Dear Parents, We know how important your children are to you. We want to help you keep them safe. Please review with your children the ideas presented in this activity book. Listen to their questions and help them understand why these safety concepts are important. Practice will help them develop good safety habits. Reinforce positive behavior and take time to answer their questions. The most important thing you can do is set a good example. Children will often imitate what they see you do in spite of what you say. Show them how to be a safe pedestrian. Develop a family rule of always wearing seat belts. Show them your respect for the rules and laws which help to keep us all safer. The things you teach your children now may someday save their lives. 2

Hi, I am David. I take good care of myself by brushing my teeth, washing my face, and combing my hair, just like you do. All children under the age of four must ride in a car seat. It is important to make sure that the car seat fits the child and that it is properly installed in the vehicle Air bags save lives. Air bags were designed to work WITH seatbelts to prevent injury to an adult sized person. If air bags open in an crash, children in the front seat or in a car seat in the front seat may be seriously injured 3

Color the picture I m a helper. I set the table and pick up my toys. Best of all, I m a Buckle-Up Helper. I always buckle up my safety belt when I ride in the car. I help other people remember to buckle up too. 4

Being safe is important all the time! 5

The Buckle Up Pledge We care about kids and want you to be safe. The number one way children get hurt is in car crashes. But you can keep yourself safer by buckling up. Will you take the Buckle Up Pledge? I will buckle up every time I ride and I'll remind other people in the car to buckle up, too. * If you agree write YES here: * Tell someone about the pledge your made, who did you tell? * Recite the pledge to your 4-H club: date 10

Jennifer, do you want to go to the store with us? Her dad says she can. Yippee!! Jennifer is a fast runner. We re so glad you wanted to take a walk with us. Walking is great exercise you can go almost anywhere on your own two feet. Plus, it s free. But walking can also be dangerous. Safety tips for walkers: Always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk and you have to walk in the road, always walk FACING traffic, so you can see any car that might go out of control. Dress to be seen. Brightly colored clothing makes it easier for drivers to see you during the daytime. At night, you need to wear special reflective material on your shoes, cap or jacket to reflect the headlights of cars coming towards you. Tips for Crossing the Street. >Cross only at corners or marked crosswalks. >Stop at the curb, or the edge of the road. >Stop and look left, then right, then left again, before you step into the street. >If you see a car, wait until it goes by. Then look left, right and left again until no cars are coming. >If a car is parked where you are crossing, make sure there is no driver in the car. Then go to the edge of the car and look left-right-left until no cars are coming. Keep looking for cars while you are crossing, and remember, walk. Don t run. 12

October Is Fire Safety Month Do you know how fire safety week began? On October 8, 1871, over one hundred years ago, the whole city of Chicago was on fire! Late one night, when we were all in bed, Mrs. O'Leary lit a lantern in her shed. Her cow kicked it over, then winked her eye and said,"there'll be a hot time in the old town tonight" Popular song lyric. Do you think they knew about fire safety? At the end of the fire, there were no buildings left. Fire Safety Week began because people never wanted another whole city to burn. Come with me and we will learn how to be fire safe. In case of fire: The first thing you need to do is stay low and leave the building immediately! Don't stop to take anything with you. Never go back into a burning building. Call from a neighbor's house. Never attempt to put out a fire yourself, no matter how small it is! Here are some important fire safety rules. Never play with matches or lighters. Never handle gasoline or other liquids that burn. Always be careful around a stove, heater or open fire. Don't cook without an adult being present. If something catches on fire, get adult help or call or "O" for operator. Don't hang up until you are told to do so; listen for instructions. 13

Someone's clothes are on fire! If YOUR clothes catch on fire, "Stop, Drop and Roll!" If your friend's clothes catch on fire, don't let him or her run; yell, "Stop, Drop and Roll!" Once they are down and rolling, you can use a rug, blanket, towel, or other heavy cloth to help put out the flames on their clothes. Get adult help or call or "O" for operator. Don't hang up until you are told to do so; listen for instructions. Draw an Escape Route Back Door Front door Garage Write in the squares as close as you can, each room of your house and mark the smoke detectors. Make an X outside this house for your family s meeting place 14

Avoiding a Dog Attack Everyone should learn how to behave around dogs, especially children. Dogs are said to be man's best friend, but they do have the capacity to bite, and unfortunately children are sometimes the ones to get bitten. This can be avoided by some basic safety information. Basic Behavior: 1. Always ask the owner s permission before petting a dog. 2. Do not tease a dog or make loud noises around dogs. 3. Do not approach a dog that is eating, sleeping or caring for puppies. 4. Do not put your hand through a fence to pet a dog. 5. Do not play with dogs unless supervised by an adult. 6. Approach dogs slowly and carefully allowing them to sniff you first. 7. Never approach an unfamiliar dog and stay away for stray dogs. If you are attacked or threatened by a dog: Try to stand still and be calm. (Do not scream and run). Give the dog a book or backpack to chew on. Cover your head, neck, and face. Slowly back away. Do not turn your back on the dog. Avoid direct eye contact. If you fall down or are knocked over, curl into a ball, cover your head, and lie still. If you are bitten: Tell your parents immediately. Get medical treatment if necessary. Report all dog bites to Animal Control. 15

If you have any animals write there names here and what it is:
