The first quarter of the year is always busy for the club, and this year was Molly Hughes President no exception. Our January meeting celebrated the accomplishments of Club Members and their Jo Anne Mittelman Vice President Cavaliers during Jo Anne Mittelman and Allyson Gonyo did an outstanding job of collecting Jeanne Kestner Treasurer the information and making lovely certificates. Once again, Jo Ann Weise handled the entries for Golden Susan Gonyo Recording Secretary Gate and decorated the bench for this show. Unfortunately, the show is not as large as it used to Allyson Gonyo Corresponding Secretary be, but it is still a terrific educational event for anyone thinking about owning a pure bred dog. Thank you to everyone who participated! We held our annual health clinic in early March. Thank you to Jo Ann Weise and Jo Anne Mittelman for organizing this successful event. Traditionally we have provided testing for both hearts and eyes. The last few years we have barely met our minimum number of eye exams (required by the ophthalmologist), so the Board decided to only include heart exams in next year s clinic. We will be notifying club members of eye clinics already scheduled as well as any special offers by doctors in the area. 2 A Word from Willie... Come away, servant, I am ready. Approach, my Ariel, Come! Prospero (The Tempest) or Come! Willie, Come! Come here! My Mom (my house) Dear Royal Spaniels, We all hear the word come perhaps several times a day. If you have a clever human family, you only hear come when there is something good that comes your way. At my house, come calls me to breakfast, to dinner, to a ride in the car, to go for a walk, to a romp on the beach, to watch TV up on the couch with the family, or to get in my house for a nice nap if the family has to leave for awhile. Did you notice that I get either food or an adventure with my people for each of those come times? When I am called to go in my house I ALWAYS get a treat to eat. And a soft blanket to sleep on. And soft music playing. Because I get treats, meals, or adventure, I approach fast when I hear come. It s all good! Once, though, I heard my mom say come to my grandma Kate and then Mom gave her a bath. She doesn t like baths very much, so later that day when Mom said Kate, Come! she didn t. She was not in the mood for a bath just then, so she ran the other way and hid. Later she learned that it WASN T bath time. Oops! She missed a treat a car ride. I think Mom learned something that day not to use come for stuff we don t like. It makes us not want to come. She doesn t use come to get us to the bath anymore. Now she surprises us and carries us to the bath. It works for her. And I can trust that come is all good again. Sweet Cavaliers, please show this letter to your people so they learn to only use come for things WE like. And then YOU can zoom to them when you hear that magic word come! Until next time - Onstage William Shakespeare aka Willie PS. Willie s Mom here. If your Cavaliers always come because it is a positive thing, they will come when you need to use it to save them from danger! 2
Rescue Update 2013 got off to a good start for rescue! Pippi, Rio, Hannah, and Annie all went to forever homes. However, their foster homes didn t stay empty for long!!!!! Scarlett and Rosie are two lovely ladies looking for a home where they can stay together. Seven and five years-old--they are in great health. You can find out more information about them at They are being fostered in Santa Clara. Maggie, a young girl being fostered in San Diego, is also on the website. Two more dogs are currently being evaluated in foster care. Bailey and Louann had some health issues; we will post updates when we have a better idea of what is going on with their health. These five dogs were owner-surrenders--one of the main ways that Cavaliers come into rescue. The shelters have also been too full of Cavaliers recently. We were able to spring Charlie, a 12-year old guy, and Chubby,a 3-year old boy. Their pictures and information will be available shortly. Chubby was spotted by a Lab Rescue representative, and a member of their group was able to foster him! This was a huge help as we just don t have enough foster homes!!!! If you are able to help in any way, please fill out a volunteer application at Rosie Scarlett! Pippi s Christmas wish came true! She found her forever home in January 2013, and she couldn t be happier. She is enjoying daily walks and occasional trips to the beach! Pippi didn t realize she was also getting a super-sized aunt and uncle, but she fits right in with the two Welsh Springers. (I guess a love of Spaniels runs in her new family!) Thank you so much to Sarah for giving this older sweetheart a wonderful new life!!!! Pippi is a great example of how much an older rescue can enliven your world! 3
Litter bits and Championship Points At 14 months of age, Royalmark Crystal Blue Persuasion At WynDancer, owned and handled by Dr. Sue Barrett, won Best Puppy in Sweeps at the Columbia River Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Specialty December 7 and 8, 2012, under noted Judge Patty Kanan. He also won Winner's Dog, a 4 pt major and attained his AKC Championship under noted Judge Cindy Huggins. Plumridge Cavaliers is very excited to announce their latest production... Three lovely little girls came into the world very early on Tuesday, March 26th! The proud parents are Penn Pal s Abbey Road to Plumridge (Abby) and the beautiful Ch. Turretbank To Sir With Love (Sidney), who is owned and loved by Cottfordcourt Cavaliers in Ontario, California. This is Abby s second litter and she continues to be a stellar mama to her new children! Special thanks go to Julie and Jeff Barto for their invaluable assistance in the whelping of these little girls! Julie loves the whelpings as much as Jo Ann doesn t!! 4
Litter bits and Championship Points, con t. At Westminster this year, Denny enjoyed being featured on CNN News in a news piece by reporter Jeannie Moos. It was fun seeing him on TV!! BISS Multi Group Winning GCH Crizwood's Undeniable (Denny) finished his show career with a flourish, winning a Group 4 placement and attaining the Grand Champion Gold level at the Toy Dog Breeders Association of S.C. in Palm Springs. He was the tenth Cavalier to reach the gold level. Thank you, Judge Lee Whittier and, as always, Amy Rutherford and her crew. Denny has had a wonderful career and I m so proud of him! I m also very thankful for all the wonderful support we ve received over the years! Jo Anne and Kumar have a new Champion! Harrington Loch Lomond Here for a Good Time aka "Chase" gained his title at Golden Gate Kennel Club under Mrs. Charlotte Patterson with a major win. Chase is owned by Jo Anne and Kumar and bred by Allyson and Susan Gonyo. He is the second puppy from his litter to attain his CH title! Now it s Brogan s turn... 5 We were delighted to be able to be a part of the Oregon Trail Club 1st AKC Regional Specialty Show! The OTCC did a fantastic job of putting on a Specialty. We were ever so thrilled that DJ was awarded Best in Specialty Show, and I was so pleased that Kumar was there to see it!
Litter bits and Championship Points, con t. Mary McHenry is extremely excited that her boy, "Mackie", is enjoying his vacation to his breeder Kim Johnson's home in Hawaii. He has been in 5 days of shows there and has taken a Group 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th!! He also completed his Grand Championship title and is now GCH Allegria Made You Look. He currently the top pointed Cavalier in Hawaii as well as #17 in the country in All Breed standings (through Feb). When he's not showing he's been working hard on the coffee farm! President s Message, con t. The Tri-Valley SPCA has been a wonderful location for our meetings the past few years. This year, they were already booked on ALL of our meeting dates, so we have been looking for other dog-friendly venues. Our April meeting will be held at Read Booksellers in Danville and yes well-behaved Cavaliers are welcome! Our last two meetings have been at Dogtopia, and Elisa Rosenberg has offered her home for the July meeting. We are still finalizing topics and locations for the end of the year but I know Jo Anne Mittelman will make it all work out! If you know of any centrally located meeting places please let her know. Fun Day is scheduled for Sunday, June 23 rd at Larkey Park in Walnut Creek. Last year s format was very popular, so we will do it again this year! The club will provide the main dish hot dogs and hamburgers and we will have a potluck for the rest! There will be more information on the flyer that will come out in the next month or so. As always, we can use help with the raffle setting up as well as items for it. Please start thinking about items to donate!!!! Our 12 th Annual Specialty will be held in conjunction with the Del Valle dog show this year instead of being an independent specialty. We are a little later getting started this year because of this change, but we almost have the details worked out. Susan Gonyo and Elisa Rosenberg are our banquet chairs. We still need someone to be in charge of the Live and Silent Auctions and the raffle, so please let me know if you are interested in helping. But, those aren t the only opportunities to be involved! I will be sending out an shortly with more information and ways to help out. AKC requires that we meet eligibility requirements to be able to hold our Specialty. Holding a Canine Good Citizen Test is one major event that we often hold at Fun Day. Having an active Public Education Program is another way to meet the requirements. Examples of this are having active Canine Ambassador Programs or supporting an AKC Veterinary Outreach activity. Some of the other activities are having a New Exhibitor Mentoring Program or holding Dog Show Tours. September is Responsible Dog Ownership month, and holding an RDO event is also encouraged. If you are interested in learning about any of these events or helping us develop a program, please contact me. Jo Ann Weise has done an excellent job as editor of The Wag; however, she wouldn t mind letting someone else have a turn at the position! If you are interested in becoming the new editor--or even in assisting to learn the ropes, please let me know. (The Wag has been compiled in both Microsoft Publisher and Apple Pages.) I d also like to extend a belated welcome to our newest member Kathy Rankin. Kathy was approved for membership in November. I hope to see you all at our next meeting in Danville!--Molly 6

Health News Health News From Jan Rowley... One issue we see too often in Ophthalmology is a precious new puppy losing an eye because of the family cat. I would like to urge all breeders to ask prospective owners if there are cats in the family, and, if so, to make it imperative that the cats have their nails trimmed as short as possible before the puppy is taken home and kept in that condition. It happened again today, a couple with their brand new Russian Black Terrier puppy drove him down from Humboldt county early this morning, and his eye is being removed as I type this. A cat claw right through the cornea. Very sad, and very preventable! WARNING--FOXTAIL SEASON IS HERE!!! Just a quick reminder that foxtail growing season is here (and continues through the summer as the weeds dry out); Cavaliers with their short little muzzles, long ears, and slippered feet are at extra risk of picking up one of these nasty seeds. The head of the plant has sharp barbs that once dry are meant to stick to fur and burrow in. When your dog displays any unusual sneezing or head shaking or biting at paws--please take a very close look. If you see signs of a foxtail, go to a vet. Foxtails cannot be degraded or decomposed by the body, and they have barbs that allow the awn to only move forward in the body. Once a foxtail has penetrated the skin, you cannot just pull it back out. Just mowing down the foxtail weed when it is green does not eliminate the problem unless you pick up ALL the foxtails. When an awn dries, it will still be capable of doing damage. Either pulling the whole weed or cutting the whole stalk while the plant is green is the best way to prevent the foxtails from getting to the dangerous stage. Do not try to dispose of the awns in a home compost situation; the compost usually does not get hot enough to destroy them. However, they generally will decompose in a large landfill. I have even been known to carry scissors with me when I walk my dogs and to cut any stalks of the grass that are on the edge of the sidewalk. Then, the green foxtails go into a bag and into our garbage. I have also asked some of my neighbors if I can remove them from their yards--and this has wiped out a few problem areas. Trimming your dog s ears, slippers, and feathers can help minimize the chance that they will pick one up. Check your dogs out after walks--don t forget to check on the underside and in the armpits. Putting a snood on your dog while you walk can protect the ears. (Someone is actually selling them online as a Foxtail Dog Protector! LOL) If you work your dog outside for obedience or agility, you might consider the mask sold at 8

Editor s note Please always remember that this is your publication! If you come across any information or articles that you feel the rest of the club membership would enjoy or benefit from, please forward them on to me. And remember, we must have written authorization from the author to reprint any or all of their articles. Book reviews are always fun and always welcome! Also, if you want to send in a picture or article, please send it in a jpeg format and not a PDF file. Also, please remember that the targeted publication schedule for the Cavalier Wag will be at the end of each quarter (March, June, September and December) and all articles will be due by the 15th of those months. As many of our members are having extraordinary success in the ring, we are finding that on occasion we may be limited (due to file size constraints) as to how many pictures and captions we can squeeze into each edition of the Cavalier Wag. Please note that we reserve the right to publish up to two announcements per member. If the need arises that we limit these submissions, we will contact you to prioritize which announcements are most important to you. In an effort to publish the information you provide in the most accurate manner, please remember to include the picture and corresponding verbiage you wish to publish into the same . If at all possible, do not send them in separate s.
