1 A registered non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization Published monthly by Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies o, you may be wondering what is the Colorado Combined Campaign (or CCC)? It is a workplace campaign where Colorado government employees can donate via payroll deduction, cash, check, or credit card to charities that benefit Coloradans. Since we had an official audit of our financial records, GRRR is now one of the 700 charities throughout the state that state employees to can choose to donate to. The Sloan s Lake 5K run/walk was the kickoff for this year s campaign. It was a really fun day, with a good turnout by volunteers and perfect weather (as you can see by the pictures). As usual, we were a big hit with our beautiful Goldens, and the dogs were the magnet to our booth. We had many runners and visitors stop by during the event. I want to thank all of you who came out with your doggies. I know that they all slept well that night, especially those who decided to take a dip in the lake along the race route! What a wonderful opportunity for GRRR! The potential donations to GRRR from this event could have far-reaching effects. The event chairperson has already invited GRRR back for next year and told us that some companies may be contacting us when their open enrollment happens. We would then have a table at those companies with a Golden or two. Then who could resist donating to us? Do I smell a 5K? The Gang

3 he VIP Team is excited to announce another training session in September. Carole McMurry, owner of Peebody Dog Training, will share her 20-plus years of training expertise with us. The training will be held at Phoebe's Place on Sunday, September 29 from 1 3 pm. This is a great opportunity for the VIP Team to gain more insight into the dogs we work with when we volunteer. Topics will include: safely getting in and out of the run, proper slip-collar placement, loose-lead walking, dog body language, introducing two dogs and much more valuable information. Training is not mandatory but is highly recommended for all volunteers. Please contact Sukie McMaster at sukie.mcmaster@gmail.com to sign up. We have a wonderful dedicated group of volunteers who show up every day to spend time with these wonderful dogs. Thank you to everyone who shares their love.

4 Volunteer Coordinator Position Open We're looking for a new Volunteer Coordinator, and a few co-coordinators as well. Nancy Briggs was doing an awesome job but took a full-time job in LA and is moving (those pesky real jobs always get in the way). We're happy for her but sad for losing such talent. So, what we need is someone to contact all new applicants to get them rolling, someone computer savvy, personable, and someone who can come to GRRR events and get to know the volunteers. It takes about 5-7 hours a week, depending on the number of new apps. We're also looking for co-coordinators, and the positions aren't fully defined but someone who can do volunteer mentoring and volunteer appreciation, and fill in for the volunteer coordinator calling new applicants when they're on vacation. We're also looking for someone to maintain a volunteer database to be able to match skill set with jobs needing to be done. If you're interested in any position, please contact Deb Kneale at debkneale@gmail.com or phone her at Volunteer Training We'll be having volunteer training next month for all new volunteers or any of you who might not be new, but haven't done any volunteering yet and want to get involved. FOSTER Training - Sunday, Sept 15, 10am - 1pm at Phoebe's Place. For any volunteers who want to foster (current foster volunteers need not attend). We'll give you more info on what fostering is like, along with training and medical tips. Snacks included. No dogs please. NEW VOLUNTEER Training - Saturday Sept am - 2pm. For all new volunteers on any team, especially the Special Events Team. Get more info on GRRR, what we do, and a tour of Phoebe's Place. No dogs please. Please RSVP to debkneale@gmail.com if you're coming.

6 Bite GRRR Peebody Dog Training Teaching you to teach your dog Carole McMurry 720/ Bite Hold Dogs at Phoebe s Place From time to time you ll visit Phoebe s Place and see a Bite Hold on a run gate. I felt this was the appropriate time to elaborate on this topic as we have a dog right now with a bite hold on him. Depending on the bite circumstances and the local animal control policies, a biting animal may be confined at the local animal shelter, a private kennel, veterinary clinic, or the owner s home. A GRRR- dog owner would likely call Mary Kenton directly for guidance and to discuss the circumstances. Either way, Mary would make the decision to quarantine the dog at Phoebe s Place (although not a common occurrence, she does prefer to do this for GRRR dogs). Mandatory Post- Bite Quarantine Domestic dogs, cats, or ferrets involved in a human bite must be quarantined for a 10- day observation period to eliminate the risk of rabies virus transmission. This period is determined from studies demonstrating that rabies virus appears in the animal s saliva as clinical symptoms of rabies appear. Animals that remain alive and healthy 10 days post- bite would not have been shedding rabies virus in their salvia, and therefore would not have been infectious at the time of the bite. Not only is the dog observed for the above signs of rabies, I am also observing the dog behaviorally. Both Mary and I will get the dog out to exercise and work with him. This is done when no one else is around to reduce the risk factor. It is a matter of public safety and health and is taken very seriously. It doesn t mean that after 10 days the dog can be taken out what it means is that he is still being worked with. I want you all to know that, although a dog has bitten, it doesn t make him a bad dog. You cannot cure a biting dog, but you can prevent it from happening again. Please feel free to speak to the dog when you are over at Phoebe s Place and give him a biscuit. Should there be any growling (which he hasn t exhibited thus far); I ask that you don t look him in the eye. No one should be going into a run that is marked Bite Hold.
