U R G E N T N E E D F O R F O S T E R H O M E S!!! If you have been checking your recent s, you know that CNC Rescue is in need of Foster Homes for Rescued Newfs. Here is a message from Jenni Arnett, former CNC Rescue Chair- Open Your Home, Open Your Heart There are many ways to be active in the Colonial Newfoundland Club Rescue program. However, one of the most needed areas is a foster home. Unfortunately, very few people are willing to jump in and give a try to the job that is so critically needed for a Rescue to be successful. My family and I have been a foster home for different Rescues for the past several years. There are many very good reasons for deciding NOT to foster a homeless dog how will the Rescue dog(s) react to your dogs or visa versa? Is the homeless dog unwashed, un-groomed or possibly carrying fleas/worms/or worse that your dogs could catch? What if it has behavior problems? What if it s not house-broken? Chances are, if you foster, you ll eventually be faced with one or more of these circumstances or occasionally, all in the same dog! But these issues are not insurmountable; with some precautions and care you can be reasonably sure you aren t carrying anything infectious into your own home. If there are all these problems, why do we foster? That s the other side to the story. It s the feeling you get when you open a Christmas card with a picture of a beautiful, happy, health dog in full coat surrounded by a loving family---and you remember that dog when you first saw her skinny, almost hairless, just out of surgery and stinky beyond description. This dog (and she s real) would have been euthanized in a shelter as unadoptable. Instead, she s had her own happy ending. And her family? They had recently lost their dog of many years. They were hurting and wondering if they d ever get another dog they loved so much again. And as much as they were this dog s dream come true, she was their dream come true as well. Fostering can take some time your schedule is sure to be disrupted, your other dogs may or may not like the new Rescue, and you ll be on the phone letting the Rescue Chair know about the dog s behavior and possibly be talking to prospective foster homes. It s likely you ll be doing some basic obedience, crate training and possibly housebreaking. And you ll have to remember, that the Rescue dog is not going to stay. You ve got to love them while they re with you and be happy for them when they leave with their Forever Family. Letting go can also be a challenge! Rescue can t function without foster homes. As we found, the problems and worries about fostering are not insurmountable with a little planning and (sometimes) a lot of creativity. 2

In Memoriam Tempest's Princess Daisy Daisy Date of Birth December 7, 2009 Date of Loss- September 1, 2013 You and Bumpo are together again. We will love you always. The Ordoobadi family Newfoundland Passing In Mid October 2010, perky Hank and his female buddy, Baca, a Portuguese Water Dog, cavorted on Maryland s Ocean City beach, walked a mile, and, off- beach, waited, while I bought a newspaper. Completing the morning ritual, we walked back to our condo. There was no indication of any medical problem, then, or during the past summer in Maine, where Hank swam and hiked every day. On Oct. 31, 2010, Hank would not eat. I always joked, When my Hank won t eat, it s time to call the vet. Our appointment with Hank s vet in Westminster, Maryland, was on Nov. 2 nd. Testing was undertaken, and several days later, after our vet had conferred with his colleagues, Hank was diagnosed with a virulent form of bone cancer. Our vet, who had taken care of 91/2 year old Hank since his puppy days, described the horrendous, gradual side effects, leading to certain death. My husband, Dick, and I decided to euthanize Hank. Dick would be in the Mid-West until Nov. 11 th, so we hoped to wait until his return. I slept in a sleeping bag on the living room couch; so Hank, who had a slight fever, could sleep in the adjoining porch, cool, with all the windows open. He d come to me when he needed to go out, and we d take short walks at night. 8

In Memoriam One night, he lay down in the driveway and my mind raced as to which neighbor I d call at 3 a.m. to help lift him into the house. Hank rested for ten minutes, and then got up by himself. From then on, his walks were very brief. The weather that week was mild in Washington, D.C. so Hank and Baca could stay outside in our large, fenced in backyard. I cooked chicken and rice in broth every night, and he ate the smaller meals. Instead of the usual dog bone dessert treat, I took an Alpo one inch square Variety Snap, broke it into two pieces, soaked them in chicken broth, and he was able to swallow each piece. On November 11 th, after he ate his chicken breakfast, I brought Hank to the local D.C. veterinary hospital. He immediately went to the scale, and stepped on it, to proudly show me that he knew what was expected. He had lost ten pounds since the Nov. 2nd appointment. He walked willingly with the vet s assistant, and was put on an IV. Dick s plane was on time. We went right to the hospital. Hank walked into our assigned room, and reclined on the floor. We stayed with him for an hour, petting and talking to him. He recognized us, and tried, unsuccessfully, to get up. We stayed during the brief time, for the injection into the IV, to stop his heart, and, for a short time, with his limp body. I thought of his last effort to get up as his positive message that he appreciated his home. An incident that past summer remains a prominent memory. I was working at the kitchen sink, and he was, about ten feet away, watching me. I smiled at him. He immediately arose, came over to me and gave me a big kiss, then returned to his usual spot. He d refrained from kissing for the past year so this kiss was a surprise. I ve wondered if he had fore knowledge of his illness. Hank s ashes are buried at the top of the stairs, leading to our Maine beach. He liked to sit there after his swims, under the shady oaks, watching us below. The plaque, there, announces the ending-- 11/11/10 --but my saying, Hello, Hank every time I pass by, will not end. --Elaine A. Vande Hei, Ph.D. Member of CNC 9

Williamsburg Brown Bag Donations Needed!! Hello Colonial Newfoundland Club Members, It is now fall, although it really doesn t feel that way, and time to think about the Williamsburg parade and Colonial Newfoundland club annual meeting. This year I, Mary Coombe, along with Jessica Regan will be helping with the brown bag auction. Over the years we have received many wonderful donations and have raised a lot of money for Newfoundland Rescue. Let s make this the best year yet! Please look through your items, find unique and wonderful things that we can offer and make lots of money! If you aren t able to bring it to Williamsburg, please contact me, or Jessica, and we can make arrangements to get it down to Williamsburg. If you are coming, please contact me or Jessica to tell us what you are bringing, so we can manage what we will have and coordinate the drop off with you. Thank you for supporting Colonial Newfoundland Club Rescue by donating some wonderful items for the brown bag! Don t forget to also bring lots of money for tickets so you can also purchase some items. 11 Rescue Redux Dear Dotty, Just wanted to tell you that we are doing well, quite well. We have a good feeding routine twice a day, they sit (or lie down after sitting) while we get their food bowls ready -- Benadryl and fish oil dropped in on top of the food. I ve been giving them a dollop of plain yogurt on top of that here recently All three dogs love that. My Duchess has learned the new feeding regimen. I tell Sinbad and Bella in a quiet voice when it s time for bed. I always call for Duchy and Angel to go upstairs and so I add them to the list. Angel likes to get her loving in bed for a few minutes right after we retire. Duchy goes wherever she wants to lie down for a couple hours and usually sleeps the latter part of the night in our bed. Sinbad and Bella have decided to sleep in our bedroom and they seem to stay the night there. I had a furnace maintenance man come to do a semi-annual cleaning and check-up Sinbad and Bella were just fabulously behaved. I could not have asked for better. I gave them a walkabout in the dark, dark night yesterday evening. Sinbad was a bit restless and so I decided to give them each separately about a ten-minute walkabout. Since it was so dark, I pulled out one of the lighted collars you gave us. That worked like a dream!! It lit our pathway and I did not need to worry about seeing where we walked. I told them they were holding the flashlight for Mommy! LOL They have been true love bugs. They ve been quick to learn to be gentle with Duchy and the kitties. George and Sinbad seemed to be bonding. Sinbad licks George a little sometimes and George rubs him in return. Bella seems to be trying to do the same with Angel, but in her enthusiasm, she sometimes barks at Angel, which makes Angel skittish and defensive. I tell Bella, Be nice to the kitty, and Bella will lie down and be still so she doesn t scare Angel further. Other times one will tiptoe up to the other and they ll sniff noses. I wonder how much time before that becomes Eskimo kisses. I have them scheduled to go to Levels training beginning next week. My son is going to handle Bella and me Sinbad to begin with. My husband and I have taken dogs through training classes in the past, this will be my son's first time. We will have a full house for Thanksgiving My family will be here. I think we ll be celebrating how thankful we are that our Newfies are great additions to the family. Thank you for all you did with these dogs and all you do with rescue!! Sinbad and Bella's Mom This letter was sent to Dotty Hudson from the family who adopted Sinbad and Bella. 11

Message from the President Dear Members, How quickly this year has passed! We are approaching my favorite activity for the year, the Williamsburg Parade and Annual Banquet. For many years I have enjoyed this event some of you will remember my children participating. The youngest, Philip, as an infant rode in a car seat strapped in a cart one year. He is now 17 years old It has been both a pleasure and an honor to serve the club. I couldn t imagine a better group of people who all work tirelessly for our beloved Newfoundlands. Our club activities run the gamut from the formal conformation shows to our Pancake Walk, and everything inbetween. There is truly something for everyone. I especially want to highlight our rescue and the OAR fund. We have helped so many Newfs in need through rescue, and through the OAR fund have reached out many more. I want to encourage anyone who can drive a Newf to the vet, help out!with home visits or if you can, to foster a Newf in need, please contact our Rescue Chair, Donna, and let her know what you can do to help. Many hands make light work. I want to formally thank the wonderful BOD who have served with me and made everything we have done possible. We don t always agree, but we are ALWAYS working for the betterment of the Newfoundland breed. I could not ask for a more dedicated and hardworking group of people. Thank you, everyone! Newfoundly, Rose Miller, President 12

CNC Annual Draft Test Oatlands, VA Of Fall and Carting AKA The Diaries of Lady Calza by Brad Cole The CNC hosts an annual Draft Test in addition to several other Newf related events during the year. Over the past few years, the Draft Test has been moved around some to help boost both the quality of the experience and the attendance. This year, the Draft Test was held at Oatlands Plantation, which is also the site of the CNC s Regional Specialty. Oatlands is a LOVELY place located in Leesburg, Virginia, which is in the middle of Virginia horse country. This year s draft test was a two-day event. This, along with the change of venue, is different from years past. The entire event was held November 9 th and 10th which ended up being a lovely weekend for all of those involved. It is a beautiful location that seems to be well liked by participants. The one change this writer would like to make is the location of the maneuvering course. Being the club photographer, I found the light in the chosen area to be less than optimal for taking high quality pictures. Calza and I left Williamsburg the day before the event. We stayed in Manassas, Virginia which is the site of one of our favorite pet friendly hotels in the area. Oatlands is an easy drive from there. Our drive up was both enjoyable and uneventful. Calza and I received a 6:30 wakeup call in order to get to Oatlands in time for Saturday s Draft Test. It turns out that we arrived at Oatlands around 8:00, which was WAY too early. We WERE able to catch up with some old friends, including one of the judges whom I know as an old president of the SENC. The extra time also 13

CNC Annual Draft Test Oatlands, VA gave me the extra time to take pictures of the preparation and the early exercises required for a draft title. The maneuvering exercise was over by lunchtime, and I decided to go back to Manassas. I was reminded that the freight haul would take place the next day; I agreed to come back on Sunday to get pictures of that. Then, Calza and I hit the road. We decided to go to one of our favorite places: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Gettysburg is only about an hour up Route 15 from Oatlands, so this trip wasn t as crazy as it sounds. Calza and I had a wonderful afternoon and early evening enjoying our favorite cigar shop on Gettysburg s town square. I also hit one of my favorite Chinese restaurants for dinner. Sunday saw us go back to Oatlands to get more Draft Test pictures. Fortunately, we didn t have to get up at 6:30 this time around. Calza and I took our time and got to the Draft Test just as the maneuvering exercise was ending. I was then able to get the freight haul pictures that people wanted. Personally, I think that Oatlands is a great location for a draft test as a good time was had by all. 14

In the distance he saw a young man picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. As the old man approached the young man, he asked, "Why do you spend so much energy doing what seems to be a waste of time?" The young man explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun. The old man exclaimed, "But there must be thousands of starfish. How can your efforts make any difference?" The young man looked down at the starfish in his hand and as he threw it to safety in the sea, he said," It makes a difference to this one!" 23
