A Year in Review FY 17-18
What s New Exercise Pens This past fall, we completed a new outdoor dog play area featuring a bench, toy chest, tennis ball dispenser and waste stations. Made possible by Casey Abington, Jeff Nickerson, the family of Thelma Andrews and anonymous donors. Kennel Painting During our state inspection, it was recommended that we address chipping paint in the dog area before it became an issue. The Northwest s University Seminar class and Sigma Society members tackled the project and repainted every kennel!

Service Opportunities Animal Control Calls In the first half of 2018, community dispatchers have received 454 calls for animal concerns or issues. Maryville Public Safety 224 Nodaway County 211 University 19 Shelter resolved 207 City Dog Licenses 2015 Data from SBTDC estimates a minimum of 2,088 dogs in Maryville city limits. To date, the shelter has only issued 204 city tags for this year. Only 10% of city dogs are in compliance with the city ordinance.
Community Spay/Neuter Many people want to have their pets spayed or neutered, but are unable to financial reasons. The New Nodaway Humane Society will be offering FREE spay/neuter vouchers to the community during September and October. The shelter will make available 60 vouchers to individuals living in Nodaway County that can be redeemed at participating local vets. Spaying or neutering helps pets to live a longer, healthier life, saves money and fights pet overpopulation and euthanasia. Thank you to the Humane Society of St. Joseph for the grant to make this possible!
Volunteers Volunteers help give our animals one-on-one attention, socialization and the exercise needed to make them ready for adoption. Fostering Fostering helps the shelter reduce labor costs and it gives our foster families a chance to save that animal s life. In , 58 dogs and 85 cats were temporarily cared for in foster homes.
Buddy Program Supports can sponsor a shelter pet of their choosing for just $10 a month. The donation helps support daily care of their buddy. Since being revitalized in July 2016, the Buddy program has sponsored more than 550 buddies and raised over $9,000. Crowdfunding In the past year, Amazon Wishlist has become a popular choice with our donors. They enjoy giving to a specific cause like supplies for Phoebe and her puppies born at the shelter. Last month, our Facebook page was approved to accept donations directly from posts.
Puppies for Parole Puppies for Parole (P4P) is a unique partnership between the New Nodaway Humane Society and the Maryville Treatment Center. Selected offenders work with shelter dogs teaching them basic obedience skills and properly socializing the animals, making them more adoptable. P4P gives offenders the skills necessary to support successful rehabilitation and reentry, ultimately improving public safety To date, 125 shelter dogs have entered and completed the P4P program. We have a 100% graduation rate!
Fundraising Fundraising and giving make up 53% of the shelter s annual income.
Travel Tails Tours Long-time supporter and volunteer, Sharon Bonnett, has partnered with Collette Vacations to create vacations that not only allow you to see the world but help our shelter at the same time. Upcoming tours in includes: Danube River Cruise Islands of New England The Northern Lights of Finland Canyon Country (Arizona & Utah) Springtime Tulip River Cruise Exploring Scotland & Ireland Art, Food & Wine of Italy 100% of the commission from Travel Tails Tours is donated to the New Nodaway Humane Society. In that amount totaled $13,835.

Memorials To honor their son and brother, Clements family started a Pay-It-Forward fund with the goal of having Bradie s name appear on a dog kennel for three years as a shelter buddy. They well exceeded their goal and raised enough money to have Bradie listed as a shelter buddy for the next 23 years! We too honored Bradie by permanently naming the kennel Jake s Corner after his beloved Coonhound. The shelter was honored to be the first ever recipient of a Baylee Blessing. Family and friends of Baylee Nicole Hilsabeck donated over $1700 and 265 items to the shelter. We dedicated the Kitty Castle in her honor. Baylee s blessing continues to help dozens of homeless cats as they continue on their journey to a loving, forever home.
