1 Martin Conneaut Lake Bark Park Newsletter Volume 8 Issue 1 January, 2016 New Year s Resolutions for Dogs 2016 I will try not to hog the entire bed at night when you are sleeping I will beg less every time my owner is eating. I will recognize the difference between indoor furniture and outdoor fire hydrants and trees. I will not find snack items in the cat s litter box I ll introduce myself in more appropriate ways when someone comes to visit my owners I won t drink from the toilet even if the lid is left open I will come when you call me, that is, most of the time I ll remember the garbage collector is NOT stealing our stuff I will stop trying to find the few remaining pieces of clean carpet in the house when I am about to throw up. I will not roll on dead animals, on duck poop, or dead fish I will not lick my human s face after eating animal poop. Even though we do not have a doorbell, I will not bark each time I hear one on TV. I will not steal food off the kitchen counter. I will not take Kleenex, paper towels, and personal hygiene items out of the waste cans. I will remember the sofa is not my own private face towel. 3 Therapy Dog Testing January 23, 2016 Become part of Paws Hand Delivered/Alliance of Therapy Dogs and share your special canine companion with those in a variety of situations around the community. The 65+ therapy dogs are involved in sharing their special love with individuals through-out Crawford County and Mercer County. To be tested, a dog must be at least one year of age. Information on our testing procedure can be found on the web at for Alliance of Therapy Dogs, formerly Therapy Dogs Incorporated, located in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The next testing date is scheduled for Saturday, January 23rd, beginning at 11:30 am. at Conneaut Lake Bark Park, East Side, Conneaut Lake. Interested dog owners must schedule an appointment time to be tested. To schedule an appointment for testing contact Robin Peterson at (814) For additional general information on therapy dogs and the testing procedure, contact Sue at (814) My Dog Is Driving Me Crazy Instructor Robin Peterson, Red Ball Dog Academy This seminar offers an opportunity for the dog owner to find out answers to those puzzling problems on dog ownership. Topics will include curbing bad doggie behavior, crate issues, behavior warning signs, proper play, leash aggression, socializing your dog, and most any other questions presented by those in attendance. This is a two hour seminar, on January 23 rd, 9:00 am 11:00 am. and will be held at the Dog House at the Bark Park on Foust Road. The cost is $10.00 and includes plenty of coffee and donuts. Pre-registration is required due to limited seating space. Start Training the Christmas Puppy Now Regardless of a dog's breed, size, or age, every dog can benefit from good leadership, household rules, exercise, and training. Whether your training goal is to have a high-scoring obedience competitor or a dog that is a well-mannered family member, the fundamental ingredient for success is the same. A well trained dog is a happy dog and a joy to have as a family member. Positive training is fun and well worth the effort for two-footed and four-footed family members alike. The next training sessions for Red Ball Dog Academy begin on January Classes are held at Station 2 Fire Hall, Rte 18 North, East Side, Conneaut Lake. 4 Dog License-----It s the Law in Pennsylvania All dogs three months of age or older must have a current year dog license. All dogs and cats over 3 months of age must be vaccinated against rabies. A dog license application is available at the courthouse and at various locations through-out the county. Below is a list of prices for a dog license in Pennsylvania A. Male dog $8.50 B. Neutered Male $6.50 C. Female $8.50 D. Spayed female $6.50. There is a reduced fee for person with a disability or senior citizen. If you are applying for a license that requires the dog owner to be a senior citizen, 65 or older, or a person with disability, you cannot get the license at a satellite location but must provide proof of age or disability to the County Treasurer, located at the courthouse. A. Male $6.50 B. Neutered male $4.50 C. Female $6.50 D. Spayed Female $4.50 Some people choose to purchase a lifetime license for their dog. The computer chip size of grain of rice, and is inserted between the shoulder blades. The cost is generally $ $40.00 for a dog to be micro-chipped and an additional charge for have the microchip registered. To have a dog micro-chipped, you must have a permanent identification verification form from usually a vet, etc., indicating tattoo # or microchip #. Microchips have various companies associated with vet offices and you are expected to register your microchip number with the company for identification if the dog is lost. Prices for lifetime licenses are listed below. 5 The little bad brown dog that isn t! by Melanie Redford Willow is my 1 year old Belgian Malinois. She is my crazy, high energy, mad cap gal, whose brain and feet never stop. It is true what they say. Malinois are not for everyone. After hours of day care, we go home and train, we do fun stuff, she plays with her other house mates, my 4 Belgian Tervurens. She will chase the cat. She has destroyed beds and toys. I have some drywall that needs replacing. Her feet really do never stop. Even when on the couch lying next to me she is rolling around, playing bity face and sticking her feet in all kinds of places. And it s not just that her feet never stop, it s always at mach speed. Crate doors, the back door, the car door, the gates to fenced in areas. So why do I enjoy living with all this mad energy. She is the sweetest girl, she has an amazing temperament, I can thank her breeder for that. I have socialized, we go places. Willow loves everyone. You can turn the crazy up or down, it doesn t go away, but she does sleep, eventually. The breed is incredibly smart, funny, energy galore but will remain loyal, a true loving working companion until the day they are done. They will give you their all, even if you don t ask for it.

6 From the Red Barn FRIENDS 2015 was definitely a banner year for A4E and its Artists. The RED BARN STUDIO saw, once again, a record number of visitors from all over the planet. A number of new Participating Artists joined us, and we bid adieu to others. The number of gallery areas which I (George) service at our regional hospital multiplied considerably an honor which bespeaks the positive affect of visual Art as an environmental stress-reducing agent. In addition, over the course of the past year, several of us have pondered and examined the course of development for I, along with the agreement of the A4E Artists, have decided to totally revamp the concept of the RED BARN. In the coming year, much GREATER attention will be paid to the development of weekly demonstrations by our Artists, as well as to the further refinement of A4E Class Offerings. Less attention will be paid to the Barn as a store, and more attention to the original concept of a working Community of Artists. Further attention will also be paid to the increased involvement in regional community projects and events. In this vein, the concept of expanding the number of locales for A4E Artist demonstrations is being considered. This increased visibility will attempt to support community organizations and events. Similarly, further increased involvement and support of two incredible programs will occur. These two programs are: The VISON OF HOPE event originating through the Pennsylvania Council Against Rape, and spearheaded locally by MMC s Chief Medical Officer, DENISE JOHNSON, M.D. The WOUNDED VETZ program and event, sponsored by Meadville s ICC, and spearheaded by Mr. Jim Bird and his Board. Hopefully, many other local and regional Artists will become involved with us in support of these two programs. Details can be provided by contacting me (George) through the means listed below. SO there is a LOT going to happen in the coming year!
