2 Wen in Doubt, Leave Fifi or Fido Home in te Hot Weater Our ot summer days make terapy visits more callenging, but not impossible if you make a few adjustments in your scedule. Don t forget tat dogs pads are very sensitive and can be burned by ot pavement, aspalt and brick or tile pavers. Park as close to te entrance as you can, look for sady walkways, and avoid visiting in te peak eat times of te afternoon. Dogs will need more water and may fade more quickly. Re-scedule in order to visit in cooler times of te day, provide lots of water breaks and keep visits a little sorter. Also tink of a special treat as a tank you for a job well done, suc as a walk on cool green grass, a gentle brusing or a paw and leg massage. Remember tat eat can exacerbate skin problems, so ceck routinely for ot spots, and for burrs, ticks or foxtails tat can irritate te skin and turn into sores. New Laws to Protect our Pooces In less tan 20 minutes, te internal temperature of a parked car in 80 weater even wit partially open windows can soar to 120. Exposure to suc ig temperatures is a painful deat sentence for pets. Tat is wy Gov. Scwarzenegger signed Senate Bill 1806 by Sen. Liz Figueroa tat makes it illegal for pet owners to leave teir animals in a closed veicle in eiter dangerously cold or ot weater. Penalties range from an initial maximum $100 fine for an unattended animal tat suffers little bodily arm to a $500 penalty and up to six monts in county jail for a second offense. Wat if a dog s already in trouble? Sould you find a dog suffering from eat exposure, immediately call your local police department or animal control. Tey are allowed to break a car window if necessary to rescue te animal. (Avoid calling from a cell pone; your call to local police may be delayed.) Once te animal is out of te car, place a wet, cool towel or wet, cool blanket on te dog and ave it taken to a veterinarian. Or wet down te dog wit cool (not cold) water. Te purpose is to lower te dog s core temperature gradually. Time is of te essence, especially if te dog is unconscious, in order to prevent permanent brain damage or deat. Buddy Rios advises pet guardians to carry extra water during te summer so tat tere s always plenty of fres water to quenc a dog s tirst. Sponsorsips for CAT Teams Madelon F. Greenspan; Nancy Langolff; Rebecca Yost in Honor of Joy Kelso; Bridget Binko; Bruce and Heater Pillips in Honor of Trudee Lewis Keeping Everyone Safe from Infectious Contact is a Matter of a Few Simple Habits One of our teacers began te infection control, safety and site protocol section of our training seminars wit tis experience: I always wanted to be a nurse and so I couldn t wait for my first class in nursing scool wen I could start learning about diseases and treatments, medical procedures, blood types, surgery te subjects were endless. But to my utter dismay and disappointment, te first ting we practiced for more tan a week was andwasing! Nancy Langolff as been a nurse for nearly 30 years and se still doesn t forget te first and one of te most important lessons se learned. Was before, between and after seeing patients. Tat is one of te best ways to keep infectious diseases from spreading and to ensure te success of our PFH teams as professional terapy support. Wit te advent of antibacterial gel and wases, like Purell, and antibacterial andwipes, suc as Wet Ones, Handwasing 101 became easier and more practical. Tat is wy PFH requires all teams to carry antibacterial wipes to and to patients and staff members wo pet te canines, to use temselves, and to wipe down teir canine companions between visits. Wile gel works for people, it isn t practical for our dogs. Gel, alcool Handwasing protocols: 1) was for at least 10 seconds (or as long as it takes to sing Happy Birtday. 2) rub briskly between fingers to create friction tat also kills germs. wipes, and even pet wipes don t do te job if your dog comes in contact wit someone wo as a cold, te flu or carries oter germs tat migt be transferred to anoter patient. It is easy to keep your canine terapist from becoming a carrier of infectious diseases. A swipe wit an antibacterial towelette over a dog s cape and bandana or on te top of is ead or werever someone as petted im is a simple act of cleanliness tat will make visiting easy and safe for everyone involved. Before leaving te ospital, don t forget to sign out and wat else? Was your ands! Exploding Hand Gel??? Evidently, te alcool in and gel can overeat and cause te bottle not only to break or leak, but to possibly explode and burn your skin. So, if you re carrying sanitary and gel in te summer, make sure not too leave it in te car were temperatures climb into te 100s very quickly. If you forget and find you gel eating up, don t andle te plastic bottle until it completely cools to avoid any injury. Tank you, Mary Ellen from Hospice, for passing tis on. Y 10 Y 3
4 News and Notes from and about PFH Volunteers Volunteers in te News From te Windsor Times Mary Foster and Hummer ave started a R.E.A.D. program at te Windsor Regional Library tis Spring. Hummer, a beautiful and Won t you read to me, please? well-beaved boy, loves to sare te small sofa wit a cild and book, often putting is ead on an empty lap. Anne Marie Murpy, Cildren s Librarian and Branc Manager, and Laura Wrigt, Librarian, oversee te program tat welcomes readers of all ages and abilities. Te goal of R.E.A.D. is to provide a non-judgmental environment in wic to read, make mistakes and try out new books. Soon te program will expand and Ciauua Jalepeña will take turns wit Hummer. Currently, Hummer s favorite stories seem to be tose about Carl te Rottweiler and is many adventuresl From Pat and Steve Davis Vacaville On one of our visits to Loyalton, we decided to do our terapy work wile people were waiting in te living area for teir flu sots from Kaiser. We visited wit everyone until te nurse arrived. Her elper couldn t come, so in typical boxer fasion, Louie stepped up to te plate. He stood proudly next to eac person wo was getting a sot. He also consoled te frigtened wit licks. He s been asked to return next year on sot day, and of course e will. Got love? From te St. Helena Nairator, te Rotary Newsletter Cris Geyer, Activities Director of Calistoga Gardens, describes te only nursing ome nort of Napa as a place were people are still engaged and even voting. It is also one of te PFH sites tat Steve Yost and is Puli, Badger, visit every week. Calendar Sponsors, Donors and Angels cont. from page one and educational settings. Te second purpose is to celebrate te organization s first decade of service to local communities wit canine terapy. 13 original teams ave become some 15 teams. Dogs range in size from tiny Yorkies to great Mastiffs, we ave almost every breed and lots of rescued dogs tat ave become excellent terapy canines. Te 2008 Calendar will be a wonderful testimony to te rigtful place tat tese dogs and all canines ave in our lives. 5 Wat s a Dog to Do or te Guardian Wen Pet Food Becomes Unsafe? By now, everyone is aware of te contaminated brands and eartwrencing stories of lost or sickened pets tat ave made meal times a worrisome proposition for owners and teir animals. Industry insiders are not sure wen te investigations will end or wat tey will find. In te latest issue of Bark, a compreensive article devoted to pet foods and nutrition is full of insigts, statistics and suggestions. Claudia Kawcznska writes, No matter ow you define it, dog food is processed food. It is manufactured, meaning tat it goes troug many steps before it reaces te dog s bowl. Te more steps a food takes before it is consumed, te more likely it is tat a production or deliver system failure will affect its quality. Today, te pet food industry is a multi-billion dollar business, partly inspired by owners wo feel buying ig quality brands ensures a more compreensive and nutritionally sound diet for teir pets. It s also so uge because pet guardians feel inadequate wen it comes to knowing wat s good and wat s bad for teir pooc. How muc protein? Wat kinds of grains or vegetables are good? Wat about vitamins and oter nutrients? No matter ow you define it, dog food is processed food. It is manufactured it goes troug many steps before it reaces te dog s bowl. And in our ectic, stressed-out life styles, picking up a can of organic food, a top-fligt kibble, and treats wit glucosamine-condroitin make feeding our pets easier, guilt-free and safe. Or so we tougt until te Canadian company Menu Foods began its recall tis year. So wat can owners do? First of all, know some facts. 1. FDA inspects only about 1% of te imported food it regulates (USA Today, 4/9/0). 2. Etoxoquin is a rubber stabilizer tat as become increasingly popular as a preservative wit companies tat make ig-performance pet foods. Monsanto, te cemical s inventor, refined it for use in animal food and companies found it ceaper tan oter means of extending te self-life of pet foods. It is linked to increased auto-immune diseases, from skin problems, to birt defects in puppies and iger rates of cancer. (www. cbc.ca/consumers/market/mp30/etoxyquin.tml) 3. Most pet food is made from te low end of te food cain: by products are parts of cickens, cows and pigs tat are unfit for uman (and animal) consumption: featers, ooves, beaks, Doggy Dinner Loaf (Cicken, Beef or Fis) From Te Pet Lover s Guide to Natural Healing for Cats & Dogs by Barbara Fougére, BVSc Base: Rice (brown or wite), raw 1 cup Water 1 qt. Pasta (wole weat or plain) 1 cup Oats (rolled), raw 1 cup Eggs, raw 4 Flour, wole weat 1/2 c. Calcium carbonate 1 1 /2 t. Vegetables: Potato, raw, copped 1 ave. Sweet potato, raw, copped 1/2 c. Carrot, raw, grated 1/4 c. Pumpkin, raw, copped 1 cup Spinac or card, raw 1 cup Meat: Cicken, raw wit skin 14 oz. Cicken liver 3 1 /2 oz. lungs, bones and ligaments, air, and eads. Weat gluten is a ceap, low-grade protein source tat is added because by-products are so deficient. Second, educate yourself about basic pet nutrition. Donald Strombecke, DVM, PD and professor emeritus, UC Davis, Scool of Veterinary Medicine, publised te first book on preparing ome-cooked pet foods. Home-Prepared Dog and Cat Diets is still considered an excellent reference and introduction to te subject. Ann Martin is anoter important writer and advocate wose Food Pets OR Ground beef, regular, raw 2 c. Liver 3 1 /2 oz. OR Fis, raw 14 oz. Olive Oil 2 T. Cook rice; ten add pasta, potatoes, carrot and pumpkin and cook 15 minutes longer. Add remaining ingredients coosing one meat source. Mix well and place in oiled loaf pan. Bake 1 our at 350. Remove loaf from tin and put back in oven on a cookie seet for 10 to 15 minutes to set. A 1-inc slice is approximately 500 calories. Die For elps consumers understand te awful facts about ow most pet food is made and wat te terms on labels really mean. Finally, we suggest tat our readers go to te latest issue of Bark ( June 200) and read Kawcznska s article. It also contains information on te caloric needs of dogs, ow proteins, carboydrates and fats are used by our pets, and includes a sample recipe (reprinted above) and te appropriate quantities for feeding. Readers may also go to te Bark website: tebark. com for more recipes and information. Y 6 Y
6 At least one Uta soldier owes is life to a war dog. Army Sgt. Joey Fowler of Orem was serving in Iraq in December 2005 wen is Humvee it an improvised explosive device. Fowler suffered severe burns on 54 percent of is body, but is dog, a Belgian Tervuren named Dak, took most of te srapnel. Dak lost is life tat day but saved Fowler s. Cunningam is working not only to onor te dogs service but to memorialize te lives tat were lost. Wen te U.S. pulled its combat troops from Vietnam, e said, te government considered te dogs to be equipment. Most were eutanized. It really was diseartening to a lot of te soldiers. To tis day, a lot of tem still grieve te untimely, unnecessary loss of tose animals, Cunningam said. So tis is a way to elp tem get reconciliation. Dogs are not te only animals tat ave served America during wartime, and te plaque on te memorial onors tose oter service animals, as well. Horses carried troops into battle. Passenger pigeons were used to send notes from te battlefield. During te 2003 invasion of Iraq, dolpins elped te military detect mines in te waters of te Persian Gulf. Cunningam is pleased tat is dream of a war dog memorial is finally a reality, but e is not stopping tere. He as petitions in veterinary clinics calling for a commemorative stamp for te animals, and as sent about 6,000 signatures to te postmaster general. He is also publising Silent Voices, a book about te war dogs e said e opes to release tis summer. Troug te US War Dogs Association, Cris found out tat te military is not supplying sufficient food to te patrol and bomb dogs serving in Iraq today. One of teir programs, Operation Military Care K-9 sends care packages to dogs and teir andlers. Te members are all past and current military dog andlers from different brances of te service, and last year tey were able to send packages of food and treats to 68 k-9 teams. Cris asked tat we post te site s address in case our readers care to find out more: Tere are many toucing potos of andlers and dogs serving trougout te world. Tere are training sots, as well as potos of te dogs on duty. It is amazing to see ow tey are able to adapt to te stress of combat and to military life. Cris Williams is our contact at te Veterans Home and e sent on tis story for our readers. At te end is a sad note about ow our war dogs need need elp and an address for more information if readers are interested. Reprinted from Te Associated Press - Posted : Monday Apr 23, 200 8:15:06 EDT PROVO, Uta From te Revolutionary War to te wars in Iraq and Afganistan, dogs ave served faitfully alongside America s figting men and women. But rarely as tere been any public recognition for man s best friend in a world were a man most needs a friend. Alan Cunningam appreciates te roles dogs ave played during wartime and is oping oters will take notice. Tis mont, te American Fork veterinarian unveiled a memorial at Uta Veterans Memorial Park near Camp Williams, onoring America s fourlegged service members. Near te entrance to te visitors center, a bronze German seperd sits majestically over a plaque tat reads, In onor of canine war eroes and forgotten service animals. After reading an article about te dogs tat served te U.S. in te Vietnam War, Cunningam spent several years and $9,000 on te monument. I tink of te lives of tese great eroes. Teir lives are unsung and I m trying to get teir story told, e said. Te War Dog Memorial Fund in Corona, Calif., estimates tat 4,900 dogs served te U.S. in Vietnam. In te field, tey would take te point in front of teir andlers, warning troops of enemy soldiers and trip wires. In firefigts, te dogs were known to sield troops wit teir bodies and drag te wounded to safety, Cunningam said. In te troops down time, te dogs served as muc-needed companions. Maurice Jonson of te War Dog Memorial Fund said tose dogs are credited wit saving 10,000 American lives in a war tat claimed 58,000. Tere would be more tan 10,000 [more] names on te wall if it weren t for te dogs, se said, referring to te Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Wasington, D.C. Te War Dog Memorial Fund opes to erect a national war dog memorial tere, as well. Dogs roles as service members go back to founding of tis country, according to Maj. Hank McIntire of te Uta National Guard. Soldiers kept teir pet dogs wit tem in te field and sometimes used tem to send messages. Today, dogs still serve te U.S. in Iraq and Afganistan, serving as guards or sniffing for bombs in places were explosives claim te lives of scores of soldiers. (cont. on page ) Y 8 Y 5
