2 In memory of a DFWDC Life Member: A Tribute to Catharine Kay Shaffmaster to Mom started out as a kid with Boston Terriers. She had her first CH when she was 13. She also had a littermate to the great CH Vardon's Frosty Snowman who is a "name" in the English Bulldog world. When she met the love of her life, he didn't much care for the Bostons and they didn't much care for him. Shortly after they were married, they were sent on a 3 year tour to Germany. The dogs all stayed at home with my mom's mother. Mom was absolutely miserable without a dog. Finally, my dad said, "Oh, OK, if you HAVE to have a dog, I guess I could tolerate a Dachshund". Mom's response? "A Dachshund? Are you kidding me? Only someone with a warped sense of humor would want one of those". But she decided that a Dachshund was better than no dog at all. "Doxie" was sold to Mom with a forged pedigree so could not be registered with the AKC when they came back to the states. Doxie was THE smartest Dachshund we've ever known. Mom had also purchased two red mini girls in Holland from Frau Greta Neumann who was a well known Dachshund breeder. Those girls were fabulous and could be competitive even today; they had lovely heads. But they were over 9 pounds and there was no class in the US in which they could be shown. So Mom helped found the obedience club in Minneapolis and became active in obedience. Trena had the honor of receiving a under Blanche Saunders. In typical Dachshund "full of herself" fashion she received a ZERO the next day. Blanche was convinced that it wasn't the same dog from the day before. We thought smooth minis were THE only way to go. Until we got "Heidi", our first LH. And it's been ML's ever since. Mom served as the treasurer of the Heart of America Dachshund Club for many years. As she aged, she could still be counted upon to sell catalogs. She reveled in my successes as much as I did. She was my biggest supporter. As her health failed, she greatly regretted not being able to attend shows but could hardly wait to get a phone call to see if we'd done anything. Led by her beloved "Tom", there were many little Dachshunds dancing for joy over the Rainbow Bridge, happy to see her. Wendy Shaffmaster McQuiston 2 15
