4 The Carol Allen Award Waynewoods You re Got a Friend by Kelly Mueller Eleven years ago my life was very different and in the bucket you could say. It was a time when Carol came back into life my life and she didn t even know it. I was in the hospital for ten days.during this time Carol came to Hospital with her golden at that time. I m not sure if Carol even realized that I had been a GRCCNY member nine years earlier. I lost who I was. I was Joe s wife and Joseph, Hannah, and Samuel s mom, but not Kelly. By seeing Carol with her dog I knew what I was missing in my life- my life with dogs. Now don t get me wrong. I had a wonderful family and golden retriever, Indian Acres Guided Spirit (Tatum) but she was a family dog. I didn t do much with her because I was always running with three children. When I got out of the hospital I did spend more time with Tatum but a year later she passed on. I wanted a new golden so badly that Nov. of 2007 I went to the dog show and talked to some breeders. I met the Bessey s. A lot about their lives was similar to mine. In April 2008 I received a call saying the litter was born. I had wanted a female but there were not enough those so I decided a male would work because I couldn t wait any longer. June of 2008 changed my life. I went to Buffalo and picked up this little puppy who looked like he put a paw in a light socket. I had never seen such a puff ball. That day I seemed to find a little bit of confidence by having this little guy remind me of the things I love besides my family. JT (short for James Taylor) taught me to take time for myself. JT and I would hike and walk everyday. Then we started going to SOTC and joined GRCCNY. He is my sidekick who has caused me to come out of my shell. JT has one title and he may never have more but every day is an adventure with him. He is my needed child who wants an arm on him all the time. He lives for swimming, chuck it balls, and treats. I have taken him to hotels that allow only dogs up to 25 pounds. JT is my travel buddy for my trips to see family in Connecticut. He is always good for a laugh when someone hasn t put food away, like cupcakes for a bake sale or carrot cake for Thanksgiving dinner. He will always have a special place for Sallie and Anne too. My big guy is now 8.5 years and a little slower and I worry about him because he has a thyroid issue and I know the 5 years of meds can cause other problems, but so far so good. 5 The Carol Allen Award continued from page 4 time of his life. I m not sure if we will enter a race but it s my one on one time with JT. He has learned to share his home with Lyla my 5 year old golden, Jack my son s 4 year old Keeshond / Golden cross and his least favorite, Betsy, my daughter s 4 year old English Cocker who wants to be boss. JT is always there for me if I m having a bad day. He has helped me find myself again and enjoy life to the fullest. He has lived up to the name I gave him that June 8.5 years ago. Winter, spring summer or fall all you have to do is call and I will be there for you, You re got a friend. The Golden Member Award In 1995 this Gentle Man joined GRCCNY. In the early years he was always at Fun Days demonstrating the field abilities of the Golden Retriever. Always with a soft hand and fairness in training he has been a wonderful example to all of us in the field. He has stepped up and judged our WC/WCX and put on a spring training seminar for us. He is ALWAYS the first to volunteer to work at our WC/WCX spending the entire day doing any job we need done. He is a pleasure to work with and a huge asset to our field program. 10 26th annual WC/WCX Our 26th annual WC/WCX was held on September 25th at thebeautiful Echoewood in Mexico, NY.Meeting the many challenges to get this done this year proves what a strong club we havewith great working members. Unable to find judges Kathy McCloskey and myself stepped in to judge leaving the jobs of Chairman and Secretary vacant. With no hesitation Pam Fuller and Lynn McKinkle filled those vacancies, and what a great job they did.thanks to both of them!! The day arrived with the sun shining and the dog and handler teams eager to show what they could do. As always Ray Blaskiewiz was there early to catch ducks---even catching a few extras that belonged to Carol. [Thanks Carol for being understanding] Todd Clickner arrived with his dog and gun to help Kevin Crinklaw at the gun station. And what a great turnout of club members coming to help. Pam did an awesome job of getting the jobs done. Thanks to Kelly and Joe Mueller who came to throw birds and to Diane Hunter who came dressed in the best white outfit to throw. Members helping when they are not running dogs need a special thank you. Odette Fetzner came to help set up on Saturday, Jill Nicholas delivered lunch and Dottie Hamblin made our special cookies. Thank you Pam for recruiting these awesome helpers. Many club members earned titles. WC s were given to Lynn McKinkle,Sue Ruess,, Kathy Salemi, and Ann Lynn. And of course the other half of these teams, the dogs.
