The Newfoundland Club of America (NCA) The Newfoundland Club of America (NCA) is recognized by the American Kennel Club as the Parent club for the Newfoundland Breed. It is a national organization with 3500 members in the USA and worldwide. The NCA is responsible for the preservation, protection and welfare of the Newfoundland breed. It is also responsible for the Breed Standard which is a written description of the ideal Newfoundland, the education of breed owners on the nuances of the breed and overseeing the breed s health and welfare. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Newfoundland Club of America or subscribing to its quarterly magazine Newf Tide, go to the NCA website for more information: ncanewfs.org The Colonial Newfoundland Club (CNC) Our organization, The Colonial Newfoundland Club (CNC), is a regional club of Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia, and that part of West Virginia south of the Marshall-Wetzel County line. We have 228 members, including 34 Associate Members who reside outside the boundaries of our region. 79 members of CNC are also members of the NCA. The CNC encourages, and promotes the NCA-established Ethics Guide and breed standard. It sponsors working dog activities and specialty shows under the NCA rules, cooperates with and encourages the NCA objectives and sanctions. Colonial Newfoundland Club Winter Issue 94 Page 5

6 Annual Oregon Ridge Nature Center Pancake Breakfast & CNC Newf Walk March 5 th, 2011 (Rain/Snow date - March 6 th ) Come and enjoy the fruits of the labor of the ORNC staff, and volunteers, along with the park s Maple trees, at the Annual Oregon Ridge Nature Center Pancake Breakfast held at the Oregon Ridge Lodge. Then head out on the trails of the Oregon Ridge Nature Center with your Newf! CNC Members wishing to attend the event are asked to park at the bottom of the parking lot of the Oregon Ridge Lodge, between 9:00-9:15 am, and we'll enter the Oregon Ridge Lodge at 9:30. ***PLEASE NOTE DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN the Oregon Ridge Lodge*** Oregon Ridge Lodge Address Beaver Dam Road Cockeysville, MD Tickets for the breakfast may be purchased at the door-- $6.00 for adults, and $3.00 for children, ages two through eight. The ORNC does not permit advance purchase of tickets. Breakfast Details- Pancakes with 100% maple syrup, sausage, orange juice, coffee, tea, or milk are on the menu. Special handcrafted articles will be raffled. As always, other gift items will be raffled throughout the breakfast, and various plants will be on sale. The Nature Center Gift Shop will also be open, with good quality nature items for sale. At approximately 11:00 am, we will depart for the lower left-hand parking lot of the ORNC, near the lake Bath House (see map on next page.) We'll have some puppy play time and socialization before hooking up those Newfs who will be pulling their carts and heading out onto our Trail Walk. Please dress appropriately for the weather and ground conditions; layers are always a good way to go and weatherproof footwear is a must. 8 The New Adventures of Vinnie by Brad Cole The 2010 Annual Meeting Weekend Extravaganza The Colonial Newfoundland Club (CNC) holds a wide ranging group of events the first weekend in December every year. This group of events has been held in Williamsburg, Virginia at least since this writer has been a member. This year, the weekend s events occurred on December 4 and 5, The events included participation in Williamsburg s Annual Christmas Parade, the CNC s Annual Meeting, and the CNC s Annual Draft Test. Participants in the weekend s activities started arriving in Williamsburg on Friday, December 3. The host hotel was the Day s Inn on Richmond Road. The location of the host hotel is important because it happens to be on the Christmas Parade s route. Starting mid to late afternoon, Newfs and their people began to arrive at the Day s Inn, seemingly from all over. The location also provided time to catch up with old friends that may not have seen each other for several months. Saturday featured the Williamsburg Christmas Parade. The weather was clear and in the low 30 s, perfect for Newfs to be walking in a parade. Lineup for the parade started at 8:00AM along the main street of the Williamsburg historic district. Paradoxically, the street in question is called Duke of Gloucester, or D.O.G. Street by the locals. The CNC was assigned the number 11 spot in the parade, putting us near the front. The parade started at 8:30 sharp and traveled down Richmond Road to Brooks Street (the Day s Inn happens to be on this corner.) From there, the parade traveled a few blocks to a vacant parking lot and athletic field used by William and Mary. The CNC s part of the parade was over by 9:45. I experienced one little snafu in the parade. I bent down to take a picture of two Newfs hitched to a cart and decorated for the parade. I noticed a draft when I stood back up. It turns out that I ripped the crotch out of my new pants when I took the picture of the dogs! I had to walk the entire length of the parade with this particular wardrobe malfunction. Sub freezing temperatures made the experience even more memorable! Fortunately, my jacket was large enough to cover the problem from the roving eyes of onlookers. The CNC s Annual Meeting was held in the breakfast room at the Day s Inn, following a catered lunch. Afterwards, the Club held an uneventful Annual Meeting, followed up by awards, a raffle and Silent Auction. Sunday was the day of the CNC s Annual Draft Test, held at Chickahominy Riverfront Park, a few miles east of Williamsburg. The weather for this event was cold (we received a sprinkling of snow overnight,) windy and clear. Seven entrants and eight dogs showed up for the event. Unfortunately, there were no qualifiers. The lack of qualifiers did not, however, dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees. Everybody seemed ready to come back for the 2011 event. The CNC would like to thank those who came to the Draft Test. They would also especially like to thank the two judges, Joyce Echon Butler and Beverly Karger. Both came from Pennsylvania to be judges at our event. The newsletter will be ed/posted to the CNC website on or about the 15 th of May, August, November and February. All members are encouraged to submit articles, Brags, news or any finds they think will be of significance to the membership and help to make Bear Fare interesting. You may submit virtually any format. However, Microsoft Word is preferred, as I do not have Word Perfect editing capability.
