1 AALAS affiliate BETTER EDUCATION FOR BETTER SCIENCE COURSES AND SCIENTIFIC EVENTS 2018
2 THE FONDAZIONE GUIDO BERNARDINI IN BRIEF never stop learning The Fondazione Guido Bernardini (FGB) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the education and training of personnel involved in animal care and use. It is our firm belief that high standards of knowledge and competence in scientific and technical work go hand in hand with good quality research and with animal welfare as well. FGB is supported by the Scientific Committee (SC) that is composed of international, highly reputable experts in the field of laboratory animal science. The FGB SC enthusiastically oversees and contributes to the excellence of educational and scientific programmes. Training Faculty Connect, Engage and Growt your Knowledge The Training Faculty comprises renowned professionals with extensive experience in the laboratory animal sector including, LAS specialists, veterinarians, facility managers, engineers, architects and quality control managers, etc. The training team covers a variety of topics modulating the programmes through constant interaction with the participants. Workshops, Conferences and Seminars are held on timely subjects in laboratory animal science and technology attracting professionals who can find an ideal environment to exchange expertise, ideas and experience on issues of common interest. The speakers are renowned international experts that greatly contribute to the success of the events and enthusiastically support participants in enhancing and updating their knowledge. FGB courses strive to maintain high standards in teaching and include a variety of topics from which you can choose what best suits your needs. The subjects and contents of the courses are carefully selected to accomplish a specialistic training for the maintenance of competence and the continuing professional development of the participants. International students attending our educational activities benefit from small class sizes and have the opportunity to interact with fellow students and teachers in a productive learning environment. We are conscious that learning involves participation; the purposely limited number of attendees is functional to stimulate interaction, discussion and sharing of experience. We have also gained considerable experience in developing and performing tailored courses to meet specific needs. Each participant receives a certificate that attests the completion of a course or attendance to a scientific event. FGB training activities award continuing professional development (CPD) credits by the Institute of Animal Technology (IAT), the Royal Society of Biology and the Swiss State Veterinary Association. All professionals working with laboratory animals at various levels and with different roles can benefit from our training proposals. Facility Managers and Supervisor, Veterinarians, Technicians, Laboratory Biologists, Animal Welfare Officers, etc. are all invited to join our classes and participate into lively and interesting discussions.
3 THE FONDAZIONE GUIDO BERNARDINI TRAINING COURSES AND EVENTS January February March July August September Anesthesia for fish in aquaculture research Organizing and operating activities in a rodent animal facility April May June October November December Microbiota and gnotobiotic rodents The management of genetically altered rodent colonies Pathology of fish Microbiological monitoring of rodents: traditional and innovative approaches Course Anesthesia for fish in aquaculture research Bergen, Norway - March 6, 2018 Course Organizing and operating activities in a rodent animal facility Milan, Italy - March 14-16, 2018 Aquaculture, probably the fastest growing food-producing sector, now accounts for nearly 50 percent of the world s food fish. Research is necessary to assure a sustainable development of this business. Fish are vertebrate animals that should been given the same considerations to welfare and protection from harm as all other research animals. Anesthesia in fish can seem complicated as the fish live in water and they are poikiloterm with more complex metabolism adapted to surrounding temperature. We do not recognize facial or body expressions of pain as easily as in land living animals and their perception of pain can be difficult to evaluate. This course will focus on anesthesia of fish and research activities related to farm fish Registration fee: 200 NOK Research facilities play a significant role in ensuring that the scientific research is conducted in a safe, efficient and functional way. The main objective of this three-day course is to cover the most relevant aspects of the general functioning of laboratory animal facilities with particular attention to new technological developments, scientific needs of research and management concepts. The content of the course includes: layouts of the facility, functional areas, washing and decontamination, equipment and workflows, main procedures in clean and dirty areas, bio-containment and bio-exclusion. The definitions and technical solutions are also part of the programme together with health monitoring protocols. Colony management encompasses topics such as staff management, duty assignment and work scheduling and per diem calculation and attribution. The course subjects and the training environment aim to enhance the participants knowledge and to improve their skills on everyday activities. Recipients: Facility and unit managers and supervisors, manager assistants, designated and assistant veterinarians, senior animal technologists, quality assurance managers, persons responsible for overseeing the welfare and care of animals. Registration fee: 700euro + 22% VAT
4 THE FONDAZIONE GUIDO BERNARDINI TRAINING COURSES AND EVENTS Course Microbiota and gnotobiotic rodents Milan, Italy - April 12-13, 2018 Course Pathology of fish Leiden, NL - June 5-7, 2018 This two-day course is designed to provide the participants with the most recent information on the microbiota of laboratory rodents and on the use of gnotobiotic animals as experimental models. The programme of the course includes also topics related to the organization and management of facilities that breed and use such animals for research. The lectures of the renowned speakers will cover the interactions of microbiota with the host organism and, in particular, the impact on numerous aspects of animal normal physiology and on the development of many diseases. Cutting-edge information on breeding, maintenance and care of gnotobiotic rodent strains will be provided, including strategies to maintain and monitor the defined microbiota. In addition, the technological solutions available and the state of the art and prospective applications of gnotobiotic animals in research will be illustrated. Recipients: Heads of animal facilities, veterinarians, persons responsible for the health monitoring and testing of laboratory animals, senior technologists, researchers, quality assurance specialists. Course The management of genetically altered rodent colonies Milan, Italy - May 24-25, 2018 The course introduces important aspects of managing genetically altered (GA) strains of rodents for breeding and experimental usage. The distinguished speakers will provide the participants with theoretical and practical information on the maintenance of GA strains, breeding strategies, colony management, husbandry best practices and methods to securing genetic material according to the latest views. Animal welfare and ethical aspects will also be considered. The generation of GA rodents is not a prime subject of this course. A session of the scientific programme offers the participants the opportunity to present one or more cases from their practice; the interaction between speakers and attendees encourages the sharing of information and practical experiences from which the attendees can benefit to improve their competence in the daily work. Recipients: GM colony managers and coordinators, facility directors and supervisors, veterinarians, senior technicians, laboratory biologists, persons responsible for overseeing the welfare and care of animals. Yearly workshop series on Pathology of Laboratory Animals. Module 2: Pathology of fish The Fondazione Guido Bernardini (FGB) and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) are proud to present the international workshop on fish pathology. The workshop is primarily addressed to veterinary and medical pathologists, PhDs and laboratory animal veterinarians. Scientists aiming to obtain a broader and deeper knowledge on fish pathology will benefit from the workshop. The programme will cover fish diseases (viral, bacterial and parasitic) and toxicologic pathology of selected tissues. The participants will be able to present and discuss cases with renewed fish pathologists from leading research institutions. Gross pathology and histopathology sessions dedicated to veterinarians preparing for the ECLAM and ECVP boards will be included. Registration fee: 700 euro Course Microbiological monitoring of rodents: traditional and innovative approaches Milan, Italy - October 11-12, 2018 During this two-day course the participants are guided by expert instructors through the traditional, as well more innovative procedures (e.g., sentinels-free approach) for health monitoring, the interpretation of results and action plans in case of confirmed infection. The content of the course includes: traditional and emerging agents, relevant international guidelines, selection of laboratory techniques for health monitoring, including innovative techniques such as EAD-PCR, screening of incoming animals and biological samples, control of the macro- and micro-environment, disaster plan in case of confirmed infection. The influence of microbiota on animal models and monitoring techniques will also be discussed. Simulation of health monitoring schemes will be delivered through interactive theoretical sessions; a workshop will present a hypothetical scenario, with needs and limitations, providing the participants with the opportunity to developed their own programme with the support of the trainers Recipients: Facility managers and supervisors, veterinarians, senior technologists, laboratory technicians, quality assurance managers, persons responsible for overseeing the welfare and care of animals.
