4 President s Message Hello Golden Friends, We have had a good start to our year. our first meeting at Gander Mountain was well attended. Our featured speaker, Dr. Frank Capella, was a great beginning to out year as he informed and updated us about the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. this study is so important to us and for our incredible Goldens. I wish more of you could have been there. It will help to identify factors and risks involved with the cancers as well as other diseases that afflict our Goldens. It will also carry over to other breeds and possibly humans too. It is the largest and most comprehensive observational study ever attempted in veterinary medicine in the United States, Dr. Capella explained over 3,000 Goldens, known as hero dogs, are enrolled including some from our own club (Murphy hero #1351 and Popcorn hero #2587 both followed by Dr. Capella). Our amazing breed is leading this vital research. they just never stop giving and we thank them. [Note: Dr. Capella supplied us with some handouts if you are interested and/or you can learn more by looking up The Morris Animal Foundation s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study] We were also entertained and informed about our first Golden activity - Field - by the very accomplished Maxine Clark. Many thanks to both Maxine and Dr. Capella. We learned a lot. In April, we held a successful CCA although there were some tense moments during the entry phase. Our co-chairs Beth Greenfield and Wendy and Bob Richardson did a fantastic job. Thank you to them and to all of our volunteers, including several first-timers, for your valuable and most appreciated contributions to make this event such a good day. As we celebrate spring, our field Golden teams had their first day out at Pam Fuller s. Maxine is on top of this and has scheduled many other dates so join in whether you are brand new to field or an experienced trainer. Maxine has been working hard to negotiate some new challenges this year and we also need to thank Joe, Todd and Gary for representing us at the Sporting Dogs Coalition. I want to thank you for your support, suggestions, guidance and ideas. I love your input; this club is for all of us. Many have communicated topics/speakers of interest and I am considering all of your suggestions - keep them coming. I think we have a great line up of professionals so far. Some of you have expressed an interest in a grooming class/seminar which I hope can come to fruition this year. And, a club brochure has also been suggested which is now in its infancy. Expect to see it soon and feel free to contribute. Finally, I hope meet even more of you at our next meeting in June. Come early and enjoy a snack. Then learn about canine chiropractic care from our featured speaker, Dr. Deanna Rodriguez (also a Golden owner) and another Golden activity. Please also consider inviting another Golden owner or lover of Goldens. Let s keep our club strong! Best to all, Carol Krehel (and Murphy too) 4 Golden Tales -May Golden Retriever Club of Central NY

7 2017 GRCA NATIONAL SPECIALTY by Sallie Lennox Looking for something to do? Looking to spend a few days enjoying goldens, seeing a part of the country that maybe you have never seen before, trying new restaurants, meeting new friends or getting together with old friends, and doing some volunteering during your visit? And all the opportunities to participate in wonderful daily raffles. Are you aware that the site of the GRCA National Specialty rotates from east coast region, to central region, to the west coast region? Last year it was in California and this year it is being held on Maryland s beautiful Eastern Shore. Salisbury, MD will have conformation, obedience, agility, and rally. In nearby Maryland and Delaware will be the field events. The dates are from September 22 through September 30, This year it is being hosted by Potomac Valley Golden Retriever Club. It takes about 3 years of behind the scenes work to host a National Specialty. The host club depends on the generosity and support from other GRCA member clubs(such as GRCCNY) financially or with volunteering to assist. If you have never attended a National Specialty, this is your chance since it is about a 6 to 7 hour drive away. It won t get much closer. You will be in awe at the sight of thousands of goldens congregated for this week-long event. There are seminars, workshops, and social events to attend if you wish. Or you can just sit and watch the beautiful dogs compete. The rescue parade takes place on September 29, as does the annual GRCA membership meeting. All GRCA members are encouraged to attend the annual meeting. Best of Breed takes place on September 30. Please look over the website for the Nationals at: You should find answers to most of your questions there. And if you want to sign up to volunteer for something, you can do that too. I personally have volunteered for many National Specialties and it is a rewarding way to help out. If you decide to attend, I would recommend that you get hotel reservations soon. This is a huge event and, if history repeats itself, it will the largest breed specific National Specialty again. Again, the drive from the Syracuse area is between 6 to 7 hours. Even though our focus will be on all the goldens, why not make it a mini vacation and do some exploring of the surrounding area. The Chesapeake Bay area is supposed to be beautiful, with an abundance of restaurants to visit. Hope to see many of our club members in attendance and/or participating with their dogs. Woof, woof. 8 In the field--- by Maxine Clark It s that time of year again. Time to shake off the dust and head to the field for some training with your best friend. Weather??? Always nice out in the field!! (might be an over statement this year.) Our first training of the year was April 29th at Pam Fullers in Hamilton. In spite of a small turn-out we had a great day. All eight dogs attending did awesome and left with tails wagging. So why not come join us, we have a very friendly, helpful group.no prior knowledge is needed, we will do our best to encourage and guide you. Your dog will thank you!! What do we do training days? We try to do a drill that can be done at different levels for each dog[a teaching of a skill] and then head out to the field to set up 2 or 3 marks and a blind. We use bumpers and/or birds. It is nice to have a recall on your dog but the retrieve can be taught. A mark is something [bird or bumper] thrown for your dog to retrieve. Blinds?? A much more advanced skill to be taught at a much later date. We do this set-up on land and again on water. We train for AKC titles Junior Hunter[JH] and Senior Hunter[SH] and for our GRCA titles WC and WCX. And the bonus is we have a wonderful time doing it and so does our dog! This has been a challenging year to come up with a schedule for training due to the loss of the use of Three Rivers WMA. Fortunately we have members willing to allow us to use fields and ponds. A huge THANK YOU to Pam Fuller, Carol Lantiegne and the Martins. Our next training day is May 13th at Pam Fullers. We start at 10 and hope to see you there! Can t make that one? Put May 21st on your calendar we will be at Echoewood in Mexico. Bone feathers Capt Carl s 67 Tpl Crown CGC CCA earned his CD and RN titles at the SLVDC trials.
