1 January-April 2016 AWARDS BANQUET AND ANNUAL MEETING from Karen Anderson This year the awards banquet and the general meeting for election of new officers will be combined into one meeting on June 13, 7:00 PM. The location will be determined later and will be announced via the ABOCI list. In the meantime, Karen Anderson will be collecting your 2015 scores, plaques, and the club s perpetual trophies. Please get them to her by May 2 to allow scoring, engraving and proofing to be completed in time for the June meeting. Scores can be ed to Karen at kiadenune@gmail.com. Three options for plaque drop off: 1) Contact Karen to meet at the Allied Gardens Recreation Center on a Monday night. She lives in Tierrasanta in case that is more convenient ( , kiadenune@gmail.com). Karen will be unavailable by phone or April ) Give them to Audrey Austin. 3) Give them to Ken Miller after April 3. At the annual awards banquet we honor our members who have worked so hard with their dogs this past year. ABOCI presents Title Plaques to its qualifying members who have earned titles during the preceding calendar year. ABOCI also awards engraved Perpetual Trophies (Plaques) for a wide variety of High Scoring achievements and special accomplishments. DETAILS ON INDIVIDUAL PLAQUES FOR 2105 ACHIEVEMENTS The owner must be an ABOCI member in good standing (no outstanding debts to the club). If the dog already has a Title Plaque, an engraved plate will be added with new titles; otherwise a new plaque will be provided. Applicable titles: 1) Any American (AKC, UKC, ASCA) or foreign obedience title. These titles include OTCH, Tracking, Herding, Field, Nosework and Earthdog Titles, plus Front and Finish Platinum Award of Excellence. 2) Any American or foreign championship earned after an obedience or rally title has been earned 3) Any Flyball titles earned Information Needed for Plaques Your Name Call Name of Dog Title or Championship Earned Date of 3rd Leg or Final Points Declaration that you are a member in good standing. The high scoring ABOCI Perpetual Trophies are: Highest scoring dog in AKC Beginning Novice Highest scoring dog in AKC Novice Highest scoring dog in AKC Open (dog without a UD) Highest scoring purebred in AKC Open (dog with a UD) Highest scoring dog in AKC Utility Highest scoring dog in AKC Rally, Novice Highest scoring dog in AKC Rally, Advanced Highest scoring dog in AKC Rally, Excellent Highest scoring dog in UKC Rally, 1 Highest scoring dog in UKC Rally, 2 Highest scoring dog in UKC Rally, 3 Highest Scoring AKC Dog of the Year (Obedience) Highest Scoring UKC Dog of the Year (Obedience) High scoring awards are presented based on the information received. So get your information together and submit it even if your scores aren t high!! A lower scoring dog could win if we don t have your scores to compare. How To Submit for Perpetual High Score Trophies 1) Submit 3 scores from trials and 2 backup scores (5 scores total). These must be AKC trials (not Cycle events). DO NOT submit any more than your 5 HIGHEST SCORES! 2) Scores do not have to be from legs they can be earned after the title was finished, or can be from a combination of Open A and B if the dog is not yet a UD. 3) Scores must be from Memorial Trophy U-CD Z s Chase The Roses CD, WD, FDCH Memorial Trophy for High Scoring Dog completing an obedience title and a flyball title in the same year was dedicated by Jacquelyn and Donna Duffau. Donna is Audrey s daughter who was very active in the club and moved north a few years ago. Rosey was their flyball/obedience dog. This trophy is for the dog who completes an obedience title and a flyball title in the same year. If more than one dog meets the criteria for this trophy, the winner will be decided by the average of their three obedience scores. The scores and obedience title may be awarded from AKC, UKC, or ASCA. If the dog earns an obedience title from a non-scored event (CGC, for example), and a flyball title and is the only dog completing the two titles, that dog shall be the winner of the award. Any dog who earns an obedience title from a scored event (i.e. Novice, Open, or Utility) shall have preference over a dog receiving a title from a non-scored event. Highest Scoring within Breed Highest scoring dog within its breed in the nation (Delaney or Shuman system), 200 scores, and OTCH titles. Goofy as Hell from Bark Magazine by Ian Shoales The other day my daughter confided that she and her friends had that day engaged in an argument. one that s been raging, it seems, forever. They weren t discussing the origins of war, or why evil exists, or whether God exists, but a question just as troubling is Goofy a dog? My heart was warmed that these young people were confronting the same issues I d confronted when I was their age. How well I remember those youthful discourses.! Pluto is a dog that s a given. And yet Pluto cannot speak. Goofy appears to be a dog yet he possesses the power of

3 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE We have had problems in the past getting workers and new blood on the board. We have changed the bylaws to make it easier for club members to be involved. Now, we have one annual meeting in June. We will be giving the annual awards at this meeting. If you have accomplished a title in the past year, let Karen Anderson know. She is in charge of the annual awards this year. There will be more from her in this issue. We need new officers! I can't be president for life. I am a very poor president now since I have no ambition to lead and I guess I'm just burned out. The Vice President has resigned for health reasons. So, there is no V.P. at the moment. We need someone to step up to this job. We will need a secretary and I'm sure Sarah would not be sad to pass on the treasurer's job. She does it all and is great, but she also has been treasurer for life. Not fair. The V.P. job is mostly name only with very little official work. The secretary job also is very little work with only one meeting a year to take notes. I am pleading with you all to think about stepping up for the club. Another job that needs filling is the editor of Dog Daze. I used to love doing this, but again, burn out. It was my wake-up call when Eleni said I was M.I.A. She didn't say that, but she was right. I am M.I.A. I just can't think anymore. It isn't such a hard job and really fun. You don't need any writing talent. Just a will to learn and do. Many of our older members have disappeared but are still active in the sports. I think they disappeared because they have done so much for the club in the past, they felt it is someone else's turn. All you older members, please come back. There are jobs that could really improve the club and we could have fun again. We could look for a place to train that we wouldn't need fencing. There are possibilities. We just need you to come back and step up. There is the "what does the club have to offer for me?" I don't know. We offer many classes and we could offer more if we had the volunteers. A club can't offer anything if the members don't participate. I think I've said enough for this issue. I don't mean to nag. I just panic that time is flying by and we are standing still. Audrey Austin, President Goofy as Hell--- (Continued from page 2) speech. What s the deal here? Take a trip around Duckburg. See the Beagle Boys? They have shiny black noses like dogs, yet they walk just as men! Most of the citizens of Duckburg, as a matter of fact, are some kind of bizarre dog/human hybrid werewolves, if you will, or some ungodly mutant created by Gyro Gearloose in his fiendish laboratory. And who paid for it? I m not going to accuse anybody in print, but I will say that every time I see that miserly plutocrat Scrooge McDuck my blood runs cold. But let s not go there. Instead let s look at the larger picture. What are the Cartoon Rules of Dogs? 1. All cartoon dogs like bones. If they don t have bones, they scheme to take bones from others. 2. Cartoon dogs are always male. There are a few exceptions (Lady comes to mind), but if you look at the pantheon - Deputy Dawg, Tramp, Mighty Manfred, Snoopy, Foghorn Leghorn s nameless adversary, or the cast of All dogs go to Heaven they are always male. Female dogs only exist in cartoons so a male dog can howl, slaver, make his eyes bug out and get distracted by them, so some other 3 dog can steal his bone. 3. If a dog has a comfortable existence inside a warm, cozy house, some outside force will arrive to drive him into the yard where it s always pouring rain. This outside force is usually a cat. If a dog has a comfortable existence in his doghouse, some outside force is always trying to get him to leave it. This outside force can be represented by many things a mailman, a cat, a bird, even a rival dog trying to gain access to his bone. 4. In the cartoon universe, if a dog is the protagonist, a cat usually represents the force of evil and/or chaos, unless it s a cute little fuzzy kitten. Either way, the dog will be distracted from his bone. 5. Cartoon dogs can go from joy to rage in an instant, and back again. 6. A dog s personality is determined by its breed. Sheepdogs are loyal. Dobermans are fierce, St. Bernards are tenacious, Shepherds are protective, Chihuahuas are nervous, Poodles are vain, Bulldogs are irascible, Mutts are scrappy, etc. 7. If a dog is clever, he s usually not clever enough. If a dog is stupid, he usually perseveres he gets the bone in the end. 8. Dogs are never evil. They can be obsessive, but never self-absorbed 9. There are no cowardly dogs. If they re needed, cartoon dogs always come through. 10. In confrontations with cats, dogs usually lose. In the cartoon universe, mice and cats defeat dogs. I think these rules are pretty much written in stone, don t you? So what does that make Goofy? Well, he s a male, he is stupid and he s not evil. But does he like bones? No. Do cats give him a hard time? No. I have to stand by my original assessment, and I ve had a lifetime to think about it. I don t know what the hell Goofy is. He may even be part dog for all I know, but by and large I d have to say that Goofy is the unholy spawn of hell, an unnatural creature who should be destroyed while there s still time. But that s probably just me..

5 Brags, Brags & More Brags JOANNE GRIFFIN and LYRIC Westernesse Jammin Live Jazz UD OM1! Lyric won a 3 point Major and BOW(Best of Winners) towards her Conformation Championship at the Orange Empire Dog Club Show under judge Alane Gomez. Last week she won a Major Reserve at the Sahuaro State Kennel Club Show under judge Carl Gene Liepmann and she earned an NOHS Herding Group 1 under judge Del Richards. Lyric now has 18 OTCH Points, 6 UDX legs and she just earned her OM1 (Obedience Master) title and has 88 points towards her OM2. OTCH= Obedience Trial Champion OM= Obedience Master Title UDX= Utility Dog Excellent CATHERINE ZINSKY and DEVON... Moved Devon up from Open B to Utility B on Sunday in Phoenix (Lost Dutchman KC), and I m thrilled to say that my baby (he s only two!) placed 3rd in a highly competitive class with a fabulous score of 198!!!!! (Louise Meredith was first with a 199, Dax was second with a 198.5) Judge Laurella Pang was astonished that this was his first leg:-) He was a trooper. GLORIA LAUBE and RIPLEY Ripley earned his Rally Advanced title on February 20, He is now officially Ch. Belfair Believe It Or Not! BN, RA, CGC, and he has an Advanced Trick Dog title from Kyra Sundance/Do More With Your Dog. Gloria Laube Devon showed two days in conformation, taking Best Opposite each time. CATHERINE ZINSKY and DAX... Showed at the Sahuaro and Lost Dutchman trials in Phoenix with large classes (17 & 18 teams in UB & OB). Dax was a superstar! On Friday he was HIT ( 199 score) & HC under Judges Jill Jones and Susie Osburn, and on Sunday he was HIT with a from Judge Judi James. Had a runoff for HC, but we didn t win, sharing the glory with friend Louise Meredith. Waggin tails, Catherine SCOTTY MALONEY and BEAMER On Friday and Saturday of the Silver Bay KC weekend my Beamer and I earned two legs towards her Rally Advanced title. Beamer is my German Shepherd Dog who turned 9 years this past Valentine s Day. On Sunday I messed up and caused us to NQ. The judge on Sunday said Your 5

6 dog did fine. I am hoping to earn that 3rd leg (and her RA title) at the Del Sur KC trial. Scotty Maloney JOAN McADAM and RINNY Joan McAdam s Rinncon Diva Del Mar CD, RN aka Rinny completed her Rally Novice title at Silver Bay with placements all three days. She also received 2 legs in Preferred Open with a 3rd & 1st place!!! Not a bad weekend for a 10 year old Newfoundland! Joan Building drive through motivation is not a bribe. CATHY COLLEY and HAZY Hazy completed her Rally Advanced title on February 26 at the Obedience club of San Diego county trial. Hazy won Brags, Brags & More Brags Hazy, we love Rally!. CATHY COLLEY and WINDY Windy earned her AKC Rally Excellent title at the Labrador Retriever Club of San Diego s Rally Trial held at Bates Nut Farm on 2/21/2016. Windy finished up her last 2 legs at this show with a 3rd place on Saturday and a 2nd place on Sunday. Good girl Windy, Rally is fun! and WINDY again.. Windy took 1st Place in a Shoot to Retrieve held by the San Diego Sporting Dog Club in Jamul, CA. Windy and I entered the Amateur Retriever division, Publisher s note Once again I m apologizing for being late. This time I had a real excuse - not just work or life or anything like that. I had pneumonia and was pretty much incapacitated for about three weeks. I was really amazed at how much it sapped my strength. So - we have missed one issue this year already but I m ready and willing to try to get another one out sooner than normal. I know there are a lot more brags since there have been a lot of shows and trials recently. Start getting them together and we ll shoot for mid to end of May and get another issue out before the annual meeting in June. And don t forget to get your awards info to Karen.
