1 Hot Dog Newsletter MARCH 2013 SUMMER EDITION PRESIDENT S REPORT Hello everyone and welcome to the NST & ODC Hotdog. This is the first Hotdog for 2013, so I had better make it a good one. Firstly I would like to thank outgoing committee members Graeme Fairley, Frances Coull, Sue Boxer, Irene Levitzke, Stephen Lemish and Candice Van Wyk for their dedication and hard work throughout the previous year. The club would not be where it is today without the effort and commitment of members like these. I would also like to thank the members of our 2012 committee who have decided to fill positions for another year and assist this great club of ours. Paul Dyer, Vel Donnati, Daniela Fischer Carmen Wong and last but certainly not least Christine Murray thankyou guys! We have six new people who I would like to introduce onto the 2013 Committee, Liz Balding, Emily Quek, Maria and Rocco Caratozzolo, Harry Glasgow and re- introducing after a break from committee duty Lesley Ross. Please join me in welcoming them. I m sure their contributions will be greatly appreciated. Now as they say down to business. We had our Christmas break up event in December 2012 and it went off with a bang. The turnout of members who enjoyed the games and festivities was brilliant. The raffle was a HUGE success and I must say a special thankyou to those who donated gifts and prizes. This was the biggest raffle the club has ever had. It s that time of the year again when the mercury tends to push the limits. With the hot weather bearing down upon us, I urge you to take extra care of you furry four legged friends. Remember to keep plenty of drinking water available for them as they can get dehydrated very quickly. DO NOT leave them locked in the car while you visit friends or go shopping - even just to grab a paper as temperatures in cars (windows partially down or not) can soar rapidly. It may be blunt to say but - - DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS! To assist in keeping your dog cool, a good method is to wet their stomach and inner hindquarters with tepid water not too cold. When walking dogs in hot weather, the bitumen and concrete can reach very high temperatures early so be aware of their paws. Before considering going for a walk, place the back of your hand on the bitumen if you are unable to hold your hand there comfortably then leave the walk till the evening when it s cooler. If your dog has a pink nose or ears, it s an idea to put a pet safe sunscreen (zinc free) on, as dogs can get sunburnt and risk cancer too. Remember an once of prevention is better than a pound of cure. We hosted our first Dogswest Obedience and Rally- O trial for the year in February, which was well received by all who competed. Once again our sponsors Nutro demonstrated their generosity and supplied prizes for the first place winners in each category. Without sponsorship, our trials would be just another trial. 2 2 Hot Dog March 2013 Page 2 of 5 From The Editor Topic of the month: Dog Trials Welcome to our quarterly e- newsletter for March is already here. Welcome to all new and existing members. The Club held our first Dogs West Obedience and Rally O Trial for 2013 on 5th Feb, which went very well (even though it was a warm day). Thank you to all the members who assisted in the trial, from set up, behind the scene organising the event, stewarding, writing all those qualification cards, catering, organising prizes and judging the events. It is important that we hold these Dogswest trials as part of the CAWA Association and we are the only club to hold these events north of the river (in the metropolitan area). If you have not seen an Obedience, Rally O or Agility Trial, come down to the grounds and watch the trials. It is amazing what the dogs can achieve. There are a number of dog activities available in Perth, including obedience, dancing with dogs, agility, endurance, herding, retrieving, tracking and showing. Our club offers training for Obedience, Rally O, Dancing with Dogs and Agility. To participate in a trial you will need to join the relevant training and practice. The club offers members to participate in member s obedience competitions a couple of times throughout the year. This is an opportunity to participate (practice) and have an insight of what a dog trial entails. For junior classes, you will be asked to complete exercises of your class level individually in a ring and then get promoted to the next class. It is informal and the judges (aka instructors) will talk through the exercise beforehand and you and your dog performs around the ring. For the 2A and 2B classes, there is a list of exercises that the dog needs to complete before being promoted. Once your dog is in Level 3, you can participate in formal trials such as Dogswest Trials. So what is a Dogswest Trial? Dogswest or CAWA (Canine Association of WA) is the representative association for dogs in WA. Many dog clubs such as ours are affiliated with Dogswest, which provides the club an opportunity to host formal Dog Trials to compete and earn titles for our dogs! There is a lot of detailed information on the Dogswest website ( In a Dogs West dog trial, there is preparation that requires completion prior to entering your dog in the trial. These are few of my hints: 1. You must be a member of the Dogs West before participating in a Dogs West trial and your dog must be registered with Dogs West. If you bought your dog with papers it will probably already be registered, otherwise you will need to register as an Associate Their website has a membership form and you will need to contact the office for the appropriate fees for your dog. The office staff are very happy to assist. 2. Make sure you apply at least six weeks before you want to enter. 3. Once you receive your Dogs West (CAWA) membership number and your dog s registration number you are ready for trialling. You must then complete the Dogs West trial entry forms for each trial. Entry forms can be downloaded from the Dogs West website. Note that there are different forms for Agility, Obedience and Rally- O and Dances With Dogs. It is important that you complete the correct form for the right level and club for the right day. I have pre- printed my trial entries with my dog s name, membership number and made multiple copies so that there is less paperwork to do. 4. For all Agility trials, Open level and above in Obedience and Advanced level and above in Rally- O, your dog s height will be required to be formally measured so that the height they are required to jump can be calculated. This measurement is required in the trial entry forms. To do so, you will need to contact the Coordinator of the Measuring Committee who will provide details of the paperwork required for completion and arrange a suitable day. The measurement of the dog will be carried out at one of the Dogs West trials or at certain club training, by arrangement only. 5. Dog clubs hosting a specific trial advertise in the Dogs West magazine (the Canine News which you will receive as a member of Dogs West) or on their website. Pick your day and complete the trial form and send in the entry money accordingly to the host club. Now the paperwork is complete. Practice, practice, and enjoy the day (and pack a big bag!). Go and watch a few trials so that you know what to expect and speak to any seasoned competitors. Eventually your dog will have titles like this: T.CH. Alverpoint Mistress Luka CDX, RE, TSDX, ADM, JDX, JDO, SDX, GD, SPD, DWDF.S, HTM.N. (Translation: Tracking Champion Alverpoint Mistress Luka Companion Dog Excellent, Rally Excellent, Track & Search Dog Excellent, Agility Dog Master, Jumping Dog Excellent, Jumping Dog Open, Snooker Dog Excellent, Gamblers Dog, Strategic Pairs Dog, Dancing with Dogs Freestyle Starter, Heelwork to Music Novice. ) Whew!!!
