2 Page 2 PACIFIC NORTHWEST POULTRY ASSOCIATION No President s Message and No Mee ng Minutes were submi ed this month. This Year, Northwest Serama fanciers celebrated St. Patricks Day with a splendid Tabletop Show at the Washington Feather Fancier s Spring Show in Monroe, WA. Seramas are tradi onally shown on a table in front of the judge, where they are judged on their tameness and their character as well as evaluated for type and condi on. A good serama poses naturally when the exhibitor tosses them gently on to the table in front of the judge (called "flipping the bird.") (Seramas who fly off the table twice are disqualified.) The birds stru ed their stuff on holiday appropriate green carpet in front of judge Brian Decker, who kindly donated his me for this event. Sadly, many fine birds did NOT approve of the official carpet and failed to show (or even stand up.) (I foresee a rush on Home Depot carpe ng as fanciers rush to train their birds for the next event.) The Champion of Show was a white frizzle hen. 71 birds were shown by 9 exhibitors. Here are the results: YOUTH SHOW (8 Birds) Two exhibitors: Mackenzie Brown and Megan Reid Ch of Show AOV Pullet by Mackenzie Brown Res Ch of Show AOV Hen by Mackenzie Brown Ch Cock by Mackenzie Brown OPEN SHOW (63 Birds, 7 Exhibitors) Ch of Show White Frizzle Hen by Anna Ballard Res Ch of Show AOV Cockerel by Michelle Shannon AOV Class (28 Birds) Ch AOV Cockerel by Michelle Shannon AOV Ch Cock Anna Ballard Res Ch AOV Cock by Anna Ballard AOV Res Ch Cock Stephanie Flanery AOV Ch Cockerel Michelle Shannon AOV Res Ch Cockerel Michelle Shannon SILKIED CLASS (15 Birds) Ch Silkied Cock by Michelle Shannon Ch Silkied Cockerel Anna Ballard Res Ch Silkied Cock by Cynthia and Rob Smith Res Ch Silkied Cockerel Michelle Shannon AOV Frizzled Class (4 Birds) Ch AOV Frizzled Pullet by Stephanie Flanery Frizzled White Class (4 Birds) Ch White Frizzled Hen by Anna Ballard Res Ch White Frizzled Pullet by Anna Ballard Ch Cockerel Anna Ballard

I regret that I did not get the results of the cage judging. Seramas were accepted by the ABA in the white variety in 2011 and are expected to achieve APA recogni on in that variety this year. As Seramas are bred for pets and exhibi on, their standard for cage judging also includes points for character and tameness. A wild or aggressive Serama is not a Serama no ma er its type. The judge was Mr. Paul Weiser who said he had never seen so many white Seramas and was very impressed with the quality he was seeing in both whites and AOV birds here in the Northwest. Seramas are growing faster in popularity than any other breed currently. Their status as pets some mes even housepets is a rac ng groups of people not previously drawn to poultry. The birds require li le space and are excellent for children as fit and show birds. Long me poultry breeders and exhibitors may decry the Serama phenomenon and the interest in birds that are not "real chickens." They would do well to consider 3 things: First, similar arguments were made against the explosion in popularity of bantams just a few decades ago and we see today the vast importance of bantams in the poultry world. To those who complain about their lack of u lity for eggs and meat, I would ask, just how useful are our cochins and call ducks for these purposes? Second, I remind the fancy that our poultry clubs are aging out, with fewer young bodies to replace the exhibitors now too old and frail to haul around a bunch of heavy cages at set up and take down. Anything that enables our clubs to recruit new members can only be a good thing. (Besides, I have seen many a Serama person come to a show and become interested in another breed as well. So, if a Serama fancier buys a couple of Orpingtons to show, everybody wins.) Lastly, just look at the numbers: 71 more entries into the SCCL Class! The winner of that class has Seramas to thank for his starred win. Clubs should be delighted to have more birds, more exhibitors buying raffle ckets, more people to share our hobby with. The interest in these li le birds can only benefit everyone involved. I am glad to see the Washington Feather Fanciers helping to support the Serama fanciers in our area. Cynthia Smith, DVM

8 PACIFIC NORTHWEST POULTRY ASSOCIATION Page 8 CALL OUT TO BREEDERS!!!! The PNPA is once again hos ng a Breeders Auc on at this Spring s Northwest Na onal scheduled to be held the weekend of April 21 & 22, We are in need of started and adult birds, as well as a limited number of chicks. These birds should not be culls but poten al show quality birds. Chicks should come from show quality parents. The pens of adult birds (caged as single, paired, or trio) will be judged prior to the auc on by an APA sanc oned judge. Monetary awards will be presented to breeders who donated the top three pens/ cages as follows: 1 st place $75, 2 nd place $50, 3 rd place $25. Although there are no monetary awards for young started birds or chicks, they are a very important part of our auc on, par cularly for youth who need an opportunity to obtain birds from reputable breeders, and who may not be able to afford bid prices on adult birds. While this auc on will serve as a fund raiser for the PNPA, it will also give breeders an opportunity to gain some recogni on and publicity. Donated birds will be accompanied by an informa on form submi ed at the me of coop in. The related form will be displayed on the cage of the donated bird (a er judging, for adult birds) so that viewers may obtain breeder informa on prior to the auc on. Breeders are also invited to display their own sign and offer business cards (i.e. a card holder on the top of the cage). This Auc on is a statement about the PNPA s support for purchasing birds from reputable breeders, and will be a center of a rac on at our show. Please support this effort. Commit to a dona on by contac ng our coordinator, Anne Maloch at (360) or damhorses@yahoo.com. While we do not need to know which exact bird(s) you will be dona ng, we need an idea so that we have the appropriate pens & cages available at coop in. Quality Raffle Items Needed Do you like to go to garage sales or go treasure hun ng? Do you have a crea ve talent and enjoy making beau ful things? Do you know a local business that would be willing to donate their products or services to support a local organiza on? If the answer to any of these ques ons was yes then we would love to have you find or make one fantas c item to donate to the raffle at our upcoming show. Everyone always loves par cipa ng in the raffle AND it s a great fund raiser for the PNPA. So please donate an item to the next raffle and help us make it be er than ever! Ques ons or special arrangements need to be made to accommodate your dona on? Please contact Monica Harmon at or monica.harmon@ge.com
