3 Oio Wildlife History Te information in above table was compiled by Mike Moutoux of te Oio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife, drawing primarily on two sources, A Guide to te Mammals of Oio by Jack L. Gottscang, and Te Birds of Oio, by Peterjon and Zimmerman. Information for 2012 was added by Linda Sigismondi. Additional info: Barn owls appeared in Oio after muc of te forests were cleared for agriculture. Population peaked in s. Population declined after late 140 s wen farming switced from ay and meadow to corn and soybeans. Barn owls are now endangered. Swans were killed for meat and plummage. Trumpeter swans and eggs are collected from Alaska. Cleveland Zoo and Wilds participate in olding. Ospreys wiped out by abitat destruction and wide-spread use of cemical pesticides Bald Eagle low due to pesticide use. Population reaced a low of 4 breeding pairs in 1. House sparrows brougt from Europe to Brooklyn to control caterpillars Starlings and Sakespeare - In a drug manufacturer named Eugene Sceiffelin decided tat New York sould be ome to all Sakespeare's songbirds. About 0 birds were imported from England in te s in an effort to represent te avian cast of Sakespeare's plays in tis country (). Te starling s ability to mimic uman speec earned te bird tis cameo in Sakespeare s Henry IV: Te king forbade my tongue to speak of Mortimer. But I will find im wen e is asleep, and in is ear I ll oller Mortimer! Nay I ll ave a starling sall be taugt to speak noting but Mortimer, and give it to im to keep is anger still in motion. It is te only mention of te starling in all of Sakespeare. Yet it was enoug to inspire Sciffelin to import 0 of te fruitful birds to te United States and release tem one Marc day in New York s Central Park. We now ave 200 million.
