4 A G I L I T Y MORE SUCCESSES AT TRIALS With cooler weather, agility trialing is in full swing. We see record entry numbers including a couple of trials with over 900 runs. People are wondering where and when the 1,000 entry mark will be reached. Perhaps our club s trial in October will be the one. KODC members have had so many passes at recent agility trials we cannot detail them all here. But there were some highlights to report. Our members have been excelling in Open Jumping. Norman Morcom s mini poodle Crystal earned a remarkable 1st place in Open Jumping on 26 April at KCC Park. Crystal was the only one of the 43 entrants (including many of Victoria s most credentialed dogs) to complete the course without a fault. Then at the Croydon trial in May, in one Open Jumping event Greg Stone s aussie shepherd Nelson was also the only dog out of 46 entrants to have a faultless run. The other Open Jumping event at the Croydon trial gave KODC a quinella, with Bianca s Onyx taking 1st place while Kane s Esky came 2nd. Marilyn & Nick Kirchner s standard poodle Lady has also been performing beautifully. At the Croydon trial, Lady qualified for both Novice Agility and Novice Jumping titles. Six days earlier Lady had completed her Rally Advanced title also. Alois Schnider and Chloe have scored a rare hat-trick. They won 1st Place in Excellent Jumping at the Easter trial. Then a week later they repeated the feat at KCC Park. And a week after that they came 1st again in the event at Ballarat. To top it off, their run at Ballarat earned them the prize for the fastest jumping dog in the whole day s trialing. Stephanie Hirst has had a wonderful few weeks. At the Altona trial on Easter Saturday her sheltie Penny achieved 1st place in Excellent Jumping and also additional passes to gain her Novice Agility and Novice Snooker titles. Penny went on to gain her Excellent Jumping title the following weekend. Then at the Croydon trial in May, in their first outing at Masters level, Stephanie and Penny had faultless runs in 2 of their 3 Jumping events. At the Ballarat trial, Kane Wheeler and Esky achieved perfect clean runs in 5 out of their 6 events. No wonder they re in the Victorian State Agility Team to compete at the Nationals in Brisbane in June. The team s uniforms have the following graphic printed on the back.

5 N E W S OLD IN YEARS BUT YOUNG AT HEART Hollie Edwards golden retriever Darcy is nearly 12 years old. That s about 84 in human years. But no-one has told him it s time to just sit back and watch the other dogs play. At the Anzac weekend trial Darcy gained 3rd place in Master Gamblers when he picked up his paws and performed like a dog half his age. Darcy is semi-retired from agility trials but he s told Hollie he hates being left out of the fun and loves the lower-stress action of agility games like gamblers, snooker and strategic pairs. BEGINNERS LEARN TO AVOID CONFUSION We ve seen some great progress from members who have recently decided to introduce their dogs to the challenge and fun of agility. After a dog understands the basics of each type of apparatus, handlers are finding that in a twisty sequence confusion can be the major enemy, and it s usually not the dog s fault. A fundamental of all dog obedience training is sending clear unambiguous signals to your dog. We humans often mistakenly voice an instruction to a dog while simultaneously signalling something quite different with our bodies. Your voice, hand movements and body motion should all be signalling the same thing. It s especially important in agility because the dog doesn t know in advance whether they are going to be sent left, right, forward, or back where they came from, and the dog doesn t have the luxury of time to consider the options. You ll see experienced handlers spend a lot of time practising different positioning so their voice, hands, shoulder rotation and direction of travel all send the same message. THIS NEVER HAPPENED When Nola went away for a weekend she left strict instructions with Norman that young Pearl was not allowed to do any agility because (he was told) it s detrimental to her heeling. You see Pearl is trialling for her CCD obedience title. When heeling in obedience trials, a dog should remain as close as possible on your left hand side, whereas in agility you get your dog to work further away and on both sides. So this photo of Norman with Pearl appears to show something that never happened. A mediator for Norman suggested the image could have been photoshopped, with Pearl being expertly substituted for another dog. After all, he argued, could a miniature poodle really fly that high? If that excuse holds up Norman, maybe you can fly pigs even higher.

6 EVENT UPDATES KODC members at the NVSDC races Three teams of the huskies and their owners were off racing at the NVSDC (Northern Victorian Sled Dog Club Inc.) races at Kingower, Victoria during the weekend of 17 and 18th of May. Scott Bennets with Teyah won first place in the Canicross and third place in the Novice race. David Devlin with Bree in the 1dog race and Anna Myers with Czar & Mischa in the 2 dog race were our other two teams. What is Canicross? Canicross is basically cross country running with your dog. It has developed from the origins of skijoring, where people ski with their dog pulling out in front of them. Canicross is a sport that can be enjoyed by any breed of dog, whether you, the runner, are male or female, and any age. If you d like to compete in canicross you will need to get a special canicross harness for your dog to wear and many runners invest in a Walking or Canicross Belt. This is worn around the waist, and allows the lines to the harness to be clipped directly onto the belt. This leaves the runners hands free to run properly! You will also need to use a bungee line, which includes a shock absorber. These bungee lines absorb and protect the dog and runner from any sudden jarring. Many of the sledding clubs run Canicross events in conjunction with sledding races. For more information, ask any of the Husky owners at club!

Beware of the Dog Upon entering a small country store, a stranger noticed a sign saying DANGER! BEWARE OF DOG! posted on the glass door. Inside a harmless old hound dog was asleep on the floor besides the cash register. He asked the store manager, Is that the dog folks are supposed to beware of? Yep, that s him, he replied. The amused stranger inquired, That certainly doesn t look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign? The owner responded, Because, before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him.

11 YELLOW BANDANAS The Knox Obedience Dog Club has available Yellow Bandanas to identify dogs that may need a bit of space around them. The reason for needing one could be: Nervousness Recovery from an operation (i.e.: convalescing) Unsociable to people or other dogs When approaching a yellow bandana dog please make sure your dog doesn t go running up to it freely, just as the handler of the yellow bandana dog should be mindful of the space around their dog at all times. So if you feel your dog needs to be given their own space, then go to the office and obtain a bandana for the day. Please return them when you have finished, so that other dogs can have their turn. AVOID DOGS TIED UP AND IN CRATES You may have noticed that some members and instructors who use the Competition Obedience and Agility rings leave their dogs unattended, either in a crate or tied up, while they are working or helping other members. PLEASE AVOID LETTING YOUR DOG APPROACH ANY DOG THAT IS LEFT UNATTENDED.
