From the Presidents Desk It is with much please I announce that we are now incorporated and will be known as South East Queensland Zebra Finch Society Inc (SEQZFS Inc). It has taken sometime for me to get this sorted but it is now finally done. The club adopted the model rules of Incorporation so you probably won t notice any change but there will be some loose ends the committee will tidy up in regards to the club rules to ensure we meet the incorporation guidelines; were are 99% there anyway. As part of becoming Incorporated I MUST inform you that your membership with The South East Queensland Zebra Finch Society will automatically roll over to South East Queensland Zebra Finch Society Inc. The clubs year end will remain unchanged at 31st December. Should you NOT wish your membership to continue with South East Queensland Zebra Finch Society Inc please notify Jenny, club Secretary, immediately. I MUST also inform you that the club maintains public liability insurance through the Canary & Caged Bird Federation. *** A copy of the Incorporation rules is available to any member upon request. Our April meeting in Toowoomba saw the usual roll up of members who put on a large showing for our Table Show. There was a good range of birds and colours on show which provided a good talking point. Thanks to all those who attended on the day with special mention to Robbie March. Geoff & Jenny made birds available to members that they had bought back from their recent trip to WA. At the April meeting it was decided due to club activities over the next couple months we would not be holding a general meeting. Our next general meeting will be at our Annual Show in July. May 20th will see us join the QFS Sale Day with a display/show of Zebra Finch mutations under a marquee. We will be encouraging the public to participate by giving them the opportunity to select the Best Pair on the day with a prize of a bag of seed, kindly donated by John Pettigrew. The club has also booked a sales table for members to sell their excess ZEBRA FINCHES ONLY. If you can assist with birds for the display, sale or manning please let the me know. June 10th will see us fly the flag at the Ipswich Bird Spectacular. Once again this is a great opportunity for members to participate in Qld s largest Bird Show alongside Canaries, Budgies, Parrots, doves and quail. There will also be the usual sales section with many vendors and trades, including a plant stall, in attendance. Mark this day on your calendar as a day out with the family and support your club. Don t forget to checkout our update Page 4

Minutes for the SEQZFS Inc 15 April 2018 General Meeting The meeting was held at the Toowoomba residence of Tim and Kim Hartung. Members were treated to morning tea and a tour of Tim s aviaries, including a new one having three individual flights. This was followed by the table show with a good attendance of 19 birds. After the table show and discussion, a lovely barbeque lunch was enjoyed. Welcome...President Tim Hartung opened the meeting at 1305hrs and welcomed all members. Thanks were extended to all members who travelled to the meeting. Members gave a vote of thanks to Tim and Kim for their hospitality. Apologies---Paul and Kym Williams, and Duane and James Castle. Attendance as per attendance book. 7 The minutes of the previous meeting were published in the March 2018 Zebra Times and approval as a true record of that meeting was requested. The purchase of a Common Seal was also required. Tim Hartung explained that the club had current and past Life Members and these members needed to be acknowledged under the new club title. Motion...Tim Hartung moved, seconded Rob March, that Life Memberships existing under the SEQZFS name will be honoured under SEQZFS Inc as ordinary members with permanent exemption from annual fees. 7 Part 2 The first birds I ever owned were Show Pen Homer Pigeons back in the early 80 s. I was very successful showing these when I was younger. Birds I own now are, Zebra Finches, Gouldians, Various Parrot finches, Bengalese, Ruddies, Orange Breasts and Bourkes parrots. I have worked in the aged care industry for the past 18 years. My favourite colour is green and I love prawns and roast lamb Famous people I have met are Ram Chandra, Wally Lewis, Greg Chapel, Brian Manix, Mal Meninga, John Farnham. Some of my favourite jobs have been working as a Roustabout in the shearing sheds, driving a bull dozer/backhoe on the Ilfracombe Shire Council and Teaching. I have a passion for true crime and crime novels My favourite present when I was a kid was a horse named Sao Biscuit. Something that is extremely important to me is I represented Qld in Indoor Cricket and Central Qld in Softball. 8 YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN!! A quick decision to go to Perth, has to have been one of the most spontaneous acts we have done in a while. Geoff needs as much bird judging practice as possible to ultimately become a Nationally Accredited Judge, so the idea of going west for their Young Bird Show was too good an opportunity to pass up. It seems we are always learning during our lifetime, and sometimes we have to grasp the learning bug with both hands and go for it. We were met at the Perth airport by one of the Western Australian Zebra Finch club members, Murray, and the wonderful hospitality didn t stop until we were dropped off at the airport to travel home 5 days later. We had a wonderful few days, renewing friendships, seeing beautiful birds, and visiting Western Australian sights as well. Having 180 birds on the shelf for their YBS was a mighty effort for the 13 members present. Three other judges assisted Geoff on the day, but he was left alone many times to judge a class by himself. According to the other judges, he got it right!! He was pleased with his performance, and it goes to show you are never too old to learn a new trick. As we age, our recovery time is extended, so we took it easy for a few days on our return. Where to next?????? Jenny Stolberg ZFSWA 2018 Young Bird Show We were pleased to have Geoff Stohlberg assist with the Judging. Feedback of his judging from our senior judges was very positive. WA Young Bird Show...Jenny Stolberg reported on a recent trip to Perth where Geoff Stolberg participated in the judging of the WA YBS with Harry Doven, Neil Creighton and Joe Janissen. 10 Editorial. Ellis W. Thornley. It was put to me as a point "Without us the Society will be nothing" and this made me think what 'Does' make a Society, A Society is made up of members who follow a line of thought, when all those thoughts are put together, you have a Society. Our Zebra Society is made up of various groups and looking at our membership I put it together this way: 1/5 -- Showman. 2/5 -- Showman and Breeders. 1/5 -- Breeders. 1/5 -- People who are really interested in the Subject. Showman: These people are totally interested in achieving top Showman of the year so that everyone remembers who they are. They are very competitive in nature. Showman and Breeders: Those are the people who make up the body of shows and Society; enter a number of birds to enjoy some competitiveness, they also spend time breeding a number birds that hold their interest. They are out to "Breed" the winning bird from their own efforts and enjoy the thrill. (I place myself in this group in case you wish to ask). Breeders: not interested in Shows but have fun breeding any or all Birds, without these people Shows would not exist, in essence they are the backbone of the Society. They are completely dedicated to their hobby. Interested People: There are many people in this group; they like receiving magazines; looking at photos and reading all they can; may have a number of birds but mainly an interest in gaining Knowledge. Without the combination of all these groups a Society will not be formed. One group can form a Society but without workers on the scene no progress will be made and soon, the Society will collapse. The workers generally belong to group 2 and do all the slogging to prepare, run and in general ensure that everyone has a great time. Group 3 provide all that is necessary for the other two groups to preform and lastly the 'Interested People' provide the general questions that keep everyone on their toes. The South East Queensland Zebra Finch Society has all these groups of people that help in all ways to form a Society, each doing a little of what pleases them and the outcome is our great Zebra Finch Society, Page 1 July 05 Page 10

SHOW FAULTS FOR COLOUR AND MARKINGS This paper is to be read in conjunction with the approved show standards for each of these varieties. Please remember that the images in the standard are a general guide only. The colours are not directly related to the approved colour in the written standard. It is much too hard to produce a drawing with each of the pantone numbered colours included. The tools used do not permit it. ALUMINA Markings: The cheeks and flanks have no match with any other mutation. The cheeks are Light Tan and the flanks are Fawnish Tan. Both are paler and less depth in the phaeomelanin than any other mutation. The approved colour of the cheeks of both Cream backed and CFW is Pale Orange. The original mutation from which the Alumina standard was prepared were in a tonal range unique to this variety. Body colour: The intention with this mutation was to preserve the pale body colour, hence, Polished Aluminium. Faults are often too dark (approaching the breast plate of Silver); occasionally too light. Anecdotally some birds have two-tone wings, unacceptable. When preparing the drawn standard it was not possible to demonstrate the fine horizontal stress lines that are seen on both the wings and the upperparts. Please note the approved Show Faults in the Standard. Head and Body do not show the flecking that is unique to this variety. And Excess colour, e.g. cockbird markings too dark. CREAMBACKED Markings: The phaeomelanin markings must be consistent with the CFW standard. The eumelanin markings are to be fawn. Not grey range colour. Note the approved colour is the same as the body colour of a Fawn. It is NOT the colour of a breastbar on a Fawn cockbird. Body colour: The intention with this mutation is to preserve the rich cream body colour to ensure sufficient contrast with the white belly. Note that there is a delicate balance between strengthening the body colour and getting too much colour in the markings. Do not allow one to dominate the other. Look at the big picture. Do not allow a preference for either to be foremost at the expense of the other. Underparts to be white. NB the cockbird s throat stripes are fawn on a white background. A desirable feature, not often seen now, is white cheeks on the hen. The lack of this feature does not attract a heavy penalty due to its rarity. The upperparts must not be uneven in colour. Page 11

CHESTNUT FLANKED WHITE Markings: All markings are diluted on this variety but must be diluted consistently. There should be a significant gap between the markings of CFW and those of Marked White. Check markings carefully. Do not confuse pale grey markings with fawn markings. Look at all eumelanin markings to make a judgment. If any marking is too strong in colour it s classification must be considered. Body colour: The body colour must be white. No darker than off-white. The head and nape of some younger birds is often suffused with grey. That is a show fault. SLATE Markings: All phaeomelanin markings should be full colour. Eumelanin markings are diluted to dark grey. Body colour: There have been various shades of Slate over the years but the darker tones have been adopted. The mealing creates a bluish tone, particularly in the back and wing coverts, and accounts for the earlier name of Normal Blue. The Standard says mealing desirable. The absence of mealing is acceptable but not preferred. A demonstration of mealing is to be given. NB Beige alone is the only other variety where mealing could/should be present. BEIGE Markings: All phaeomelanin markings should be full colour. Eumelanin markings are diluted to light brown. Body colour: There have been various shades of Beige over the years but the darker tones have been adopted. The mealing is not common in Beige but should be looked for. The Standard says mealing desirable. The absence of mealing is acceptable but not preferred. Photo sourced from SEQZFS Inc. website written by Ken Glasson Page 12

On Saturday 12 th May Paul & I attended the Marburg Ag Show with entries in the Finch Section of the show. It has been my intention to show more regularly at these ag. shows to promote the Zebra Finch & SEQZFS Inc.but time gets away on you.we benched a selection of birds across all colours we breed to put on a reasonable display for the public. In all there were 59 finch entries; 29 Zebs, 13 Natives, 10 Foreign, 2 Bengalese (hybrids) and 5 prs, judged by John Albert. I was fortunate to win Champion Zebra with a Fawn Hen which also took Best Finch Hen and Reserve Champion Finch. Grand Champion Finch was a Red Faced Pytillia. It was a great day shared with fellow aviculturists who put on a good selection of birds across all sections; finches made up approx. 25% of the total entries. I was asked to steward for Terry White who judged the Budgie & Canary sections and found this a great experience. As usual these country shows are a great opportunity to show case our hobby to the general public. I must thank Paul for also supporting this event, though he was beaten by a better bird Finch section I was fortunate to win Champion Zebra with a Fawn Hen which also took Best Finch Hen and Reserve Champion Finch. Well done Tim & Paul Page 13

On Saturday 12th May, Tim & I attended the Marburg Show. We entered about 20 Zebra Finches in their Bird Show. We thought it would be a good opportunity to show our favorite little bird, and hopefully maybe encourage someone to show some interest in coming to our Shows. The day was terrific with awesome weather. We had a great time talking amongst our fellow bird breeders, be they Parrots, Budgies, Finches or Canaries. I was assigned the job of being involved with the judging of the Budgies and Canaries. This is the best way that you can learn about the different varieties of these birds and what to look for. I was surprised at the different classes the Canaries have but was used to the Budgie classes. At the end of the judging our President came away with Best Zebra Finch of Show with a Fawn Hen. Tim s Fawn Hen was also judged as Reserve Champion Finch of Show The day was excellent with a lot of fun between all the different breeders. It was great to make new friends and catch up with old ones. We plan to try and attend more of the Ag Shows throughout the year as they really are a lot of fun. We will put the dates of the up-coming shows in future ZT issues FYI!!! If you would prefer, ring Tim or myself and we should be able to help you out. Paul Williams Please look for your Ag Show Brochure attachment to May ZT this month... Page 14
