AMRONE Tales, Page 2 Does your mal look like a WHALE? Overweigt dogs migt seem appy but tey re in trouble By Joanne Duval Iknow if I cut back on my food portions or if I exercise more I could lose a few pounds. I know I am not tin anymore. Maybe if I walked everyday didn t eat tat second elping. By now you are probably asking wat tis as to do wit dogs. It is really pretty simple. Many of us are overweigt. We are earing tat uman obesity is an epidemic. Wat we don t ear so often is tat pet obesity is also an epidemic. Before you read any furter take tis test: 1. Can you feel your dog s ribs under a layer of fat? 2. Wen you view your dog from above can you see is waist? 3. Does your dog ave fat deposits at te base of te tail or in te lumbar area of te back? 4. Does your dog s belly distend instead of sloping up to meet is ind legs? If you said yes to any one of te questions ten you probably ave a dog tat is overweigt or obese. Don t feel alone te American Kennel Club says tat one in every four dogs is obese! So wat is te big deal, you ask? Isn t a fat dog a appy dog? I spent some time researcing dog obesity and ere are some of te interesting tings I learned: Approximately 25 percent of overweigt dogs develop serious joint complications. Artritis can develop or worsen wit every extra pound. Hip dysplasia can become You migt be loving your dog to deat. more severe tan if te dog were lean. Overweigt dogs are very prone to strains and tears of te cruciate ligament. One of te most common complications of obesity in dogs is te development of diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes). Like overweigt people, overweigt dogs tend to ave increased blood pressure. In overweigt animals, te lungs don t function properly. Te additional fat in te cest restricts te expansion of te lungs. Your good dog migt be well beaved because running, jumping, etc. is too muc for im to manage. Overweigt dogs ave less endurance and stamina. Fat is an insulator, wic is fine if you are a arbor seal. But if you are an overweigt nortern breed dog in te eat of summer it makes you less able to regulate your body temperature. Hot days are at best miserable or at worst dangerous. An overweigt dog s liver function can be decreased due to te fat tat builds up in te liver. Dogs sometime need surgery and being overweigt can ave dire consequences during anestesia. Poor circulation of oxygenated blood increases te risk of cardiac arrest. Fat layers make it arder for te vet to find wat tey are looking for, wic makes te surgery arder and longer, tereby increasing te risk. Overweigt dogs ave an increased risk of developing constipation and ave more flatulence. Overweigt dogs migt ave a decreased resistance to viral and bacterial infections. Tey also ave a bigger risk of skin and coat diseases. Studies suggest tat obese dogs tend to ave an increased risk of developing some kinds of cancer and tumors. Tose facts alone are pretty convincing evidence tat keeping your malamute lean is a good ting. But if you love your dog and I aven t convinced you yet tat e migt need to lose some weigt, ten [Continued on Page 18]

AMRONE Tales, Page 4 AMRONE does not ave puppies come into rescue very often; typically most of our dogs are between 16 monts and 3 years old. Wen we do get puppies you migt not ear about tem since we do not advertise tem. We usually are very careful about placing tem and ave omes tat are ready and waiting. Tis as been an unusual time in tat we ave ad 10 dogs under six monts old turned over to us. Seven of tese pups were turned in by two different families wo tougt tat aving pups would be a fun ting to do. One of tem told me e was oping to make quite a bit of money selling tem. Needless to say, bot families found tat breeding is not always easy and finding good omes for te puppies is even arder. Tey were unable to find omes for all te pups in te litter and turned to AMRONE for elp. AMRONE did Dillon (formerly Taz) Te puppy Dillon, formerly known as Taz, as been a joy. He as added so muc life to our ome, someting missing since te deat of our samoyed last October. At first it was clear e missed is sisters and all te fun e ad wit tem at te Duvals ome. After a few weeks of te Gorbi routine e adjusted quite well. Kona, rigt, and Silo romp.read Kona s story on Page 5. P elp after it was clear tat te puppies parents ad been sterilized so tat tere would not be more unwanted litters in te future. Te oter puppies we took in were turned in after tey U were placed in families tat found out tat a malamute puppy could be a andful! Recently, Danny and I fostered four puppies for AMRONE: Rainey (now Kona), Squirt (now Bella), Taz (now Dillon) and Bella (now Breeze). P Wile we were updating teir vaccinations and getting tem spayed/neutered te pups spent a lot of time wit my family. My son Grayson, 4, fell in love wit tem. He was very upset wen P tey all ad to go to new omes and screened some of te adopters arder tan I did! Danny and I were trilled wit te omes te puppies found and look forward to seeing tem grow up. I ope you enjoy reading about tem. I E S Joanne Duval Everyone in te neigborood as fallen for im, wic is not ard to do. He enjoys is uman broters, especially our youngest son, Ali. Tey love to wrestle and Ali does a great job of brusing im wile tey sit on te couc watcing T.V. Dillon as taken to te leas well and enjoys is twice-daily walks. He particularly enjoys [Continued on Page 5]

AMRONE Tales, Page 5 PUPPIES! [From Page 4] walking wit our neigbors dog, Maggie, part mastiff and great Dane. He as just begun training classes, someting very important due to is size and strengt. He just visited wit Susan Conant and as become a weigt watcer now. My tose training treats certainly add up! He is a wonderful dog and once is puppy days are beind im we are still confident e will still possess tat miscievousness tat we are sure earned im te original name of Taz. Julie Gorbi Dillon, friendly and miscievous. Kona (formerly Rainey) (NOTE: Kona, poto on Page 4, came to us at te end of February at te age of 6 monts. Te first week was very difficult as se was not being very friendly towards our ever friendly Silo, and we were deeply concerned tat se was simply not going to work out. By te end of one week, owever, teir relationsip improved, and we ad all fallen opelessly in love wit sweet little Kona, and now we cannot imagine our lives witout er. For Kona s perspective on er new ome, in er own words, please read on.) Hi Tere! My name is Kona. I m te one tat s lauging in te picture, because I [Continued on Page 6] Breeze (formerly Bella) Wen we visited te Duvals to coose a puppy we took along our best pal,10-year-old Kodi (anoter AMRONE dog), so e could elp make te decision. We knew we would ave to get im a girlfriend or else it would be a rival. Kodi seemed to be OK wit Breeze, wose face just encanted us, so te decision was made. On te trip ome Breeze proved to be an excellent rider, settling quickly in te car. Se made erself at ome just as quickly and began a two-week process of making friends wit Kodi, an old guy wo was dealing wit te recent loss of is life-long buddy, Sadow. Grumpy, bored and just wanting to be left alone, Kodi soon began to perk up. Ever persistent, Breeze didn t give im muc coice; e was going to like er or else. And it worked; Kodi as taken a renewed interest in life, as become re-energized and now frequently initiates play time. Te cat, Inky, as ad a different experience, owever. Breeze is fascinated by er, a living, breating, (very) mobile squeaky toy. Tey are slowly learning to co-exist and daily rub noses now, but tere is a long road remaining. Breeze as completed an eigt-week obedience class wit nine oter dogs and is preparing to move into an advanced class. Se learns quickly as se proved early on by being about 99 percent ousebroken te day se arrived. Now tat te weater is warmer se went clamming Kodi sares is bed wit Breeze, left. wit us and amused us by opping deer-like troug te sallows at low tide. A little later se elevated tat feat to a mystical level by carging across our swimming pool on its solar cover, barely toucing water. Wen we are busy Breeze amuses erself for ours by bird-watcing on te deck, playing wit er toys and er own innovation dipping for treats in waste cans. Se just loves tose dryer seets! Breeze as a warm, very friendly personality, exuberantly greeting everyone se meets. During er frequent walks around te neigborood se as made friends wit all te oter dogs (and people, too). Upon meeting te dogs se will give tem little malamute kisses, wic tey seem to like. Breeze is a camp, a real treasure, and we are very tankful to AMRONE for bringing us togeter. Rut and Bob Mellen

AMRONE Tales, Page 6 PUPPIES! [From Page 5] love my broter, Silo, so very muc. We play, run, wrestle and cew on eac oter constantly. I used to be very afraid of im, and growled and snapped at im wen I first arrived at my new ome. He was so very big and curious and a little too friendly for my tastes. But once I realized ow sweet e was, we became best buddies. I m scared of a lot of tings, but Silo elps me not to be scared. I used to get very nervous and trow up in te car and I would do my best not to get in te car at all! But Silo taugt me tat its a lot of fun to go for car rides. I used to be so scared of my leas, I would lie down and would try not to budge, every time my people took it out, but Silo sowed me tat te leas means we are going on a walk and walks are a lot of fun. I used to try to crawl on my belly all te way troug te city of Newburyport on walks wit Silo and my people. But once again Silo sowed me all of te great tings, people and dogs tere are to sniff in Newburyport. Now I love going tere, especially wen we get to jump around te rock formations by te playground. I go to doggie scool now, too. Te first class, tere were so many big, woofy dogs, I spent most of te time in my people s laps! But now after a few weeks I realize tat tey re just like Silo, and now I even woof back. My best trick is lying down, and tey didn t ave to teac it to me in doggie scool! Sometimes, if someting scares me or if I don t want to do someting, I just lie down, as flat as can be. Wen I first came to my new ome, I used to lie down a lot. Lying on te floor and crawling. Tose were my specialties. But now, I m becoming a lot bolder and sitting tall and proud, just like Silo. My people say I m growing up. I am growing a lot, especially my legs. My people say I look like a gawky teenager. I don t know wat tat means. At te end of te day, wat I love to do is snuggle up wit my people and Silo and watc a little TV and ten I and Silo go into our cozy crates at te foot of our people s bed and nap for te nigt. I dream about my new ome and my people and especially my big broter, Silo I love tem all! Tank you, AMRONE! Te nigt before Kona (formerly Rainey) was picked up from er foster ome wit Joanne and Danny Duval, tere was a wild winter wind. Kona is a Hawaiian winter wind tat brings rain, or in tis case, Rainey. Silo was adopted from AMRONE in August Ginger and Grac acie ie Ginger and Gracie were te sweetearts of Camp N Pack As 6-mont-old puppies, tey sat quietly in teir crates and got lots of attention and walks from various people. Tey were te most wellbeaved malamute puppies we re ever likely to see! We fell in love wit tem instantly, and wen we got a tird cancer diagnosis on our older two dogs, we decided someone was trying to tell us someting. We adopted te girls a week or two later. Four females togeter as been a callenge. We ve ad our sare of figting, and separation. Ultimately, toug, we ve learned tat nobody really wants to do any damage, and te figting is simply play wit excess escalation. Being vigilant about separating and intervening wen beavior begins to deteriorate as Gracie, left, Ginger, center, and Meeko accompany Jill Hunter at tis spring s Bark in te Park. solved tese issues. Separation isn t nearly as bad as it sounds, since every dog gets to spend time wit every oter dog. We ve eventually learned tat tere s a tree-way combination tat s to be avoided. Te puppies ave been a lot of fun, and a lot of work. And a lot of money! Our vet as been joking about naming te new wing after us; we ve paid for it. Ginger wiped out at top speed, fell over a 4-foot retaining wall, and spent te next eigt weeks cratebound, wit a torsion fracture of er tibia. As our vet put it, Se ll eal like crazy. And tat se did. Se [Continued on Page 7]

AMRONE Tales, Page 7 PUPPIES! Scarlet makes erself comfortable in er new ome. Scarlet (formerly Squ quirt irt,, ten Bella) (NOTE: Here is a message tat Grayson Duval received from one of te puppies, Squirt, after se was adopted. _J. Duval) Dear Buddy Gray, I just wanted to write to tell you tat I am very appy ere wit my new family Diane, Jim, Zoey and Siverado (also AMRONE dogs). All of us get along and love eac oter. I do miss you, Gray, and I will tink of you often. You ave a big place in my eart. Tank you for petting me, playing wit me and loving me! Here is a new picture of me. We will keep in touc. Tank you, Squirt [From Page 6] was ready to bounce around te ouse and yard long before se was allowed. It took massive doses of acepromazine to make a dent in er to stay quiet in er crate. Wen se first broke te leg, se just decide tings were out of er control, and put er fait in us to elp. Since tat day, se s been far more affectionate tan before. So as awful an experience as tat was, I tink it elped sape er personality for te better. More recently, Gracie as spent a couple of nigts wit our vet as well. In te span of a few days, te two produced a couple of field mice, a bird and a bumblebee. (I wis we could ave gotten a picture of Ginger sitting in er crate wit noting but a talon sticking out of er mout.) Te bee left its mark. Gracie got stung in er mout. Jill found er sitting quietly in er crate an our later wit er muzzle swollen to te size of a football. Her tongue was swollen so muc tat se couldn t close er mout. We rused er to our vet, and one nigt and several undred dollars later, se s just fine. Two weeks later, se refused to stand up for te morning meal. Tis is a 15-mont-old bouncy puppy wo overnigt refuses to move. Again anoter nigt wit our vet. Preliminary diagnosis is Lyme, or some oter tickborne illness. Se is again doing great, back to er normal self, now just alf way troug te treatment. Bot puppies compete for our attention round-teclock. We ve settled into a routine were te older dogs clear out, and te puppies watc television wit us. One puppy lying belly up wit er feet in te air, and er ead in my lap, and te oter snuggling into Jill s neck. Every 20 minutes or so, tey eiter swap places, or make a break for someting tey eard out in te yard. Invariably, tey re casing a noise tat came from te television. We ve not done any formal training wit tese guys, since tere s always been someting preventing us from doing it. (Did I forget to mention te 45-day quarantine after trapping an opossum?) Tey re still te very wellbeaved puppies tey were at CNP, aside from te digging, figting, unting and counter surfing, of course. After all, we re still talking about malamutes! Matt Fienberg

AMRONE Tales, Page 8 Burnout: te monster in te rescue closet I m so tired and discouraged all te time. I feel like I m on duty 24/7 and never get a day off. Te arder I work, te arder tey want me to work. Noting ever gets better, it seems like it only gets worse. Te dogs don t stop coming no matter wat I do. By Vicki DeGruy Do any of te above sound familiar? If you ve been a rescue volunteer for any lengt of time, I know tey do. Tey re some of te innermost tougts of overextended rescuers, rarely expressed out loud even to eac oter. How do I know? Because I ve been tere myself. All of tose tougts ave been my own at one time or anoter trougout my rescue career. Rescue is an extremely stressful activity wit a ig rate of burnout. Te same applies to people wo work in animal selters. Burnout is a common problem tat eventually affects almost everyone. It s ard to prepare new volunteers for tis because teir entusiasm blocks out te warnings of te more experienced. You can tell tem about it but I ave days were my ands sake just tinking about picking up te pone to call anoter owner wo wants to dump teir dog. I can ardly bring myself to do it anymore. Wen I do, I just want to scream at tem. My bills are all past due, I owe a fortune to te vet, tere s no food in te fridge, I m using te carge card to make ends meet and I m over my credit limit again. I don t know ow I m going to buy dog food tis week. Sometimes I grieve for te life I ad before rescue. It s been so long, I ardly remember te fun I used to ave, obbies, trips, friends. I miss tem so muc! I want to quit so badly but I can t. Te dogs are depending on me to save tem. Tinking about quitting makes me feel guilty and asamed of myself. But I can t go on tis way muc longer. I really wis someone would rescue me! it goes in one ear and out te oter. Tey don t understand until tey ve arrived tere temselves, and ten tey don t know ow to cope wit it. Oddly, for as common as it is, burnout is seldom discussed. It s ard to get people to talk about it. Te subject makes people uncomfortable, especially tose wo are suffering from it. I m not a psycologist but I imagine tere must be reasons for tis reluctance. Maybe we re afraid we ll be seen as weak, unable to measure up to saintly expectations; maybe we tink we ve failed someow. Watever te reason, tis silence as created a gaping casm tat many rescuers fall into, never to be seen again. Burnout is probably te most dangerous problem tat rescuers face. We need to talk about it and elp eac oter troug it. To cope wit burnout, you ave to take back control of your life. We get into rescue to elp animals in our spare time but it quickly takes over all our time and resources, becoming te only ting in our lives. To put rescue back in perspective: Take care of yourself first. You re no good to anyone or anyting if you re tired, miserable, broke, or angry all te time. Neglecting your own needs makes you less effective, not more. You deserve to eat and sleep well, to be ealty, to ave fun and be appy as muc as anyone else. Look at your situation and compare it to were you want to be. Wat are your true personal priorities in life? Make a list of tem beginning wit tose most important to you. Are te ones at te top of your list getting te largest amount of your time and resources? If not, rearrange your time so tey are. Wat activities besides rescue do you enjoy most? Do you (or did you) ave a obby? Make anoter list. Do someting from tat list every day. It doesn t ave to be a big ting, it can be as small as reading a few pages of a novel or taking a walk wit your dog. Te important ting is to make time every day to do someting tat makes you appy. Don t put tis off until you ave time make time! Tis little daily break will do wonders for your attitude and well-being. Take at least one day a week off from rescue. Do watever you want or need to do on tat day as long as it doesn t involve rescue. Even selter employees ave days off and so sould you! Stay connected to te real world. Some volunteers get so deeply involved wit rescue, tey isolate temselves and develop a very narrow, negative mindset. Read books and newspapers, visit wit non-rescue friends, go places, meet new people. [Continued on Page 12]

Could you be a foster volunteer? By Stepanie Bayliss, Treasurer Tere is one question I am asked most often by te public, by dog lovers I meet, by friends and family, by new volunteers in rescue wen discussing rescue: How can you give up a dog you ave fostered? Te easy answer is, wen I take a dog into foster care, I know from te beginning tat te dog does not belong to me. I am giving te foster dog a temporary ome wit care and attention until AMRONE can find te perfect permanent ome for tat dog. Te more complex answer is, sometimes it s arder, sometimes it s easier! Fostering IS extra work. It requires te time for daily care of an animal; feeding, exercise, cleaning. It requires trips to te vet. It requires evaluation of te dog s temperament, beavior, and training. For tose of us wit our own pets, it requires separation and juggling of animals. It requires communication wit, and evaluation of, potential adopters. Te reward of fostering is elping my foster dog find te perfect matc. Tere s no feeling tat equals knowing my former foster dog is now a beloved companion. Wen I see pictures of (or better yet, in person) a former foster dog as an adored member of a new family, I m appy and satisfied. It makes te work truly wortwile. Usually I m bot sad and appy wen a dog leaves for a new ome. Sad because I get attaced to most of my foster dogs, and I m sorry to see tem go. Happy because I know tey re starting a new capter in teir life, and will receive all te care and love tey deserve. In a few cases, I don t get attaced to a foster dog. Sometimes a foster volunteer just doesn t it it off wit a foster dog. Tat s OK not every person loves every dog, and not every dog loves every person. In a few oter cases, te foster dog becomes a resident dog, and never leaves. Fostering a senior or special-needs dog is often a permanent foster. Tinka was a blind senior wo appily lived out er last years wit us. Se was easy-going, affectionate, and just wanted to ang out. Our two current mals, Blizzard and Smokey, were fosters before we adopted tem. We wanted to adopt a second dog, and after fostering Blizzard for awile, we decided tat e was te rigt matc for us and we were te rigt matc for im. A few years later we adopted Smokey. Every foster ome as a different AMRONE Tales, Page 9 environment. Some volunteers foster dogs in outdoor kennels, some volunteers foster dogs indoors, and some are a mix of te two. Some keep foster dogs totally separate from resident dogs, some slowly integrate te foster into te pet ouseold. Tere is no rigt, or perfect, foster ome. AMRONE does its best to matc dogs wit appropriate foster omes. If a dog as always been an indoor dog, e may not do well in an outdoor kennel. If a dog as always been an outdoor dog, it may take some adjustment for te dog to be primarily indoors. Te training and temperament of te dog, as well as te pets, scedule and experience of te foster ome play a part in te matc. But virtually any ome can be a foster ome. AMRONE is always in need of foster care. New fosters are mentored by experienced volunteers wo provide assistance and support wit all aspects of fostering. AMRONE as written guidelines for fostering to elp foster omes understand te process. AMRONE reimburses for expenses involved wit fostering. If only TEN new volunteers stepped forward eac year and offered to foster just ONE dog every few years, AMRONE would never ave a sortage of foster omes. Tink about it. 10 AMRONE Tales, Page 10 AMRONE Tales, Page 11 Wulfie Wulfie is a 3-year-old neutered male. He is in foster care wit AMRONE because is former family is expecting twins and does not ave room for tree kids and a big dog. In is former ome e was described as loving and friendly by is owners. His foster ome agrees but also feels tat e ad never been made to do anyting e didn t want to do and ad never learned te word no. He is full of energy and according to is foster dad e is very smart, wic makes im a good candidate for a new family tat wants to ave a dog tat will be active wit tem and even maybe do a sport. Agility, backpacking, weigt-pulling, obedience and Rally O are all possible great activities for Wulfie. On te oter and, since e is so smart Wulfie is not a candidate for a family tat wants a ready-made dog tat will do everyting tey want. He tinks for imself so e will need guidance, love and continued obedience training to make im reac is potential as a super companion for is perfect new family. Meesa Meesa, wo just turned 7 in April as been te perfect dog, according to er owners, but sadly se makes teir son sick. Se is spayed and up to date on all sots. Her owners say se is very loving and friendly (unless you are a duck or cicken). Housebroken and loving to stay in te ouse wit everyone, Meesa also likes to be outside, were se never tries to get troug te fence. Se as been good wit oter dogs and se is trainable and listens well. Se loves to go for walks and beaves at te vet and te groomers. Overall, my owners tink Meesa is an easy dog and would make a great pet for someone wit love to give er. Te dogs on tese pages were in foster care as of te middle of June. To learn more about tem, new dogs tat AMRONE as taken in, or to fill out an adoption application, please visit our Web site at Moose Moose as spent te last four of is 11 years of life living on a sort cain. Wen tis gentle old guy came to live wit is foster parents e was out of practice playing and running. Now in is foster ome e as 1½ acres of fenced yard to run in and a arem of beautiful lady malamutes to dote on im. He always presents a appy face to te world and likes to lean against you to get rubbed and ugged. Most of all, e loves is marrow bones and, unfortunately, rocks. He gets te former and is foster parents ave worked ard to keep im from eating te latter. Moose loves walks and is waiting for a special ome to give im te attention e craves. Soco Soco is a andsome fellow wit eyes so dark tat tey are almost black. His expression is alert and intelligent, and e is interested in everyting. He is neutered, up to date on all sots, and on eartworm preventive. At 19 monts, Soco is puppyis. Soco s obvious intelligence and is responsiveness to oral praise and food treats make im a fine candidate for te obedience training e Jacques Jacques will celebrate is birtday in August e will be 13 years young! He tinks e is still a puppy te way e runs around is foster mom s yard and jumps up and down at dinnertime. In is foster ome e as made friends wit two oter foster dogs wo are bot girls (He tinks tey are really cute!) Jacques as some ealt issues for is age but is overall a appy-go-lucky guy waiting for a ome. needs. He sits on command and glows wit pride at is accomplisment. Helping Soco to master new beaviors in wic e can take pride will enable im to leave is babyis beaviors beind. Tis will be a fun dog to train. Soco comes from a loving, responsible ome. His owner simply does not ave te time needed to exercise and train a lively adolescent malamute. If you do, please consider Soco. Suki Suki as owners wo love er very muc but se is making one of teir cildren sick. Tey ave tried several tings but noting seems to work so tey are trying to find a great new ome for Suki. Se is about 3 years old and originally came from an animal selter. Se is spayed and as ad all of er vet work kept up to date, including lyme vaccinations and eartworm pills. Great inside te ouse and wit all te family members, Suki also likes oter dogs and even cats, living wit two of tem. Se is active, likes to get regular exercise and is smart, aving graduated from obedience scool. Nedda Nedda is a wooly, black, wite and grey, 7-mont-old spayed puppy wit an abundance of energy and curiosity. Se is a very sweet puppy and as never met man nor beast tat se didn t like wit exuberance. Her greetings often include some mouting, wic we are working on, but se as a very good recall, sit, leave-it and drop-it. Her favorite ting to do is destroy trees. Se rips te bark off and ten cews off brances tat se can reac. Se is completely ousebroken and likes staying in er crate. Nedda comes to us from a very loving family tat just found tat tey were not up to te task of raising a puppy. Because of er solid background se is very confident and outgoing. Her ig energy and drive would serve er well if se ever ad te opportunity to be a working dog (weigt pull, sledding, packing, etc). Her attention span is a little on te sort side and se already appears to ave a plan to get troug life on er good looks. Wen se cocks er ead and blinks er big brown eyes, followed wit a paw wave or belly up, one can ardly elp from lauging, never mind remembering wat it was se was asked to do in te first place.

AMRONE Tales, Page 12 Emotional aspects of rescue are burdensome [From Page 8] Set a SMART goal for yourself and do someting every day toward reacing it. A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Acievable, Realistic, and as a Timetable. An example of a SMART goal is, I am going to teac my foster dog to sit and stay on command witin two weeks. Goals like, I m going to end all pet abuse in te U.S., or, someday I m going to move to te country and build a sanctuary, are noble tougts but too big and vague to keep you focused on tem. Tey usually produce discouragement. SMART goals automatically steer you toward progress and acievement tat provide personal satisfaction and te entusiasm to set and reac your next SMART goal. Keep a record of your successes and look at tem often. In rescue, te negative can seem to overwelm te positive. Our efforts can feel insignificant and we forget ow muc good we ve done. Keep a poto album of all your placements, all your appy endings, and review tem regularly, not just wen you re feeling low. You ll be amazed to see ow muc you ave actually accomplised. Be proud of tem! Tey ll carge your batteries for anoter go. Ask for elp. None of us is in tis alone altoug many of us seem to tink we are. Wen you re discouraged, depressed, overwelmed or just need to vent, tell somebody! We all need support at times. Wen we support eac oter, we all feel better. Evaluate your rescue activities and make adjustments tat allow you to ave a life as well as a rescue program. If you ve been in rescue long enoug to feel burned out, you ve been in long enoug to know wat you re best at, wat you can afford, and ow many dogs you can care for properly. Use tis information to set new priorities and limits for your program, and ten stick to tem. Tis last is probably te ardest for rescuers to put into practice because it means saying No sometimes. We re not very good at tat, are we? Te emotional aspects of rescue weig eavy on us. We re constantly pressured to say yes. It s very, very ard to say no and it s usually attaced to a guilt trip. It s amazing ow many burdens we ll take upon ourselves to avoid feeling guilty, but tey ll bring you to only one place: burnout. My donation of $ is enclosed. You ave to say no to survive for long in rescue because te animals never stop coming and people will never stop making demands of you. 12 AMRONE Tales, Page 13 Kubota s adventures in training and commands By Corinne Zipps Training is suc a wonderful ting tat I ad never even considered tat tere could be a down side. After all, wat on eart could be negative about using a local agility course, teacing a dog about climbing small wooden ladders and going troug tunnels? Wat could possibly be negative about teacing commands tat can keep your dog safe, suc as te Trade command? Or training your dog to eat a bone on a small rug to keep te mess off te rest of te carpeting? Well, malamutes are experts in kicking tings up a notc, tat s wat! Around my ouse, Trade is now interpreted as, Hmmm, wat is te currency of te moment? During a recent pone conversation (do tey all ate it wen we re on te pone?), Kubota first brougt out a paperback book tat I d already read. It wasn t very good, I ad no plans for passing it on, and it didn t pose any danger to im, so no trade. Next up was a pair of socks, and again no deal. Te tird attempt to get te uman off te pone was a remote control, wic was wort a Trade for a cookie. Or in malamute tinking, Aa! I ave now discovered te currency of te moment! Before te conversation was finised, I ad been delivered four additional remote control units. I still don t know were on eart e found tem all or wat tey operate. Until ten, I didn t even know I owned four remote control units! You would also tink it would be virtually impossible to lose a moose-sized dog in an 864-square-foot ouse. Well, it used to be impossible until e learned to crawl troug tunnels into wic e barely fit. After tat training, Kubs apparently lost any inibition watsoever about squeezing into small, dark places. One day, I searced inside te ouse for close to an our, cecking and rececking doors, windows, under beds, and everywere else I could see. Te frantic uman eventually discovered tat te moose-sized dog ad someow managed to squeeze troug te 5-inc space between te dryer and a wall. He was appily occupying is very own cave under te foyer stairs along wit a favorite stuffed teddy bear. I ve also learned tat any canine fear of eigts Fear of eigts? Wat fear? Kubota likes te view from on ig. apparently can be conquered after learning to climb just a few wooden rungs onto a platform. A andyman was cecking out a vent pipe from my roof tis fall wen I eard im exclaim, Well, I ain t never seen noting like tat before! Of course, I eaded outside assuming tat someting rater strange was emerging from te vent pipe. Instead, I found Kubota at te top of te rickety aluminum ladder peering onto te roof. If you ever need to jump start your eart, I can igly recommend tis metod. Even someting as simple as learning to eat a bone on a small scatter rug can ave its consequences if te creature learning tis skill is a malamute. It is a wonderful ting to teac in tat it saves a lot of carpet mess. But please tell me, ow on eart can you resist a beautiful malamute wit a big smile and swising tail waiting expectantly after retrieving te special scatter rug and arranging it perfectly on te carpet? I don t know ow your training efforts are coming along, but I suspect my malamute is training me rater well!

AMRONE Tales, Page 14 Mail Call Letters and potos from adopters Wat can we say about Cubby? He is just a wonderful dog. He adores Kita, our little Siberian. Tey eat, sleep, and play togeter. Tey love to patrol along our fence looking for te neigbor s cat or for squirrels, cipmunks, turkey, deer, or anyting moving in our woods. Cubby as sown Kita te joy of digging uge oles and tearing up te landscape fabric underneat. Cubby s favorite ting is to go for a walk. He goes for two walks a day minimum. He loves to go up to people, press is ead into tem and ten roll over on is back for a belly rub. He and Kita ave many friends along our walk routes wo look forward to Cubby, left, and Kita ave many pals. greeting and petting tem. We call tem fan clubs. Cubby loves (demands) attention and we give im a lot of it. He now weigs a ealty 57 pounds, and by all appearances is very appy being in our family. Tom & Jane Gonska Hi, Just wanted to give you an update on ow Nola as been doing. He is doing great! His first few days were a little saky wen e was adjusting, going a little nuts, but e as calmed rigt down. Loves to go for wicked long walks. He s a great dog. I am going to take im to some obedience classes to try to curb is jumping and play-biting. He doesn t do it to me but wen e gets really yper and playful e does it to my girlfriend and broter. He is great at nigt and as made is own little areas to play in, a a. If you ave any suggestions on ow to get im to not jump on people I d love to ear tem because e really just goes nuts wit tat and tat s about it. Tougt you would want to know ow e as adjusted toug. Matt McLean I m sitting ere wit tears streaming down my face, aving just returned from te vet wo put down our beautiful 14-year-old malamute Bandit. We took er in from Sally Boggs 10 years ago as a foster dog temporarily! Bandit was 4 years old, and se only ad 3 legs. Se ad lived for te first four years of er life on a 4-foot cain outside someone s ouse. Malamute Rescue ad been trying to save er for years. Ten, one day, se got loose, and se got it by a car. Rater tan trying to save te left ind leg, er owners ad it amputated. I guess, at tat point, tey decided se was too muc trouble, so tey gave er up to Malamute Rescue. Sally knew we ad a malamute and would be able to be a foster family for tis dog, so tat s ow Bandit came to us. But we knew witin minutes tat tis dog would never go anywere else. Se was totally maladjusted socially, wit bot dogs and umans. Se would growl if you bent over er or came at er from overead. Se tougt se sould be alpa dog, so se growled at all oter dogs, even our 120-pound malamute Niki. Se was a total cow ound couldn t ever get enoug food. We always ad to watc er weigt, because wit tree legs, se didn t need extra weigt to carry around. Te only animal se seemed appropriate wit was te cat. We tink er only companion on tat 4- foot cain was a cat! In fact, one cold winter day, se eld Grady down wit er paws and licked im so muc e was soaking wet and got ypotermia and almost died! Se was just loving on im. Poor Bandit s life wasn t easy. Her body was always torqued to te left, so tat er rigt ind leg was more in te middle so se could balance erself. Se never got used to te fact tat se couldn t be alpa dog, and se never felt like se ad enoug food. Wen we went for walks, se was te only one of our dogs wo ad to be on a leas, because se would take off! One day, wen se was about 9 years old, we tougt we could trust er, but se took off, taking our puppy wit er. Tey went up to te local gas station, crossed a busy road, crossed back again, went down to te river... my usband finally found tem by going across te river onto te road tat followed te river. By looking across, e could see tem at te river s edge. Bandit was so exausted se was lying down resting, wit te puppy near by. Tis past Friday we decided to put er down tis week on Wednesday wen te vet comes to put down our old rescued Standard-bred orse. On Saturday nigt Bandit stopped being able to use er ind leg. However, se didn t stop being interested in food! Se would drag erself down te all to te kitcen were we were eating. And se could no longer get troug te dog door to te deck and back yard. For some time se ad stopped being able to go up and down te stairs on te deck, and se couldn t old erself up wile se did er business, so tings were going sout pretty fast. Several nigts ago, in te wee ours of te morning, my usband eard tis patetic oarse bark and found er outside, off te deck, unable to get back up. And er dignity was sorely urting. Se even no longer ad a owl in er. Wen te oter tree dogs started one of teir several daily owls, se was mute. Se ad lost er voice. It was time to go. And se didn t even growl at us as we bent over er to say our goodbyes! Tank you AMRONE for bringing tis incredibly strong and beautiful creature into our lives. Doris Luter and Jon Wood

AMRONE Tales, Page 15 Mail Call Letters and potos from adopters Dakota knows ow to be a big it wit er family. Dear AMRONE, Wat is it tey say about good intentions? We ve been meaning to send a letter and pictures for a wile, but just never seem to get around to it. We adopted Uter (formerly RJ) in 2000 and Clovis (formerly Miki) in Wat a couple of caracters! Uter is a big cuddler. He loves noting more tan burrowing up against you and nuzzling. He as no idea tat e s 8 or so years old and bounces around ere like a puppy. Case me, rope tug, and keep away are a few of is preferred games. He also loves to play wit is favorite toys, a stuffed duck and flying squirrel, and goes to great lengts to keep tem away from Clovis, wo unstuffs tem if given te opportunity. He s one of te few dogs we know wo watces television intently, becoming very excited wen anoter dog comes on te screen. America s Funniest Videos is is favorite sow! Clovis is ysterical. I tink se believes se s te world s first female malamute comedian. Se talks all te time woo wooo, woo wooo! Se cases er tail, steals mittens and gloves, and as made te benc by our front door er personal perc from wic to overview te driveway (altoug se can see out te window perfectly fine wile standing on te floor). Se also loves to snuggle, but sometimes it s ard to stop wrestling wit Uter in order to devote time to er people! Hello, We adopted Dakota in August Se was scared of life and all of te new sounds around er (television, microwave, telepone). Getting er into te car was a figt because se turned into a statue, stiff as a board. Se as come a long way. Dakota as completed obedience training and can follow most commands se still does not like to come wen called, but no one is perfect. We ave taugt er to owl on command, a big it wit te family. Se now as a yard to run in and an entire ouse to roam. Se also as a idden talent Clovis te clown and Uter te cuddler. Togeter te two of tem ave made playing a full-time profession. We ave a big fenced yard and a dog door into te ouse. Tey do not distinguis between inside and te outside. Teir dog toys migrate in and out and we can ask tem were a particular toy is and tey ll go find it and bring it to us to play. Many of teir games involve running great loops around te yard, in troug te dog door, around and around te living room (wit Clovis literally flying over te furniture) down te all to te bedroom were tey make a giant U-turn on te bed, back landscaping. Se will bury anyting se can walk away wit; we keep a close eye on te recycle bin. Se enjoys getting up every morning at 6:30 to let us know it is time to eat, go out, and get er belly rubbed. We no longer ave a problem getting er into te car, and se may fall asleep during te ride. Dakota is quite friendly wit people, and se as even become friends wit our neigbor s cat, but as made it clear tat se does not like oter dogs. All in all, we would like to tank everyone at AMRONE for taking all of tese loving malamutes into teir omes and elping us bring Dakota into ours. Racel Boot and Bill Jarvis into te living room wit a few more bounces off te couc, ten out te dog door again! We ve considered contacting Barry & Elliot to see if tey d be interesting in doing a Jordan s Furniture ad featuring our dogs demonstrating just ow toug tat microfiber stuff really is! Tey also spend a lot of time outside in te wooded part of te fenced yard were tey ave several ongoing excavation projects. Sometimes tese projects creep out into te grassed section of te yard, but for te most part tey re content to dig in te woods. Tey love to go out to te front section of te fence tat faces te scool bus stop. In te morning Uter as a routine of watcing out te window for te kid down te street. Wen e sees te kid coming up te road e tells Clovis and te two of tem run out te dog door. By te time te kid gets to te bus stop tey re waiting to greet im good morning. We could not ask for better pack mates. Tey re loving, fun, entertaining and great companions. No matter ow tired we are after a day s work, we can t resist an invitation to tug on a rope or wrestle. Tat s got to be good for us! Tank you, AMRONE, for allowing us to adopt and sare our ome and lives wit tese beautiful, wonderful dogs! Donna & Steve Cusing

We love er very muc and tink tat se as fit perfectly into our lives Se continues to be gentle and somewat timid about noises. Se is certainly smart and also definitely into luxury. I don t tink se laid down in te ouse for more tan five minutes anywere until we figured out tat se didn t like er elbows resting on te ardwood floor. Se barely fit onto one of te kid s old beanbag cairs but used tat until my girlfriend, brougt over er Newfie s toosmall dog bed. Tat entrance was greeted wit a woof and a big plop onto te dog bed before se could even get it in te garage door! Miraculously Star as not eaten any of te stuffed fluffy toys yet. We ad a New Year s Eve party were we got to introduce Star to some of our friends and family. Star slept quietly troug most of te party and wen no small kids were left we let er out to meet te adults, wo were all totally carmed by er. At one point we walked into our formal living room to see Star cradled on te couc between two of our friends (I could claim innocence, a a), feet up in te air, er ead on a lap and er belly being rubbed by te person on te oter side. Wen tese people ad to leave, se remained and two friends wit cats took over as worsipers/ masseuses. Se was a perfect angel, so muc so tat all my friends ave volunteered to come stay wit er if we ever go away! 17 AMRONE Tales, Page 18 Pay attention to te kind and quality of food [From Page 2] tink about tis: Nestle Purina indicates tat cutting an average pet dog s daily food ration by 25 percent could extend a dog s life by more tan 20 percent. So in simple terms if you ave a 10-year-old dog and cut is normal tree cups a day down to 2 ¼ cups you will be adding two years onto te time you will be able to spend wit im! Many people ask wat kind of food te breeders and experienced malamute owners use. Te better question is to ask ow muc tey use. One breeder told me, Don t pay attention to wat it says on your dog s food bag. Use your dog as te measure of wat you feed. Wen I asked six active malamute kennel owners (between tem tey own over 60 mals) about feeding, tey all recommended buying te best food you can afford in a maintenance or performance variety. Maintenance is better for dogs tat don t exercise muc, need to lose weigt, are inside all te time and are regular pets. Performance food is for active dogs tat ave a job, are ard to keep weigt on or are outside a lot in te winter. Most of te owners switc teir dogs back and fort depending on te season, weter te dog needs to gain or lose weigt or is canging is activity level. All of te malamute owners feed teir females 2-3 cups a day and teir males 2-4 cups a day. Tey used a regular kitcen measuring cup, not a larger cup. One expert on malamute ealt ad tis to say: I weig my dogs every time tey go to te vet, wic we sometimes do even wen tey are not going for anyting in particular. (Tere s noting wrong wit stopping by te vet just to visit, weig, and get biscuits from te tecs.) No matter ow skilled you are at determining good weigt, it s still difficult to be accurate wit a malamute wo is in full coat. [Continued on Page 20] Try some of tese simple tips to elp your mal slim down Here are some common practices and tecniques tat migt elp your dog sed pounds. Go slowly. You want an overweigt dog to lose only about two pounds a mont until e is at te ideal weigt. Consult wit your vet before and after to make sure tere are no oter medical problems and tat your plan is rigt for your dog. Food Cut back. If you are feeding your malamute more tan 2-4 cups a day you migt be feeding too muc. Add oter tings to te food bowl if you feel guilty about te amount and if it does not upset your mal s stomac. Fres or frozen veggies are great. If you added canned beans ceck te salt content. Don t feed table scraps. Don t free-feed your dog. Put te bowl down and pick up wat as not been eaten in five minutes. Feed your dog more times during te day two to tree smaller meals instead of one big one. Feed quality dog food. Fat content of dry food sould range from 12 to 16 percent, wit sedentary dogs getting a lower percentage tan active or performance dogs. Do not add vegetable oil to your mal s food if your dog is overweigt. Snacks Always feed appropriate snacks and limit snacks if your mal needs to lose weigt. One of te malamute owners I spoke wit reminds us to not forget to subtract te equivalent of watever treats your giving im from is meals. If you give im two biscuits tat migt be te same in calories as a cup of dog food. Healty snacks could include baby carrots, rice cakes or biscuits cut into smaller pieces. Mals are great at asking for snacks; make sure your dog does not get treats from eac member of your family. Have a treat cart and mark down wen anyone treats te dog. You migt be surprised to find tat your mal as a wole extra meal or more eac day in treats. Experts advise to use treats to teac a new beavior or reward someting specific. Don t give a snack eac time e comes into te ouse. Exercise Provide prolonged exercise a few times a week. An our of sustained exercise per day is ideal, but anyting is better tan noting. If you are unable to give your dog prolonged exercise at least find a way to ave im move more. Will e case a ball? Maybe a local ig scool track team member would jog wit your dog a few times a week for a small fee. Be creative to get your dog moving. If you can t do a long workout ten ceck wit your vet to see if your dog could pull a tire or carry a backpack on your sorter walks to add to te workout.

AMRONE Tales, Page 19 In a game of musical sit, it pays to be well trained. Te last dog to sit wen te music stops is out. Puppies et al. come out at Bark By Susan Conant Some of te puppies AMRONE as elped during te past year ad a coming-out party at AMRONE s fift annual Bark in te Park on Sunday, May 7. Under clear, sunny skies at te Harold Parker State Forest in Nort Andover, MA, 73 people and 39 dogs gatered at te Berry Pond Picnic Area to enjoy wat is becoming AMRONE s family reunion. Twenty-eigt of te dogs were rescues. Many of tem sowed teir stuff in a splendid rescue parade. It was a special treat for everyone to see te puppies, including a few wo are now close to adult size. As always, attendees displayed malamute-size appetites in enjoying te delicious barbeque. Te more energetic iked around te pond, and everyone welcomed te good company of fellow dog lovers. Tis year s games were outstanding. Te tail-wagging contest was especially competitive, and te sigt of a big entry of appy dogs vigorously wagging teir beautiful plumy tails was a joy to spectators. Altoug Bark in te Park is a social event, it is also a fund-raiser. In tat respect, too, it was a great success. Te raffle items were numerous and varied. Sales of raffle tickets and AMRONE items, as well as registration fees, brougt in money needed for getting rescue malamutes ready for adoption. All of us owe tanks to everyone, especially te Ferragamo family, wo made tis year s Bark in te Park a big it. Katy and Jerry Ferragamo worked ard to organize everyting, and Jerry s broters, Paul and David, more tan pitced in. Because Paul s business, Building Supplies Outlet at 20 Webster St., Peabody, MA, sponsored Bark in te Park, all proceeds will go to AMRONE s rescue malamutes. Many tanks to Roger Davies for leading te ike; to Stepanie Bayliss for manning te AMRONE store and raffle table; to Rut Ellis for organizing te games and collecting bag after bag of malamute air for AMRONE s spinning project; to everyone wo donated raffle items; to te volunteers wo cecked people in and wo elped to set up and clean up; and, of course, to te wonderful people and te deligtful dogs of all breeds wose attendance made May 7 a great day. Raffle winner Donald Borek claims is prize, above. Many folks and dogs enjoyed te great day, below.

AMRONE Tales, Page 20 Watc beavior for signs of unealty weigt gain [From Page 18] Se mentioned tat as a general guideline, you sould be able to feel te dog s ribs witout aving to dig. If you can t feel is ribs or is ip bones, e is too fat. You sould be able to see tuck up under te belly and a waist from te top. Also monitor beavior. A previously energetic mal wo is turning into a couc potato at 2 years old migt be gaining too muc weigt. A dog tat pants excessively wit exertion or eat may be too fat. How can you get an overweigt dog to lose weigt? Te malamute owners tat I spoke wit all said most mals get fat because of a combination of not enoug exercise and too muc food. So wat are some of te tings tey do to slim teir dogs? Most said tey increase teir malamutes exercise level and cut back on food. None of te owners canged to a diet food. One person said, I don t recommend diet foods for dogs. Purina researcers ave publised data tat indicate a iger-protein food will elp dogs lose weigt better tan te low-protein, low-fat stuff tat is usually marketed as diet food. In our kennel, we simply feed less of our normal ig-quality food. Wen I asked a local vet about tis e said tat diet foods are not all tey are cracked up to be. He said tat to elp a dog lose weigt you sould cange te tings in is life tat made im fat. If e is ealty te type of food is probably not te problem. Te problem is usually a discrepancy between te amount of food compared to te amount of calories e burns off (exercise). Obese dogs suffer from poorer ealt and a reduced ability to run and play, and even to breate. Overweigt malamutes can be more irritable due to being cronically ot, in pain or simply uncomfortable. Overweigt mals die younger tan tose at an optimum weigt. We control our dogs weigt. Tey ave to count on us for tis, but Americans are letting teir dogs down. Be committed to giving your dog extra years of life or at te very least active, ealty years. Look carefully at your dog today and implement some canges if you see tat your buddy is getting cubby.
