EDITOR S REPORT I couldn t help but notice this week, as my alarm sounded each morning, a little more light creeping through the curtains. The dogs have certainly noticed and have been up and ready to go well before I am recently. I don t think they quite understand how cold it is for us relatively hairless humans. What a great month it s been at KODC. Not only have we had a number of members report successfully achieving various titles, we also had a great turn out for our special guest, Elke Effler. Elke provided a wonderful insight into the challenging world of the search and rescue dog, and kept the crowd enthralled with tales of training events around the globe and a detailed report on a local search mission. Coming up in August we have the RSPCA Cupcake Day coming up on Sunday, 17th August, and KODC will be offering cupcakes for sale to help raise money for this great cause. Remember to bring along a few dollars so you can buy your pooch a doggie friendly cupcake or two. All proceeds are going towards the RSPCA. 3 EVENING WITH ELKE EFFLER Knox Obedience Dog Club was very privileged to have Elke Effler and her German Shepherd, Jochen, join us for an entertaining evening talking about Search and Rescue. Elke described the training routine that she has developed for her dogs. This included how to encourage barking, digging, and leaping over obstacles all the things that dog owners come to a training club to find out how to stop! There were many photos and video s showing dogs in training, and in all videos there were madly wagging tails and happy, excited dogs. Elke detailed the rewards that are used in the training starting with food, and progressing to toys, unless working with a Labrador or Golden Retriever, then you stick to what works best - FOOD!! Elke makes sure all the fun comes from the person that the dog has found, rather than the handler, as this encourages the dog to want to find the hidden person. Elke related all the training that they do back to the lessons we are learning at club. The dog must learn to heel nicely and calmly to the search site. The dog must have a good recall, as all searching is done off lead, with no collars, vests, or harnesses as these could get snagged on rubble. Elke emphasised how the Agility that is done at club focuses on speed however, for a search and rescue dog slower is better. With a Tracking Dog, we encourage the dogs to sniff the ground to follow the scent of the tracklayer, however a search and rescue dog will also use air scenting to help locate the missing people. The highlight of the evening was Elke s presentation on her expedition to Kosciusko, to find a lost snowboarder. The scenery in the photos was magnificent, the stories were both funny and sad. Elke then showed us photos from her trip with Jochen to Switzerland, again, the scenery was stunning! All through the evening, the beautiful Jochen was roaming around, quietly saying hello to each person in the room. It was one of the best evenings we have had at the club!

Our friends wanted a new big TV. They had been following the prices in the catalogues. They knew the TV they wanted I told to go with their price to Bayswater Good Guys on Canterbury Road next to spotlight. They got a great price, saved over $200 from the catalogue price. And they remember me tell them about the Good Guys doing Bayswater Bucks for community clubs. I had told them that Knox Obedience Dog Club was registered with them, so when they paid for the TV the Club got a $182 voucher. So next time you need to buy some electrical items, give The Good Guys in Bayswater a go, and don t forget to say we would like to have the Bayswater Bucks for the Knox Obedience Dog Club. Then just hand the voucher to Kitchen ladies and the Club can get some great Raffle prizes for this year with your help. Margaretha Vice president
A G I L I T Y A LONG-LEGGED LADY S SUCCESSES then spotted being handled in the agility ring by Alois and later Norman, who have both been ditched leaving them heatbroken. Everyone has been wondering who was going to be next on her list of conquests. Lady is now regularly seen back with her chaperone Marilyn. But Lady s workouts with Alois and Norman may have given her additional zest to perform. Within a 1-month period Lady has qualified for no less than 4 titles, two of them in agility categories and two in obedience. Lady gained her Community Companion Dog (CCD) and Rally Novice (RN) titles handled by Nick and her Novice Agility (AD) and Novice Jumping (JD) titles with Marilyn. Over past months this column has reported on the various dalliances of Marilyn Kirchner s leggy standard poodle Lady. Having received her foundation training from Nick and Marilyn, Lady was Lady s clearly multi-talented. Rumour has it that tracking might soon be on her education programme. We wonder what conquests the seductress may make there. MORE CHANGES PROPOSED TO AGILITY RULES The seemingly endless changes to rules continue. The Agility Committee of Dogs Victoria has proposed a number of changes to the ANKC rules governing agility trials and the granting of agility titles to dogs. The most relevant changes proposed are: See-saws of two different heights would be used for smaller and larger dogs. The number of passes to qualify for a Novice title would increase from 3 to 5, and for an Excellent title would increase from 5 to 7. All sharp corners would need to be removed from the bar supports on jump uprights. The slope and height of the A-frame would be reduced. The height of the weave poles would be reduced. These are only proposals at this stage and perhaps not all will be accepted. The changes proposed by each State are presently being considered by the other States and a final decision will be made in February It s expected any changes would take effect from 1 January We will report as further news becomes available. RAIN, HAIL OR SHINE We ve had a few cold, wet Sunday mornings for training this year, but generally the showers have been only brief and training has continued regardless. The agility area is slippery however so training has often concentrated on activities and techniques that don t require sharp turns. There s been a huge influx to the agility class at beginner level during July despite the cold and wet weather. We have quite a few hardy souls who like to keep both themselves and their dogs warm with the fun activity. Whether running around practicing agility, or any other activity, remember - in Melbourne s relatively benign climate there s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. And finally be thankful for those masochistic club members who have been down at the clubhouse and training areas at 7am in the dark each Sunday to set up.
N E W S MIDGETS RULE OK? Each year at KCC Park the Schipperke Club of Victoria holds an agility trial restricted to smaller dogs. It covers all breeds up to about the size of a sheltie or papillon who jump at a 200mm or 300mm height. This year three KODC members entered and all came home with at least one First Prize. Although the entries in each event were understandably lower than in fully open trials, there were up to 28 competitors in the events so competition was still strong. Nicole Wain with Kimba was also particularly successful, earning First Place for their run in Novice Agility. Kimba has a good splash of attitude, and Nicole should be congratulated for her joyful patience when training such an independently minded dog to success. Starring at the trial was Stephanie Hirst with her sheltie Penny who gained First Place in both Excellent Agility and Excellent Snooker and also won the special prize for the Fastest in Agility over the whole day. Our third team, Norman Morcom with miniature poodle Crystal, gained First Place in Excellent Gamblers. FINDING GOLD AND COLD AT BENDIGO The weather for the Bendigo trial this year was cold for both the Saturday and Sunday. At last year s trial it rained steadily on both days, but this year the rain held off. However it was cold during the days and dropped to well below zero overnight. That made it a bit uncomfortable for those who camped on site. And it brought an unusual situation in the morning all the equipment carefully set up the night before now had a solid layer of hard ice on it. Attempts to remove the ice only saw it reform in the cold air. The start of Sunday s events was delayed for 45 minutes until the ice had melted so the equipment became safe to use. In other events silver went to Stephanie with Penny, Greg again with Nelson and Alois with Chloe. Bronze went to Stephanie, Greg, Bianca and Alois. So we had many multi-medal winners over the weekend. The cold of the weather was overcome by the warmth of success. The Bendigo club followed their practice of presenting medals, Olympic-style, for first, second and third place winners. Gold went to Greg Stone with his Aussie shepherd Nelson in Open Agility, to Norman Morcom with his miniature poodle Crystal in Masters Pairs, and to Alois Schnider with his border collie Chloe in Excellent Jumping.
AGILITY NEWS SPECIAL REPORT ONYX DEPLOYS SECRET WEAPON Bianca Delahoy s miniature poodle Onyx has been showing a stunning level of jumping control which has led to outstanding success at agility trials. Many questions have been raised as to Bianca s training secret. In an exclusive report we now reveal Onyx s secret advantage. He uses his ears as wings to get extra lift and manoeuvrability at high speed! Onyx is so fast over jumps, and the trick happens so quickly, that the human eye cannot pick it up. It s only through high speed photography that the secret has been revealed. In the photo of Onyx you can see how his ears are lifting his head and he s dipping his right ear to turn to the right in mid-air! Bianca has been unavailable for comment but we understand she was inspired by canard winglets at the front of the latest aircraft. You can clearly see the similarity from the photos. It s taken Bianca many months of intensive secret training to get Onyx to imagine using his ears to greatest advantage. If the ears are deployed at an incorrect angle Onyx goes into an uncontrollable spin. Thankfully he has proven to be very resilient in crashes. Could a whole new training regime now arise so other dogs can harness this extra advantage? Could a selective breeding campaign, or even surgery, be undertaken to make the most of possible improvements in ear shape and length? Do people believe everything they read?
NEWS SNIPPETS Nicole socks em with a 1-2 punch Nicole Wain and her two dogs Kimba and Max gave em the old 1-2 in Rally Excellent A at the Geelong trial. Kimba gained First Place and Max was Second. It was fitting that such a successful day also gave Kimba her Rally Excellent title. Pip s Perfect Pooch Performance Susan Scott s Pip gave a flawless performance in Rally-O at the Hastings trial in June. Pip and Susan scored the much sought after, but rarely awarded, perfect 100 points in Rally Excellent B. Pip of course also carried off First Place. That was the highlight in a day when Pip also passed in CCD, winning Second Place. Susan said All their stars were aligned that day. At the Geelong trial in July, Susan and Pip backed up their Hastings triumph by passing in both Rally Excellent B and Rally Advanced B in the morning trial, and then passing them both again on different courses in the afternoon trial. 11 YELLOW BANDANAS The Knox Obedience Dog Club has available Yellow Bandanas to identify dogs that may need a bit of space around them. The reason for needing one could be: Nervousness Recovery from an operation (i.e.: convalescing) Unsociable to people or other dogs When approaching a yellow bandana dog please make sure your dog doesn t go running up to it freely, just as the handler of the yellow bandana dog should be mindful of the space around their dog at all times. So if you feel your dog needs to be given their own space, then go to the office and obtain a bandana for the day. Please return them when you have finished, so that other dogs can have their turn. AVOID DOGS TIED UP AND IN CRATES You may have noticed that some members and instructors who use the Competition Obedience and Agility rings leave their dogs unattended, either in a crate or tied up, while they are working or helping other members. PLEASE AVOID LETTING YOUR DOG APPROACH ANY DOG THAT IS LEFT UNATTENDED.
