4 Dear CVC Members: I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying this summer with your Vizslas! Our club has had a successful 2010! Many more exciting events are planned for the remainder of the year. In June, we held our Annual Vizsla Fun Day at Strawberry Hill Farm in Thurmont MD. We had more than 100 attendees, a lot of participation in the events/tests/ seminars and an awesome pork BBQ lunch! Several dogs passed for portions of their Versatility certificates, and several others were able to learn more about show, field and agility. A huge Thank You to all of our volunteers and judges - you made it a successful event! Photos from the event can be found on page 15. In July, we held our Annual Specialty and Supported Entry. There was a large entry, with many beautiful Vizslas! Congratulations to the winners, and Thank You to all who entered and supported our Specialty! The event was chaired by Stephanie Estes, along with a hardworking committee. Thank You to all the workers! Details from the event start on page 5. The 2010 Nominating Committee has been hard at work making selections for the 2011 Nominations to the Board. If you are interested in serving on the CVC 2011 Board of Directors, please CVC Treasurer s Report inform the NC Chairman Mike Moore by ing him at mmlvmoore@verizon.net. Coming October 1st-3rd is our Annual Fall Field Trial at Clear Springs MD. A premium will be posted to our website by mid- August. There will be a brand new trophy awarded to the winner of the Hunting Dog Championship in honor and memory of Linda Pruitt's Hunter! We welcome all, especially hunters and hunt testers, to come try your hand (paw?) at winning this fabulous new travelling trophy! Later this coming fall and winter, we will also have a hunt test, and our Christmas Party! Check our website this Fall for details. In this issue, you will find that we are providing our membership with a club financial report, so you may see P&L of various aspects of club operations. We appreciate your membership and continued support of the Conestoga Vizsla Club! Lastly, I would like to say a public Thank You to India Fuller Cox for developing and editing THIS, our club s newsletter! She has been in this position for a couple of years now and has done a fantastic job at getting these beautiful, informative newsletters to our membership. Another Thank You goes to our reliable webmaster, David Roseman, for continuing to maintain our club s website and getting information posted quickly! Stay cool this summer, and hope to see you at an event sometime soon! 5 2010 CVC Specialty Report by Britt Jung The Conestoga Vizsla Club s 2010 Specialty Show and Supported Entry was a success, thanks to commitments from the Show Committee and many others who pitched in over the weekend. We moved to a new building this year, which was bigger than our building from the previous two years. We lost our bathrooms, but also lost the traffic that came with those bathrooms! The four-day cluster, held in Bel Alton, Maryland, was well attended with entrants from as far north as upstate New York and as far south as South Carolina and Tennessee. Almost 75 dogs were entered on Saturday, the day of the specialty. Pat Hudson invited the owners of dogs from our Rescue Program to participate in a special parade that took place before Best of Breed judging. It was a really nice way to recognize these owners and their dogs, and invite them into the community. This was the first year that Select awards have been available to the judge to award. Judges may award one Select award to a dog and one Select award to a bitch in the Best of Breed competition, exclusive of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. Dogs that are awarded the Select award receive points toward their Grand Championship. While the Select award is an AKC award, the club can offer Awards of Merit. The judge may choose to award a dog both an Award of Merit and a Select award or elect not to combine the awards. You can find more information on earning a Grand Championship on the AKC web site. The traveling trophy, offered by Liz Sherman and Joe Mitchell to the Best of Breed winner, has been retired, after being won three times by the same owner. Look for that story in this issue! Thanks to the show committee for all their work: Richard Black, Gail Contreras, Susan DellaPenta, Stephanie Estes, Melissa Green, Britt Jung and Rachel Romano Kelly. A huge round of applause to Rachel for the magnificent job she did with the raffle! See her report for more details. Thanks to Melissa for coordinating the hospitality and to everyone who contributed to making the luncheon so pleasant and inviting. Lots of people hung around after the show to eat and chat. Thanks to Emma Black for handing out the participation toys to every exhibitor as he or she left the show ring. Thanks also to Kelly Park, Dot Romano, Beth Kirven and Stephanie Estes for helping set up and organize the trophies. I m sure many people haven t been mentioned who should have been, so thanks to you and to those of you who asked if you could help out and to those of you who simply said thanks. The event was a success because we had such a great team. Please consider how you can help next year. If you have ideas about how to improve or enhance the Specialty, or want to help, please contact a CVC Board member. These events cannot happen without all kinds of support. Here are the results. 8 BEST IN SHOW VIZSLA RETIRES BETHWOOD O n July 3, 2010, at the Conestoga Vizsla Club Specialty Show at Southern Maryland Kennel Club, CH ARTISAN GROUSE POINT PINK PANTHER JH (Kato), owned by Corinne Miklos, Sue Lonabaugh, Robin Bernstein and Joan Toepke, bred by Mark and Joan Toepke, went on from Best of Breed to win Best in Show. The BOB win was the third time one of Kato's owners, Corinne Miklos, had won the CVC Specialty, and this win retired the Bethwood Challenge Trophy. The trophy has been awarded each year for the past 12 years to Best of Breed at the CVC Specialty. Winners were entitled to hold the trophy until the following specialty show or until won by the same owner three times. In addition to Kato's win, CH Grouse Point Semper Fi Bougainville (Eve), co-owned and co-bred by Corinne and Terry Lucas, was BOB in both the 1998 and 2001 CVC Specialty Shows. Kato, this year's winner, epitomizes the product of quality breeding programs. Not only did his grandmother, Eve, win the trophy twice, but his great grandmother, CH Grouse Point Semper Fi Chu Lai JH, owned by Corinne and Terry and bred by Corinne, won BOB at the CVC Specialty Show in 1996, 2 years before the trophy was created. His half sister, CH Artisan Moonstruck Beauty, also out of Eve's daughter, CH Grouspt Semprfi Vorosakapink, owned by Mark and Joan Toepke and bred by Corinne and Terry, won in And Eve was sired by a dog from the kennel Szizlin that had produced three previous winners of the trophy including two wins with the same dog. In 1998, the Bethwood Challenge Trophy, a large pewter bowl to be engraved with the winners' names, was first offered by Joe Mitchell and Liz Sherman to honor long time CVC club members Horace and Betty Woodlief who bred and showed Vizslas for decades. The Woodlief's Bethwood kennel name can be found in many of our CVC dogs. Horace loved to study pedigrees, and Betty loved to show the dogs they produced. Their foundation stock served them well over the years: their first stud dog, Glen Cottage CHALLENGE TROPHY Red Baron, a litter mate to CH Glen Cottage Loki Barat CDX ROM, was a CH Puerco Pete Barat son; their other original stud dog, CH Broc Bey of Bethwood, a Puerco Pete grandson and a full brother to CH Gold-N-Rust Daring Gambler, was a Group winner in the early '70's when a Group win for a Vizsla was rare. Not only does Broc's brother Gambler appear multiple times in every pedigree of the winners of the Bethwood Challenge trophy, but the Bethwood name, going back to both Red Baron and Broc, appears in the pedigree of two of the recent trophy winners, CH Double Gun's K-80 Katie in 2006, and, in 2009, CH Kezdet's Grand Mark Gedeon JH. Barbara Clements, Horace and Betty's daughter, and a long time member of CVC, was at the show when Kato retired the trophy and was very pleased that a CVC dog had won it. We congratulate Corinne for this win and congratulate Corinne and Terry for producing such terrific dogs throughout the years. Kato s Grandmother, Eve, winning Best of Breed at the 1998 CVC Specialty. (L to R): Terry Lucas, Judge Mary Ann Alston and Julia Bonar, handler. CVC Newsletter ~ 2nd Quarter 2010 / 8

16 Kennel Names ~ Sampling of How Some Were Named Hodag Ray an Caroll Mealy Our kennel name is HODAG. Ray and I chose that name nearly 40 years ago when we registered our first dog a Basset named Sampson. When completing the AKC registration, we wanted a special name to front Sampson. After much thought, we decided on HODAG after the folkloric animal from my hometown of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. In 1893 newspapers reported the discovery of a Hodag in Rhinelander. It had the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end. The reports were instigated by well-known Wisconsin timber cruiser and prankster Eugene Shepard, who rounded up a group of local people to capture the animal. A photograph of the remains of the charred beast was released to the media. It was "the fiercest, strangest, most frightening monster ever to set razor sharp claws on the earth. It became extinct after its main food source, all white bulldogs, became scarce in the area. The Hodag became the official symbol of Rhinelander, is the mascot of Rhinelander High School, and lends its name to numerous area businesses and organizations. We soon became involved in field trialing Bassett hounds, with all of our Bassets carrying Hodag as part of their registered name. Several of our Bassets earned AKC field championship titles. Then in the early 1970 s, we bought our first Vizsla because Ray wanted a birddog. This was Hodag s SemperFi Roscoe. Here we are in 2010 after several basset hounds, English Setters and Vizsla earning numerous AKC field, show and obedience titles, with all having had that Hodag. The license plate on the old burgundy Suburban that we used for field events is HODAG, too nothing else would do. Willorunn Dot Romano Well, way back in time we lived on Long Island where there were many Willow trees which we loved and my Dad s (Rachel s Grandpa) name was Willy, so we combined that and added run spelling it a little quirky to match our personalities and Wahlah...Willo Runn. We made it one word when Mary and I named Lili (Quailpoint Willorunn Ruffian). This year, we made it a registered kennel name: Willorunn, reg. As for naming dogs, we look at their temperament or running style and try to fit a name to them using some part of the sire and/or dam s name and see if it fits them. Lots of times it s Ralph, the silent partner, who names them. This past litter was the first time we ever used a theme (Christmas), but being born on Christmas Eve kind of cemented that. CVC Newsletter ~ 2nd Quarter 2010 / 16 Dobrocat Vizslas Don Brown Dobrocat Vizslas is an acronym for Don Brown Catskill Vizslas. It is where I started with Vizslas 48 years ago. I use themes for all of my litters. There are just too many Pink Girl and Blue Boy s out there when describing puppies. Because all of my puppies are so very special to me, I like to get a name on them right away. At the end of their eight weeks with me, they all respond to their name when I call them. When I lived in the Catskills, I named puppies after all the high peaks of the mountains there. Since moving to Virginia, I choose a theme based upon a mood that hits me at the time the litter is born. One litter was close to Robert Burn s (famous Scotsman) birthday, so that litter had all Scottish names. One litter had Shakespearean names. The last litter was born from parents with Celtic names (Sean X Siobhan), so the theme was Celtic: Seanna God is Gracious; Angus Unique strength; Connor Much wanted; Brady Broad shoulders; Dillon Faithful; Enya Little Fire; and Flynn Heir to the redheaded. Brittania Britt Jung My mother bred several litters in the 70s, working with the late Max Holland. She never used a kennel name however. So when I bred my first litter from my first show dog (and the first litter where I chose the breeding [I was 16]), I figured I needed a kennel name. We lived on the water, just down the street from the Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut. When the puppies were almost 8 weeks old, my mother suggested Brittania, and I took it! I hated the idea of having my own name in a kennel name, but now, when I recall raising puppies in the yard where I grew up, on the river, watching occasional sailboats go by, Brittania evokes an image I don t want to forget. 17 Dorratz Doris Ratzlaff Dorratz Ramriver Beethoven, our first Dorratz male, was named so because we lived on the Ramapo River (Ramriver). My son was studying piano at the time and was playing Beethoven in the whelping room River Run Gail and Glenn Contreras Driving north on the George Washington Parkway one day with my friend Sarah, we passed Windy Run. I thought Windy Run might be a good kennel name and then thought again. That was when River, taken from Luna s name of Moon River, and Run, for Emma s name of Ready to Run, floated into my head and stuck. It seemed very appropriate. Sassafras Vizslas Rich, Melina and Emma Black As for the kennel name, our story is pretty simple. At the time we were choosing a kennel name, Emma had just received a book about a fancy poodle named Sassafras. She liked the book so much, Emma suggested we use Sassafras Vizslas. Melina and I both liked the sound of the name because we thought Sassafras had a playful, exuberant sound to it much like a Vizsla s personality. Plus, both Melina and I have ties to the Sassafras River on the Eastern Shore near where Melina s parents live. So, it seemed perfect! Grouse Point Corinne Miklos I live in Pennsylvania and the state bird is the Ruffed Grouse. My husband and his brothers used to do a lot of Grouse hunting so Grouse Point was the obvious choice. Broad Run Vizslas Michelle and Patrick Dowd Our kennel name, Broad Run Vizslas, is taken mostly from the name of a field and stream where our first Vizsla, Zeke, loved to hunt, swim and play. It is also a play on words and has two meanings. Our foundation bitch, Broad Run Blaze, came to live with us as an older puppy in Spring She didn't have a registered name yet, and her breeder told us to name her whatever we wanted. She was sweet as pie, a wonderful puppy inside the home, and lived up to the breed s nickname of Velcro Vizsla. But when we took her to the field, we saw a different dog. She ran HUGE, and she ran FAR! We had never seen a Vizsla puppy run like that, and decided that Broad Run was really fitting! Blaze went on to produce three very nice litters, 22 get, who all carry the Broad Run prefix. She is retired and spayed now. And at almost 9 years of age, she keeps her brood, son Boone and daughter Luna, in check... teaching them all the things life has taught her. She is still one heck of a hunter, particularly with managing the groundhog pests on our property. Her name and sweet temperament will carry on in future generations. Patriot Vizslas Susan DellaPenta and John Kochensparger At the time we were thinking about a kennel name, we were living in Hanover County, and Patrick Henry had lived and worked just a couple of miles from our house. Not only are we both interested in history, we are also both Army veterans, and John is also a former Alexandria police officer. The Patriot name fits the way we feel about our country. So that is why we have Ch Renaissance Patriot Crusader, also known as Patrick Henry as the beginning of Patriot Vizslas. Victory Fire Vizslas India and Bill Cox Victory Fire Vizslas is named in honor of Belle s Victory Fire. Although she is my fourth Vizsla (first V came from a pet store in Macon GA in 1975!), she is the one that got me involved in field trialing, hunting tests and Vizsla organizations. The Victory represents her dam s side of her pedigree (FC Amber Victory at Obertakt) and Fire represents her sire (FC Rimfire s Cool Hand Luke). Belle is because she is such a funny ding-a-ding! Almost 9, she continues to run big and hunt hard! I continued the Belle name with my Master Hunter, Dobrocat s CG Mira Belle MH. Her son is Victory Fire s Remek. Editor s Note: These vignettes are presented in the order in which they were received. If you would like to share the story of how your kennel came to be, send it to india1405@verizon.net, and it will appear in the next CVC newsletter. 18 What Does the Vet Say? Q: What should I be cautious about in the summertime? Hyperthermia (Heat Stroke) The most preventable, quickly fatal issue problem in the summertime is hyperthermia, or heat stroke. When a dog is left outside on a hot day, his body can accumulate excess heat. Due to the insulation of his fur and reduced ability to sweat, his body temperature can quickly rise. A core temperature of over 106 degrees is harmful and permanent brain damage can occur over 110 degrees. To prevent heat stroke on hot summer days, limit time outside to small increments. Once a dog begins to pant excessively or looks restless, it s time to come inside. When outside, limit work or active play. Provide plenty of opportunity to rest in the shade or wade in a cool water source. Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. Never leave your pet unattended in a car, even for a short time. When running errands, just leave her at home. If you find your pet collapsed and panting after excessive exposure to heat, get to a veterinarian immediately. In the meantime, apply cool water all over the dog s body. Do not use ice or very cold water because it can cause peripheral blood vessels to contact, insulating the heat inside the body. You can also apply rubbing alcohol to the foot pads allowing the evaporation to remove more heat. Snake Bites Dr. Watts and Otis We also see more snake bites in the summertime. Most are from non-poisonous snakes. The poisonous snakes in the mid-atlantic region are all pit vipers that use a toxin that causes localized tissue destruction. They are much less dangerous than neurotoxic snakes like cobras or coral snakes. Even so, a bite can be dangerous or even fatal depending on the location of the bite and sensitivity of the dog. After a bite there are two priorities. The first is to keep the toxin from spreading as much as possible. To reduce the spread of the toxin, use an ice pack on the area if your dog will let you. Stay calm to try to keep your pet calm. If your dog is small enough to carry, avoid having him walk around as much as practical. The second priority is to get to a veterinarian right away. Do not give any medications at home without a veterinarian s instructions. Some over-the-counter medications can actually worsen the effects of the venom. Rabies Veterinarians also see more cases of rabies in the summer. Keep your dog s vaccine current and avoid contact with wildlife whenever possible. After being bitten by a wild animal, a dog should always see a veterinarian. The preexposure rabies vaccine is designed to be boosted after a bite. Leptospirosis Summertime is also peak season for leptospirosis infections, a cause of sudden kidney and/or liver failure. If your dog will spend time in or around natural water sources, or will have regular exposure to wildlife or livestock, ask your veterinarian about vaccination against leptospirosis. Ear Infections Ear infections also increase at this time of year. I recommend using an acidifying, drying solution after any swimming or bathing. In the warm weather, it is probably wise to clean your dog s ears at least every other week to prevent infection and detect changes early. Tick Control Finally, tick control is important all year, but there are more species of ticks biting dogs in the summer months than at any time of the year. Consult your veterinarian about an effective tick prevention strategy for your pet. Thank you for your interest in this column. I encourage you to submit questions at WattsDVM@yahoo.com. I will answer as many questions as possible in future editions. 20 County Geese Dog Who hasn t looked to the sky with the honking of geese and felt a bit of magic at the sight of the iconic vee formation as Canadas move along our Atlantic flyways. This beautiful large bird has made a miraculous recovery from near extinction in the early 1900s. They have been so successful in their comeback that they have become a nuisance in many urban and suburban areas. Unfortunately, thousands of Canadas have given up migration entirely to remain in the lush and inviting habitats of area parks, golf courses and school yards. In contrast to the inviting vees of their migrating kin, large numbers of resident Canadas leave unsightly and unhealthy plugs, destroy landscaping, and can be aggressive while nesting. Left unchecked these resident Canadas, with clutch sizes of normally four to eight eggs, can double their population each five years. These facts have lead to efforts to stabilize the resident populations using humane and ethical means by Susan Laume by groups including GeesePeace, the Humane Society of the United States, and by government agencies. Fairfax County Virginia, where I live, is one of those governments which has a geese management program. The program runs during the April nesting season. This year I volunteered to help with my dog, Tia. We were registered under the County s permit with the Federal Wildlife Service to addle goose eggs. Our humane method required moving the sentry gander off guard and then moving the goose off the nest. Tia s dogged demeanor, rock steady pointing ability, and flush on command was an asset in this part of the process. My part was to test the eggs development stage by doing a float test. For humane reasons, we would not addle eggs within five to ten days of hatching, as prescribed by the Humane Society. If the eggs passed, they were marked, then coated with corn oil to prevent the gas exchange required for an embryo to develop, and returned to the nest. The nest site was flagged, data taken on location and clutch size, and we went on our way, allowing the pair to return to their nest. This addling method prevents the eggs from hatching and doesn t encourage the mated pair to re-lay more eggs, as would egg removal. After a time the pair gives up and leaves the nest, to try again next year. Addling efforts, along with making changes to landscaping, extending the hunt season, and public education about interaction with Canadas, hopefully will Tia on her goose hunt eliminate the need in future for more aggressive depredation of this beautiful bird. I was pleased that Tia was accepted as a volunteer. If you don t wish to train your dog to hunt, participating in this type of management program in your locality is one more way to enjoy the versatility of the wondrous Vizsla. I can say that Tia enjoyed this style of bird work, (as well as riding in the county truck) and she worked with a care that fit the Federal prohibition from harming the federally protected birds. 24 Breeder Referral For those of you who might be interested in helping people find a Vizsla that will bring joy to a family, I could use some help. I get a lot of s from people looking for breeders and puppies and, as you all know, most of the litters are spoken for before their little red paws hit the whelping pad. These people need to be in contact with breeders (even if that breeder is not currently expecting a litter) in their area for mentoring and for helping them find puppies BEFORE they begin searching for puppies on the internet. If you are willing to join a list of breeders/mentors, it would be wonderful. If someone contacts you looking for a puppy and you aren't expecting a litter, you can certainly pass that family/person onto someone who is planning a breeding. Please, send me an with your location (and closest greater metro area) and let me know that it is OK for me to have someone looking for a puppy contact you. Thank you for your help and interest. When we have more than one dog in rescue, we often have to put them in a boarding kennel, which makes evaluation and transfer to their new forever home more difficult on the dogs (and on CVC s pocketbook).
