2 INTRODUCTION According to the number of publications focused on camelids each year, we can consider that the interest of the international scientific community still exists. The trend is to a slight increasing of the scientific production since 25 years. However, the camelids studies are still quantitatively marginal compared to other ruminant species. This marginality is linked first to the low camelids stock (around 25 millions) compared to cattle for example (around 1300 millions heads), and to the limited geographical distribution of this species, the camel being associated specifically to desert or arid areas in the old world and the small camelids to the mountains of South America. Second, for funding agencies and main decision makers, camelids is rarely considered as a productive animal, but rather as an animal from the past, just interesting to walk in the desert or in mountains with the tourists. So, the scientific interest of camel appears to be low for many research institutes in the North and even in the southern countries. Yet, in the same time, camel farming has shown high ability to be adapted to intensification process for dairy and meat production and small camelids for high value wool. Elsewhere, camelids appear as a very interesting biological model for scientists in different field. At last, in the current climatic situation with high incertitude on the global changes, the place of the camel in desert ecosystem and of the small camelids in the high mountain ecosystem is quite important to evaluate their place in the future. The international scientific community must be aware to these trends, and the camel scientists, especially in the southern countries, contribute to the promotion of new scientific approaches. Aware of these challenges, the organizers of the present conference have chosen to promote camelids sciences and development under the umbrella of a new International Society as it exists already for other species. So, the present meeting is the opportunity to found the International Society of Camelids Research and Development (ISOCARD). The College of Food and Agriculture is please to take the initiative in organizing this event in hope that regular meetings in the future will ensure a perennial contact between camelids scientists in the world.

Conference language English will be the official language of the conference. Submission of Abstracts (Due date March 17, 2006) Abstracts must be submitted by only

5 Abstract requirements The author submitting the abstract is responsible for its content and quality of preparation. The scientific committee has the responsibility to accept or reject abstracts. Criteria for acceptance or rejection will include originality, clarity and merit. The number of presentations per person should be limited to two. Abstract in English and attached form should be used. Text typed in single space and font Time new roman 12. Please indicate your choice of presentation (oral or poster). Author notification Authors will be notified one week after receiving the abstracts stating acceptance or rejection of abstracts and reason for rejection. Presentation information Presentations should be based on original completed research not previously reported in research publications. Sound experimental design and interpretation are essential. Oral presentation Computers and data show will be available for presentations. Projected materials should include large fonts for easy reading. The usual scheduled time for presentation of each paper is minutes with 3 5 minutes for questions and discussion and speakers transition. Poster presentations Abstracts scheduled for presentation in poster sessions will be listed in the program and abstract book and published in the usual manner. Each poster presentation will be scheduled for public viewing for the entire session, and the author is to be available during a designated period for that session. All posters should be mounted on the board one-half hour prior to the beginning of the session. The poster board surface area is 200 centimeter wide and 240 centimeters high. The top of the poster space should include title of abstract, authors, and affiliation. Short and legible "Introduction" chart and "Summary or Conclusions" are helpful to attendee. Simple tables with minimal decimal points and attractive illustrations are recommended. Registration fee The registration fee is 100 US Dollars per person to cover the cost of printing the abstract book and CD, coffee breaks and lunch for two days and one dinner. Scientists who submit an abstract and present their abstract at the conference will not be charge and registration fee.

6 Visa The conference organizers will arrange visas for participants who required visas. A photo copy of the passport valid at least six months as of April, should be received no later than March 20, For more information please contact the organizing committee. Travel and accommodations The UAE University will provide local transportation for participants and accompanying persons at their arrival and departure airports. Hotel reservations should be arranged in advance by participants themselves or through the organizing committee. Currency The currency in the United Arab Emirate is "Dirham" (US $ = 3.68 UAE Dirham). Credit cards such as VISA, American Express, Master Card are widely used in hotels, big restaurants and shops.

The society is a non-political, non-religious and non profit organization of camelids scientists or similar scientific and professional associations ISOCARD objectives: Give international scientific status for camelids sciences Promote scientific publications in camelids fields Promote the contributions of scientists to the development of camelids farming Organise International camelids Conference every 3 years Encourage the exchange of information on camelids between members and different networks and involved organisations Establish and maintain relations with other organisations whose interests are related to the objectives of the society Membership The membership shall consist of: Camel scientists Associate members (Private companies, breeder association...).
