1 POULTRY (All chickens & waterfowl) State Fair Entry: Separate entry is due to the Indiana State Fair by July 1. References: BU-6363 Poultry 1 Scratching the Surface (Grades 3-5) BU-6364 Poultry 2 Testing Your Wings (Grades 6-8) BU-6265 Poultry 3 Flocking Together (Grades 9-12) Poultry Management Technique 4H 729 Poultry Science 4H 679 Poultry Showmanship Objective: The showing of livestock, and 4-H as a whole, is intended to be a learning experience for members. It is incumbent upon a member participating in a livestock project to provide primary care and grooming of their animals throughout the project s entirety. It is recognized a member will need assistance on occasion by livestock superintendents, adult leaders, other members, family members and adults. It is the expectation of the Clay County 4-H Council Board of Directors that any assistance provided be for the purpose of teaching a member correct care and grooming and not be an action undertaken by an individual solely in an effort to help place the animal higher by improving showing characteristics. It is the policy of the Clay County 4-H Council Board of Directors that no professional grooming is allowed during fair week. For the purpose of this section, professional grooming is defined as a person who accepts of benefits monetarily for the service rendered. Enrollment: 1. All 4-Hers are responsible for the individual care of their livestock project! 2. All 4-Hers must provide feed and feed and water their own chickens and waterfowl. 3. Poultry show entry form must be turned in to Extension Office by June 1st. 4. Birds entered at County Fair must be owned, raised, and cared for by the 4-Her. 5. Individual bird identification is not required for entry, although it is highly desirable. Pigeons shown at the Indiana State Fair are required to wear a seamless leg band with an identification number. 6. All 4-H exhibitors should have been enrolled in Clay County 4-H and in the poultry project by May 15th of current year. 7. In each commercial 4-H chicken class, two pullets or two hens constitute one entry. A 4-H er may show a maximum of 16 birds or 8 different pairs of poultry of not the same variety. 8. Blood testing will be Saturday, June 11 from 11-3 pm 9. Final show entries dropped by July 1st at 7pm. Health: SEE GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL SPECIES 1. All Poultry in state or out-of-state are required to have an official health certificate. Such animals must show no symptoms of any infectious or contagious disease and be permanently and individually identified and such identification must be clearly indicated on the accompanying health certificate; provided however, at the discretion of the state veterinarian, the health certificate may be waived in lieu of an inspection by personnel approved for this purpose by the state veterinarian. 2. All poultry presented for exhibition shall be accompanied by an official health certificate of veterinary inspection or an appropriate National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) certificate
2 3. All poultry presented for exhibition must meet one of the following requirements: a. Test negative for pullorum-typhoid within 90 days prior to the date of their exhibition. b. Be hatched from eggs originating from certified NPIP pullorum-typhoid clean flocks. c. Originate from a flock where the entire flock is certified NPIP pullorum-typhoid clean. d. For more information on poultry health requirements call the Indiana State BOAH at (877) , extension No clinical signs of disease. No poultry may be exhibited showing signs of infectious or communicable disease. 5. No external parasites. No poultry may be exhibited showing excessive signs of external parasite infestation. 6. All poultry must be washed before bringing to the fair and clean when brought to the fair. Penning: Poultry, pigeons, and waterfowl exhibitors will furnish bedding materials. Show: 1. All 4-H Livestock will be shown by current Clay County 4-H members only! 2. Commercial 4-H Chicken classes: a. Pullets: two female birds hatched between *August 1st and May 1st b. Hens: two female birds in laying condition hatched before *August 1st of current year c. Broilers: two birds of the same variety; 6-8 weeks of age & not over 5 1/2 pounds on show day d. Roasters: two birds of the same variety; 8-12 weeks of age and between 5 1/2-10 pounds on show day 3. Description of Commercial classes: a. White Ear Lobe or white shell - pullets or hens b. Red Ear Lobe or brown shell - pullets or hens c. Meat Type - Broilers or Roasters 4. 4-H Standard Exhibition Classes (Large Fowl): a. A 4-Her may enter for show a maximum of one entry per class for a total of 24 birds. b. Judging will be judged according to the American Standard of Perfection as authorized by the American Poultry Association c. Description of classes by age: 1. Cock - a male bird hatched prior to *August 1, Hen - a female bird hatched prior to *August 1, Cockerel - a male bird hatched on or after *August 1, Pullet - a female bird hatched on or after *August 1, 2015 d. Standard Exhibition Classes are broken into six different classes: American Breeds & Varieties - Plymouth Rock - Barred, White, Buff, Partridge, Columbian; Dominique; Wyandotte - Silver Laced, Golden Laced, White Buff, Partridge, Silver Penciled, Columbian; Rose Comb Rhode Island Red; Jersey Giant - Black, White; New Hampshire; A.O.V. Asiatic Breeds & Varieties - Braham - Light, Dark, Buff; White; A.O.V. Young Hen - Female bird banded on or after January 1 d. Pigeon classes are broken down into three different types of breeds: 1. Fancy breeds 2. Sporting breeds 3. Utility breeds 7. 4-H Commercial Water Fowl Classes: a. A 4-Her may enter a maximum of one male or female duck of any age for a total of four birds. Plus one pen of Broilers or Roasters. b. Description of classes: 1. Peking Ducks 2. A.O.C. Ducks 3. Embden Geese 4. A.O.C. Geese 5. Broilers: two birds of the same variety; 6-8 weeks of age & not over 5 ½ pounds 6. Roasters: two birds of the same variety; 8-12 weeks of age and between 5 ½ - 10 pounds 8. 4-H Exhibition Water Fowl Classes: a. A 4-Her may enter a maximum of one pair of birds of any age per class for a total of seven pair of birds. b. One male and one female constitute one pair. c. Birds will be judged according to the American Standard of Perfection as authorized by the American Poultry Association d. Description of classes: 1. Heavyweight Duck 2. Medium weight Duck 3. Lightweight Duck 4. Bantam Duck 5. Heavyweight Geese 6. Medium weight Geese 7. Lightweight Geese 9. Each bird exhibited must have been raised by the owner as part of his or her 4-H project. 10. In judging classes of birds, special attention will be given to growth, development, and production qualities. 11. It is suggested that 4-H club members be present at the time their 4-H poultry exhibit is judged. 12. Family Poultry flock exhibits 1/2 dozen eggs. 13. All waterfowl will be brought in day of show and returned home after the Poultry show except for the meat pen ducks that are going through the auction. 14. All poultry, pigeon & waterfowl will be judged as a blue, red or white group. POULTRY SHOWMANSHIP Junior Showmanship for 4-H members in the 3 rd, 4 th or 5 th grade on January 1 of the current year. Intermediate Showmanship for 4-H members in the 6 th, 7 th or 8 th grade on January 1 of the current year. Senior Showmanship for 4-H members in the 9 th grade or above on January 1 of the current year. 4-H ers will demonstrate their ability to present birds that are clean, healthy, trained and manageable, along with the techniques of proper display. This activity provides an opportunity to competitively demonstrate
5 one s knowledge and skill in raising, conditioning, evaluating and handling poultry. (See 4-H manual number 679, 4-H Poultry Showmanship, available from the county Extension office for details.) LIVESTOCK AUCTION To be in the AUCTION you MUST be in a minimum of 3 entries.
