New Wheels to Promote Our Animals Dogs and cats will ride in style as they move closer to new forever homes. Recently, the Schumacher Family of Dealerships and Subaru of America presented the League with a brand new Subaru Outback. Subaru of America, Inc. and our dealer partner Schumacher Subaru are very pleased to announce our new partnership with the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, said John Ross of Subaru of America. At Subaru, not only do our owners love their cars; they love their pets too! We wish Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League the very best in their continuing efforts to help animals in need. The Outback will be used to further promote The League and its important mission by transporting animals to adoption and special events, vaccine & micro-chip clinics and much, much more. The vehicle is also a mobile billboard for the League as fully wrapped with images of our canine friends from the Dog Tested Dog Approved campaign. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League has gained so much from our collaboration with the Schumacher Family and is thrilled and grateful that Schumacher Subaru has offered to donate this co-branded Subaru Outback to help support our life saving programs, said Rich Anderson, Executive Director & CEO of the League. (from L to R): John Ross, RAY Gould, Chuck Schumacher, Rich Anderson, and Frank Murano. 3

New Life for Our Domes Since 1984, our domes have been part of our campus. While the opening of the Grace Pavilion moved our adoption center and clinic out of those buildings, the domes are still an important part of our operations. All animals arriving at our shelter are housed and treated in the curved structures. Having a separate structure for animal intake also helps prevent an illness from spreading to our adoptable animals. Please join us in saluting two companies that are helping us extend the life of our domes. Roof Surveys Inc. and Knopf and Associates both have supplied pro bono work that we consider to be priceless. Thousands of animals in need of a second chance have traveled through the domes on their way to new forever homes. We re so grateful to the business community for allowing this tradition to continue. The Gift of Caring An extraordinary gift will allow us to reach new heights in our efforts to control cat overpopulation in our community. The Darbster Foundation recently made a $67,500 Leadership Circle pledge to our feral cat Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. TNR sees feral cats humanely trapped, spay/neutered, vaccinated for rabies, microchipped and then returned to their colony to live out their lives. The program involves a caretaker who provides food, adequate shelter and monitoring of the cats health. TNR has been shown to be the least costly and most efficient and humane way of stabilizing feral cat populations. Since it began in September of 2010, TNR has sterilized 6,391 feral cats. The Darbster Foundation is funded by 100% of the profits from the Darbster restaurant in West Palm Beach. Owned by animal lovers, Ellen Quinlan and Alan Gould, the vegetarian and vegan bistro has helped countless animals in our community. Please join us in thanking the Darbster Foundation for its kindness and generosity. Volunteers Go High Tech 4 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League A cheer went through the Grace Pavilion as our new Volunteer Manager, Tara Pregnolato, unveiled a new way for us to keep track of our volunteers. In the past, our volunteers would log their hours by writing them down in a book. Later, that information would need to be manually entered into a spreadsheet. Pregnolato (pictured with volunteer, Pam Ryan) discovered that an existing software program could accomplish that time-consuming task with the addition of a touchscreen monitor. Now every volunteer has their own ID number, which they use to track their Peggy Time. Each day we get more proficient at logging in and out and because they re using the screen, I can tell who is here and where they are on campus, should I need to ask for help in another area, Pregnolato said. The new system also makes it much easier for our volunteers who help us off-site as foster parents, and thrift store and event volunteers, to track their hours.

Join us on March 8, 2014 Register at WalkWithPeggy.org THE BARRY CROWN WALK for the ANIMALS WANT TO BUILD COMPANY MORALE, MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY AND GET NEW BUSINESS? As a sponsor, you ll promote your business and know that you re helping homeless animals in Palm Beach County. You ll enjoy a custom tailored package that will supercharge your marketing and give your customers a warm and fuzzy feeling. Did we mention that animal lovers have been shown to have high levels of disposable income? Warning: These opportunities fill up fast! Why wait? Call or marketing@hspb.org. Your Animals Agree! 5! My tail wagged the entire morning. - Pepper I knew there was a Walk but I didn t know I could also get washed by nice groomers. Look at me now vavoom! - Lilly The water station was perfectly placed on the course. - Trixie It was great to know that my family could have a day of fun and know that we were helping other animals. - Nelson What? My family hasn t already registered for the 2014 Walk? We need to have a chat! - Rover In Memory You may remember Adrianne, the English Bulldog who stole the show at the 2013 Walk for the Animals. We cheered as she won the award for the Owner/Pet Look-A-Like Contest with her proud papa, Barry Wilette. This was a special moment for us, as Adrianne had been adopted by Wilette from our shelter. It was great to see her having so much fun at the Walk. Sadly, Adrienne s health recently took a turn for the worst and she has since journeyed over the Rainbow Bridge. We decided to honor this special dog by creating the first team for the 2014 Walk for the Animals in her honor. Please show your support by either joining Team Adrianne or creating your own Walk team at WalkWithPeggy.org. Let the memory of this beautiful dog continue to help animals in need of a second chance. 5

= Good Behavior Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League has expanded its Behavior and Training Department as part of our ongoing commitment to our animals. As the caretakers of more than 3,200 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, we are focused on making sure that every animal has the best chance of finding a new forever home. We know that the better trained our animals are, the faster they are likely to find and stay with a new family. Better Much of the work involves being a detective as we may know next to nothing about an animal that arrives at our shelter. Animals are observed and their personalities are profiled through the ASPCA s Meet Your Match standardized test. Did you know that we evaluate cats based on nine different personality types? A record is made of each animal s behavior. A training program is created to overcome any bad behavior. This is a living document that can change with the animal. The adoption process does not get underway until new, positive behaviors are learned. We want to learn how an animal reacts when a hand (even a fake one) approaches the food bowl. We re checking for resource guarding behavior. Many animals come to us suffering from fear or shyness. Huck Nawaz, our Behavior Manager, convinces a shy dog to approach him. Training is an ongoing learning process as members of our Behavior Team train our Kennel Technicians and volunteers. Here, we want to find out if a stray animal is comfortable being hand fed. Play groups provide excellent stimulation for our animals. We also learn whether an animal plays well with others, or should be an only child in a home. We also need to find out how a dog or a cat reacts to touch. This tells us how the animal feels about being handled. 6 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

Adoptions No two animals are alike and living in a shelter can affect animals. After 45 days, any dogs that are still with us are given a special reassessment to make sure there are no new behavior issues. Tips from the Trainer: Sit & Down It s easy to teach your dog some basic commands: SIT: Start with some really good treats like hot dogs, string cheese, or leftover roasted chicken. Think about what your dog finds highly valuable. Place the treat close to your dog s nose and slowly raise it over her head. You will see a teeter tooter effect, where the nose goes up and the butt goes down. When your dog has sat down, say yes to mark the behavior and give her a treat. Repeat this several times. When your dog starts to anticipate what is happening, you can add the command, SIT. You now have a dog that knows how to sit! DOWN: We start with your dog in a SIT command. Place the treat close to your dog s nose and slowly bring the treat down to the floor between your dog s front feet. The dog will fold into a DOWN. Say yes and give her the treat. Be patient! We recommend you work on this command on tile or wood flooring as it is easier for the dog to slide into a DOWN while trying to get the treat. Repeat this several times. When your dog starts to anticipate what is happening, you can add the command DOWN. You now have a dog that knows how to lie down! Kristi Jackson is the Senior/Lead Trainer at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. Our new partnership with Tailwaggers Learning Center gives you another way to strengthen the bond between you and your dogs. Tailwaggers is a not-for-profit membership club that features experienced and knowledgeable dog lovers serving as instructors. You ll learn fun and modern motivation techniques that will transform your relationship with your animals. To find out more, visit Tailwaggers.org or call WAGS (9247). Your Dog Will Love Saturdays If you ve adopted a dog and need help with the transition, come to one of our free drop-in classes. You ll learn basic commands for you and your new canine partner. All classes are held at the League, outside in the training field or inside during bad weather. Classes start promptly every Saturday at 9 a.m. Please arrive by 8:30am. Topics Covered in the Classes: Teaching your dog to sit, lay down, stay, and come Learning to walk your dog in a controlled manner Using techniques to prevent unwanted behavior, like jumping Improved communication and understanding League staff and volunteers provide the training. Any donations collected support our adoptable animals. 7

Leadership Circle Consider supporting Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League at the highest level through our Leadership Circle. The group is made up of donors who make a five-year commitment to the League at a minimum of $1,000 per year. The ongoing support will allow us to continue to forge ahead with our ambitious plans to reach the day when there are no more homeless pets in our county. To find out how your Leadership Circle pledge can help the animals today and tomorrow, contact Ken Okel at k.okel@ hspb.org or A long weekend in October could mean a great deal to animals in need of loving homes. Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is proud to be a part of the 2013 Mega Match-A-Thon. The event is part of a nationwide effort that s coordinated by The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the ASPCA, we are planning a huge, threeday adoption celebration that has a goal of finding new homes for 200 animals. To help us reach this level, we re bringing in many other rescue groups from across our area to our campus. You ll also be able to visit with pet service vendors and enjoy other fun activities. This special event will start on Friday, October 18th from 11 a.m. 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. 4 p.m. Join us as we try to help a record number of wonderful cats and dogs find new homes. 8 Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League

Inaugural Event Unleashes Help for Homeless Animals Carol Garvy & Cathy Flagg An evening of casual chic helped raise more than $125,000 for animals in need of a second chance. In April, the inaugural Off the Leash event provided some of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League s closest friends the chance to leave their ties and jackets at home in exchange for an unleashed celebration of dogs and cats. Attendees arriving at Palm Beach s Club Colette were greeted by some of our most adorable and adoptable dogs. The proceeds from Off the Leash will help shelter care and prepare homeless animals for adoption. laurie Raber Gottlieb & Joanie Van der GRIFT Event Co-chairs were Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Board Members Nellie Benoit, Carol Garvy, Laurie Raber Gottlieb, and Joanie Van der Grift. DAVID Ober & Nellie Benoit LESLY Smith, Carol McCracken & Pauline Pitt Jane Grace & Vicky Hunt Fur On the Fairway Would you like to take your swings at the course Florida Golf Magazine says is the best in the state? 11 Happy Tails We love hearing your updates about your new family members. Here are just three of the Happy Tails we ve recently received: Ella We have fallen head over heels in love with Ella! She is amazing!! She is so smart, playful, loving, and she loves her Daddy!! She is a lot like a toddler and gets into everything, but we LOVE HER SOOO MUCH! She likes to talk too!! She loves feet, especially socks. She carries them in her mouth around the house like a security blanket, and drops them by her food bowl. Ella amazes us every day with her personality!! She responds so well to commands from my fiancé. Thank you so very much for allowing us to adopt this beautiful little girl!! We absolutely love her so much! Krystle Krystle is wonderful! It s like she has been with us all her life! She is great with little Max and my youngest daughter is doing a great job brushing and walking her every day! She even sleeps with her on my daughter s bed! Krystle is eating and sleeping well. We stayed home on July 4th because we didn t know how she would react to the fireworks - but she was actually better than Max! We did not change her name because we all loved that name and she responds well so it worked for us. I think that God just sent us there that day because He wanted us to have Krystle! She is a wonderful addition to our family! Thank you so much! Ginger Thank you for checking on Ginger. She has just recently received all her shots. Ginger is cute as a bug in the rug and is like the energizer bunny. Both the Cairn Terrier and her get along terrific together and are a great match. She is Queen of the House and has the full house to rummage in (both down and upstairs). She also loves children - my nephews and her get along wonderfully. She is very tame and loving. Doggone cute, isn t she?? Thank you for picking her out of the crowd for me. Create your Own Happy tails Memory Visit hspb.org and take a look at adoptable animals waiting to become a part of your family.
