Our Vision: Beltrami Humane Society is dedicated to operating an animal shelter for the purpose of finding a quality forever home for each animal we serve, encouraging a community of responsible companion animal guardians, eliminating the community's need to euthanize dogs and cats as a means of population control, and promoting a society where companion animals become more valued. A Message from the Director... What a great summer at the Beltrami Humane Society. From June - September we had 96 adoptions which is an average of 24 per month. Since the Humane Society is only open 5 days per week, that means we had more than one adoption per open day of business. That is exciting news, and we plan on continuing that momentum this Fall. The Humane Society has continued striving to improve every aspect of the way we operate. Recently we have added two new Board Members, Laura and Cheryl, who bring unique skills to the organization and are committed to our mission of saving animals. We are also working on creating community partnerships, creating financial stability, and offering the highest quality care possible for the animals. Another exciting change over the summer has been the implementation of our level two training program. Volunteers have been trained in to help with grooming and dog training. These level two volunteers help keep the animals clean and presentable for potential adopters. Additionally, we completed our first Intro to Obedience training course at Bark Avenue Training Center with a number of our adult dogs. Moving forward there is a lot going on this Fall. We have the Fall Harvest Dinner on Oct. 20, Give to the Max Day on Nov. 14, and Santa Paws at the end of November. We look forward to your continued support. We can not save these animals and allow them to bring so much joy into our lives without your help. In this issue... She was nervous and fearful but showed no aggression whatsoever. She is still nervous at times, but is constantly improving. Gemma s brother, Willie, has found a home and now it is her turn. Please help Gemma find a home. Sarge (above) came to our shelter in April of this year. He was clearly very badly mistreated before arriving here. Sarge showed signs of fear aggression and protective behaviors. Since then, Sarge has learned to trust people more, and has shown much improvement in his behaviors. We are hoping that the right person will come along to take him to a forever home. George is a 3 year old cat with FIV. He has been at the shelter since May of He is playful and independent. George s fee is only $25. Help us find him a home.

5 Beltrami Humane Society page 5 Give to the Max Day 2013 Thursday, November 14 Give to the Max Day was created in 2009 to increase giving to nonprofit organizations across the state and move more giving online. It is a day for Minnesotans to come together to raise as much money as possible for nonprofits and schools in 24 hours starting at midnight on November 14, 2013 through midnight on November 15, By engaging as many donors as possible to give to their favorite Minnesota charities in one day Give to the Max Day GiveMN.org is showcasing Minnesota s unparalleled generosity to the world! The Beltrami Humane Society is participating in this day of generosity. It s easy to give. On Thursday, November 14th, go online to givemn.org, search for the Beltrami Humane Society, and click the donate link! This year, the Humane Society has a $27,000 funding gap. This money NEEDS to be raised by the end of the year to cover the expenses of caring for hundreds of stray and unwanted dogs and cats. The money raised will help us provide vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, adequate facilities, needed medical care, and personal attention for every animal. Please join us this year on Give to the Max Day. Your donations will not only make a difference in the lives of these animals, but also in the lives of their future adopters. Fall Harvest Dinner & Santa Paws The Fall Harvest Dinner is coming on Sunday, October 20 from 4 to 7 pm. This event includes a turkey dinner, raffle prizes, a silent auction, and live music by The Acoust Hicks! Cost: Advance tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. $12 at the door. The event is held at the Bemidji Eagles Club Neilson Ave Bemidji Please join us! This year s Santa Paws photography sessions will be held on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1 at the shelter. This is a great opportunity to get professional holiday photographs with your pets and support the Humane Society. Photographs are taken by Image Photography of Bemidji. Cat litter(arm & Hammer, Fresh Step, Tidy Cat ) Cat Food (Purina, Pedigree, Iams) Copy paper Laundry soap Paper Towels Floor Cleaner Does your Puppy chew on everything? Puppies, just like human babies, seem to put everything in their mouths. Pups usually either decide the article is good to chew or reject it. Swallowing it is probably the last thing in their plan. When people take the articles out of the pup s mouth before a decision can be made, some animals seem to develop a strong desire for it thereafter. Also, the puppy may learn that taking such things in its mouth brings attention, even if negative, from people and so may carry on the practice. If your puppy is chewing inappropriate things, always distract first, (stamp your foot, slap a table top, drop something) and then after you have his attention, give him a toy or frozen rag for his teething, then return it to the freezer. It also helps if you puppy-proof your home. Put all things dangerous or valuable out of its reach. Then give the pet flavored nylon bones, hard rubber balls, safe squeaky toys for him to chew on. Avoid giving things like old socks to problem chewing dogs. Dogs just don t seem to understand old socks from new socks, or sock materials from sofa materials.
