1 I am exciting to be participating in the 2017 South Carolina Veterinary Association meeting. I have been training dogs in upstate South Carolina since My passion involves helping owners understand the ability of their dog to learn and, encouraging them to envision how a well trained dog can become a valued part of a family. I want to share what I know about the principles and techniques necessary to train all dogs, regardless of their personality and temperament. I know that trained dogs enrich the lives of their owners and families. Session I: New Puppies: Answering Owner s Concerns and Dealing with Playful Biting Many puppy s first excursion away from home is to their veterinarian s office. The puppy s socialization often starts in your waiting and exam rooms. I want to share some ideas that will help you comfort puppies in the exam room and, during your exam. Many new puppy owners do not know that their puppies can learn basic commands and respond appropriately at a very young age. I will provide you with information that you and your assistants can share with owners during the first visit to your office including common concerns such as housebreaking, crate training, and playful biting. Session II: The Untrained Adult or Rescue Setting an Owner on a Successful Path When dealing with dogs, we are often forced to choose between what we will manage, and what we will train. It is important for owners to understand that managing bad behavior is a short term solution. Training a dog to behave appropriately should and can be the long term goal. It s never too late. Using video, discussion, and demonstrations, I will also provide you with information that you can share with owners to motivate them to start training their dogs rather than just managing behaviors.

2 Session III: Problematic Behaviors including Aggression Many owners have dogs that exhibit serious behavior issues and do not realize that problem behaviors can be mitigated and sometimes eliminated with training that is easy and affordable. Instead, they struggle to make painful decisions to live with the problem, re home the dog, or in the worst cases, euthanize. My experience demonstrates that rehabilitation is often less complicated than owners believe. In this session, I will discuss the cycles of separation anxiety and aggression and share techniques that owners can use to avoid these problems. I will also explain the techniques we use at the Dog Trainers Workshop to address more serious problems. With the proper training, it is possible to turn what appears to be an anxious or aggressive dog into a good pet. 4 Connie Cleveland-Nolan Connie is an internationally recognized dog trainer and owner of the Dog Trainers Workshop a full service dog training and boarding facility near Greenville, South Carolina.
