK made a motion to dissolve the Nominating Committee; seconded by BMK. No objections; motion passed. We discussed CNR (Colonial Newf Rescue). DG recommended asking them to send us an update to include finances, and what dogs are in Rescue. Their board meets quarterly. Question is it a requirement that one CNC board member be on the CNR board? We will continue the discussion at our August meeting. DS reported that the NCA National will be in Michigan in 2019 and Due to a lack of volunteers at the last National, NCA is going to ask all the regional clubs to be responsible for certain committees. DG suggested CNC volunteer for the grounds committee to support DS who is the grounds chairman for We will continue the discussion at our August meeting.

7 Shelters at the water test were discussed. The pavilion would be good for hospitality and the brown bag auction. We need tents for the secretaries and the judges. Insurance Jim Wasson CNC s liability insurance rates may be increasing due to our current Insurance carrier exiting this type of insurance coverage for dog clubs. JW reported that CNR s insurance will cost $1663; they are in the 8 bargaining stage. JW joined the meeting and reported that our current policy ends in two months. He will keep us up to date. Marylou Zimmerman (NCA TRAC) stated that the NCA uses Strip.com for various fee payments (Dues, Donation, etc...), Mary Price says that the Strip reports are better than PayPal. Both PayPal and Strip charge the same fees (2.9% plus $.30 per transaction). The Draft Test could also use the on-line platform ( ) for the Online Working Dog Test Entry System. Dan Zimmerman could then link Entry System for CNC Draft Test to the Strip payment account for CNC. We will ask Donna to give a report on how it worked after the test. CB will need to set up the Strip account. How can the club do this? KP advised to wait until something comes from NCA to see what they are asking. Since most people know if they are going by January, we can ask Margaret to do a broadcast memo to ask who is going to the National. CNR was discussed. KP will send a copy of their by-laws to everyone on the CNC board. They should meet four times a year, and send a report to CNC after each meeting. Two dogs are permanently in Rescue. CNC would like a monthly report from CNR. We would like to know what dogs are in and out of rescue, and to see a copy of the minutes of any meeting (to include a Treasurer s report). We have not seen a Treasurer s report from CNR for over one year. CB will send a letter to CNR. First, he will send it to our board and needs input from everyone. CNC and CNR should be working closely together. According to the CNR By-laws, two representatives from the CNC board should attend their meetings. One member of the CNR board should attend the CNC board meetings. This has slipped by this past year; with the upcoming elections, we should start again. National Specialty trophies: National trophy sponsorship is open to regional clubs before the general membership. CNC has always sponsored two trophies. 14 Greetings from the Rescue Crew! We continue to have a busy year. This week alone, we brought in three dogs. Sadly, one of the dogs is 11 years old. These are older Newfs are often overlooked because not many people want to adopt an oldie. We are thankful to the members that help foster and adopt the senior Newfs. We know they will bring much joy to their fosters and adopters in their last years. If you have it in your heart to take in a senior Newf, please let us know. NEW SPONSOR PROGRAM! We still have two long-term Newfs in Rescue. One is a four-year-old male that has many orthopedic issues. He is on prescription food, supplements, pain medicine, and regularly participates swim therapy. His care is very expensive. Our other long-term Newf is a two-yearold male, who has been in several homes already, and he seems to be too much for most people. According to our professional trainer, he is trainable but it will take time. Both of these dogs are up for adoption but will need that special person to love them and treat them well. To help cover their ongoing care, we set up a new sponsorship program for both of these long-term Rescues. Please log onto our website and click on Available Rescues. LEESBURG CHRISTMAS PARADE: Colonial Newfoundland Rescue will be participating again in the Leesburg, VA Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 8th. Last year, despite the snow, we had a good turnout. We hope everyone will come again and hope others will join us too. Your Newf does not have to be a former Rescue to participate. Please come a bit early and park at the end of the parade route. 16 On September 27 about 50 people and about 35 dogs attended the Fall Fun Day at Lake Accotink Park. The weather co-operated with no rain and cooler temperatures. Melanie Hastings (AKC Evaluator) did the AKC tests. Five passed the CGC and two the advanced CGC test. All were thrilled that their dogs did so well. Congratulations to all that passed. FALL FUN DAY Several new members attended and some people who were thinking about getting a Newf. There were lots of dogs for them to see and members graciously answered all their questions. The highlight was two brown newf puppies from the same litter. They were little balls of brown fluff. Lastly, it was time for the door prize drawing. These prizes were generously denoted by Liz McCulley. The winners enjoyed McCormick spices and cookbooks. Mandy Waters gave a talk about the Williamsburg Parade this year and Newfs. 18 2018 CNC WATER TEST CNC held its 22nd Water Test at Lake Marburg in Codorus State Park on August 17th 19th, By the end of this year s three-day event, 10 dog/handler teams tested. With the help of the hard-working stewarding crew, our handler and dog teams tallied the following titles: 2 new Water Dogs, 2 Water Dog Requalification, 2 new Water Rescue Dogs, and 3 Water Rescue Dog Requalification s under the attentive eyes of our experienced judges Sue Marino and Mary Jane Spackman. Included in these qualifications was one new Versatility Newfoundland (VN) title and one Working Achievement (WA) title pending NCA approval. This year the weather at Codorus cooperated with us to earn some time water working titles. We normally are fighting a stiff breeze and white caps, but not this year. NCA mentor-level judges Sue Marino (MA) and Mary Jane Spackman (PA) did a great job as our judges. With so much rain, our normal beach area was underwater so the dogs had to start at the waters edge so extra due diligence was required. On Friday, Donna Foy handled her two dogs Sailor and Emma to WRD requalifying titles. Saturday Alice Harwell s Chelsea and Glenn Lesher s Glory earned Junior Dog titles. Donna Foy s Sailor clinched a second WRD requalifying title again on Saturday. Great job Sailor. On Sunday, and Rob Rogers Drago earned their third WRD requalifying title. Alice and Chelsea went on to earn Chelsea s Senior Water Rescue Dog title and clinched her Versatility Newfoundland Dog title. Donna Foy s Liza earned a Junior Dog title. Congratulations to handler and dog teams. Even those who didn t qualify for either WD, WRD, or WRDX titles, the handler and dog teams gave their best efforts and looked to be on track for qualifying later in the season. 21 5 TOXINS TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS FALL As autumn approaches, so do new potential dangers that pose a threat to your dog and cat. Here are the top 5 fall toxins to be on the lookout for as summer ends. Keep your pet safe by keeping these out of reach! 1. Rodenticides As the weather gets colder, mice and rats start seeking shelter in warm locations, in other words, your house! Unfortunately, the start of autumn means the start of mouse and rat poisoning. There are several types of active ingredients in these mouse and rat poisons, and they all work (and kill) in different ways. Depending on what type of mouse and rat poison was ingested, clinical signs include: Weakness Lethargy Difficulty breathing Coughing blood Dehydration Inappetance Profuse vomiting A distended stomach Tremors Seizures Kidney failure Even death 2. Chocolate Did someone mention Halloween? The last week of October poses a big danger to dogs, as there s a greater likelihood that your dog will find the candy stash. While one or two small Snickers bars aren t usually dangerous, significant ingestions (e.g., your whole candy bowl) can result in chocolate poisoning in dogs. [To be on the safe side I don t recommend feeding chocolate of any kind to your pet]. The toxic ingredient: methylxanthines (called theobromine) and caffeine. With mild poisoning, clinical signs of chocolate poisoning include: Agitation Panting Vomiting Diarrhea With more significant ingestions, clinical signs of cardiac effects (including a racing heart rate, high blood pressure, and abnormal heart rhythm) or pancreatitis (i.e., inflammation of the pancreas) may be seen. With severe poisonings, chocolate can result in tremors, seizures, and, rarely, death. Keep in mind that with chocolate, the darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more dangerous it is! Semi-sweet chocolate or Baker s Chocolate contains very toxic amounts of theobromine as compared to milk chocolate or white chocolate. Learn more about Halloween candy basket dangers here. 3. Compost/Mulch Piles I m all for going green, and am a huge advocate of recycling and composting. However, before you start composting, make sure you have a well secured, fenced off compost pile. If wildlife or your dog ingests the compost directly, it can result in severe poisoning secondary to the mold (containing tremorgenic mycotoxins). Clinical signs of compost poisoning include: 21 Drooling Vomiting Inappetance Panting Agitation Incoordination Tremors Seizures 4. Mushrooms While the majority of mushrooms are benign and only result in minor symptoms when ingested, there are a few types that can be deadly (even to humans!) when ingested. Because mushroom identification is so difficult, we veterinarians have to err on the side of caution and assume any mushroom ingested by a pet is toxic. The most dangerous type? The Amanita mushroom. Depending on the type of mushroom ingested, clinical signs include: Gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain) Neurologic signs (e.g., walking drunk, tremoring, agitation, seizures) Organ damage (e.g., liver or kidney failure) Even death 5. Mothballs As mice and rats come into the house to stay warm, so do moths! Mothballs may look benign, but can be quite dangerous as they typically contain chemicals such as paradichlorobenzene or naphthalene. The classic smell of mothballs is typically due to old-fashioned mothballs that contain naphtha-

22 lene, and these are generally much more toxic than the paradichlorobenzene-containing ones. Clinical signs from mothball poisoning in dogs and cats include: Gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, abdominal pain) Neurologic signs (e.g., lethargy, tremors, etc.) Blood changes (e.g., abnormalities in the red blood cells) And rarely, even organ failure When in doubt, if you think your pet was poisoned, call your veterinarian, emergency veterinarian, or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center for life-saving care. Lee, DVM, DACVECC CARING FOR YOUR OLDER NEWFOUNDLAND DOG So the inevitable has happened, a day you have dreaded for years, your Newfie has somehow become old! What happens now, does anything change, should I take him or her to the vet more often? If you re anything like me you have a lot of questions. The average life span for a Newfoundland is 8-10 years. But a whole lot of Newfies are living into their teens, which is fantastic! Most veterinarians consider a 7-year-old Newfie a senior. They will want to do a routine checkup and blood work, often called a senior panel, to establish what the normal values are for your Newf. Your dog has most likely already had blood work done by the age of 7 so it s just a matter of making sure everything remains normal. Some veterinarians will want to see your Newfie every 6 months for a checkup, some will also want to do blood work every 6 months. As your Newfie ages it s important for your veterinarian to see him or her more often. Dogs age much faster than humans and giant breeds age even faster than other smaller breeds. Problems can arise quickly and if your vet sees your dog more often, he or she can hopefully treat a problem while it s still in the beginning stages instead of having to deliver a possible poor prognosis about your beloved Newf. Let s discuss some common ailments that your older Newfie may acquire. Every week while grooming your Newf you should be feeling for any abnormal lumps, bumps, skin changes, heat or swelling. I remember when I first felt a lump on my Newfie, I panicked and got her into the vet right away. It was a lipoma, a simple non-cancerous fatty tumor. A lot of dogs get these (skinny or overweight, happens to both). Your vet will use a needle to aspirate the lump and look at the cells under the microscope. Most lipomas are harmless and do not need to be removed unless they get large or interfere with movement. If your dog has a lipoma you do need to keep an eye on it for any changes and report them to the vet. Not every lump you may find is a lipoma, it could be something more serious like cancer. So of course, if you find any abnormal lump you should always have the vet check it out. 22 Do you know how to tell if your Newf is in pain? They can be a very stoic breed! One of the most common causes of pain in any dog is arthritis (joint inflammation) which can range from very mild to severe. Most Newfies will develop some form of arthritis as they get older. Maybe your Newf has difficulty getting up or laying down, is limping slightly or just slowing down. These are all signs of possible pain. When examining my Newf for any physical changes I can tell when I get to a sore area, she will close her mouth slightly, or just look the other way. Very subtle signs! Newfoundlands, being giant breed dogs, do not always have the lifespan we would wish for them. Advances in husbandry and veterinary care are helping Newfoundlands to live longer lives all the time. Mild arthritis is easily treated. Your vet may suggest buffered aspirin, gentle massage, and a soft, padded bed. Talk to your vet about dietary supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin that may help keep the joints lubricated. Keeping your Newf at a healthy weight and exercising is important, walking

23 can loosen up stiff joints and it keeps muscles in shape. Swimming is second nature to most Newfies, it s a low impact, easy on the joints exercise. Older Newfs can become tired more easily than their younger counterparts, so take it easy on your older friend! A more severe form of arthritis is Osteoarthritis. It is a degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage in joints is gradually lost. Treatment can involve surgery or medicinal management of any pain. Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAID s, are often used to treat pain and inflammation in dogs. They can have side effects such as liver, kidney and gastrointestinal disease. Your vet will want to do blood tests every 3 to 6 months to make sure any NSAID s being used are not causing problems. Your vet will tell you what kind of outward signs to look for such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and lethargy. Some commonly known NSAID s are Rimadyl, Metacam, Deramaxx and Etodolac. You and your vet will decide which medication will work best for your dog. Injuries are common in older dogs. Maybe they ran too hard the day before or perhaps they simply turned wrong while laying down. Sometimes it doesn t take much to cause an injury in an older animal. A lot of injuries resolve on their own with restricted movement and rest. It s a good idea to see your vet if your Newf seems to have an injury that isn t getting better in a day or two, or in the case of severe pain or injury, call your vet right away. Taking care of an older, injured or handicapped Newfoundland isn t always easy, they are big and heavy and most of the time hard to move! A few suggestions are: A large padded bed is a must for a Newf that cannot get around on its own. You want to prevent bedsores so turning a dog is necessary if they cannot do it on their own. I have a 4-inch-thick orthopedic foam bed that is 36 x54 for my Newf, when it became worn out a bit I bought a queen size foam mattress topper, cut it to size (two pieces) and put the pieces under the actual bed for more support. It is a nice thick comfortable bed that isn t too soft or too firm. In the case of an incontinent dog you can buy piddle pads to place under him or her, or a waterproof mattress pad. I have a waterproof mattress pad that goes around the actual foam bed, and under the bed cover. Any accidents are easily cleaned up by throwing the bed cover and mattress pad into the washer. Bathing and grooming an injured or handicapped Newf is difficult, if not impossible. I have found that trimming the hair to a more manageable length helps immensely with clean up, and also helps regulate body temperature as this is more difficult as they age. Baby wipes work fantastic if you have a Newf that leaks or dribbles urine on him or herself. Moving a Newf that needs help can be tricky. I have a canvas sling that is lined with fleece, it goes around the abdomen and has quick connect buckles attached with nylon 23 and has two nylon handles. This sling has been a lifesaver for me! You can find slings in most pet supply catalogs. I use a collar or harness, and short leash to help my Newf when she is wobbly on her front end. Make sure you offer water to your Newf often if they cannot get to it on their own, they really do drink a lot! To reduce the chance of injury and strain on joints I suggest a ramp for getting in and out of vehicles. I have a ramp instead of stairs for going into the yard as well. Rubber backed rugs are essential on slick surfaces where your Newf might lose its footing and fall. Eyes can become cloudy with nuclear sclerosis, a harmless clouding of the lens. Some Newfs develop cataracts which can be surgically removed. Hearing may start to fail as well. Make sure family and visitors know how to get his or her attention without startling them. Most of us know when something is wrong with our Newfs. We have a feeling or an intuition that tells us to take a closer look. 24 PREPARING YOUR DOG FOR HOLIDAY GUESTS With the holidays coming up, your home is likely to be experiencing more activity and guests. Depending on your dog s personality and habits, this can be a difficult time for both your dog and your family. Planning ahead and doing some simple training with your dog can make this a more pleasant experience for everyone. Training before the holidays- If you haven t taught your dog any basic manners or behaviors, now s the time to start! Even if you re short on time, you can easily work in short training sessions a few times a day and see results quickly. Work the training into your daily life as much as you can, such as training stays while you are cooking in the kitchen, or asking the dog for sits and downs while you re on the couch watching TV. The more you ask for behaviors as part of your routine, the more your dog will develop using them as a regular habit. Some of the behaviors that can be most useful during the holidays are: Sit/Stay Sit (and stay) is an extremely versatile behavior. You can use it to teach the dog not to jump on visitors at the door, to sit and allow people to greet him, to stay in one place comfortably while you move about the house, and much more. Train your dog to sit and stay in the places he s most likely to jump up, such as just inside and outside of the front door, in and out of the car, by your kitchen, living room area, or by the back door. Once your dog is doing well, invite friends and neighbors over to practice his sit/stay so he ll be sitting like a champ when your guests arrive for Thanksgiving dinner! Go to your place This is also a wonderful command for dogs that are more boisterous or bother guests at the dinner table or in the living room. Give your dog a place that is his. Usually we use a dog bed or mat, or you can use crates as I do with my dogs. Bring your dog to the mat, bed or crate and reward him for being there and laying down/going inside; pair it with a word such as place or crate. As with the sit/stay, move up to practicing this one with friends and neighbors so the dog has the behavior solid by the time guests will be arriving. Since you want this to be a good experience for your dog, you can give him a nice treat to chew on while he lies on the bed or in their crate. Examples might include a food stuffed toy, a chew stick or something else that your dog loves and can quietly enjoy. Leave it Leave it is an indispensable behavior during the holidays. Not only can you use it if the dog decides to go for a delectable human treat on the dining room table, you can also use it on things that dogs are attracted to, such as shiny holiday decorations, holiday plants, and wrapped gifts. Leave it can be generalized to anything once you ve taught it with food and can help you to tell the dog to move away from something even if you re at a distance. Another behavior that is often paired with leave it is drop it which basically 24 tells the dog to drop an item in their mouths, which is helpful if the dog has grabbed something before you had a chance to use leave it. Tricks Okay, while this may not seem like an important behavior, tricks can be a great thing to teach your dog because it gives him something to do. If you have guests coming over who may be a bit nervous about your dog, even if he is friendly, tricks can be a great way to break the ice. A dog seems less intimidating when he can shake, high five, spin, roll over or do something equally adorable. If your guests include children, they will most likely be delighted by these behaviors and may even want to teach the dog some themselves, which can be a fun holiday activity (with adult supervision, of course!) Management during the holidays- The second part of an effective set up for your dog during the holidays is good management. Keep your dog comfortable If you know your dog doesn t care for guests, have a crate ready for him in a quiet spot, such as bedroom with a closed door. Alternatively, keep him in a place where he can feel comfortable and not interact with guests, such as a bedroom, laundry room or other area that is closed off with a door or baby gate. Never allow people to interact with your dog if the dog isn t comfortable, as this can increase the anxiety he is feeling. Provide distractions Have a variety of items ready for your dog,

25 to occupy his time, while you visit with your guests. This can include food stuffed toys or puzzles, bones, chews, chew sticks and toys. Always give your dog an item such as this in a safe place and supervise any interaction if children will be visiting. Exercise, exercise, exercise You cannot exercise your dog enough during these busy times. As the saying goes, A good dog is a tired dog. The more physical exercise your dog gets, the less rambunctious when people come to visit, and there s a good chance after greeting guests he ll be more than happy to crawl up on his bed or crate and take a nap. Much to my surprise there were no Newfoundland dogs to be seen in any of the ports visited. There were a few Labrador Retrievers, the other dog breed from this area. When I arrived back in St. Johns, there was a Newfoundland named Gabriel to greet the passengers with his Newfoundland Tartan. He was 8 years old and drooled very little. Of course, all the passengers were making a fuss over him with photo ops. His owner gave out Newfoundland pins. Saturday, December 8th 6:00 pm Leesburg Christmas Parade 2018 Colonial Newfoundland Rescue s 2nd year participating in the Leesburg Christmas Parade Please make sure you park your car at the end of the parade route by Fairfax Street. After the parade starts, nearby roads will be closed and it will be difficult to return to your car if you parked at the starting point of the parade, The Dodd's will be hosting a pre-parade gathering at their home at 225 N. King Street in Leesburg at 4:30 pm. Please stop by for hot chocolate and cookies before the parade. N. King Street closes at 5:30 pm so be sure to drop off people and Newfs at the Dodd's at 225 N. King Street and then drive your car to the parking lot at the end of the route and walk back to the Dodd's house. The parade lineup is about 2 blocks from the Dodd's house. December 8th, :00pm Saturday The parade kicks off at Ida Lee Park and travels south on King Street, ending at the intersection of Fairfax and South King Streets. 3:00pm 5:00pm 5:30pm 6:00pm PARADE SCHEDULE Gates open at Ida Lee for parade participants. Please access via King Street. No access available from Ida Lee Drive. Parade lines up at Ida Lee Park. Streets close to prepare for parade. 32 PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES Participation is free. The Parks and Recreation Department will host Santa in the parade. No other individuals will be allowed to pose as Santa. All participating groups must be at Ida Lee Park front field no later than 5:00pm. Giveaway items such as candy, coupons, etc. are encouraged. Throwing of candy, food items, toys, or any other object from floats, decorated vehicles, walking entries, or any parade participant is strictly prohibited. Entries wishing to distribute such items must designate walkers to accompany their entry and hand the items to spectators. Violators will be asked to leave the parade. All units must keep moving and in the line of march at all times. Units must not stop on the parade route at any time. Intentional delay or stopping will not be allowed and could result in removal from parade and/or disqualification of future parade participation. Each entry will be responsible for keeping their designated lineup area clean and should bring trash bags to clean up any mess resulting from entry preparation. Groups that include children under age six (6) must have a decorated vehicle available for children s transport. Any person operating a motorized vehicle must be at least 18 years old, have a valid drivers license and obey all traffic signs. Parade entry drivers must be prepared to stop at any time to allow other entries to enter the parade. Parade entry drivers must obey the instructions of parade volunteers and emergency personnel at all times. Parade entries are asked to not stop at the end of the parade route on South King Street to unload. Please follow police direction. Animal units must provide immediate waste cleanup. The use of sirens & air horns is prohibited and reserved for emergency purposes only. All parade entries should be decorated in a holiday/winter theme. Music, lights, and other decorations are highly encouraged! Lighted Float Participants will be automatically entered in the Holiday in Lights Contest to be awarded to the best overall light-decorated float. The winner will have their name engraved on the Holiday in Lights Trophy which will be displayed at Town Hall. Parade officials reserve the right to remove entries from the parade lineup for unsafe or inappropriate behavior, or for use of inappropriate or potentially disruptive signage and/or language. If floats must be partially or completely dismantled at the end of the parade route, bring trash bags and make arrangements to clean up any mess resulting from dismantling. 32
