SEPTEMBER 2015 ISSUE 163 The Parish Lunch will take place on Monday 7th September at the Robin Hood 12 noon for 12.15pm. If the regulars are unable to attend please contact Lyn Wooldridge on by Wednesday 2nd September at the latest, if possible. Anyone wishing to come for the first time is most welcome and should contact Lyn to book a meal. A very sincere and heartfelt thank you to those PCC ladies and friends who worked tirelessly and effectively to produce a delectable and delicious Summer Feast on Sunday 16th August in the newly decorated Village Hall - the perfect setting for special occasions. The money raised for St Andrew s Church exceeded 900 and was entirely due to the tremendous support of the guests who attended this event and to all those kind people who generously donated food, wine and fantastic raffle prizes. Thank you to all. DO YOU WANT TO LOOSE ALL OUR VILLAGE AMENITIES?!!! Despite requests in previous newsletters, i.e. April 2013 and February 2014 regarding parking in certain parts of the village, complaints are still being received, especially the areas outside the village shops and Reading Rooms. These were requested by the Parish Council for use by those using these facilities not for OVERNIGHT and ALL DAY PARKING. In both the previous newsletters alternative arrangements were mentioned. Please use these facilities if you are unable to park outside your premises.... THE FOLLOWING IS FROM THE HIGHWAY CODE: You MUST NOT part partially or wholly on the pavement in London, and should not do so elsewhere unless signs permit it. Parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments and people with prams and pushchairs. (Law/GL(G) A Sect 15. PLEASE CONSIDER YOUR FELLOW VILLAGERS 1

A NOTE FROM YOUR ASSISTANT PRIEST In our weekday service at Bainton this week, we had the wonderful Gospel reading from St Mark s Gospel about the little ones. This reading took me back to the Baptism I had conducted at Kirkburn in the service the previous Sunday. Forty adults and ten children came to our 10 am service and joined in with gusto. The little girl was 18 months old, usually I find this a difficult age for a baptism as a child of this age is old enough to know something strange is happening, but not old enough to understand anything of what is going on. Well, Isabelle took everything in her stride and with a lovely smile. She knew her mind no, she didn t want to give me a cuddle, so Mum held her over the font. But she was very taken with the water which she tested herself before the baptism (yes, it was the nice warm water that our considerate church wardens supply) and her main disappointment was only having the water poured on her forehead three times she said More, more! until I showed her how the water drained away. And then in the service we greeted each other warmly and turned from the first great sacrament that our Lord enjoined on us Go into all the world, baptising in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, to the second, the sharing of the bread and the wine Do this in remembrance of me. Yes, the little ones (for Isabelle had several little friends there) were very warmly welcomed into our Church. But when we think of little ones, it is clear that Jesus did not merely mean babies and young children, he means all who are demeaned or in need in our society. So the Church extends its welcome and solace to all who are ground down by grief, sickness and bereavement, all who are devalued by the powerful in our world. This is our work of prayer and action as Christians: valuing the homeless, the migrants, the outcasts for they show us who Jesus is. Let s join together in this work so that we can sing with Mary: God had brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; God has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. With love and prayers, Kate (Revd Canon Kate Goulder, Woldsburn Benefice) 4

WOULDN T IT BE GREAT IF DOGS CLEARED UP AFTER THEMSELVES?? BUT IT S UP TO YOU Please clean up after your dog 5

Do you see irresponsible dog owners walk on after their dog has fouled? Stop them damaging your reputation and report them to us in confidence: Dog Warden Service (1482) Where possible please tell us: (a) (b) (c) (d) Location of fouling Time and date of the fouling Name and address of dog owner Description of dog To request removal of dog faeces on the street please call (01482) EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE COUNCIL 6

Community Access Defibrillator The Automated External Defibrillator has now been installed inside the cabinet on the wall outside the Reading Rooms. In cases of emergency when the ambulance service has been called and a heart attack is suspected, the lock combination will be given to the caller so the defibrillator can be accessed. The sooner a defibrillator can be used after a heart attack has occurred the better the outcome for the patient. The defibrillator adds to the service provided by the Ambulance Service and the First Responders group in the village but means that if the ambulance is delayed the patient could be receiving possibly life saving treatment. The Parish Council wish to Thank the HEY Smile Foundation, funded by Help for Health and East Riding of Yorkshire Council for grants for the cost of the equipment and Orchard Electrical Services for carrying out the installation work. The Middleton First Responders group is always looking for more volunteers contact Chris Brent (219469) for more information. Rural Health Checks The rural health bus will be visiting Middleton in October (date to be finalised) so look out for posters/leaflets in the village as appointments need to be made. The service offers health checks to anyone aged who has not been diagnosed with one of these conditions: heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and certain types of dementia. Citizen Link Portal East Riding of Yorkshire Council has recently notified the Parish Council that it is going to withdraw the services provided by the Citizen Link building, situated on Station Road, over the course of the next few months. There are several reasons for this, the main one being the low utilisation of the Citizen Link portals due to other forms of accessibility to the Council s services, via the internet, phone, etc. In addition, due to changes in technology the Council is unable to continue to support the original software installed within the premises. The IT equipment is to be disconnected and removed from the building. The building will then be offered to the Parish Council either to lease or buy if a suitable use can be found. If not ERYC will dispose of the building and make good the site. The matter will be discussed at the next Parish Council meeting on 7 th September. Do you have any suggestions for a suitable use for the building? Please give your suggestions to a Parish Councillor or the Parish Clerk before the meeting or attend in person. Parish Councillors Required There are still 3 vacancies for new Councillors to join the Parish Council, if you have a couple of hours a month to spare to attend meetings and steer future developments in Middleton over the next few years please contact the Parish Clerk by pc@middletononthewolds.co.uk or speak to one of the council members for more information. 8 Quarry Visit Saturday 8 th August Twelve people attended the invitation to the Middleton Chalk pit which was kindly extended by the owners Simpson Quarries Ltd. We were graced with very good weather and were given a tour of the quarry by James Harvey the Manager and Chris who were both very informative and helpful. There is a high bund along the side facing The Paddocks which has been erected to help minimise the noise disturbance. We were shown the areas being quarried, the area being infilled and the work being carried out to re-cycle concrete and rubble. Some of us went to the bottom of the original quarry and were able to have a look at the chalk strata. It was a very interesting and informative visit and we would like to extend our thanks to our hosts. Tina Walker. THE DOG POO CHALLENGE VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO CREATE CLEANER ENVIRONMENT East Riding of Yorkshire Council s dog warden team are looking for volunteers to help them create a cleaner environment. Volunteers would be given training by the dog wardens on the dog fouling law and would help by challenging those dog walkers who fail to clean up after their pets. They would also be able to hand out information about responsible dog ownership as well as understanding what evidence is required in order for a 75 fixed penalty notice to be issued. Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for community involvement and local partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: Dog fouling is a major issue and while most dog walkers are responsible and do clean up the mess left by their pets, there are some that don t. The East Riding is a vast area and our dog wardens can t be everywhere which is why we are asking for the help of the public. Those who do come forward will be given all the information and confidence they need to challenge those who are seen to be not cleaning up the mess left by their dogs while being able to give out information about responsible dog ownership. We would really like fellow dog walkers to come forward and help us create a cleaner environment but will consider volunteers from any walks of life. For more details ring East Riding of Yorkshire Council s Dog Warden Team on (01482) or dog.warden@eastriding.gov.uk 8

The Shepherd s Life: A Tale of the Lake District by James Rebanks was our book for August. A bit different to our usual novels, it is an autobiography by a sheep farmer taking you through a year s work on the farm and from lamb to sheep ready to show at local fairs. It tells of his life from being a rebellious schoolboy, through life at Oxford University to how he now divides his time between working for UNESCO, writing and shepherding. All in all an interesting read. Tuesday 8 September 2pm June Pratt, 12 Station road Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey Tuesday 13 October 2pm Lyn Dennis, 4 The Paddocks Daughter by Jane Shemilt Contact Lyn Dennis LynDennis@btinternet.com Jennifer Keenan pajkeenan@gmail.com Just a quick mention about the gentle exercise and games get together on Thursday afternoons in the village hall (1.30 to 3.00pm). After a short warm-up of exercises to music we get out some of the equipment which we have managed to buy with a grant from the ERYC. It may be bowling, kurling, skittles, crossbows, or golf putting, usually played in teams but for fun rather than being competitive. Then to finish off we have a cup of tea and a biscuit while doing a quiz or playing a table game. It s a way to meet people and socialise as well as being good for body and soul!! Everyone is welcome - we are there every Thursday so just turn up and give it a try.
