3 From the Presidents Desk Well another Fed has been run and from all accounts it was another success. We managed a respectable result for the team with some great individual results. We ll done to everyone and thanks to the Stolberg s and Pettigrew s for flying the Qld Flag in the west. Plans are already underway for next years inaugural event Melbourne. It is with much sadness I inform you of the recent passing of past Club Secretary, Clive Clarke. Clive was a dedicated hard worker for the club and instrumental in establishing the Alumina mutation. I also recently received the news of the passing of ZFSA member and past President Grant Bastin. Grant was a young 54 and a true aviculturist. We were fortunate to have Grant as our very first interstate Young Bird Show Judge a few years ago. It always saddens to hear of the passing of fellow aviculturists and our thoughts are with their family during these difficult times. The warm end to winter has certainly stirred the birds into breeding with most breeders reporting an early start to the season. If you haven t paired up yet its still not too late. Some rain would be a welcome sight to really get the ball rolling. The dryer than average winter and long term dry forecast could play havoc with the breeding season; I guess time will tell. Might be worth considering some bathing or misting facilities to minimise the chances of dead in shell. Our friends down south returned from Fed to host the inaugural Bathurst Regional Avicultural Society s Zebra Finch Young Bird Show with the Orana (Dubbo) Avicultural Society. From reports it was great day with 105 birds benched and judged by Geoff Wheeler, Dubbo. Well done guys on promoting the Zebra Finch to the wider community. This month we hope to see many of you make the trek up the hill to the Downs for our monthly meeting. We ll have a post-fed discussion along with this months Table Show discussion on the White Series (Grizzle, Pied & White) and any other colour you choose to bench on the day. Don t forget our Annual Sale Day next month at the Pettigrew s. if you have any quality spare birds that members might be able to use or your chasing that something special make your way along for the day. If you re chasing something in particular put that call out and someone may be able to assist. Happy breeding.. Page 3

4 Subject: Death of past member & secretary, Clive Clarke Hi My Dad, Clive Clarke of Rochedale South, was a member as well as the secretary of the South East Qld Zebra Finch Society for quite a few years until - we don't know when for sure, but I think about 7 or 8 years ago. Just advising that he passed away last Sunday, peacefully in his sleep. He was 88. He is survived by his wife, Andre aged 87. He'd separated his birds into M/F as he couldn't continue the breeding program due to health issues, and their numbers gradually declined. Sadly, his last bird died, presumably from old-age, about a week after he went into aged care. thanks Alan Alan Clarke 24 Springfield Crescent, Daisy Hill Queensland, Australia alanclarkeau@yahoo.com Home Phone: (07) Mobile Phone: The local members who worked for the 2003 Federation Meeting and Show held in Queensland. 5 In memory of Clive Clarke by Ray Robinson The Zebra Finch fraternity has lost another of our valued members with the passing of Clive Clarke who joined the South East Queensland Zebra Finch Society in September 1993 and was awarded Life Membership in I realise that many of the current Members would not have met him but I feel the need to mention some aspects of his many and varied achievements while he was Secretary of the South East Queensland Zebra Finch Society from January 1996 to January 2007 until the time he found it necessary to resign from the position due to other commitments on the days of our monthly meetings. Clive was a valued and most efficient Secretary during his long tenure, ever willing and able to help whoever contacted him regarding Zebra Finches and the Society in general. He recorded his own notes at each meeting, and every month provided the Editor with a well-written, informative Secretary s report. He was always a gentleman and loved a joke. In particular, I remember how he enjoyed taking a rise out of his wife Andre (in good nature of course). He always participated in the setting up and dismantling of staging for our Shows, and Federation Shows when they were held in Queensland. Clive took on the task of breeding and establishing the Alumina Zebra, one of the newer mutations at that time, and his extensive records provided proof of its genetic inheritance, for which the Zebra fanciers can be eternally grateful. He owned a small electric circular saw which he used for cutting timber and for making his own show cages, breeding cages and nest boxes for his birds. Each afternoon when he lived at Rochedale South he would scatter a large quantity of seed near the driveway in the front of his house to feed droves of wild Crested Pigeons. Many of these birds became very tame and would walk so near to him that they would surround him in their efforts to pick up the seed. In conclusion, it was an honour to have known Clive, and the Zebra Finch Clubs in Australia have lost a most efficient, very genuine and good-living man. Alumina A cock bird was bought at Living Gardens Pet Shop in Brisbane by Mr Steve Mc Millan, Narangbar Qld in late He reproduced this bird in both cock & hen form and has since passed his stock onto Mr Clive Clarke, Brisbane Qld; who has continued to develop the mutation. It is best described as a silverback, ie Cream-Back with silver on back, neck and wings. The Alumina is now accepted as a full standard by the Federation of Zebra Finch Societies of Australia. The Fawn Alumina (Opal) was accepted as a Developmental Standard in Page 5

12 WHAT IS TUMMYRITE The Science Behind a Unique Supplement Dr. Michael Evans Avian Nutritionist Applied Nutrition Pty. Ltd. INTRODUCTION This is part 1 of a series of articles on the Science behind the Tummyrite range of supplementary products for birds. Part 1 outlines the overall objectives of the Tummyrite product and its origins, and why such a product is needed for the effective care and feeding of captive birds. Sound nutrition is about adequate nutrient delivery to birds on a daily basis according to their physiological needs at the time. It is about knowing what nutrients are needed and the amount that needs to be delivered to each bird daily to maintain its health, wellbeing and reproduction. Feed ingredients we feed are a means to an end. Feed ingredients are packets of nutrients which can be combined in numerous ways to meet the bird s daily nutrient needs. Birds do have preferences for certain ingredients and this must be taken into account when choosing ingredients to be included in their daily diet. Choosing ingredients that contain components suitable for their ability to digest and assimilate nutrients from them is critical. There is a big difference between birds in the wild and birds kept in captivity. In the wild, birds forage for their food continuously on a daily basis and are selective in what they eat. In the wild, their successful survival is dependent on how well they forage in the habitat they are confined. We have limited knowledge about the feeding habits and nutrient needs of many species of birds in the wild. Also, if their habitat is destroyed, and their food source is limited, or if they are challenged by some severe disease, they may not survive or reproduce, but there is an opportunity for them to move habitat to where food and nesting sites are available and to avoid disease challenges, they have a chance to survive. What is clear, birds in captivity do not have that same opportunity to move and are completely reliant on what we give them, and they have little or no opportunity to forage for themselves and be selective. Also, when we confine birds we give them no opportunity to escape disease challenges. If we do not give our birds the correct nutrients, we give them little or no opportunity correct any nutrient deficiencies through foraging. Tummyrite was developed to assist birds in captivity to correct any significant potential nutrient deficiencies, to improve the digestibility of the food we feed to them, and to provide a means by which they can cope with potential disease challenges during captivity. To help them to develop their own natural immunity to cope with disease challenges. However, I cannot over emphasise the importance of biosecurity and quarantine in a captive environment in order to minimise disease challenges. Prevention is always better than cure. BACKGROUND Tummyrite has its origins in the development of suitable supplements for the Organic Poultry Industry. Many of the natural feed components in Tummyrite have been used very successfully in commercial organic poultry flocks for the last 12 years to improve the digestibility of major feed components, such as carbohydrates and proteins, and to assist organic poultry to cope with disease challenges. The normal veterinary medicines such as drugs and antibiotics are not available to organic poultry production because the Organic Standards forbid their use in feeds or as treatments. There are a range of natural nutritional phytogenic products which can assist birds to cope with small to medium disease challenges. Page 12

13 WARNING: Tummyrite is a nutritional supplement and NOT a medicine and is not designed to be a substitute for poor management or proper veterinary care when required. In cases of severe disease challenges bird-keepers are encouraged to contact their veterinarian immediately for proper veterinary advice. Tummyrite gives best results when used at the recommended rate and where good husbandry and management exists. It is an AID to good management NOT a replacement. WHAT IS TUMMYRITE? TUMMYRITE is a range of nutritional supplements suitable for all classes of birds and is designed with five main objectives: 1. To improve the digestibility and utilisation of the main components of the food of graniverous birds i.e. seed grains. 2. To provide some key nutrients that are not provided in many of the main feed components fed to birds. 3. Provide some components, such as herbs and yeast functional fibres which have antimicrobial and binding actions to reduce pathogen numbers and thereby reduce the disease challenge to birds. 4. To assist the birds to develop their own natural immunity against disease challenges. To enhance the bird s natural gut microflora by providing the necessary substrates for these favourable microflora to flourish. There are different TUMMYRITE products depending on the type of birds being fed. These include Finches and Softbills, Canaries, Budgerigars and Parakeets, Parrots and Lorikeets, Pigeons and Poultry. TUMMYRITE is a composite product of multi-enzymes, prebiotics, vitamins, trace minerals, organic selenium, nutritional herbs, nucleotides, yeast functional fibres, amino acids, carotenoids and a highly digestible protein with the majority of the anti-nutritional factors removed. It is included at a rate of 20g/kg of feed. TUMMYRITE +PLUS is TUMMYRITE with added Calcium and Electrolytes. This product can be used when inadequate calcium and electrolytes are being fed. It is included at a rate of 50g/kg of feed. In the next part of this series of articles, part 2, I will discuss objective 1 and the components in Tummyrite and Tummyrite +Plus that assist in improving the digestibility and utilisation of the main food components i.e. seed.
