October 2010 AKC Communications Release... AWARDS FOR CANINE EXCELLENCE (ACE) In 1999, The American Kennel Club took action to express its time honored respect for the extraordinary canine-human bond, as well as its appreciation for the innumerable ways in which dogs meaningfully contribute to our lives. That initiative gave rise to the AKC Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE), which celebrated its first presentation year in To qualify, the dog is required to be AKC registered or an AKC recognized breed, and have performed some exemplary act, whether large or seemingly small, that has significantly benefited a community or individual. One award will be given every year in each of the following five categories: Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Therapy, Service, and Exemplary Companion Dog. When appropriate, dogs earning honorable mention will be selected. Each of the five honorees will receive a cash award of $1,000 and an engraved sterling-silver collar medallion to be presented at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. Their names will be engraved on a plaque that hangs permanently in the American Kennel Club Library in New York City. Dogs receiving honorable mention will be awarded an engraved bronze medallion. Be sure to read your address label! This could be YOUR last Dog Daze! Once a shelter dog and now trained for Search and Rescue work, Cassius and owner Peter have been deployed by or worked closely with many organizations, including the Bedford Stuyvesant Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Louisiana State EMS Boat Team Search and Rescue, and the United States Army Airborne. The two also served during Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina and in Haiti during the aftermath of the recent earthquake. While Peter performed paramedic work in Haiti, Cassius, also a certified Therapy dog, provided comfort to both victims and volunteers of the tragedy. The team received Congressional Commendations for their exceptional work. continued on page 2 Be sure to read your address label! This could be YOUR last Dog Daze!

Rufus performs equally as well in show ring as he does in the community he s the top-winning Bull Terrier of all time as well as the exceptional Therapy dog. Since retiring from the show ring, Rufus has spent countless hours spreading happiness and cheer at schools, senior citizen programs and nursing rehabilitation centers. He also received a special invitation to visit injured soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Service Dog: Wyatt owned by Janice Wolfe of Wyckoff, NJ. While most Service Dogs typically work with just one person, Wyatt, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, has worked with hundreds. His breeder/owner Janice Wolfe is the founder and director of Merlin s Kids, an organization that places dogs with autistic and developmentally disabled children. Wyatt s affinity for children and his remarkable patience allows Janice to determine if a Service dog is right for a particular child. Meeting Minutes, September 20, 2010 The meeting called to order by President David Smelser. July Minutes and notes from the August meeting were approved on a motion by Cathy Colley, seconded by Judy Ekdahl. Treasurer s Report: Sarah Ball reported the checking account has $ and the savings account has $ Eleni Stevens and Kathy Upton will check the list for those who paid 2010 dues. If you have not paid your dues this could be your last issue of Dog Daze. Training Director reports: Cathy Colley reported the CGC class was successful. The CGC test went smoothly and well. She had nine class members and eight were tested, With the increased interest in CGC Cathy is considering teaching a CGC class twice a year. We Law Enforcement Dog: Nike owned by Senior Corporal Mark Tobin, New Castle County Police of New Castle, DE. Nike, an 11-year old German Shepherd Dog, spent ten years serving the 500,00 citizens of New Castle County, Delaware, with his partner, Senior Corporal Mark Tobin. This decade of service resulted in 161 apprehensions and the seizure of 1.6 million dollars worth of drugs. Nike also used his tracking skills to find an Alzheimer s patient who had wandered away from home and a six-year boy lost in 97 degree heat, among many others. Exemplary Companion Dog: Ricochet owned by Judy Fridono of Escondido, Ca.. When Golden Retriever Ricochet was dropped from Service Dog training due to her distractible nature, owner Judy Fridono decided to focus their efforts on something Ricochet could do surf! This wave-loving Golden now surfs for charitable causes, and has raised more than $10,000 for a quadriplegic boy s rehab as well as funds to purchase toys for 630 children at hospitals and women s shelters during a Christmas toy drive. F should be thinking of life after CGC to offer a more advanced class. Old Business: There was quite a bit of discussion about Dog Daze. Motion made by Judy Eckdahl, seconded by Eleni Stevens to send a mass to all members inviting them to opt for getting Dog Daze electronically. Members can still get Dog Daze mailed if they chose. There are several ways to receive it electronically. Members without computers will have Dog Daze sent through the mail. Motion passed. Eleni made a motion to pay Kathy Upton $ a month to publish and distribute Dog Daze. Cathy Colley seconded. Motion passed. Judy moved to retroactively pay Kathy Upton for the August/ September issue. Sarah Ball seconded. Passed. 2

MINUTES: Continued from page 2 Sarah Ball moved and Cathy Colley seconded that Eleni buy software to run the website for $ ABOCI will pay $250 of it. Eleni will do the website for a year or more. If she does not work the website for a year she will reimburse the club for the difference. Motion passed. Motion for contribution for charitable donation was tabled to next month until more information on charitable organizations could be investigated. Motion made by Eleni and seconded by Cathy. ABOCI will hold a UKC obedience and rally trial April 9, Audrey Austin will chair and Sarah will be the secretary. Judy moved and Eleni seconded to hold two back to back rally trials. Passed. Eleni volunteered to work together with David Smelser as director of trainers. New Business: Cathy Colley suggested we could rent a storage container to keep at Allied Gardens for all the club equipment. This way no one person is transporting all the equipment. Any club member could set it up. Cathy will investigate the possibility with the Rec. Center and container costs. Meeting was adjourned at 8:19 Submitted by Audrey Austin, Secretary.F PROPOSAL FOR EQUIPMENT STORAGE Cathy Colley has been investigating the possibility of renting a storage container for ABOCI to keep our equipment on the grounds at Allied Gardens. We are the only Obedience Club in the regular San Diego County that promotes UKC obedience trials. Also, we are the only dog club of any kind, anywhere in the county, that does not have a storage container on site for their equipment. The container would be locked with a combination lock. Many of us could have the combination when the equipment was needed; those arriving early could get it out and set it up. Others, later, could take it down and put it away. Although it s tough to spend money as a club, this is very affordable. The park will let us keep the container on site for free. The monthly rental will be around $ Cathy has found a company with free drop off charge. If the equipment was on site, we could all use it on a weekly basis, with people rotating to set it up and take it down, and one person not being responsible for the whole job. We could probably get more people using the ring/jumps, and leave it set up longer. Rally equipment could be stored there as well and used every week. Puppy class equipment, flyball equipment, and possibly the trial equipment could be kept in it, depending on the size we are allowed. Also, for Show n Gos; one person would not have to stay from dawn till it s over, plus transport and store all the equipment. Downside: The cost, but the cost is worth it. Also, the container will be stored where the Rec Center tells us to, probably by the basket ball courts. We can use wheels to get the equipment to the grass. It isn t that far. Cathy will have to walk the grounds with Ruby and her boss, and find an appropriate place to place the container. In addition, we have to adhere to the smallest possible size, and agree to clean off any tagging that occurs. Cathy feels, and I agree, that if we don t do something like this, we will lose the small but valuable contingent of our Club, that promotes and participates in Obedience/Rally Trials. It is just unfair to expect one club member to store and transport equipment. Please come to the meeting. Give your opinion. And VOTE. Submitted by Audrey Austin F September Brags Maril & Chance Maril Suess came home from the Ridgeback national with blue ribbons everywhere. In Agility, her first time in the ring with Chance she wowed the crowd. Both Novice Standard and Novice Jumpers with weaves, Chance got perfect 100 scores. Maril has worked hard and long to accomplish this great feat and Chance loves agility. Besides dazzling the spectators with agility, Chance and Maril took home the blue ribbon in Open B Cathy & Windy Cathy Colley and Magicgold s Wind in the Willows, JH CGC, golden retriever, earned a leg at the Hunt Test, in the advanced level of Hunters Stake on Sunday, Sept. 19 th in Chino Hills, CA. Windy qualified at the Inland Valley Retriever Club s NAHRA Hunt Test, did a beautiful jog on her retrieves and trailing and made her owner proud! (Editor s note: trailing is tracking an injured bird. A bird is dragged some distance as if it were wounded and ran. The dog has to follow the trail and find the bird. No lost birds with Windy around.) Kathy & Rigel Under pressure, to make the CGC test count with enough entries, Kathy Upton entered Rigel at the Silver Bay KC match on 9/5/10 Rigel at 6.5 months of age was not truly trained for any of it. They went for it. During the sit stay and recall test, however, daddy Alan showed up after being absent for a couple hours (in the car) & baby brain 3 went bonkers. The judge gave Rigel a 2nd chance, and he finally found his baby brain and managed to do the exercise, passing his CGC. Hopefully it s just the first of many titles to come. The next ones, however, will be preceded by LOTS of training! It s much less embarrasing for the handler! Audrey, Handsome & Zazzy The dynamic duo, Handsome and Zazzy had a great time at the UKC agility trial. Handsome finished his AGII title with 2 second places. Zazzy flew around the AGI courses and come up with 4 first places, a perfect 200 score, and her AGI title. Also during the month, Zazzy collected her second leg in AKC Open Standard agility with a first place. Go Zazzy! F

CGC CLASS REPORT Hi members, We have just completed the 6 week CGC Class and Test for ABOCI. The class was a great success with 9 dog and handler teams, with dogs extra large to small in size. Club members passing the CGC Test: F Lynn Dowd and Max, Great Dane F Eleni Stevens and Ozzie, Standard Poodle F Jade Davis and Binky, Standard Poodle F Melissa Whipple and Yolo, American Indian Dog F Nancy Wooton and Panda, English Shepherd Non-club members passing the CGC Test: F Crystal Hakes and Lily, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel F Jim Hakes and Indy, Black Lab Congratulations and Kudos to all the teams that passed, and everyone in the class. Everyone worked hard and put in the time and effort to train their dogs. I had a lot of fun working with the dogs and their owners! Thanks so much to Audrey Austin and Handsome for your help with the CGC test. As a Club, we plan to offer the CGC class/test twice a year, spring and fall. We will also be offering CGC Tests for members in the upcoming months. Check the webpage for details as they come up. Cathy Colley RALLY RAMBLINGS, SEPTEMBER 2010 by Cathy Colley Hello Rally Enthusiasts! Well, October is upon us, and that means our local AKC Fall Obedience and Rally Trials are just around the corner! This year, we have 5 local AKC Trials to choose from this month. All these Trials are offering the new AKC Optional Titling Classes.and also, they are all offering Rally! This month, I would like to chat about a few basics concerning your Rally course, and navigating around the Rally ring with your dog. I will base all my info on the AKC rules. For other venues, (UKC, ASCA, etc.,) things should be very similar, but check your rule books to be sure! I am also referring to all the Rally Stations as signs, for the purpose of this column. When you enter an AKC class with your dog, you will receive a mailed confirmation of your entry one week before the show. This will show your armband number, your ring number, and the time your class will start. Be sure to arrive early, and check in with the table steward at your ring. You will be issued your armband, and placed on the ring list. While you are there, you can pick up a course map for your class. This will come in handy to look over, and practice any of the signs that will be on your course, before your class begins. Before the class starts, you will have 15 min. or more to walk the course. This is the time to get a good mental picture in your mind of how the course will flow when you and your dog are doing it. Walk the course as many times as you want to, within the time allowed. Make sure to ask the Judge any questions you may have, about how to perform any of the signs. The Judge is always available during walk through time, and they encourage questions and clarifications of signs. 4 When you are entered in a Rally class with your dog, you will hear very little in the way of conversation, or verbal commands, from your Judge! Instead, you are allowed unlimited communication with your dog. So right at the beginning, get your happy voice and attitude ready! You are allowed to speak freely to your dog, praise your dog, repeat commands, and any other creative things you can say to improve your dog s performance. The only exception is loud or harsh commands, which are intimidating, and not allowed. If you get nervous and yell or shout loudly at your dog, you will be penalized points, and could even be excused, so keep it happy! You are also allowed to pat your leg, clap your hands, encouraging your dog, in the Novice and Advanced Levels (not in the Excellent Level.) So take advantage of the chance to continued on page 5

RALLY: Continued from page 4 have a happy ring experience. However, don t purposely touch your dog, this is considered physically aiding the dog, and is not allowed. If your dog leans a little or you bump lightly into one another, don t worry about it! Most Rally judges are very considerate and they want you to have a good ring experience and succeed with your dog. Give the Judge a chance to see your best stuff, and to give you a nice high score! The Judge will (hopefully) greet you in a pleasant manner, and check your armband number on the clipboard. At this time, you will get your dog into position, just before the Start sign on the course. Take advantage of this moment to get your dog into a perfect heel position, paying attention to you, with your leash (in Novice) gathered up and placed properly in your hands. The Judge will ask, Are you ready? When you feel confident that you and your dog are properly positioned and comfortable, then say Yes! or Ready! At this time, the Judge will give you the ONLY command you will hear on the entire course. The Judge will simply say, Forward! And away you go. You are on your own to navigate the course, perform the signs properly, in the correct order, and keep your dog working happily! The most important thing to remember is to do the signs in order, and do not make any turns, or other moves, unless a sign has instructed you to do so. Remember that you are being judged the entire time you are in the ring, NOT just while you perform the signs. The Judge is looking mainly for teamwork, a sense of a smooth flowing performance where dog and handler are in sync. It is also a good idea to keep up a brisk pace during the entire course. If you need to move more slowly, that is fine too. Just remember that any tied scores are decided by the faster time. The main idea is not to dawdle along as if you are taking in the sights. Move smoothly, briskly, with a sense of purpose about what you are doing, confident in yourself and your dog. And remember: Keep the dog on your left, and the signs on your right! As you approach each sign, you should do the exercise in the general area parallel to the sign. That is, don t start performing the exercise as soon as you can read the words, and definitely don t wait until you are past the sign! Just approach the sign, get next to it, and do your flawless version of the move(s) required at that sign! When you have completed the move(s,) move briskly and confidently on to the next sign. Here s one exception to the sign on the right rule: When performing the Moving Side Step Right, (this sign may appear in Novice, Advanced, or Excellent,) you actually change direction and pass with the sign on the LEFT. The Moving Side Step Right sign is placed in the handler s path, so that when you approach it, you perform the Moving Side Step, to the right, before your reach the sign. This will cause you to pass by with the sign on your left, and in this one instance that s okay! (It is ALWAYS a good idea to check with the Judge on exactly how he/ she wants this one done: this little sign has caused a lot of discussion over the years!) A word about turns: When you perform a 360 Right, or 360 Left, you perform it like any other sign, with the sign next to you on your Right. You will make a little circle (to the left or right) while heeling along with your dog, then continue in the same direction so keep the sign on the right! All other turns, however, are performed IN FRONT of the sign. That is: Right Turn, Left Turn, About Turn Right, About U Turn, 270 Right, 270 Left, and Left About Turn, are all performed in front of the sign. These are changes of direction, and in order to keep the course flowing and heel towards the next sign properly, you will need to do the turn in front of the sign. This will become apparent as you start working on courses! Once you are past the Finish sign, your course is complete! This is a good time to be joyously happy with your dog, praise exuberantly, have a party! The Judge will most likely say Thank You, and you are free to leave the ring, and bask in the satisfaction of a job well done with your dog. Very shortly thereafter, your score will be posted on the white board outside the ring for your viewing pleasure. When all the participants in your class have had their turn, the Judge will tally up the scores, and call all the qualifying dogs back into the ring, including the 1st 4th placements. Hopefully you will experience the joy of accepting a green (qualifying) ribbon, or maybe even a placement in your class! Either way, you will be on your way to building a great relationship with your dog, and succeeding at one of the fastest growing, most popular dog sports in the country!
