Calendar 8 Announcements 8 Monroe County 4-H Contact Information Mary Cariola Children s Center Visit Smiles and giggles abounded on June 6th, as Monroe County 4-H members, leaders, and staff held their 2nd annual petting zoo at Mary Cariola Children s Center! This is the second year that Kathy Lee, leader of the Mary Cariola Busy Bees 4-H Club, has coordinated 4-H staff and volunteers to bring a petting zoo directly to the kids at MCCC. 4-H club members Anya K. and Clara W. and their families brought bunnies, chickens, a lamb, a goat, and Anya s canine pal Trooper. The kids from MCCC were thrilled to get a chance to pet and interact with the different animals. Special thanks to Barb H., 4-H members, and all of the volunteers for making this special day happen! The 4-H Pledge I pledge my HEAD to clearer thinking. I pledge my HEART to greater loyalty. I pledge my HANDS to larger service. I pledge my HEALTH to better living for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

2 Page 2 Monroe County 4-H Herald Gymkhana 2016 The Gymkhana Horse Show was held on June 18th at Mariah Meadows Farm in Spencerport. Congratulations to Sara M. Junior Champion; Erin Z. Junior Reserve Champion; Makayla L. Senior Champion; and Meghan C. Senior Reserve Champion! All of the participants did a fantastic job!

3 Monroe County 4-H Herald Page 3 New York State Fair Come to the New York State Fair! This year, the New York State Fair runs from Thursday, August 25 through Labor Day Monday, September 5. For 12 days, youth from around New York are invited to attend Fair as representatives of their county Cooperative Extension and 4-H offices. The 4-H Youth Building is located near Gate 4 close to Indian Village and the birthing barn. The Fair highlights the best of 4-H, positive youth development, and New York itself through a focus on agriculture and animal care, public presentations, renewable energy, health and fitness, robotics, teen leadership, and more! State Fair affords youth in 4-H with opportunities to display exhibits or offer presentations that demonstrate what they have learned, enhance individual learning and skill development, receive recognition or participate in invitationals based on county or district achievement, learn and recognize standards of quality, learn and apply research-based subject matter, promote public awareness of the 4-H Youth Development program, and have fun! Summer Camps! Make new friends while enjoying the great outdoors! 4-H Camp Wyomoco and 4-H Camp Bristol Hills both offer overnight and day camp options. 4 P a ge 4 Monroe County 4-H Dog Show M onroe County 4 -H Herald Are you a 4-H dog program participant looking to showcase your dog s fabulous manners and breathtaking agility? Then bring your pooch to the Monroe County 4-H Dog Show! The show is being held at the Monroe County Fair in Northhampton Park on Friday, August 5th at 3 pm. All registrations are due by Friday, July 22nd! DOG SHOW RULES AND REGULATIONS All Monroe County Fair 4-H Dog Show entries must be 4-H members. All classes are for dog program participants only, except Obstacle Course on Lead, Costume Class and Tricks class are open for all 4-Hers. However, the dogs entered in these classes should be trained by the youth and have completed at least one training course (8-10 sessions) with an "approved instructor." All exhibitors MUST bring their dog s rabies certificate with them to the Fair. All exhibitors are responsible for cleaning up after their own dog. Dog leashes for Beginner Novice exercises are to be 6 feet in length. All dogs in the obedience ring MUST wear a properly fitted collar. No special training collars such as electronic collars, prong collars or gentle leaders. Martingales are an acceptable collar. Nothing may be hanging from the dog s collar. 4-H Dog Show Dress Code is in effect for this show. NYS 4-H Dog Show rules are in effect for this show. The performance of the 4-H ers and their dogs will be scored according to standard score sheets. In general, American Kennel Club (AKC) rules will be used for obedience class evaluation. 6 P a ge 6 4-H STEM Programming M onroe County 4 -H Herald Matthew Trombley, Urban Fellow from the University of Rochester, started working with Monroe County 4-H on May 23 rd. He is collaborating with Tara this summer to support 4- H community STEM programming in Monroe County. Matt has served as both President and VP Internal for the Community Service Network on the University of Rochester campus; co-founder, President, and Vice President of GR Soccer (a student organization that teaches sexual health and empowerment through interactive learning); and the team manager for the Men s Club Hockey team. He is a Business Management major with a minor in ASL. As a leader with the Community Service Network, Matt is well poised to connect STEM-related CSN student groups with CCE long-term. Welcome, Matt! Matt Trombley The goal of the new 4-H STEM Summer program is to combat summer learning loss in the Rochester area. Our aim is to involve a minimum of 60 kids ranging from kindergarteners to middle schoolers at a variety of sites that come from differing backgrounds and schools. The program consists of fun, hands-on activities that promote experiential learning opportunities combined with thought -provoking ice-breaker activities and brief take-home assignments to continue the learning process. The lessons touch on subjects from friction relating to hovercrafts all the way to acid and base identification using red cabbage juice. We hope to use positive youth development through STEM education to help the kids grow into caring, contributing members of society!

7 P a ge 7 M onroe County 4 -H Herald STEM Activity: Fireworks in a Bottle! Fireworks may be a really fun way to celebrate the Fourth of July, but we know they are more than a little dangerous. The solution? Grab a friend and make your own liquid fireworks with this simple and safe alternative. It s time to celebrate with science! Ingredients: Cooking oil Water Food coloring Fork Small jar Large, wide mouth jar Instructions: Pour approximately a half cup of cooking oil in the small jar. Add about ten droplets of food coloring. Use multiple colors and be careful not to overdo it! Whisk the food coloring and oil mixture with a fork until the droplets are very small. Pour the mixture over water. Be patient and watch what unfolds. The droplets will sink and unveil colorful "fireworks!"

Maddie s Certificate of Recognition speaks volumes about Maddie and the positive influence that 4-H has had on her and that she, in turn, has had and continues to have on her peers! We re so proud of you, Maddie! Attention all Monroe County 4-Hers! Monroe County 4-H is planning their first ever Junior Iron Chef competition, tentatively scheduled for October 16 th, 2016! This competition, modeled after the television show Chopped, encourages teams of H members to create a healthy recipe using local foods, pantry staples, and their own creativity!
