In Memoriam Misty Misty Sailorbear s Sea Mist, CD, RN, WRD, DD, TDI February 6, 2000 June 13, 2010 After a few days of fighting symptoms at the ER that the vets couldn t diagnose, my precious Misty s heart gave out shortly after I last visited her. She was my first Draft Dog -- what a trooper! She was a supreme water dog and loved jumping off the boat most of all. I hope she s now jumping off of every boat she can find! Even though she wasn t swimming much this spring, she was still so excited to join us at the lake every week and enjoyed wading, treats, and just being with her family. There are no words to truly express what she s meant to me. I hope she knew how very much we love her and the utter joy she s brought to my life. What I ve learned from her can never be measured. And all her kisses have been priceless. Our mantra: Mommy loves you, Mistykins to the moon and beyond, little one to the moon and beyond, munchkin. Loved and missed by Debbie and Jeff Dennison, and sister Makai. You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us. ~Robert Louis Stevenson Colonial Newfoundland Club Summer Issue 91 Page 3

To All CNC Members, I am writing to ask for your help with our upcoming Draft Test on December 5, 2010 near Williamsburg, Virginia. Our Draft Test will be on Sunday of the Williamsburg weekend, which includes the Christmas parade and Annual Meeting on Saturday. We need help with the following committees: Stewards - Kandy will need stewards for the test. Contact her at vnsavannah@comcast.net Grounds and Equipment - Dave will need help with these: setting up for maneuvering course, basic control Saturday afternoon, and keeping the area picked up and clean. Hospitality for entrants, judges and committee members. This includes coffee, tea and doughnuts in the a.m., lunch for everyone at the site, hotel information, dinner for the judges on Saturday. Fund-raising - Raffle, brown bag, and shirt sales. Catalog and Advertising - Information for catalog ads, and design catalog with Test Chair. 8 CNC at the Reston Pet Fiesta Saturday May 7 th was the Reston Pet Fiesta on Market Street in the heart of the Reston Town Center. CNC had a booth for the second year giving out information and letting people get to know the Newfoundland first hand. This year was again a huge success with many people stopping by the booth to meet our dogs and ask questions about the breed. Spearheading the information and handouts was Judy Van Dyke who worked tirelessly, and made sure everyone s questions were answered. Many people expressed an interest in Fostering or Adopting a Newfoundland. Judy made sure they left with information, and our web site address. We also met a few Newfie owners who weren t aware of CNC (Judy got two new memberships.) It was a nice but slightly warm day; luckily we brought a kiddie pool filled with ice that the dogs really appreciated. Many people with long haired breeds stopped to let their dogs cool off in the pool, or just take pictures of the dogs chillin. Volunteers included Judy Van Dyke, Deborah Williams and Riley, Lisa Lathrop and her beautiful boy Gabe, Mary Coombe and Charlie, Dru Kappe, and Brad Cole with Vinnie who took most of the pictures for us. I brought Thunder, oops! and my new pup, Hudson, who Judy watched for me. He was pretty good except for what he did while in the pool that I won t mention here (hey it was cold!) Stopping by the booth were many CNC members including: Kathy and R.W. Emery with their handsome dogs, Kodi, and Titus, Kathy Holshey, with Macy, Paul, and Andrea Westerfield with three dogs, Ralph Grier, and his new dog, Chuck and Cookie Basham, and a few others. Colonial Newfoundland Club Summer Issue 91 Page 8
Paul Westerfield brought a cart; he gave rides, and explained the Newfoundland s Working Dog heritage. Kathy Holshey, and her talented dog Macy did a freestyle routine that was amazing; it really showed people how intelligent and trainable the Newfoundland is! Ohhhh-- Yeeeeess! We all had a good time, And I m sure many people were glad to meet the Newfs! --submitted by Dave Rothschild I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive. Gilda Radner Colonial Newfoundland Club Summer Issue 91 Page 9

The New Adventures of Vinnie by Brad Cole The Dog Days of Summer The CNC participates in the Summer Blast Festival each year; it is held at Codorus State Park in Hanover, Pennsylvania, otherwise known as the site of the CNC s Annual Water Test. Our Club puts on a Water Test Demonstration each year as a way of showing our thanks for allowing us have our Water Test at this park. This event also happens to be one of my personal favorite CNC activities held throughout the year. Vinnie and I left Williamsburg mid-morning on Friday, June 25th, so we could check into our dogfriendly hotel in York, with enough time to do some touring. We headed out to see my Godfather in Media, suburb of Philadelphia. After a great evening there, we returned to York. On Saturday, we arrived at the Summer Blast to find some rather hot weather and a pleasant surprise. The CNC was using a wooded area along the shore of the lake for the water test demo. The Club usually uses the same location for the Summer Blast as the Annual Water Test. The problem with that location is that there is no shade available! As the temperature approached 100 degrees during the demo, the shade was most appreciated. As a quick aside, it would be nice if the CNC could use this same shaded area for its Annual Water Test, (provided, of course, this shaded area of shoreline meets the water test site requirements of the NCA.) I was breaking in a new lens for my camera and thought it was a great fit for the particular spot the Club used for the demo. I ended up taking an entire roll of film during the FIRST demo. I decided to get going after the first demo because the weather was so warm; the air conditioning in the car would be easier on the dog. Vinnie and I headed off to Gettysburg to do some touring. I want to thank Mark McKeel and his crew for putting on an EXCELENT event. Mark did a great job, using a bull horn to Colonial Newfoundland Club Summer Issue 91 Page 11
explain to the crowd what each exercise involved. Mark also did a VERY good job thanking the park for letting us use their facilities. He was a typical class act. It is unfortunate the Summer Blast is only held once a year! Colonial Newfoundland Club Summer Issue 91 Page 12

Newfies Do K-9 s and Brews!! In May, Bob Rogers, along with Bruce and Bethany Karger, make a trek to Wisp Ski Resort in Maryland. Not your normal ski trip to say the least! Some time ago, the Wisp Mountain management contacted Bob Rogers and asked if he knew of any Newfies and their owners, who might like to participate in the K-9s, Tunes and Brews event held over Memorial Day Weekend. After listening to the scheduled activities, Bob said sure. He then contacted Bruce and Bethany to see if they were available that weekend. K-9s, Tunes and Brews is an event sponsored by Wisp Mountain Resort to raise money for the Garrett County, Maryland HART for Animals project. This money will go to support construction of a state of the art Animal Adoption Center, operation of a low cost spay/neuter clinic, and for adoption and transport of pets to reputable rescue organizations. The Newfies were glad to help, as were groups from MAD Dog (a Dog Disc Exhibition group,) the Garrett County Sheriff s K-9 Corps and Search/Rescue dogs, and several other dog groups. Bob, Bruce and Bethany braved the snow-making pond along with Dory and Jetty, to perform exercises from both the WRD and the WRDX tests. A crowd of about 150 people watched the demo. The dogs just loved the attention and being in the water again. The Tunes and Brews portion of the show featured several local bands playing a variety of music. There was also a beer tasting center featuring local microbreweries. The kids in attendance enjoyed face painting, animal petting, a scavenger hunt, and many other activities. The dogs had a great time and with the warmer weather, even the people were able to stand the cold water. According to the sponsors, the weekend was a great success! -submitted by Bruce Karger Colonial Newfoundland Club Summer Issue 91 Page 14
