2 A Message From the President Let s Celebrate the Holidays! I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our holiday party. Marion Israel picked out a wonderful assortment of blooming plants that I am sure everyone will enjoy. I will bring music to make it very festive, and if the mood strikes you, feel free to dance. The winner of this year s Irene Schwarz Memorial Award for Outstanding Service will be announced at the party. So don t miss it. Marion bought a few extra plants so if you find that you can come to the party on December 12th please let Anita know so she can add you to the count and give her a check for $30 when you arrive. The NJOS show committee is busy preparing for the show. We still need people to volunteer to help at the show. There are lots of things you can to do, see Carrie s list on page 5. All we ask is that you put in two hours on either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Please speak to Anita Gibaldi or Carrie Buchman if interested. Please volunteer before the two of them corner you and twist your arm. All of our members are invited to the opening day reception on January 17, 2014 at Strawberry Blossom at 6:00 pm. The attendees will cast a vote for the best 2 x 2 display. The winner gets a trophy. Richard C. bowringiana coerulea x Lc. CG Roebling Blue Magic, Anne & Dave Safarawitz NJOS Show Workshops Fri. 3 Vice Presidents Corner, Greetings fellow Orchid Geeks! Winter is finally here but with all the odd warm and cool patches many of my regular bloomers are quite confused. Things that are normally decked out for the Holiday (my big white Phal for instance) is only in spike and may not be ready for our big show in January. We will see. I like to use this period of time when the plants are slowly going into rest mode to take a long look at the collection and plan for the coming season. I like the fact that most plants only need weekly watering and soon some will be every other week or not until we see new growth develop. Knowing your collection and their watering and cultural needs is something I am still dealing with but I think I get a little better every year. As we continue to look forward to the January show and sale I want to thank all of you who have volunteered your time with set up and knock down as well as spending time during the show to greet, and be an ambassador for orchids. We had a good start to signing up in November. For those of you who did not sign up yet we still need a LOT of help. More signup sheets will be available during our holiday party and I am sure someone will tap you on the shoulder and ask where you can fit in. Remember that this society works well when we ALL work well. Garden clubs, orchid societies and other sacred and civic organizations are only as good as the members who pitch in to help. During this joyous Holiday season may the gift of volunteering be a big part of your vision for this season and for I look forward to seeing you all at our Holiday party. If you will not be joining us, I would like to take this time to wish you a Happy Hanukah and a Joyous Christmas. Happy Growing! The Gadget corner By Bill Stender Every Month I will try to highlight some gadget or gizmo that makes raising orchids a little easier. It could be as easy as razor blades or very technical. Do you have a favorite gadget? me at wstender@10-31.com and tell me about it! Avid Miticide I thought I was a good orchid grower and kept on top of every little beasty that could bother my babies. It has been hard to get a grasp on insect, pathogens and other naughty things that plagued the collection and I really thought I had seen it all. Then I was told I had mites. Who knew that regular insecticides did not kill these 8 legged creatures from hell? Now that we have brought our collections inside and everything is dry and toasty warm, it seems that this is the PERRFECT habitat for mites. If you want to read a very good and short article on mites, look in the October issue of the AOS Bulletin. If you don t get the bulletin, then JOIN AOS! (Sorry, that s a topic for another corner) There are a few good and benign ways to treat small outbreaks of mites, but once they get a big foothold in a 50+ plant collection (I am up to about 150) sometimes you need to bring out the big guns. Recently Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids suggested a miticide called AVID. After I did some research it seemed like one of the top three choices so I decided to buy some. Well I had two problems. The first was absolute sticker shock. At about $100 for 8 ounces I was wondering if I could afford the solution. The second was that you only needed ½ oz. to make a gallon up. I finally found smaller amounts for less money and I bought 2 oz. I hope this will curb my mite problems in the future. Looks like I have one more thing to add to the regimen of sprays and feedings Page 3 DECEMBER 2013

5 We still need you! We still need volunteers to help set up and run the NJOS show & sale in January. It s only 1 month away! We need help with the Welcome Desk which involves greeting people when they arrive, distributing printed orchid culture sheets, encouraging membership in NJOS or their local orchid Society, and managing the twice-a-day plant raffle. Who doesn t like giving away free stuff? We re serving more Food than ever; so help is especially needed setting up lunch and the reception on Friday. Are you coming to the reception? Can you come a little early and help set up? We also still need Clerks for the show judging on Friday morning. Come and be paired up with judges and other clerks; learn more about the orchids you so dearly love. Are you at all handy? Can you help with the venue setup? We need people to set up tables & chairs as well as build out the venue layout for all the exhibits and vendor areas. We also need people to groom plants and help set up our own exhibit - all on Wednesday. Then on Thursday, be an NJOS ambassador and help vendors and other exhibitors set up and get organized. Get a preview of what s being sold and maybe put a few on hold. We still need show guides. Can small group through the show you share your orchid knowledge and walk a for 15 to 20 minutes? Please come and be an active part of our annual Show & Sale! Page 5 DECEMBER 2013

7 Hello North Jersey Orchid Society, Well it is that time again time for the Northeast Judging Center Auction and Holiday Party. This year s party will take place on Saturday, December 21 st, at the Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens. This is the only function that supports your judging center. It s the place where plants can be awarded and the place that provides the judging personnel for your Show. As usual, the judges and select vendors will be offering the special and unusual. A buffet lunch will be provided. Some miniatures will be offered for sale and we will revive the successful Silent Auction table we had last year. We encourage you to join us for this very special event. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact me. Diana Kleiman Dkleiman7@comcast.net Lc. 11 NORTH JERSEY ORCHID SOCIETY RULES FOR 2 X 2 EXHIBITS Philosophy: We are encouraging the participation of all members of societies to exhibit in the show. The original concept of orchid shows was for all of us to show off our plants. We work hard to grow them and we should show them off! We recognize that home orchid growers often have limits on what they can have available to exhibit. Therefore, we have opened a new exhibit class the 2 ft. X 2 ft. pedestal exhibit. The rules for this exhibit class are listed below: 1. The exhibit is to contain 1 to no more than 5 flowering orchid plants. 2. No other flowering plants are allowed. 3. Imagination in design is strongly encouraged. 4. Plants for consideration for ribbons or AOS award will be entered as usual. 5. First, second, and third place ribbons for the exhibits will be awarded by voting done by the attendees of the Preview Party. 6. The exhibitor receiving the highest number of votes will receive a special award. 7. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Preview Party. RULES FOR 2 X 2 EXHIBITS of MINIATURE ORCHIDS The rules for this exhibit class are listed below: 1. The exhibit is to contain 1 to no more than 10 flowering orchid plants. 2. No other flowering plants are allowed. 3. All plants must be less than 6 inches tall; Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedulums, Vandeous and other plants measured by leaf span must also be less than 6 inches in leaf span. 4. Imagination in design is strongly encouraged. 5. Plants for consideration for ribbons or AOS award will be entered as usual. 6. First, second, and third place ribbons for the exhibits will be awarded by voting done by the attendees of the Preview Party. 7. The exhibitor receiving the highest number of votes will receive a special award. 8. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Preview Party. 10 Reasons Why You Should Clerk At The NJOS Show 1. It s fun. 2. Be where the action is. 3. Up close to spectacular blooming orchids. 4. Good exercise. 5. Learn to identify different orchids. 6. Meet people from other societies. 7. Make friends with AOS judges. 8. Learn the characteristics of an orchid that judges look for when awarding. 9. Be involved in the decision process of awarding ribbons. 10. Free food. Please sign up for clerking. You will have a good time. Page 11 DECEMBER 2013
