The BACKCSC 12 th Annual Specialty is less than 3 months away!!!! As an AKC breed club, holding a Specialty completely fulfills the purpose of our club. We are fortunate to be able to hold such a show, and we honored by the caliber of dogs that continue to be entered in our Specialty. Even if you are only a pet person, attending the specialty is a wonderful way to support our club and to support and learn more about the breed. After holding 11 shows, we ve gotten to be old hands at this, but this year, I hope we can rediscover the thrill and excitement of putting on such an event.! The weekend begins Friday afternoon with a Welcome Reception at our Host Hotel the Residence Inn Pleasanton. This is a good chance to mingle with the exhibitors and club members. A presentation on the Breed Standard immediately follows the reception. This is always a popular topic and fills up quickly.!! For the past few years, our show has been an independent specialty as part of the Harvest Moon Classic. Friday, Sunday, and Monday were all breed shows; but, Saturday was reserved completely for breed specialties. Last year it became clear to the Del Valle Kennel Club that this was no longer economically feasible, so this year Saturday is not just for specialties. Our show will be held in the same building as the past few years (the Agricultural Building), and we can have a relaxed show with our own time frame. However, Del Valle will be holding an all breed show that day as well, and now our show is considered a designated specialty instead of an independent specialty.! There are a few changes in conjunction with holding a designated show. We won t have our own premium or catalog. INSIDE THIS ISSUE President s Message...1 A Word from Willie...2 Rescue Updates...3 Litter Bits & Championships, etc...4, 5, 6 Very Special Passages...7 Tidbits...8 President s Message, con t...9 Editors Note and Club Calendar...10 AKC Code of Sportsmanship

2 A Word from Willie... A Word from Willie... "Before the game is afoot, thou still let's slip." Shakespeare s King Henry IV, part1 (1597) Dear Cavalier friends, Today s column is about an obedience trial that was held the weekend before July 4, 2013, in Mt Vernon, WA. I was there. My mom entered us in Novice B obedience, which means I am new to this game, but Mom has been there before. In this case, I was following in the footsteps of Webber the Wise, who must have been an awesome obedience competitor. There are some hefty ribbons hanging in the hall here that attest to that. But I digress. I am no stranger to dog shows in the conformation ring. In fact I won Winners Dog on Saturday and Best of Winners on Sunday at that show. A fine weekend! But I was also entered in my first Novice obedience trial. I have a Rally Novice title, which was accomplished quickly and relatively easily. This was really different this obedience stuff. Mom and I trained a lot. I love the click-treat combo, and I worked hard to get those treats. We practiced in the living room, the family room, on the deck, and in the driveway. I learned to heel, sit-stay, down-stay (even when Mom disappeared for a bit), stand-stay, come when called, finish around into position, and do figure 8 s around cones. Maybe I wasn t as precise as Mom would like, but I was doing pretty darn well, if you know what I mean. After awhile, Mom only gave me treats SOME of the time, but I kept on practicing. Sometimes I did those tricks without anyone asking me, just to prove I knew how to do them! I especially like the down-stay, because all I have to do is lie there and I get treats. Pretty cool! I heard Mom tell Dad as we were leaving that she knew we probably wouldn t qualify in the new surroundings, but it would be good to know what we needed to work on. I guess she had taken Webber to classes for practice, but we don t have any here on the island, so we haven t done that. No big deal I knew what to do. Fast forward to the show. It was 86 degrees, outdoors, in the sun, on grass, and...the smells! At first I thought this must be heaven. Then I noticed all the other dogs. Big ones, little ones, hairy ones, noisy ones, and some with restless leg syndrome, I think. It was clearly a party atmosphere. When it was our turn to go in the ring, Mom kept saying, ready before we did things. That confused me a little. She never said that at home. And although I watched her really well, an irresistible smell wafted up from the grass, and of course I stopped to check it out. But Mom kept going so I had to give up that idea. Some other things were different, too. When I sat and waited while Mom walked away from me, she went just a bit too far and I missed her, so I got up and followed her. AND to make it all the more confusing, I had not gotten one single treat yet. The stand-stay was next. I stood. I stayed. A nice lady petted me, and then when Mom came back to me, I wagged and went to greet her. After that we went to the shade to sit down for a while. Mom was kind of quiet and both of us were hot. When we went back in the ring, we were NOT alone. Mom had me sit next to her and then she walked away again. I stayed really well for an eternity, and then I noticed these really funky looking dogs sitting nearby. On one side was a big black dog with short hair. On my other side there was a bigger dog with long hair, drooling and panting. We were all hot. It was then that I decided that Shakespeare had it right The game s afoot, thou still let s slip. I pranced toward the entrance to the ring alone, but in every way the Royal Spaniel. Mom joined me really quickly after thanking the nice lady. And that is my story. I hear there will be a second chapter AFTER we find a class on the mainland. I wonder if I will see that drooling girl again Have a wonderful summer, dear ones! Keep cool and play the games YOU want to play! As ever, Onstage William Shakespeare 2

3 Rescue Updates More rescue success!!! I m very happy to report that most of the dogs mentioned in the last update have found homes!!!!!scarlett and Rosie went to their new home with club member Steven Souza and Gene Langley in May! Maggie in San Diego has also found her forever family. Bailey went to his new home this last weekend. And, Chubby in San Diego has been renamed Chester by his new forever Mom. Thanks to all the fosters who have helped these guys out!!!!! Charles Charley Charlie We ve had a run on Charlies with rescue--no, not English Toy Spaniels--just Cavaliers named Charlie (or some variation)--a trio of tri colors. (Coincidentally, the tri-colored English Toy Spaniels are called Prince Charlies.) Charley, a younger male was turned over to rescue in May in Modesto. The foster mom made a quick stop at Petco on her way home from picking him up. Charley charmed several customers, and by the end of the afternoon, we had three applications for him. He went to his new family at the end of the evaluation period. The other two guys haven t been quite as lucky. Charlie was originally turned into rescue in San Diego and was fostered in the LA area. After no luck in finding him a home, the Arizona district offered to take him. He loved his foster home, but after almost a year, he still had no luck finding that permanent place. Unfortunately, his foster mom had to give him up, and he came back to California--Santa Clara this time. He s a pretty healthy 10-year-old whose luck has just changed! He went to his new home today!!!!!! Charles is, as his foster mom says, a wonderful and pretty incredible guy. He s twelve years old, but doesn t act a day over eight! He gets along well with kids, other dogs, cats, and birds; and, he uses the doggy door. Look for more details at LouAnn AND, COMING SOON: LouAnn (10 years old) and Daisy (9 years old) still need dentals and a little other work, but they are both very sweet older ladies. LouAnn is shyer and a bit of a drama queen, but she s a fun little girl to have around. Daisy is the perfect little companion--very sweet and very eager to please. Many thanks to Judge Michael Forte of Dublin, Ireland, for this exciting win. Also, thank you to Catrina Minnick for her beautiful presentation of Denny. Thanks to her team for his wonderful care. 7 Very Special Passages... One Component of Our Mission AKC Ch. Y Cymry Brighton Of Loch Lomond November 5, July 17, 2013 Brighton, your paw prints will linger in our hearts forever. You were a kind and valiant boy who made our lives complete. May you find many balls in heaven to play with every day! 7

8 Tidbits... One Component of Our Mission Lament of a Lady Who's Gone to the Dogs" (Anonymous) There was a time, there really was, when I was sweet and tender; When Show Dog meant a Disney Star and bitch was not a gender. I went to bed at half past ten, I went to church on Sunday; On Saturday I baked the beans and did the wash on Monday. But then I got a certain pup and another friend said "SHOW!", And so I did and so I do, OH! What I didn't know. I used to dress with flair and style, that was the life, don't knock it. But now each dress from bed to ball must have a good bait pocket. I used to have a certain air, I wallowed in perfume, I used to smell of Nuit D'Amour, now I smell like Mr. Groom. My furniture was haute décor, my pets a tank of guppies. Now I've furniture unstuffed and well-adjusted puppies. Once I spoke in pristine prose, in dulcet tones and frail, But now I'm using language that would turn a sailor pale! I was taught to be well groomed no matter where I went. Now all the grooming that I do is in the handler's tent. I used to long for furs and jewels and a figure classed as super, Now the thing I yearn for most is a nice new pooper scooper. I adored a man who murmured verse, through intimate little dinners, But now the words I thrill to hear, are just three-"best of Winners". I rise at dawn and pack the car, the road ahead's a long one. The one I routed on the map invariably's the wrong one. I really love this doggy life, I wouldn't care to change it. But when I get that Best in Show, I plan to rearrange it. When my time on earth is done, I'll go without much nudging. Just give me three weeks closing date, and let me know who's judging! Through a Dog's Ear: Using Sound to Improve the Health & Behavior of Your Canine Companion by Joshua Leeds & Susan Wagner (submitted by Carol Karcher)! This book and CD combo, and further volumes is a real find. Do we find ourselves periodically needing to sooth our somnambulant hounds? I crate my dogs when I m not there for short periods of time. I really don t want them to figure out how to jump on the table or open the cabinets and eat all the dry rice while I m not present to suggest to them that it s really not in their best interests for me to pour hydrogen peroxide down them to see just what it was that they ve been up to. I m slightly less interested in them learning opera when I turn on classical music for them. This book was a real boon. It s well written, and, as you can imagine, is a testament to long consideration and study of the canine being. I even loved the CD. And the author makes sure that while it calms your companion, it doesn t put you to sleep on the road. I m a particular fan of Vivaldi, and the music of this CD even ensures that I ll be glad to hear it. 8

9 President s Message, con t.! Del Valle is accepting the catalog ads; they will print one catalog for 3 days of shows so your ad will have much more exposure. We also are not able to hold juniors we will do a supported entry for Del Valle. Also, the dog that wins Best of Breed for our show can go to the Group competition for the all breed show. But otherwise, neither attendees nor exhibitors should notice any differences.! We are pleased to announce that we have a breeder judge from the UK this year Veronica Hull of Telvara Cavaliers as our conformation judge. Sandra Harrison from Southern California will judge our Sweepstakes and Veteran Sweepstakes. We are also working on some nice prizes for our winners. The Trophy and Class Sponsorship form will be available on the website very shortly. (We are also working on adding PayPal to the site so more transactions can be handled on line!) We will list our sponsors in the catalog, and we will also have a poster at the show. We will be able to include pictures of the dog (or person) you wish to honor or memorialize on the poster so I d love to see everyone in the club participate. (Donors will also be recognized on our website!)! Beverly Meyer has agreed to be our raffle and auction coordinator, and she is working on some exciting ideas. She can always use help in arranging the items before the show and the day of the show. We are also gladly taking donations for the Raffle and Silent Auction held at the show as well as the Silent and Live Auctions held at the banquet. Donations are not limited to stuff Cavalier or otherwise!!!! Donations of services are welcome as well: Are you a great tennis player could you donate a couple of lessons or some practice time? How about dog sitting or doggy day care in a club member s home or maybe a grooming session or two? (Limitations are allowed.) This is also a great way to get to know our members and find out their special skills! If you are interested in donating or helping, please Beverly at plakagal@aol.com.! This year our banquet will be at The Cattlemens in Livermore! We have a great menu planned and the price is right--$35.00 per person!!!!! Plan on attending to mingle with exhibitors and club members and bring your check book so you ll be ready to take home those irresistible auction items!!!!susan Gonyo and Elisa Rosenberg are in charge of the banquet, so if you are interested in helping with decorating or other banquet duties please contact Susan at susangonyo@hotmail.com.! Help is still needed in many areas. Jo Ann Weise is in charge of the Welcome Reception and can use help setting up. We also need several people to hand out Welcome Bags and registration packets. This brings up the fact that we need help with Welcome Bags from start to finish acquiring bags and goodies to fill them with as well as assembling them. Kathy Tegg is our Hospitality Chair. She is tops at this, and you ll be learning from the best if you help her out. Volunteers are also needed to set up the show site and decorate as well as take everything down right after the show. Help is always needed at the show to sell catalogs, raffle tickets and banquet tickets. If you can help in any area, please contact me at molly4dunree@comcast.net.! I think we have a very exciting show planned for this year. If you know anyone who is thinking about getting a Cavalier, please encourage them to attend. (If you know someone looking for another breed, bring them along and they can tour the all breed show!) All Cavalier lovers are welcome at the show and the banquet. A strong attendance from our club members will help to make this the best show ever!!!! So, put October 19 th on your calendar now!! (Information on all events as well as trophy and class sponsorships and advertising will be on the website shortly.) Molly Hughes, President 9

If the need arises that we limit these submissions, we will contact you to prioritize which announcements are most important to you. 11 One Component of Our Mission AKC Code of Sportsmanship PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented. Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs. Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace. Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior. The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors. The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism. The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs. The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge. The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs. Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors. Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport. Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them. Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding stock. Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them. Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog. Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the sport. 11
