1 A registered non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization Published monthly by Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies n the last newsletter, I wrote about how grateful I am for all of GRRR s good fortune at a time when others are struggling. Our good fortune is more than just financial. All of you fabulous volunteers have made GRRR the exceptional rescue it is today. Of course money is important, which is why I gave you the heads up about Colorado Gives Day. And once again, you and many others came through in a big way. With your help we surpassed to our wild and crazy Colorado Gives Day goal, with a total of about $105,000 from nearly 400 individual donors. This means so much to so many of our special-needs Goldens I ve been writing about in the past weeks. Just one look at these pictures of Zoey and Violet will warm your hearts. A greatful Zoey Violet before Violet after So thank you for your donations, and even more for your time and your love. Please know that all of us humans and dogs appreciate all you do!
2 o Ho Ho! I hope you are all ready for the craziness that sometimes comes with the season. In all of that craziness, however, please take time to be thankful for the wonderful things in your life. Of course, we are always thankful for our sweet pooches, but there are many things we don t slow down to appreciate as we tick off days on our calendars. I am thankful for all of you who support us, whether financially, by volunteering, or even simply with encouragement. A little over four years ago, we barely had enough in the checking account for payroll. Of course, all dog expenses and needs came first, then bills, and then we decided if we had enough to meet payroll. Hard to believe, but quite true. At that time, we lived and died by the outcome of the gala. We came off a tough year and it all caught up to us in October of that year. The Halloween party and fundraiser sparked a significant turnaround. That was followed by one of many successful Colorado Gives Day outcomes. We have tried to make really smart decisions. The dogs still always come first, but we have changed how we do events, facility investments, and implemented online fundraisers throughout the year to help smooth out the financials. And, our galas just took on a life of their own with wonderful guest speakers, sold-out events, and VERY generous support from you all. We still consider each dollar spent as if it s the last dusty, wrinkled dollar in our wallet, but we have been in awe of the extreme generosity that has allowed us to continue to meet the growing medical needs of the dogs that come to us, and has also allowed us to make property improvements without killing our budget or drawing down on our general operating funds. Heck, we even had a real bathroom built this year LOL. We ve received grants that have allowed us to replace the leaky roof on the house, cover our kennels, add a sound wall so we could be good neighbors and help muffle the sounds of the furry but noisy cheerleaders in the kennels. We (all of us) should be very proud of the professional and fun organization that has been developed over 22 years with more dedicated volunteers than can be counted. So simply, thank you on behalf of the humans, both furry and otherwise.
3 here are no words to describe the absolute joy that Reagan (aka Andy) has brought to our hearts and home since we adopted him on August 11th of this year. It brings tears to my eyes to think how heartbroken we were to lose our Golden Retriever Donovan at age thirteen. Then, along came GRRR and our sweet boy Reagan! The love and joy this beautiful Golden mix from Texas has brought to our hearts is beyond what words can describe. The love and caring that your GRRR employees and volunteers have for these precious animals speaks volumes about your organization. Thanks GRRR for all you do and for your loving dedication to our furry friends. Your work enables families like ours to once again experience joy and love for a very special Golden, one who, through no fault of his own, has fallen upon hard times and loss. ust about one month ago, I took a chance on this sweet boy. It had been exactly three months since I lost my Rosie, and I decided to once again open up my heart and home to a new friend. Those first few days were rough; it was obvious that he had experienced abusive treatment and he frequently shook and flattened himself in fear, to the point that I called him Pancake Man. I had to carry him up and down the stairs and in and out of the car. Through a steady diet of love, kindness, exercise, and gentle exposure to new people, places, and dogs, his confidence is rapidly growing, and he s becoming a loving, happy companion. I ve decided to name him Samson for several reasons. First, I named the Turkey Dog I sponsored this summer Delilah, but I also think the name fits because someone who wasn t very nice took away his strength. Unlike the biblical Samson, he s gradually gaining it back. Finally, I ve always liked the Grateful Dead tune Samson and Delilah. So, here we are, me and my formerly sad, broken, but rapidly healing little warrior, Samson. I m looking forward to sharing a long, happy, adventurous life with him.
4 BERNIE, Mr. APRIL 2018 Dear Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies Folks: On July 10th, 2016 Bernie bounded out of the GRRR office, into our car and into our hearts forever. As a stray, we didn t know much about his past, but he carries a few clues that things may not have been as rosy as the Forever Life he has come to enjoy. But when it comes to survival.... Don t bet against Bernie! On Saturday, October 14th, I went downstairs to take Bernie out for his 7:00 AM neighborhood exploration, only to find that he could not stand up. Carol and I got him back into the same car and rushed him to Aspen Meadow Veterinary Specialists. The emergency staff eased his pain and evaluated the situation. By Monday, we had the bad news and the C word. Tuesday Bernie went in for surgery with the warning that if the cancer had spread, we should leave him on the table..... But don t bet against Bernie! The surgery was a success and the Chemotherapy is going well. Bernie is fetching and swimming and loving everyone once again. Thanks to a wonderful oncology surgical team, we have our kid back. As long as his quality of life is as good as it is, he will continue to bring us and others the joy we have come to embrace. donate-golden-retriever-rescuerockies/purchase-grrr-calendar We would like to thank you wonderful people at GRRR for choosing Bernie as Mr. April for your 2018 calendar. You can see by his photo what a character he is. We will cherish the calendar, but never change the month from April. (Note: he autographed it) It would be against all odds for Bernie to make it to see his namesake month, but then again.... Don t bet against Bernie! All our Thanks, Clark & Carol Myers RRR is honored to be the selected charity at this year s Jackalope Artisan Market event at McNichols Event Center. Think of it as an indoor artisan hand-crafted gift boutique. On Saturday December 9th and Sunday December 10th, GRRR will be attending the Jackalope Artisan Market event at McNichols event center (144 West Colfax Ave in Denver) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come check out three floors of unique, Colorado-designed, hand-crafted gifts for your holiday shopping pleasure. GRRR will have a table on the first floor, and you will find several GRRR dogs, with owners in tow, wandering around all three floors of this unique Colorado event. It s like an indoor Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Just in time for you to buy holiday gifts while meeting the artist and designers. GRRR will be the beneficiary from donations, doggie begging vest contributions, and profits from the third-floor bar area. So come on out and say hello and fill your Santa gift list.
