We have found an excellent training director to replace Geri Dimeglio. Louisa Golden has stepped up and will bring not only dog training expertise, but also people training expertise, great wisdom, and forward-thinking ideas to our program. Louisa has been working with a a man who is interested in teaching ABOCI puppy classes: Greg Coler is in the process of joining the club and will hopefully offer a puppy class early in He s been training and working with Labradors in show and field for years and has crossed over to exclusively modern methods. Also, he recently retired as a banker and now has time to focus on training. Currently he is working with Emily Larlham as an apprentice and with Trish Penick doing canine water rehabilitation. He will be a great addition to our training team for as long as he is able to serve. Many thanks to Kate Palese and JoAnne Griffin for sending him our way. On the new location front, we are preparing to approach the management of a facility near the Allied Gardens Rec Center. We are finding that there are a lot of potential options for new locations, but there are not a lot of really great options for a variety of reasons. Some of the small neighborhood parks look promising, for example, but so far they don t seem to have restrooms. That could work if there are facilities within a few blocks. I will continue to keep you posted. President s Message on leash. I worked with a trainer who uses Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) to help dogs with reactivity issues. It s a process that has empowered her over time to choose more constructive responses when confronted with another dog while she s on leash. We now can often pass another dog who is walking across a residential street without lunging. This is huge progress for her since she was typically reactive at 100 yards or less. Please see pages 6-9 for an article by Grisha Stewart, explaining this training method - and here s a link to her book - I hope I get to see many of you at the ABOCI annual holiday gathering on December 9. Karen Anderson President kiadenune@gmail.com My dog, Sweet Pea, was becoming increasingly reactive to other dogs 2
Brags, Brags & More Brags SCOTTY MALONEY and BEAMER... and handlers. The course is basic with very forgiving. Lots of fun to get new people and green dogs started in agility. Then he passed his VST tracking title making him a Champion TrackerThis is one of the most difficult tracking titles to earn. I injured my back a few days before the test. Smash's and my good friend Steve Nytko took the line and in 90+heat followed Smash though the track to find 4 articles and earned this coveted title. Smash's dam also has a CT, which may be the only mother/son CT's. Abig thank you to the judges and my tracklayer. There would be no test without them. different venues he earns the triple crown award. Smash is a triple crown winner. I am so proud of him LONNI RUSKIN and ANNIE To touch people s lives through pets is the principle for Pet Prescription Team. It is an organization that serves San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles Counties. On Saturday, September 10 at the Santa Valley KC my Beamer qualified on her 3rd leg to earn her Rally Excellent title. She did this in 3 straight trials, so I am quite proud of her. The trial was indoors at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa and the Judge was Shirley Indelicato. Scotty & Beamer AUDREY AUSTIN and SMASH and DAZZLE. CT Flying D's Smash Hit ACT1 earned his first agility title. ACT is the AKC new title for beginning dogs CT Dazzlin's Full of Pizzazz VCD1,C D,BN,RX,MA,MAJ,NF,UCD,UAG1,UROA,NW1 l1v,l1e,l1i. has been enjoying her new nosework sport. She has earned the Nosework 1 title, and three of the four elements titles without any mistakes. She is an awesome dog. Audrey Austin AUDREY and SMASH score TRIPLE CROWN at the Chessie Nationals!!! Smash was my outstanding boy at the Chesapeake Nationals. He qualified in agility novice standard with a second place. Then he qualified in beginning novice with third place and qualified in novice rally. This was his first time in the ring in all trials. The Chessie Club offers a Triple Crown Challenge. If a dog qualifies three times in at least two 3 After training with the director here in San Diego, Annie and I became a certified therapy team. We have been visiting facilities once a week since late August. The work is so rewarding to both of us. We are looking for a few good handlers and their dogs to take the next training class. If you are interested please visit their website or Facebook page, and give them a call. Lonni Ruskin and Annie GERI ZUCKERMAN and CLOUD CH SEADREAM FLYING CLOUD... "Cloud"... demonstrated her aptitude for water work at the PWD Water Trials held at Callaway Gardens, Pine Valley,
Brags, Brags & More Brags Georgia. She earned her Jr Water Dog Certificate on her first attempt. There are no 'scores' at water trials (as in obedience)... only Pass/Fail. However, there are time limits established for each exercise that leave no time for 'foolishness'. Once the team enters the test area, the leash is surrendered and all exercises are performed "off-leash and under control." Of course, no food or toys are permitted in the test area. There are four exercises required at the Junior level: 1. Retrieve of a water bumper thrown a minimum of 25' from shore. Dog must wait until the bumper has been thrown successfully and the judge commands that the dog may be sent. The dog must enter the water promptly, retrieve and return with it to the handler. Time limit is 1 minute. 2. Board and ride boat with handler. Rough water is simulated by the rower and dog must remain on platform with handler. (Dog is never permitted 'in' the boat... always is on the platform at the stern). 3. Dog is left on shore. Handler (and steward/rower) go out a minimum of 60'. When called, dog enters water 'promptly', swims to, and boards the boat. 4. Dog and handler enter water together. When dog's swimming depth is reached, timing of 'the swim' begins. Dog must remain within arm's length of handler BUT not touch. (One accidental bump is permitted). When time is reached, dog and handler must exit the water together and under control. Now, on to the next levels: Apprentice, Working and Courier. Cloud's mother, "Keel", is a Courier Water Dog and her brother, "Polo", is a Working Water Dog. They, like me, are thrilled that the little wild child is on her way! Geri & Cloud CATHY COLLEY and Hazy Hazy completed her AKC Senior Hunter title on 9/25/2016, at the Sagehens Retriever Club AKC Hunting Test. We traveled north to Suisun City CA, back to Hazy s birthplace, for this test. Hazy did a wonderful job and worked with me beautifully throughout the day. One pass requires passing a morning test, being invited back for an afternoon test, and passing that also. Hazy needed 4 passes for the SH title. 4 We are having lots of fun in the field and I am very pleased with my good girl Hazy! Magicgold s Red Sky at Morning, RA, SH, WCX, CGC Cathy & Hazy JOANNE GRIFFIN and LYRIC Westernesse Jammin Live Jazz UDX OM1 CGC CGCA Owned and Trained by JoAnne Griffin DVM Lyric had a fantastic day at the San Diego Specialties yesterday!!! 5 CGCU on October 12, 2016 Louisa's Mollie and Cathy's Hazy both passed the CGCU. the Highest Combined Score with a 198 from Open B and she won the Utility B class and the Rally Novice B Class with a perfect score of 100 for her second leg! She also won the Open Sable and White Conformation class in both Specialties. Thank you judges Nancy Craig, Robert Kelly and Yvonne DeFreitas. She was a real trooper and never let down and gave it her all throughout the day in the 94 degree temperatures with first places in all of the 5 classes she entered! I am blessed to have such a wonderful teammate. Thank you Lyric! Louisa says: Both dogs did a very nice job and we enjoyed a lovely coffee with well behaved dogs at a cafe in Ocean Beach called Te Mana. This cafe is very special because dogs are allowed inside the structure for ordering. Cathy s husband, Steve, was a huge help. That extra pair of hands made things run much more smoothly. Thank you to him as well Cathy adds: Also wanted to give a shout out for Louisa Golden because she arranged all the meet ups for that group over the summer to get the dogs all practiced up on their urban skills. She did this for the Club members. She is wonderful! Is anybody surprised that we have a picture of Cathy and Hazy with their CGCU ribbon but we don't have one of Louisa and Mollie?????? 5
2014 Grisha Stewart, all rights reserved. EmpoweredAnimals.com/find-a-cbati Behavior Adjustment Training BAT helps animals gain confidence and social skills. 1 BAT is a natural method that creates an emotionally safe interaction with minimal intrusion. BAT is especially useful when the triggers for frustration, aggression, or fear are living beings, for example when dogs bark at or bite other dogs or people. BAT gives animals maximum control of safety and other significant events in their lives. BAT arranges safe scenarios where animals can socialize naturally and interact with triggers in socially acceptable ways. What to Practice Recall cue 2 BAT leash skills (see handout) practice wandering walks without a trigger BAT set-ups Survival Skills for real life, smaller spaces, or close up, including Mark & Move (see handout) BAT in Brief: Follow your dog on a loose leash. Any direction is okay, except for straight at the trigger. Tip: If he walks toward the helper in a focused way, slowly stop him. If you see any signs of increasing stress, call your dog away. Set-Ups are Dress rehearsals for Real Life: Your dog s major attitude shifts will happen when you do set-ups: rehearsals for your dog to practice healthy behavior. Specifically, set-ups are practice sessions with helpers dogs or people that would ordinarily trigger a bad response who are far enough away that your dog is not at all concerned. The ideal set-ups are like those potty walks where you follow your dog around, looking for the perfect spot. If you want your dog to be calm in real life, use set-ups to let him practice being calm! Set-ups give your dog maximum control within a safe, natural framework, like a lifeguard protecting swimmers at a beach. Good lifeguards keep things fun and safe by staying out of the way, but acting quickly when they need to set boundaries or rescue a swimmer. Such a lifeguard uses just the right level of intrusion to interrupt unsafe activities. BAT allows dogs to explore their environment. Intervene if and only if it is necessary. Watch carefully for signs of stress to maintain scenarios in which your dog feels safe. If the stress level goes above curious interest, encourage your dog to move on in the least intrusive way that works. Helpers: The right working distance from your helper may be across the street, the length of football field away, or even further at first. A good rule of thumb is to go about three times the distance at which your dog typically barks or double the distance at which your dog will not bark 1 BAT isn t just for dogs! It can also be used for other animals, including horses. 2 To get a really strong recall cue, follow the tips on the Emergency Recall in the Official Ahimsa Dog Training Manual. A clicker will also work in this situation. 6
2014 Grisha Stewart, all rights reserved. EmpoweredAnimals.com/find-a-cbati at the helper and will easily work for treats, whichever is greater. The helper should be allowed to act as naturally as possible, so that the dog can interact with the helper (at the right distance). If the helper is a dog, movement reduces stress. You may need to have the helper dog working for treats at some points, but not constantly, unless the helper or student dog needs that. What To Do: Your dog should walk around naturally, check things out, sniff, and occasionally look at the helper. Follow your dog around on a loose leash, but be ready to slow to a stop or even call your dog away if he gets too intensely focused on the helper. You can occasionally look at the helper and move a little toward the helper to encourage your dog to investigate that direction, but your dog should initiate most of the movement toward the helper. With BAT for dogs, we use a long line to help the dog feel free while still maintaining safety. See the Leash Skills handout for information and tips on safe and effective leash handling. The leash skills are fairly simple to learn and will make it more fun to walk your dog. Think of your dog s stress level as the water level on the beach. Let s say the water is dangerous today, with an undertow and sharks out in the water. The lifeguard allows people to stay on the beach, but prevents them from going in. Your dog can wander around the beach (no big interest in the helper), even occasionally approach the shoreline (show interest in the helper), but you will not let him step into the water (stressed, too focused on the helper). We want the dog to be curious about the helper, but not showing signs of fear, frustration, or aggression. Manage the activity and distance of the helper to keep your dog s stress level low. If you do that well, he will keep himself out of the water. You can just stay out of his way. This empowered exposure lets him learn that the helper is not a threat (even possibly fun) and that he can explore and move away. If your dog is used to interacting and needs a verbal connection to normalize the situation and keep his stress level low, calmly talk or pet him for a bit when he checks in. If you see your dog walk directly toward the helper at any point, think of that as reaching the shoreline. Slow your dog to a stop at the shoreline, giving him a chance to calm down, gather information, and decide what he wants to do next. After your dog comes to a full stop, relax the leash so that the leash makes a U-shape or smile between you and your dog. 3 This allows him to decide what to do next without added tension from your leash. When your dog is done looking at the helper, he will disengage, meaning that he turns away, stops focusing on the helper, etc. The most obvious behavior here is a head turn and a shift of his weight. Praise (optional) and follow him on a loose leash in whatever direction he goes, except for directly at the helper. If your dog immediately starts to go directly toward the helper again, he is too focused and needs his lifeguard, so call him back and try again from farther away. That s it, that s BAT done correctly! Everything else is just what to do if life isn t perfect. See the BAT Troubleshooting handout and/or work with a trainer who knows about BAT 2.0 before trying out your own BAT set-up. Find a Certified BAT Instructor using the link above. 3 See the BAT Leash Skills handout. Thanks to Claire Goyer, CBATI for the visual of the smiley leash. 2 7
2014 Grisha Stewart, all rights reserved. EmpoweredAnimals.com/find-a-cbati Tip: Film your sessions! Review your videos with your trainer for signs that you should make changes, like stopping sooner. Did you accidentally keep the leash tight? Stop him too quickly? Hold your breath? Think of these examples as the tide coming in, meaning you have to move farther away for the dog to easily handle the situation. The New Normal: To convince your dog s brain that these set-ups are real, do set-ups in different places with a variety of helpers over time. Include urban locations if your dog might experience that kind of environment. Also vary: whether you have food on you, whether you re talking, and even where your trainer is standing. Changing contexts helps prevent a relapse. Help your dog stay calm during walks to help the BAT set-ups take effect. The set-ups may seem slow at first, but each set-up should get you farther or take less time to comfortably get close, even with a new helper. At some point, you ll realize that your dog no longer needs set-ups. Doing BAT at the right pace pays off in terms of safety and fun in the long run. By paying attention and taking it slow, you will soon have a reliable way to communicate with your dog. 3 8
2014 Grisha Stewart, all rights reserved. EmpoweredAnimals.com/find-a-cbati Notes: 1. Moving straight at the trigger is not the only sign that the dog is at at the shoreline, but it s the most common. Complete avoidance is another sign, for example. 2. Instead of a recall cue for calling away, you can use Mark & Move (see Survival Skills handout). 4 9
